i went to see the texas chainsaw massacre last night. pretty goary stuff. was scary, but found me and my friend blubbering at one point, some gripping bits.
leather face was no where near as scary as the old one, theyve totally bulked him up, like he's some incredible hulk or something.

Last two films i saw were Alien: The Director's Cut which was absolutely fantastic, loved seeing it on the big screen, and Kill Bill which was great fun. No plot, no real substance, but style, style, amazing violence, action and superb technique. Thoroughly enjoyed it. The anime bit was incredible and the final half hour or so was so good...

I watched a series of short silent films by D.W. Griffiths, and there was a real piano player doing the music for them.
It was neat. I felt like growing a handlebar mustache.

I loved Kill Bill. Cant wait for the next one.
I went to see the film intolerable cruelty a couple of weeks ago. ive never been so bored. it was that bad me and my friend just sat up the back being stupid, i was flashing at the wee man in the room projecting the film...dunno if he saw me.
at the Cinema-The Matrix...
my god that film was ammaaaaaaazing....
...ly awful!
and last night, me and my friend stayed in and watched Donnie Darko and Serendipity and this Julia Stiles film "Wicked" really quite disturbing
dogmoth.

I love Donnie Darko. They had it at a theater nearby for a midnight showing a while back.
I actually owned the soundtrack before I went to see the movie. Beautiful soundtrack, sort of ambient and creepy piano music.
When I was at the theater I kept telling people who weren't saying anything to be quiet. That's fun to do. No one knows how to react.
DD is a classic indeed
I saw it at the cinema
me and my friend Kit were going round schol quoting it to each other for about 2 weeks and everyone thought we were crazy...actually, everyone still thinks we are crazy

Donnie Darko is one of the best films I've seen in the last few years. I remember reading a review that said watching it was like experiencing a dream or a distant memory, and i have to agree, it has a strange, surreal feeling to it that was mindblowing when i saw it at the cinema. Top soundtrack too.
Have avoided Matrix revolutions as i was angered by the second film and how shite it was. I thought the first one was alrite but the second one was so pretentious. All that tedious bullshit philosophy and long-winded speech-making was blatantly an attempt to cover up the fact that it's just as trashy as 2 fast 2 furious, but not as much fun (and i thought 2 fast 2 furious was pretty poor!) Plus, where are the interesting characters, the suspense, the fear for the heroes lives, the...anything? Everybody i saw it with walked out of the cinema very depressed.

Hey *nikola*, what did you end up seeing instead of the matrix? The song 'under the milky way' which plays over the house party scene near the end of dd is gorgeous, as is 'love will never tear us apart', such a great song. Oh, i want to see the film again now!

whoops there *nikola*, just read further up this thread and you've already said what film you saw last night!
The best of the four Matrix Films, BY FAR, is the collection of short animated films; ANIMATRIX. They are a great precursor to The Matrix!!! If you haven't seen them... go and BUY the DVD it is worth it, you will want to watch it again and again. Animatrix explains the whole Matrix idea a lot better, gives you an idea of why there is that rift between the Living and the Machines. I just watched it last night, well worth the 2 1/2 hours!!!
DONNIE DARKO ROCKS!!!SURREAL!!!

The Godfather trilogy. Was hoping against hope that the third instalment wasn't as poor as I remember it being. Alas.....:(

24-11-2003, 23:47
too true...Godfather III is a disappointment. I remember one day, me and some friends watched the entire trilogy too in one sitting. Hey softlad, was the version you watched the chronologically structured one, where the flashback bits of II are placed before the start of I? It's also got some extra scenes that were cut out of the original versions. That's the version of the trilogy we watched. I think we were slouched in that sofa for about ten hours, and i was utterly wasted and drained by the time it was over. III just doesn't work as well as the other two (and after watching the first two the third one became a bit of an ordeal), but Francis Ford Coppola had really lost his touch by the time he made the third film.
The last film i watched was The Untouchables on video. Pretty good, but i don't think it's as good as some people make it out to be.
Hmmm, it's the boxed set version with G2 on two discs. Did you know that there's always supposed to be a death when oranges appear.......bit like The Sixth Sense red thing.........
The Untouchables - So-so. Not a big fan of De Palma but there are a couple a good scenes. De Niro doing his piece(s) - "I want him dead! I want his family dead!...", the church scene, the Eisenstein pram bit, but that's about it. So-so.

Went to the local cinema last night to see the silent film The Cabinet of Dr Caliguri with live Hammered Dulimer accompanyment (think Ipcress File). Pretty cool for 1919, great set design! Propaganda's Dr Mabuse video was a homage to it!
I can't belive this film did not influence a bit of Felt Mountain (especially with the Dulcimers!
diamente
25-11-2003, 11:28
wow tattmaylor, can't believe you got to see the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari at the cinema! The closest my local cinema got to showing a film that was not new was The Goonies a few months ago. Okay, so it's not Caligari, but it is a classic in its own way... Caligari is a brilliant film, so influential, and very, very strange visually. Will have to watch it again (dunno how i can do that, not an easy film to find!) to see for those Felt Mountain similarities!
De Palma's an erratic director, but i do like his films in a style-over-content way. Plotwise, films like Dressed to Kill and Body Double are absolutely laughable, but some of the set-pieces in those films are really well done, even if he does freely borrow from Hitchcock. And i have to say, i love Blow Out, Carrie and Carlito's Way, they're really good films. But The Untouchables is baffling cos it is so adored in some quarters, yet it's just as shallow as Dressed to Kill: I mean, it would have been nice if the director had delved into the characters friendships a little (Andy Garcia doesn't really do, er...anything), but in the end, like you say, it's the set-pieces that up the quality of the film a bit. That, and De Niro.

Mulholland Drive....an amazing film, probably David Lynch's best, though The Elephant Man comes very close. Saying that, The Elephant Man doesn't have The Cowboy in it. I love the scene with the cup of coffee: so funny.
A friend of mine said that I reminded him of the film director character (Adam Kesher) in Mullholland Drive.

As for 'This is the girl', that's what the movie producers (and The Cowboy!) insist Adam Kesher must say when he eventually sees the publicity photo of the woman they want to star in his film.

Yeah, i agree with that! That film gets deeply weird (more so!) and disturbing towards the end, i think. I love a lot of David Lynch's films, but that's my favourite. Never did see The Straight Story tho, which is meant to be a complete detour from his usual style. Lost Highway was really freaky, i thought.

I was thinking at the end of the film. Everyone (in UK ) said that nobody could do "The office' in the US, but that's B*llocks!!! The Coen bros have been doing it for years (but with cinematic beauty thrown in!!)

The last film i watched was The Happiness of the Katakuris. Absolutely, stupendously bonkers. It's a mix of horror/comedy/musical/drama/claymation . Miike Takashi truly is one wild director. However, while most of his films I've seen of his have been largely unpleasant and disturbing (but brilliant and thought-provoking at the same time tho), this was just a real hilarious blast. Really upbeat (though the humour was pretty twisted and dark in places), really, really funny and totally demented.

Yes, there is a HUGE spider in the film, and that sequence is absolutely amazing, really scary and intense. I take it you're scared of spiders? I am too, I was told about this sequence before I went to see it and I was getting really tensed up before the big bastard appeared. For some reason it was more the brilliance of the direction and the overall suspense of the scene that was the scariest thing about that bit, though I won't lie to you, the spider itself is pretty fucking horrible looking! I watched Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets last year and the bit in the forest with all the spiders really scared me! Maybe I shouldn't have admitted that!
Return of the King is definitely worth seeing if you loved the first two films, it's probably the best of the three.

I saw Girl with a pearl earring last night
It was brilliant, I wasn't expecting Colin Firth to be able to play that role well but he did and he was brilliant as was Scarlett johannesn(sp), she looked absolutely perfect!
Only bit I wasn't toooo sure about was the ending, didn't think that they made it clear what happened.

Have you ever been to Australia, Danni? I wasn't scared of spiders until I went there - they seem to get everywhere, two redbacks (nasty buggers) were found in a house while I was staying there, there was a funnelweb in the garden (I'm surprised anyone does any gardening there!) and I went to the toilet somewhere (in Melbourne, iirc), closed the door of the cubicle and an enormous huntsman spider crawled from under the bottom edge of the door - they're not poisonous, but they're pretty scary looking... for those brave enough to look there's a picture of a huntsman here (http://www.austmus.gov.au/factsheets/images/huntsman.jpg)! Strange, I seemed to lose interest in ablutions after that...

I went to see Blair Witch Project in the cinema, and I had to keep shading my eyes from the screen - not because the film was scaring me, but all the handheld camera stuff was making me nauseous. Great for realism effect, crap for my stomach...
I watched Bowling For Columbine yesterday - I've had it on tape from before Christmas, but I only just got round to watching it. Pretty thought provoking, although Moore does seem to ham it up a little bit too much at times. I like his sentiment, but he seems to overexaggerate and sensationalise things a little - I'm sure he'd be taken much more seriously if he just stuck to the facts all the time. But then, I'd rather have Moore to dinner than Charlton Heston any day...
Oh, and apologies to Danni and diamente for freaking them out - if it's any consolation, I'm probably as petrified of spiders as you both are after Aus...
themoodfits - your post made me smile, that's pretty much my attitude to insects and spiders. Squish all the little f***ers! Although I can probably put up with butterflies. Cockroaches, however, serve no useful purpose on this earth that could possibly outweigh the case for their total and utter annihilation. While I was living on the south coast in South Africa, the house's kitchen was infested with them - big bastards as well that stoutly refused to die. If you came into the kitchen at night, you'd turn the light on, and they'd scatter under the appliances and behind the cupboards. I started eating out for every meal after I opened the cutlery drawer and found a monster staring back at me from amidst the spoons. Bleugh! Makes me shudder just thinking about it... Curse them indeed!
Quite a way further north, I was in a bar one night in the middle of fecking nowhere, and it they'd just had a heavy rainstorm, so the insects were swarming everywhere - I got stung by some enormous stripy wasp-fly type thing, . Nobody seemed to know what it was, and after a few minutes I collapsed and lost all the feeling in my fingers and toes, then feet and lower legs, and then my arms. Which made it hard to balance while I was throwing up. Someone had some anti-whatsit drugs though, so I was bundled into the back of a car for a bit to chill out, and that pretty well sorted me out. I consoled myself with the thought that I'm pretty certain I killed the little bastard...
I reckon Bhuddism would be practical if we rid the world of those horrible crawly, stingy wee beasties...

How could you hate butterflies moodfits? I planted a butterfly garden esp. for them, we have zebra swallowtails here...they like the pentas. We also have ginormous wolf spiders, but I don't kill them because they eat all the other insectoid critters, like the mammoth of all roaches, the Palmetto bug--they normally live in palm trees or palmetto scrub--(they're ghastly and they fly)--but occasionally one will get in the house, but one of my kitties usually kills it before I freak out. Spiders do scare the fuck outta me, there's a gazillion of em around here too--creepy as hell. I usually capture any invading bug, and set it free outside if I can, even bees, i'm not allergic though.( o.k. maybe I should become a Bhuddist...maybe I was one in a past life or something)....oohhmmm....;)

I think Butterflies are Pretty when they are in Books or are far away from me, but I can't stand it when they all flutter around me, i can't stand anything fluttering around me. A little fairy could fly up to me and I'd probably smack the thing away!.

21-01-2004, 14:18
Feeling a bit odd: I am pretty ambivalent to the whole butterfly and spider thing. Their ok - they don't necessarily stir my grits nor do I hate them. I can appreciate their value to the ecosystem -- especially spiders because they eat pesky flies, gnats and mosquitoes.
The ocean/sea/water bodies of any kind however, love it! I'm not a beach bum but I really love the ocean, although I have occasion to fear it too. Like when I'm all alone sitting out just behind where the waves break, that can be a little eerie. Especially if it's late afternoon (read=feeding time)...
Cockroaches/palmetto bugs/centipedes/wasps/snakes suck the big one, to be blunt. No mincing words, that lot of vermin can rot in hell - no matter what they contribute to the ecosystem!
Cremation rules, even in death I don't want those things all over me!

Got dragged along with work (I only went or the curry afterwards!) but really enjoyed it (in a big hollywood film way it was quite subtle). Maybe it's just me, but I think Tom Cruise gets better all the time - I think this is his best film. Plus Koyuki (female lead) was beautiful. Nice comment about how a pure untouched cultures can never exist with western ideals and principles - which people should be made aware of as often as possible.

Saw the final of TRILOGY films last night.
3 seperate films that include the same characters and time line but each from a different perspective and with a different feel. One was action thriller, Two was a comedy, Three a melodrama. They can all be watched as individual films on there own or in any order. But you don't really get into it all till halfway through the 2nd film when you suddenly see things from other angles and your perception of different characters changes ...sorry quite hard to explain but fascinating, aswell as good (very french in style - long silences - don't they have radio's in France!!) films!

I really liked Nikita the first time I saw it but then I made the mistake of watching the Hollywood remake. It was only while watching Bridget Fonda and co that I realised how ridiculous the story is. To say it's far-fetched is an understatement.
I'm afraid that's ruined the original for me now.
I went to see The Human Stain despite it getting terrible reviews because I'd enjoyed the book. I had very low expectations but it was actually pretty good. The main points from the book are still in there.
And the guy who played the young Coleman Silk was very good. Anyone who's read the book will know how difficult it would be to cast that film but he was perfect.
I gave up on the remake...assassin i think it was called?
Loved the original though
Did anyone see the series? not really good but i liked it, shown at some stupid hour of the morning on channel 5

Yesterday I watched School of Rock starring Jack Black. I thought it was great, predictable but really funny and likeable. It's also introduced the term 'face-melting guitar solo' into my world, for which I am eternally grateful.

Saw Big Fish at the cinema today: really imaginative and original, and it looked great, but the story wasn't very strong, and it seemed to come to an end a bit too abruptly, but there were so many great little moments all the way throughout so I'm glad I'm watched it.

Saw Lost in Translation last night (late 12.00pm and drunkish, which I think is a god way of seeing a screening - apart from toilet stops!) and quite enjoyed it. It really captured that alone in a hotel in a foriegn contry feeling - almost to well!! There was a lot of subtle stuff in their as well if you looked for it - a think anbout it after the film type thing. And with ref. to the other past thread comment about having a go at the japanese, i think it was done to exaggerate that feeling of being in an alien culture, i don't think it was maliscious.
On music front excellent soundtrack was under used (first Kevin Shields track in credits was was only on for 10 seconds!!!)

I loved Lost in translation, I thought it was really beautiful.
I just can't get my head around the whole people talking in cinema thing, it's just so rude. My cinema is notoriously poor for attracting chatterboxes, and they piss me off every time. That's my only problem with cinemas, other than that I absolutely love them to bits, it's just the best way to watch a film, nothing can beat it. I wanna watch all my favourite films at the cinema on a huge screen if only they could be re-released. Watching Alien at last at the cinema last year was just too good. if only they'd do the same for Blade Runner....

That sounds sweet. I can't remember the last time I was in a cinema where it was nice and quiet. I like some of the smaller indie cinemas, you get to see some great stuff there, stuff you won't get to see round your 20-screen multiplex, which, despite having so many screens, still has to dedicate half of them to Lord of the Rings, which as good as it is, is not the be all/end all of cinema as we know it.

Last DVD I watched was Tipping the Velvet (old news to you guys over there) but it was just released over here. Not bad at all -although I prefer the book...Sarah Waters ...quite a writer...that's all i'm sayin'. quite a writer:o
I watched Sleepy Hollow last night for the first time, it was shown on television here. I just thought that the film was visually astonishingly beautiful but sort of empty beneath all that and not very original in plot. Johnny Depp looked the most gorgeous, though, I must say...:o Actually, he looked like our very own Ville Valo (of HIM) to me, which is always good...
Just got round to seeing LOTR (at last) - I'm probably going to see Big Fish fairly soon, but that's about all I can think of that's inspiring enough to go and see at the moment - there's not that much else I'm really that bothered about. Unless the IMAX in Manchester puts on Blade Runner - god I'd love to see that on a big screen!

Was good, its about this twin bro n sis in france in the 1960's, they sorta befriend an american student.. they are all obsessed with films.. you start to reliese as the film goes on how twisted the relationship of the bro n sis is and the friend joins in on their little 'group'.. strange film but i liked it.. maybe its cos i have a twin sis, dunno.. but i dunno i found the nearly incest bits kinda sickening.. apart from that it was good.

Saw 'Mona Lisa Smiles' -- laden with themes, all fine and good but I was more interested in the characters then the pounding message. The best acting (and character) IMHO was Maggie Gyllenhaal. Not jumping on the Gyllenhaal bandwagon, she really did a great job in bringing out a character -- which I thought was the most progressive and "here is the future" from the rest.
And I liked how this movie was much like Erin Broka-whatever as it didn't push Julia Roberts as "American sweetheart" but instead let the story come through.
One critic wrote it's "the Dead Poet's Society for women" -- not entirely true or false.

I think y'all spend way too much time watching movies when you could be playing lawn darts or croquet or otherwise enjoying one of the many fine urban yard sports available to modern people in the 21st century.
Now that I have thoroughly admonished all of you, I will discuss the movie I started watching approximately 7 hours ago. (I don't know if you Brits understand "hours", and I'm not sure how to convert them into metric - so I'll just say it was awhile ago, and we can leave it at that.)
I saw Fritz Lang's "M" on the big screen. It was spookily and wonderfully filmed. I liked looking at all the staircases and furniture.
It is basically the blueprint for every crime drama, particularly serial killer drama, that has ever been made.
Seriously.
There's a quote I read once from this one guy who must be smart because he gets quoted that says;
Originally posted by a guy who must be smart because he gets quoted

Following the logic of that smart quotable guy who is quoted above, every crime movie made after 1931 was the product of idiots.
Further following that logic, but not following it quite correctly because this new logic that's following that old logic went and turned upsidedown when it should have, in fact, been turning left at the stoplight if it was actually following the initial logic.....nevermind, I forgot. So just shut up, okay?

By the way, I'm pretty sure that actress Julia Roberts (probably not her real name) is actually a prostitute because I was watching TV one time and saw her getting money for sex from this dude. It was on channel 34 I think, but I'm not sure. I didn't see any sex taking place, but that was probably because channel 34 doesn't show that sort of thing. I just caught a glimpse of the whole thing then changed the channel really quick and pretended like I didn't notice.
Anyway, I was going to call the Entertainment Tonight show and tell them that Julia Roberts was really a prostitute, but I was pretty sure they wouldn't believe me because they're always going all ga-ga over her woman's lib stuff and all that.

The Dreamers. It was pretty good, but some of the script was crap: talk about pushing your subtexts to the fore so blatantly! Doesn't give the audience much credit, but then this film weren't exactly subtle on any of its other levels either. Still, nice that Bernardo Bertolucci's become a bit more democratic with the nudity in his old age: Last Tango in Paris was almost embarrassing in the way it had the woman in it totally naked nearly all the way through and the bloke didn't so much as take his tie off.
Anyway, The Dreamers had a kick-ass soundtrack. Bit of Hendrix and The Doors never hurt anyone. I think.

The only reason Brando wasn't naked in Last Tango In Paris was because he didn't want to reveal his fat belly on screen. He did the same with Stephanie Beacham in The Nightcomers.
Apparently they did shoot Marlon in a full frontal scene but decided not to put it in the final cut.
Long live Marlon! (sadly probably not)

fucking funny as all hell! julia roberts is extremeley overrated as an actress. i think most actresses these days are overrated. they're all mostly just second rate clothes hangers. just a dress and a smile and you get an oscar nowadays. although, i'm happy for that charlize girl, monster was a great movie. but it was predictible, wasn't it? of course she was going to get the oscar. of course. who didn't know it? all you have to do is be ugly in a movie and be pretty on the red carpet and you get an oscar. not that i have much respect for the accademy, but where are the sissy spaceks and mia farrows of our generation?

Totally agree. With everything!!! :)
I remeber seeing Donni Darko at Glastonbury, the screen was huge as big as a whales penis, bigger than that actually the only thing was I was freezing and I needed a wee. I went home and watched it again and enjoyed but it made no sense to me. well, we could combine the two topics...lyrics and movies, and adress the song by letigre "what's your take on cassavettes?". not sure if any of you have heard the song or john cassavettes. personally, i think he's one of the best filmakers in the history of cinema. he was the original independent filmaker. he is copied endlessly, and totally underecognized and underappreciated. anyone here ever seen his movies "woman under the influence" or "gloria"? just a couple of his gems.

It's true that we're never in the same room together. I reckon we are one and the same person. Glad you like Glengarry softy, me and a mate of mine were a bit hooked on that film a year or so ago, and yesterday was the first time we'd seen it in ages. Still hasn't lost any of its brilliance. Such good performances, and one of the best scripts ever.
First prize is a Cadillac, second prize is a set of steak knives...
... third prize is you're fired.
It shouldn't work.
A film adapted from a stageplay by David Mamet whos 'House Of Games' I disliked (mainly due to a truly wooden performance from lead actress Lindsay Crouse).
There's also very little action, only really two main locations, a bunch of big name male actors (uh-oh, ham alert!) and not one female appearance in the entire movie!
A recipe for disaster if ever there was one but I love it - a great film where watching actors 'act' is actually a pleasure for once.
Two thumbs up and a gold star to boot.

I have to say that the trailer for mona lisa smiles made it look awfully cheesy, but trailers are usually dreadful or if not dreadful, then sneakily misleading: After all, how many crap films have been made to look like they're great when they've been compressed into a two minute sequence?
Oddly enough some films that look terrible thanks to the trailer have turned out to be rather good when i've finally got round to watching them. Can't think of a single example at this present moment, but there have been some....
The Sunday times hated it but they also hated love actually which i absolutely loved!

Johnny depp....yum! Great fun film - I really do rate Mr Depp to be honest - I thought he was brilliant in Fear And Loathing. And in Pirates - but then he played the character as a cross between Hunter S Thompson and Keith Richards anyway, so I was bound to love it...
he and Alan Rickman...oh and Kenneth Branagh are probably ,my fave actors
I quite like Gary Oldman as well...
Sorry, we're talking about films aren't we? Right then, borrowed Cats And Dogs from my sister. Genius. Talking animals, who'd have thought it eh?

I really didn't like Pirates of the Caribbean, such a disappointment. Not funny, not exciting and merely adequately directed. It seems to me the whole Jerry Bruckheimer method of producing is just to blow up loads of money on screen. I can't deny the film was spectacular, but there was a disturbing shallowness to the proceedings that made it one of the most uninvolving films in the history of cinema! And Orlando Bloom? Can't get any blander than that dullard, and Johnny Depp can be a right self-indulgent git when he feels like it. Saying that, there were the makings of a terrific performance in there somewhere, but I don't think the script gave him much to do except prance around like a pissed monkey, which unbelievably got boring after a while. Dull, but admittedly gorgeous heroine, dull villain. Not the worst film of last summer (definitely Tomb Raider II: pure shite), but the most disappointing.
That's my two cents, anyway. :)
Definitely agree with you about Depp's performance in Fear and Loathing tho Kav: he's absolutely amazing in that, that film's a total mindfuck.
i Love fear and loathing....got the video of that upstairs somewhere, must get that down....
I think Orlando Bloom was so dull and grey and annoying but I thought JOhnny depp was great! if it want for him, that would have been the shittiest film
now they needed to fit alan rickman eating some skittles in there somewhere or Ken Branagh
oooh great pic in my mind of Ken Branagh and skittl...nevermind

If there had been lots of Skittles in Pirates of the Carribbean, then the film would have been a masterpiece.
Pirates of the Carribbean: The Curse of the Purple Skittle
Sadly, this was not to be. Textbook definition of a missed opportunity!
I agree
I can just see JOhnny Depps face whilst eating a sour skittle!
I watched the last half of All About Eve this evening, I LOVE that film, Bettie Davis is amazing

I used to think i'd go 'straight' for Johnny Depp...he's HOT in a scruffy way...but then i just watched 'The Secret Window'...sucked the 'Big One'........
(but then again so do most of Steven King's stories turned film)
Johnny's still fuckin' hot though...esp. as a pirate...

I've not heard of The Secret Window before, but yeah, a lot of Stephen King adaptations are pretty poor. Saying that, i rarely have any frame of reference as Ive not read any Stephen King books!
Carrie, Misery, Stand By Me and The Shining are the great ones.
Christine and Salem's Lot aren't bad.
'It' starts off superb but stinks badly in the second half.
Then there's all those other crappy ones that I can't remember!
ponygurl
19-03-2004, 00:57
I guess I shouldn't of said 'most' because Carrie, Misery, Stand by me (love that one), and The Shining were fuckin' Fantastic...i'll edit myself and say 'half' instead of 'most'...anything adapted for t.v. (ex. So Red the Rose, The Stand) have been shit. (have you ever noticed Stephen King has an obssession with corn???...there's always a cornfield around...wierd.)

Anyone here seen THE MAN WHO CRIED with Johnny Depp & Christina Ricci? I remember seeing the trailers for this movie and thinking "gotta see that, the clothes and set designs look impressive" -- I wonder if it's worth tracking down???

Starsky and Hutch.
Even worse than I expected. I knew I wouldn't find it very funny but when you're a cinema full of people laughing out loud at the Orange advert (even though they've surely already seen it 100 times) and the film still barely raises a giggle, you know just how bad it is.
Deplorable.

Awww, I really enjoyed Starsky and Hutch! I'm with you on those Orange ads though, they're really annoying. Saying that, the new one with Alan Cumming is probably the least painful of the lot, and it's still shit.
The new remake of Dawn of the Dead, which wasn't as good as the original, but was nonetheless very enjoyable and well made.
I might go see that tonight so you recomend it then dialemente, me and my boyf love zombie films but the zombie as changed they seem more with it dont they this day and age which for makes em scarier cause in the old films you could run away from them but the modern ones are quicker.
I'm scared now someone hold me. hehe.

Yeah, they're practically Olympic runners in the new films, aren't they? Whereas before if they were walking any slower they'd be standing still! Yeah, I mean this Dawn of the Dead was nothing incredibly special, but it got the job done and then some, and was very entertaining. Go see it.

I agree, Robert Altman is a superb director: I love The Long Goodbye, Elliot Gould gives an amazing performance in that. Short Cuts is also an excellent film.
Didn't Stanley Kubrick direct Barry Lyndon?
Felt Martin
21-03-2004, 18:27
Kubrick did make Barry Lyndon.
I'm not so sure about Altman. I really liked The Long Goodbye but I think that was more down to Elliot Gould, Sterling Hayden and (most importantly) Raymond Chandler.
Nashville, Altman's alleged masterpiece, was very disappointing for me.
Starsky and Hutch.
Yet to see a film with Ben Stiller in that I thought funny. 'Meet The Parents' is possibly the closest however even that film was pretty Hollywood formula. Mind you I'm someone that thought 'Something About Mary' was about as funny as Benny Hill on a very, very bad day.
Oh, and word to the wise - don't ever see the laff-vacuum that is 'Zoolander'...........the horror, the horror.........

I've had a bit of a movie FEST the last few days!
On video:
Master and Commander: Far Side of the World
Really enjoyed this, proper good fun. Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany were excellent in it! Great entertainment.
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
Very good, George Clooney has proved his worth even more. He can direct and then some. I was shocked as to how dark this film was in places, the publicity made it seemed kinda goofy with only a little bit of seriousness. Sam Rockwell was really good in this, he made the character really interesting, even if he was totally unlikeable. Very impressive.
Ghostbusters
All I needs to say is: 'The flowers are still standing!'
And at the cinema...
Shaun of the Dead
Absolutely loved this! Just my kind of film, very funny! Too many classic bits to mention.
The Girl Next Door
Maybe it's a guilty pleasure, but I did enjoy this. It did go on too long, and just when I thought the film was over it seemed to throw in another crisis for the characters to overcome, but it was cool to see a teen movie that wasn't preoccupied with shit, spunk and piss jokes for a change. Great soundtrack (except for the odd bit of David Gray here and there) too. And on another note, in my opinion, Elisha Cuthbert is quite simply the most beautiful woman on the planet. I think I'm in love.
The final installment to the matrix movies :) so much better than number 2 but I didnt like the ending ... too many easy answers .. shame it could of been so much better .. what a complete and utter sell out.
all matricies apart from number one are bad..
as is Monster... really rather disapointingly bad..

I hear it's about a company that offers to erase painful memories to anyone who wants to do so, and Jim Carrey wants to get rid of the memory of his relationship with Kate Winslet, but during the experiment we get to see how they got together in flashback, and I think he starts to realise throughout that it's not a good idea to want to get rid of the memory.

I love Depalma...but my favorite director of all time is Stanley Kubrick......A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Lolita, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket, A.I., Eyes Wide Shut........his vision was pure genius, to say the least.
You really have to watch his films more than once to get all the symbolic meaning...take Eyes Wide Shut for instance, when the main character is walking the streets of NY, struggling with what his wife has done to him emotionally, and contemplating his own way of getting back at her...there is a scene wHere a man who's been following him stops...RIGHT NEXT TO A STOP SIGN ON THE STREET...it's symbolic (stop what you're doing it's saying)...or when he opens up a paper, the front page reads...LUCKY TO BE ALIVE...details like that, you really have to pay attention...he was FUCKIN' BRILLIANT!
