Watched Jarhead last night. Drags a bit in places, but there's some really stark yet staggering imagery, like when the Marines are in the desert and see all the Kuwaiti oil wells aflame in the distance. And of course Jake Gyllenhaal is hot - especially in the scene where he's dancing around with a Santa hat on his cock! :D

Watched Rushmore the night before, which was pretty funny.

"Lost in Translation" (again)

Such a wonderfully subtle and restrained film.

A ships-that-pass-in-another-country story, yet handled with grace, flair and a wonderful patience that sits so well again the pace of the country where they are. Heartbraking through humour, yet still warm and fuzzy.
Bill Murray is bloody excellent and Scarlett Johanssen is remarkably assured at 18. The scene where they pass going to/from the pool is the entirety of awkward human emotion in about 90 seconds.

You won't see two people have an affair (yet not have one) with such an undercurrent of pain and guilt so well handled anywhere else. There's a moment where the two are lying on the bed fully clothed talking about where they are in their lives and Murray's hand moves about an inch or so and starts stroking her foot - it's the tiniest movement yet in the scheme of the scene feels almost like an act of unfaithfulness. Astonishingly beautiful.

If you've seen it, watch it again a second time (or more) - it's way better. When the two of them kiss and the Jesus and Mary Chain cuts in......phew, I'm so close to crying every time.
[/I])

It's funny i've seen The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou and Broken Flowers recently and Bill Murray seems to be doing one role at the mo. Silent type.

I have to say both of the above are as slow paced and well soundtracked as above but i prefered Broken Flowers more than Lost in Translation as it had a darker humour. I didn't really feel for the characters in LIT, they were a bit sad really. They both had nothing to moan about really.

The Life Aquatic was just plain weird!!!

(It's launch night on the now free FilmFour - few ads, good picture quality and no DOG. Very promising.)
I've just watched 'In the Mood for love'. You should watch it, it's the film that inspired 'Lost in Translation.
The actors: Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung are not only the most gorgeous on-screen couple in the history of cinema but they're the best actors of their generation.
The director: Wong Kar Wai is a genius. He doesn't use scripts, take years to make films, but every single one of them are a masterpiece.
The cinematography: This film is so breathtaking, I have no comments to make
In this film, Maggie Cheung and Tony don't kiss. I heard that they actually shot a sex scene but it was cut out. I was able to see little part of it in my DVD, ie Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung moaning but you don't see them and the twos kissing very passionatly
Anyways, I'll stop rambling.

WATCH THIS FILM.

PS: It's actually one of the few films that made me cry.

2046 is somewhat of a sequel to In the mood for Love. Well, it has the same character, Tony Leung, only he's a writer and Maggie Cheung is an 'old love'. I think, it's in the same universe but not really a sequel.:D
Well, I prefer In the Mood for Love to Lost in Translation. I loved 2046 too.:D

Earlier in the week I went to a screening of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette, which was BRILLIANT! It looks great (especially the costumes), and you can see a lot of elements of her earlier movies in it, like a scene where MA and her friends go out to the gardens to watch the sunrise that reminded me of the scene in The Virgin Suicides where Lux and trip fall asleep on the football field after the prom, and MA is a bit like Charlotte in Lost In Translation - suddenly thrown in to this exotic world with very mannered traditions that she doesn't really understand. The soundtrack's really cool too - there's all these 70s and 80s tracks on it, like Siouxsie & The Banshees' 'Hong Kong Garden' in a ball scene and Bow Wow Wow's 'I Want Candy' when MA is picking out increasingly outlandish clothes and wigs. I really recommend it.

Episide of V the series on the Sci Fi Channel. I can remember watching it in the eighties when it 1st came out and everyone was watching it. The acting is sometimes appaling and the special effects are even worse.
Its still addictive to watch though with the old jewish guy showing the kids how to
protest about the aliens and reminding everyone about the horrors of the concentration camps. Still powerful stuff.

Turns out the word of mouth is right - this will indeed be the next slow burner in a Donnie Darko stylee. Not in terms of being a major headfuck but by being that must see movie that leeches from person to person until it's built up a critical momentum.

"Audition"...a lovely Japanese horror flick that I highly recommend!

Takasi Miike makes a lot of movies... a lot of movies. His output is rather hit or miss, but the good ones are usually VERY good. The majority of them tend to be Yakuza flicks - basically gangster movies. Of course, Miike's gangster movies always involve some rather odd twists and a great deal of perversity. My favorite from him, so far, is "Ichi The Killer." - and I warn, the movie is not for weak stomachs. I found the violence so over the top and ridiculous that I actually started laughing at some rather disgusting things. But I do that anyway. And Miike is great at black humor. 'Audition' is a bit out of the ordinary for Miike, but if you liked it, you may want to pick up other films by him. Most of his movies have very disturbing scenes, but films like Visitor Q are, in my opinion, pure art. He's also put out some very nice movies (i.e., not ultra-violent) like The Bird People of China.

Besides, how can you not like a director who makes lines of dialogue like this:

Iranian guy: Let's watch the bunnies!
Chinese guy: You always watch the bunnies.
White guy: Dirty ol' man! Penis man, penis man.
Chinese guy: Penis man, you sausage.

I watched 'Brick' a few weeks ago and liked it a lot. It's one of those movies where the storyline and acting are so well done that it's easy to suspend disbelief and just enjoy it. Sort of like a cross between an 80s John Hughes movie and 50s gritty film noir.

Takashi Miike makes a lot of movies... a lot of movies. His output is rather hit or miss, but the good ones are usually VERY good.

Second only to the god that is "Beat" Takeshi Kitano. A positive genius of a man at anything he touches - Miike is close but, as you say, with a more scattergun approach.

My favorite from him, so far, is "Ichi The Killer." - and I warn, the movie is not for weak stomachs. I found the violence so over the top and ridiculous that I actually started laughing at some rather disgusting things.

I imported the uncut region3 of that - you wouldn't believe the extra stuff that didn't make the censors cut. Like you I laughed at some then caught myself doing it and stopped.

Most of his movies have very disturbing scenes, but films like Visitor Q are, in my opinion, pure art.

The greenhouse scene is a moment of perverse comedy legend.... :D

This annoys me to no end, when these production companies come in and sort of "take over" the neighborhood. Where I live they've been known to do filming for the Sopranos and Law & Order (plus we get some features coming in to do a one off as well). My neighborhood is very "New York", meaning full of old beautiful brownstones built during the late 1800's/early 1900's, so they like to use it as a backdrop. The problem is they take over the streets with their trailers, trucks and equipment and leave no parking for the residents (we all street park). It's a bloody pain in the arse!

Tell Corv to give 'em hell! (although I do like Woody Allen and Ewan McGregor) :)

here ya go....I think this may be Ewan whotsiface and Colin Farrell (never heard of him although I did see Ewan McGregor on some thing about riding a motorbike arouind the world)..apart from that I don't really take much notice of Hollywood films so I just don't know these guys!

and yes Steph they do just take over and think that you'll do what ever they tell you because they think you think they're somehow worthy of your awe! To which I can only reply Fuck off!

One of the security guys snuck onto the finger next door to Demelza and whipped his willy out for a pee so I look at him get his attention and say "Fucking charming!" and he looked all embarrassed and scuttled off...apart from that this crew seemed reasonably well mannered..TV crews are far far worse...

Whatever they're back next week.

... and by the way if you go to see the movie listen very carefully you may just hear Alison belting out Human in the background because I was playing it reasonably loud at the time!

I'm having a "Film Frenzy" weekend.

What this actually means is that I've slapped loads of films on my PVR and really had to sit down and catch up !

So far, since Friday night:-

Wolf Creek: (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0416315/)
Really good Aussie horror. Kinda like a slasher version of "Picnic at Hanging Rock". Some great subtle building and some wonderful sick surprises later on. Very good indeed - I wish I'd got round to seeing this sooner !

Once Upon a Time in The Midlands: (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301684/)
The Shane Meadows film which didn't break him as it should - an unbelievable cast (Robert Carlyle, Vanessa Feltz, Ricky Tomlinson, Kathy Burke, Rhys Ifans and even Vic Reeves & Bob Mortimer with cameos as "Plonko the Clown" and "Kung-Fu Clown") and a story styled on wild west tales but set very much in the heart of English down-at-heel city life.
Touching and very funny.

Dead Mans Shoes: (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419677/)
Another Meadows film and one I love and am watching for about the fifth time. Utterly transfixing and stays with you - this is a 'must see'. A soldier returns home to find his brother dead and sets out to get revenge. Played out in the housing estates and tower blocks but in a quite unique way and with a feel all of it's own. You'll never see a gas mask in the same way again.

About to watch:-

R-Point: (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417072/)

Set in 1972 during the Vietnam war this Korean movie is, by all accounts, where a group of soldiers start getting supernatural encounters...and certainly not friendly ones, at that. Quite looking forward to it !

Recorded Once upon a time in the midlands and kagemusha this week from film 4 and didn't get either of them so they were deleted.

Badlands on tonight on bbc 2

It was a funny movie, don't know if I'd watch it again, but it was a perfect movie for last night with my mate, we were both in a funny mood and thought it was really funny - you know one of those movies where everything is funny when you're watching it with your friend but when you're on your own it's not as funny?

I bought it on DVD - amazing movie.

As for the last one of my four listed, R-Point, I have to admit that I'm totally spooked beyond rationale. Yeah, it's a Vietnam based film, but it's as full of creeping dread as things like Ringu and Odishon and some of the moments in it had me watching through my fingers.

Very, very scary. In fact, I'm going to go to bed early and hide. Honestly. That's some freaky Korean mindfuck right there !

I like Kurosawa movies, what few I've seen. Yojimbo was good. Rashomon was good, too (even if some of Mr. Mifune's hooting and hollering reminded me of Daffy Duck).

Ran was awesome. The scenes of armies on horseback sweeping across the landscape are as exquisite as any I've ever seen on a big screen.

Tonight I watched 'Der Untergang'. I generally avoid WWII movies, particularly those about the Nazis. I've just had enough of them. But, this film was really very good, historically accurate, and offered a different perspective from all the millions of 'Gee, wasn't the holocaust horrible?' type pictures. It's drawn from the accounts of Hitler's secretary. The man who played Joseph Goebbels made my skin crawl with his portrayal - seriously creepy. This is the sort of movie that takes up residence in your thoughts for days after watching - I know I'll still be thinking about it tomorrow.

Second only to the god that is "Beat" Takeshi Kitano. A positive genius of a man at anything he touches - Miike is close but, as you say, with a more scattergun approach.

I watched 'Sonatine' last night. Good movie. I think Kitano's signature acting move is to just ... sort of ... sit there staring off into space. It's in both 'Zatoichi' and 'Sonatine' (and it's appropriate to the storyline of each - whether ennui or blindness is the cause). At the risk of sounding like an abject fanboy - Kitano manages to just sit there with more pathos than Al Pacino exhibits at his most screamingly frenetic.

Utterly and completely correct. That latter bit often comes up in convesation with a few out of my friends that love his stuff. It's certainly understated but never without force and drive - somehow he gets the two in sync.

Favourite scene in 'Sonatine' is him being reunited with "the other Beat" in the bus stop for the little cameo of the two of them in full comedic tour de force. A bag of packed lunch is a great comedy tool.

I should have known better. It was never going to work.

"The Rage: Carrie 2"

Possibly one of the worst acted, worst directed, worst lit, most inept films I've ever seen and certainly the worst sequel ever. The only reason this could have been made was either a tax break or that they hated the first film so much and wanted to crap on it from a great height.

Some films are so bad that they become excellent. This just stays bad.

This didn't cost me anything to see and I'd still like my money back.

21-08-2006, 23:24
I can easily describe Sam Taylor-Wood's film.

It's called Death Valley and starts with an establishing shot of said valley, a bleak, sandy, featureless landscape that's probably featured in westerns over the years.
A guy appears, takes down his trousers and has a wank. Five minutes later, he fertilises the barren soil!

Matthew Barney's film is somewhat more complex and much harder to describe. There has probably never been such a contact between man and machine in any other film you'll ever see, is all I can say!

'A Bug's Life' was on earlier, I love the French performing woodlice or whatever they are. They make me laugh.

It's also from the period that Pixar could do no wrong: Toy Story/A Bug's Life/Toy Story 2/Monster's Inc.

Then 'Finding Nemo' came out which was the biggest stinking pile of shit ever. I wanted that fish to die. Truly the worst Disney film ever, and I include Fantasia in that - it was that shoddily put together.

Since then, a bit meh, 'Invincibles' was a bit of a return to form, IMO, but I saw Cars with my little brother the other day, which was nice but would have sticked out like a saw thumb if it was produced in the 'Pixar Golden Period' I reckon.

Apparenty Toy Story 3 is in the pipeline - it has a lot to live up to.

I'm currently engrossed in Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

I can quite vividly remember seeing it aged 10 in the cinema when it came out in 1977 and being blown away by it (and, if I recall, quite scared !). Pretty much everybody was coming out either silent or trying hum or sing the five notes.

Even watching it today, some 29 years or so later it's not dated or suffered at all and stands the test of time amazingly well. It never gets overly emotional or mawkish, never descends into farce, and pushes real people above most else. Yeah, the special effects still work well but it's the peoples reactions to them that makes it.

Trivia: The look on the boys face when he's looking amazed staring out of the house was gained by Dreyfuss unexpectedly appearing during the take holding an absolutely huuuuge teddy bear. Cue genuine surprise and awe in the childs eyes. Genius.

Finally saw 'League of Gentlemans Apocalypse' yesterday.

Odd, very odd.

It's like "LoG meets Time Bandits" in the way they hop around between things and it all gets mixed in together as it goes on. Only darker, though, very much more deadpan in places.

Did I mention it was odd ?

Odd, very odd.

Looking forward to seing that on Film Four on wednesday :)

Watched Bertolucci's "The Dreamers" last night which I enjoyed. I was fully expecting it to be in Italian and watched the first half hour with english subtitles, only to notice that the lips were not matching the Italian words AT ALL (I had been busy reading the subtitles till then!), and then realised that it is actually an English film anyway and for some reason I had been watching the Italian dubbed version:confused:

Anyway, watched the rest in English and enjoyed it, quite a strange film though, but very sexy in parts. Loved all the old French New Wave references though :)

Just watched 'Azumi', by Ryuhei Kitamura of 'Versus' fame.

It's a Japanese samurai assassin movie - the twist is that Azumi is a baby girl taken in by an all male assassin squad & their master and grows up with them as one of them, learning their ways and joining them on the mission which makes up the story of the film.

Watching a beautiful young girl slay over 200 guys in one fight alone is something quite extraordinary !

Went to see "The Black Dahlia" tonight. Hugely disappointing.:(

The script doesn't seem to have gone beyond the first draft; the direction is ponderous and some of the acting is so dire, it beggars belief.

I haven't actually read James Ellroy's novel but I probably should, especially if it helps wipe the memory of the film.

I enjoy this movie, it's very honest and it's very very disturbing. It's banned in most movie stores, but if you do blockbuster online you can add it to your Que. This director is that way with all of his movies (Storytelling, Welcome To The Dollhouse, etc.) They all leave you wondering - Did he really just show that? Then later you sit there interpretating out what he was really trying to get at, and what part of social behaviours/society/life was he explanning/criticizing.

This film got mentioned a few times during conversations about Requiem For A Dream, another film that drags you through the mire yet leaves you glad you did so. A few of us have a love/dread relationship with RfaD - if that is the same then I'll have to get a watch and see.

No it's a very different type of disturbing than Requiem. It's not a drug movie at all. I really don't know how people placed those movies along side of eachother. That's still confusing me. I could see maybe the French flick Irreversible, but not Requiem.

It's a bit more "Average Joe" real life situation depressing - (if that sentence makes any sense.) I would describe more, but I hate people who give too much information on a movie to someone who hasn't seen it.

Anyways, you really should view it if you enjoy thinking things through for yourself - the meaning behind any of his films have to be found. Unlike Hollywood where the plot is so thin, that in the first five minutes you already know how it's going to end.

I guess it's a method/mood thing rather than being genre or theme. From comments there seems to be some sort of analogous cinéma vérité at the heart of each, even if RfaD takes a few flights of (drug induced) fantasy which lift (or, indeed, plummet) it into something a little trippier direction wise.

I mean, yeah, I'd go and see it if you think it's something you'd like (I liked it but I knew the story already so it made it a bit boring and REALLY slow) I thought Josh Hartnett was pretty good in it to be honest and I really don't like him very much. Hilary Swank pissed me RIGHT off! Mia Kirshner wasn't in it enough (but then I didn't expect her to be!) Scarlet Johansson was okay... bit of a non entity in the film. Also, thanks to my 2 hours of sleep the previous night I did nearly fall asleep half way through! "Lady Vengence"

The third film in the trilogy by Park Chan-wook (Sympathy For Mr Vengeance / Oldboy / Lady Vengeance)

Not as visceral as Oldboy (still just about my favourite of the three) but still very strong. All three feature kidnap or imprisonment as their central pillar and this final slice takes a very clever twist of featuring three of very different motive/reason.

Korean cinema is still very much where it's at currently.
