I'm a huge Lynch fan - I love that film! It's called the straight story because it's about the only film he's made which isn't completely surreal (unless you count the woman who can't stop running over deer). One of my fave bits in the film is when he's setting off down a long road on his tractor and the camera pans up to the sky and you expect some sort of passage-of time moment - but the camera then lowers again to reveal he's only gone about 20 metre's - very funny! I love it when film plays against your expectations.

Just watched Sideways - what a great film - sooooo funny and moving too - has anyone seen it? The bit where she explains why she loves wine so much was amazing

I've seen that, and was really impressed with it. I got sent it at work and wasn't expecting much from it, but it was really funny and touching. I could have done without seeing that fat guy running down the street naked though!

That's a great film. I had a definite tear in my eye where the old man is talking to the pregnant runaway girl about family by the campfire.

Last movie I watched was Gone With The Wind yesterday on telly. Yes, it's slushy melodrama, but it's one of those films I can't help but watch when I come across it on TV.

Awww yes. Its so good.

The simplicity at the end. All that work to try and meet his brother. Then when he gets there; no hugs and pointless dialogue. And his brother looks so mean at first and then suddenly his face seems to soften. I swear I was nearly crying and thinking so much about someone I love. Films hardly ever get anything out of me, unless they are as well done as this.

Went to see Brokeback Mountain today - liked it alot although I prefered the book. Heath Ledger is really good in it (is it me or does he really look like George Bush??) and the sight of Jake wearing just cowboy boots was quite nice too ;)

Also, whatsherface from Dawson's creak is in it and she's good too and whoever it is who plays Jake's wife is very funny - her hair got better and better with every scene!

The notebook

Behind every great love is a great story.

Adapted from Nicholas Sparks' best-selling novel, and directed by Nick Cassavetes (the son of legendary director John Cassavettes).

A sweeping love story told by a man reading from his faded notebook (James Garner) to a woman in a nursing home (Gena Rowlands - real-life mother of Nick Cassavetes). 'The Notebook' follows the lives of two North Carolina teens from very different worlds (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams). Though her upbringing takes place in an antebellum mansion, and he grew up in the kind of house where musicians strum on the porch, that doesn't stop Noah and Allie from spending one incredible summer together, before they are separated, first by her parents and then by WWII.

After the war is over, everything is different. Allie is engaged to a successful businessman, and Noah lives alone with his 200-year-old house that he lovingly restores. But, when Allie reads a newspaper article about Noah's handiwork. She knows that she's got to find him, and make a decision once and for all about the path her life - and her love - must take...

One of my all time favourites and the Black Cherry imagery is perfectly in tune with it.

I shudder to think what this years' remake is going to be like. Especially with an old ham like Nicholas Cage in the lead role.:(

Mean Girls! We all love that movie in my house. It's top of the list on the sky+ thing and we decided we are NEVER deleting that. It's so good. I wouldn't like to be in that school though.

I went to see King Kong last night. Amazing! The special effects really worked for this movie. Although there was a really scary bit with creepy crawlies in it. Did anyone see the big with the spider in Lord of The Rings. Now if you found that scary and disgusting, multiply it by 1000 and you get this scene. I was jumping off my seat. Apart from that really good movie.

The second being: "He's losing his mind, and I'm reaping the benefits".

And it owned my ass! For a comic book style movie about vampires vs werewolves - where my expectations of Oscar calibre acting & writing obviously aren't there - it ruled for what it was. Best new silly action packed over-the-top violence & gore franchise since Blade in my opinion. And no matter how bad some people think the plot may be, it's still light years more clever and less ghey than that horrible Matrix trilogy any day of the week.

I tend to watch stuff like that though just to have an out-of-the-ordinary experience. It's nasty, but it's a good way to cleanse your mental palette of all the garbage pumped into it everyday through all the billboards/sitcoms/adverts/re-runs of "Friends"/people-who-all-dresstalkthink-the-same/typical cliche-ridden-panderings/ugly people/anything else which tries to colonize your psyche by invading through your eyeballs.

Now I'm going to go watch a Dr. Seuss cartoon.

Saw Match Point yesterday - a lot better than the reviews led me to believe. I think they were quite unfair about it. Some of the dialogue was a bit clunky, but apart from that I thought it was fine. And Jonathan Rhys Meyers and the guy who played his brother-in-law were both hot.

"Ring Of Bright Water" - lovely. I think when the one moment of violence comes, it`s all the more shocking because the rest of the film is so bucolic. And not a sniff of the social politics that seems to ride on the back of all today`s cinema like a deformed Siamese twin. Beautiful to watch!

"Casshern" - Japanese, two hours and forty minutes and mindbending.

(Man vs machine) vs other men (kinda)

It makes pretty much any Western futuristic film look staid and lifeless - there was literally a million things happening on screen at any given time. The latter end became a musing on the nature of life itself and the human condition.....only with giant robot wars too at the same time :D

I think I understood about 2/3rds of it but it was wonderful overall.

Me and my hubby had the sound coming through an amplifier and then we plugged two sets of headphones into it. We thought this way we could have it loud (we watched it in the evening) and not disturb Emily while she was asleep.

The bit where the girl is looking out the window of the log cabin and that pole goes through the window made me s**t myself. Also there were a few scenes where those 'things' were jumping out of the caves that made me really jump.

I just finished watching The Wicker Man, and I feel about as burnt over as poor Sargent Howie. I wish he could have met his fate with the same resolve as Stephen in the Book of Acts, perhaps been a bit more forgiving (for that is the one aspect of grace that is the greatest divide between any paganism that is based on appeasing envious gods and the Christianity that the apostles preached). But who am I to judge.

There is a nice bit in the book that Hardy an Shaeffer wrote from the screenplay (I skipped to the end on that one; sorry) where he manages to get some of the sacrifical birds free before he dies; good touch.

I am a bit puzzled by what he screamed at the very end, though.

Hope you recover soon!

It is a disturbing film, but I regard it as a (very) British classic. Whether it should be classified as a "horror" film is debatable... it could even be thought of as a musical!

There are a few different ideas as to Howie's final scream, but I believe he is saying "Failure!" - presumably referring to the islanders and not himself.

I have not read the book you mentioned - that's interesting about the freeing if the birds.

Did you see the director's cut? There is an extra 9 minutes at the start - the letter and the church scenes - which help the narrative considerably.

You know, it would be kind of cool if he did scream 'failure' in relation to the freed birds. As for the book, I checked the local library's website to see if they had the Wicker Man and I found that they had a book as well, subtitled 'a novel of religious sexuality and pagan murder'.

Didn't enjoy it quite as much as I did at the cinema, probably because when you're watching it at home it become less about the cinematography and more about the plot.

Not that I didn't wholly enjoy it, it's just that with the music and beautiful shots less apparent, it was never going to be as good as the last time I saw it.

When thinking out what I would watch this weekend, I figured that Captain Willard and Colonel Kurtz would be the perfect partners of Sargent Howie and Lord Summerisle. Both journeys end in suitably pagan places to fight out a battle between order and chaos.

Watched Cecil B. Demented, The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie and Mrs Henderson Presents over the weekend. Mrs Henderson was pretty good (though I could have done without seeing Bob Hoskins naked! Shame you only see Will Young's arse in it and not the front, which I'm told is quite impressive), and evoked the period well. Cecil B. Demented was funny. It was one of the only John Waters films I hadn't seen before.

The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie was great. I'd read the book but never seen the film all the way through. Maggie Smith as Jean Brodie's scenes with the puritanical headmistress are wonderfully sneery (Ah, chrysanthemums... such serviceable flowers...’).

I watched Ong-Bak with my four year old brother which was reallly irresponsible, but if you've ever had to mind Joseph for a day you'd realise that anything that holds his attention is a godsend.

I justified it to my stepmum when she walked in by saying "really, martial arts on screen is more like dancing than fighting", and getting Joseph to say that "kicking people is only OK if you're on television".

OMG that's one of my favourite films ever! The scene when he goes to the whore house and just talks to her, and apologises - and she slowly realises who is talking to her - that's one of the most moving scenes ever made in my opinion! And it also has an amazing soundtrack by Ry Cooder.

Yup, that was a very touching movie....!

I've just watched Manderlay. I liked it! But now I have learned how to make a selection of what I like and what I don't like in Lars Von Trier's movies.... What I mean is that sometimes he annoys me a LOT and I can't get rid off the feeling.... now I just focus on what I like in the movie and leave the rest behind

I watched 'Alfie' (the original) last night. Probably a bad idea as I'm going through a bit of a red-head obsession at the moment and Jane Asher is just amazing. One thing about that film though: Michael Caine is just too much of a horrible person in it to be a 'lovable rogue', I can't stand his character.

I watched Pi today. I think its not as difficult to follow as everyone says it is, but its an involving watch. The fact that its only an hour and a quarter helps the film as well. It ends just before you start getting pissed off by it. Aranofsky really has a way of beating you over the head doesn't he?

When that film finishes you think "That's brilliant, I never want to watch that again."

It's a fiver in Fopp as well but I can't bring myself to buy it. I might be able to stand it with a commentary, but that film has the devil inside it.

Somewhere on here, possibly even this thread, I mention how I felt after my last viewing. I'd drunk a lot of Absinthe and it really wasn't a good combination.

Really good film, a clever thriller about a deaf girl who gets caught up in heist, where her lip-reading skills come in very handy. There's one tiny bit of Mallrats where Jay does this random bit of moshing into Silent Bob who picks him up and 'puts him back into the pit' - it always really makes me laugh.

I love My Name Is Earl, it cracks me up! I often have to watch an episode twice to catch stuff I miss 'cause I've missed it when I was laughing. I like how it manages to be heart-warming too, but not in a cheesy way.

I keep hoping Kevin Smith or Jason Mewes might make a guest appearance, since they're mates with Jason Lee.

A couple of bottles of wine perhaps?

I think it would be great to have a sideways party - where everyone who comes watches the film and has to match the cast drink for drink (including the spitbucket if you're feeling adventurous!). Downside - could be expensive and you may need a kidney transplant afterwards.
