Who said you could have two?
No, I haven't seen 'Veronique' yet. I have seen 'A Short Film About Killing' though. People who go around talking about films that affect them should be made to see that. I saw it over two years ago and everything in it still resounds within me. I just can't undersatnd how such a film made it past the communist sensors. Everybody should watch it.
Watched 'American Psycho' again last night. One of the only two films I know (Trainspotting being the other), that do the brilliant book justice. Christian Bale is so well cast, and the Paul Allen killing scene (replete with backwards dance shuffle to Huey Lewis and the News) is fried gold.

Alright alright...you can have Irene Jacob, I'll have Julie Delpy...and we can wrestle for Juliette Binoche. Or if you'd prefer, we could share I suppose.
I did read a very good film book a few months back where they discussed how 'A Short Film About Killing' made it past the censors. I forget the name of it at the moment, but I'll see if I can it out for you. Very interesting read.

American Psycho is okay,I watched it last night and I've seen it once before.Christian Bale is a wonderful in it,is it wrong to be attracted to him in that mode?
Did anyone watch that west world last night with yul bryner (however u spell his name) its odd how it was directed by the bloke who wrote the jurrasic park books, because its of the same vein almost.

Alien versus Predator.
Hmmm... not bad, actually. A lot of nonsense but then so are most sci-fi/action/horror films. It was better than Alien 3 and 4 but sorely lacking action.
Hope to see Lost in Translation soon. I think I'll like it.
I just went to see Closer at the cinema

Closer is written by Patrick Marber, who has been a demi-god in my eyes ever since he was Peter O'Hanrahahanrahan in The Day Today.
Just seen 'Old School' - I found it funny. I can appreciate the highest and lowest forms of art, but never what's in between.

In that spirit, I'll admit that I saw Return Of The Living Dead: Part II many years ago. I was in the mood for a moron movie, and it was either that or Braddock: Missing In Action Part III. I think I chose wisely.

Watched the original and classic 'Assault On Precinct 13' last night. The film rules!
Unfortunately, tonight I'm off to see the poo remake, because my friend Katie is an Ethan Hawke fan. I'll report back on this travesty later...
Rickyroo
09-02-2005, 17:12
So yeah, the remake then...
...a passable and quite well-made action film. 40 minutes longer than the original and full of detracting symbolism (it's set on a wintery New Years Eve, Ethan Hawke is a bit wussy and will eventually prove his manhood by killing loads of bad guys. Good grief) Good performances all round though.
The ending blows. Hawke's character let's all the crooks go afterwards. What a cliche  And the film contains absolutely none of the wit or imagination that John Carpenter infused either.
Obviously, I didn't like the film. But it is a passable action flick. Undemanding. Not great. Watch original instead. And it's got Ja Rule in as well...*sigh*

I have just seen Secretary. And my mind is a bit blown right now. Not by how weird it should have been but by how close to orthodoxy it actually is. There are a lot of 'normal' love stories that are in fact more perverted than this, because they don't show how costly real love is.
The 'hunger strike' bit is one of the most awesome things I have seen. Like Jacob wrestling with God and crying out "I will not let thee go, except thou bless me," so Lee engages in the ordeal for recognition from Edward, and recieves her blessing.
I know I sound a bit big for my britches, trying to put religious spin on this. But I don't think this film is too slim a nail to hang so heavy a load on.
On my way to the library, I was wondering if I was doing the right thing checking this out; after all, is this what an upstanding christian fella watches on a night before church. My anxiety was not helped by the fact that my pastor's wife came up to me to say hi while I was there. I said I came to get a DVD. I must say I was relieved when she did not ask just what movie it was.
But I took it home, and Lee, Ed and I got along fairly well enough.
So there, Sandii; see what you made me do?

Ok, i got a UGC unlimited card, and managed to see ten films in a month, which totals to a quid per movie!
1. Assault on Precinct 13
Perfectly enjoyable, solid fun, though a few lame plot holes spoiled it a bit. Rather anonymous too compared to the original.
2. Closer
Very theatrical, and that's not a bad thing. Very intense, very well acted (shiiiiit, even Julia Roberts. Well, almost.) and refreshingly frank.
3. White Noise
Pure po-faced shite.
4. Sideways
Best film I've seen in ages! So funny, so lovely, so so brilliant!
5. Ray
Very solid stuff. Jamie Foxx was excellent. A respectable film.
6. Meet the Fockers
Trash, but funny. Dustin Hoffman made me laugh. I always forget what a good actor he is.
7. The Spongebob Squarepants Film
Seriously good. So funny!
8. Team America: World Police
Wasn't sure about it at first, but this is funny. Some of the jokes were a bit pathetic in their attempts to shock, but most of it worked. The puppet sex scene and 'America: FUCK YEAH!!' were the best bits, even if the puppets had no bits of their own.
9. 2046
Beautiful follow-up to In the Mood for Love. Got to admit i didn't get all of it, but it got me. And then some.
10. Can't remember what I watched! Though i know i saw ten films during the month!
Also, this month i saw The Life Aquatic, and it was a good film. Wes Anderson's worst to date, but that's only compared to his earlier films, and there aren't many films better than Rushmore in my opinion!
Also, on DVD, watched Love Liza, Dogville, Japanese Story, Dead End and loads more i can't remember!
Just saw the trailer for the new Star Wars movie.
It looks the best of the three recent ones.

That me reminds me of xmas and watching The Great Escape with my boyfriend and his parents and throughout the whole film they both kept saying things like
'He's dead now....oh and so is he' 'He died of cancer' 'he died in a car crash' 'oh but he's still alive'
The last film i saw was Constantine. It was quite scary, but there was a cute cat in it and it didn't get hurt thank goodness!!;)

i saw ring 2, didn't like it...my hair is properly straight at themoment and therefore really long, i was hiding behind my hair as it was over my face...i was hiding behind my hair until my friend told me i looked like samara when i did that!!
I saw a 20min film on caravaggio today at the national gallery today..that count? it was so good
god you would've freaked me out if i had seen you.i hate the whole hair over the face thing from Ring and Grudge.something about not knowing quite what the person looks like behind the hair, really gives me the eebie jeebies.
hehe i think I scared me when she told me. I then hid behind my hands instead...i just figured no one ould notice thats what i was doing if i hid behind my hair

Napolean Dynamite is a fantastic film!! So bizarre and understated - I was in stitches.
I watched an excellent film last night - "Romance and Cigarettes" - its got a greatcast and is half musical with all the actors suddenly bursting into song everyone once in a while and Kate Winslet plays this absolute dirty whore of a redhead with a thick northern accent - shes pull it off (as it were) fantastically :o
hmmm since my last visit I've seen rather a few movies,

Freaks
and rather a few more but can't remember them.
An Asian horror thing called The Eye. Slightly crappy.

Saw Kingdom of Heaven last night ...very dark film for ridley, can see why it was not a major sucess. A bit bleak for the Gladiator fans.
Although he did skip alot of interesting historical stuff he could have put in . There was alot of stuff he needed to tell you in advance to understand why they were all there but instead he spent to much time trying to make Orlando look broody. Plus whenever there is a film about the Crusades you can't avoid those Monty Python moments. (ie.e scenes with council in Jerusalem. :D )
I can't imagine it upseting anyone politically as most of the historical stuff is largely a sub plot. Prefered Terry Jones series ...always fascinated by the Crusades though.
I like the idea of stuff about the Crusades being brought up in this present climate. i.e.
...things life was pretty grim in europe and even the church was losing power (aswell as it's hold on the HolyLand). So they wiped up a idea that if you go and kill some arabs (infindels) your sins will be forgiven. As things were pretty depressing in Europe, and the Church was more manipulative than out present media, everyone was willing to face certain death in order to book there place in heaven.
Wasn't that what the guy who flew the plane into the Trade Centre was thinking!!

Speaking of films I saw The Ring 2 (remake) the other day.
Not qute as good as the first BUT the whole build up and scene with the Deers is one of the scariest things i've seen in ages.
Even that first bit where the kid looks across from the fair at a Deer in a field freeked me out ...never mind later. Still not quite sure why? Maybe it's becuase the Deer is computer generated and the eyes are darker/more prominent that usual... needed a cuppa after that whole segment. They obviously had watched The Birds before shoting that part.!!
I dislike the whole idea of Kingdom of heaven, things like that and Gladiator just bore me.
I watched Interview with the vampire last night...crap film, doesn't stick to the book but its quite funny, love the ending.

Hey Tattmaylor, did you not get freaked out when she was crawling up the well at the end of Ring 2 and that 'girl' was chasing her. Hate the way she's all rickety when she crawls, like her bones are breaking - gross. Some other films I've watched recently - The Chronicles Of Riddick (Vin Diesel - SCHWING!), The Rock (better than I thought it was going to be), Slingblade (fab film, shame you cant buy it on R2 dvd). To be honest i love both of them for the way they are shot/directed. In my view they were better than the originals.
They have that really dark insettling atmosphere like those old Shinning, Exorcist...and of course Hitchcock films. Horror films these days are all about shock and gore they forget about the unsettling nature old films had (as they had no budget for effects). The Birds is still one the best horror films around!

ah... "Japanese Dawsons Creek with Machine Guns" :)
Second film was apparently shit!!!
As for The Birds i like the ending. It was obviously fictional so there was no need for a rational explanation to it all. I hate some films when they try (and fail) to justify the madness by trying to explain it, thinking if you give it a scentific answer you will somehow be more shocked. But as we know these days 'fact is often stranger fhan fiction'.
I mean Donny Darko is a frustrating ending. The film gave you some many possibilities and no time to process them. So first time you see you feel kind of cheated you weren't following properly - and have to watch it again.

Dead Man's Shoes: brilliant, and very bleak. Great performance by Paddy Considine, who was in My Summer of Love and was excellent in that too.
Films that have impressed me very much lately: The Station Agent, Goodbye Lenin, Manhattan (not a new film, but it was the first time I'd seen it, and it's great!)
Watched about forty minutes of Saw last week and turned it off. It was the cinematic equivalent of being tortured. Admittedly very well made, but what's the point? I like horror films that are like the Nemesis ride at Alton Towers: terrifying, but exciting, exhilarating. This was like one of those cheapo rides you get at funfair rides: not exciting, just queasy. Oh well.

Eventually saw TEAM AMERICA last night ...haven't laughed out loud that much for years ...it was SO wrong, yet SO right!!! :D
From puppet jokes, celebrity lampooning, f**k evryone that's how good humour should be... I caan just imagine Trey and Matt taking PC critism with "hey, they're just puppets".
...and of course teh songs we're great especially the hero's love song!!
I miss you more then Michael Bay missed the mark
When he made Pearl Harbor
I miss you more than that movie missed the point
And that’s an awful lot girl
And now, now you’ve gone away
And all I’m trying to say is
Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you
I need u like Ben Affleck needs acting school
He was terrible in that film
I need u like Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part
He’s way better than Ben Affleck
And now all I can think about is your smile
and that shitty movie too
Pearl Harbor sucked and I miss you
Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?
I guess Pearl Harbor sucked
Just a little bit more than I miss you
...and of course ..."AMERICA, F**K YEAH"
...and the final speech!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Ryder is a ugly loud mouthed talentless dope head...Ian Curtis was a genius (without a dought)...most geniuses are in some way or another regarded by the shallow minded and emotional incompetent minority, percieved as threatning, anti social, abusive (self) misunderstood people who drink life, absorb it like a sponge,good,bad,evil,.....everything,they have no defence.....what would we do and learn without them.

Ian Curtis may have been a genius, but he made he was a hippocrite who made his wife's life a living hell and who arguably had fascistic sympathies. It is possible to be a genius and a cunt simultaneously.
While others appear to hold Ryder as a genius himself "the best poet since Yates" according to Anthony Wilson.
Opinions, eh?

If you haven't seen the film yet get the DVD and watch the Tony Wilson narration Or the Hooky, Miranda Sawyer and co sat in a bar narration (great idea - you don't see the film you just see a load of people drinking watching the film going totally off the point - Miranda tries desperately to keep them on track but fails !) :D
I think film was shit considering the director - totally disjointed and cartoon like. Didn't enjoy it at all.

And if that's an insinuation that I'm shallow minded or emotionally incompetent, you're entering a world of pain, Mister.
And Ian Curtis could never be seen as a threat, he was far too concerned with himself to have done anything.

TremblingStar

1) It's "crucify some brother today"
2) Yates only half-rhymes with Keates at best.
It should be Tony Wilson, not me you should be having a go at. Geez, I never thought I'd be defending Ryder - I dislike the man myself, and doubt he's a genius, but you can take any lyric out of context and make someone sound silly.
Curtis wouldn't let his wife do anything - practically locking her away while going out and doing everything he was worried she'd do if she could.
There's also his staunch rightism that made him an arse. Plus there are quite a few sources that suggest he was even a fascist, the name of his band being a good example (but I don't know how much I buy that particular argument)
There's no denying that Curtis had talent: whether he was a genius (an entirely subjective term, hence just as applicable to Shaun Ryder as Ian Curtis) is arguable. But I would argue that the case for has been helped immeasurably by the sort of death-cult we see spring up when such people die in such circumstances.

His choice (arguably - nobody will know how ill he was).
But do you not think that the veneration of Ian Curtis as a 'genius' is something as an affront to the other members of Joy Division who co-wrote those songs and went on to becomming a better (IMO) band without Curtis. None of the other members are hailed in any equal sort of esteem - Hooky is a legend but I don't know how many would bestow the term 'genius' upon him, and defintitly not the others; while I would argue that the only real difference between Curtis and the other members of that band is that the former topped himself.
I'm actually listening to 'Hidden Pleasures' now, to give my argument some reference - and I think I would term Curtis a genius lyrics-wise; but this band would not have been noticed had the music not been equally as good, but it appears that all of Joy Division's 'geniusness' is often credited to Curtis.
It's because of the whole 'death-cult' thing, and the circumstances of Curtis's death are attractive to a lot of people (of a certain type), which I think has created a distorted over-Romantic view of somebody who probably gets too much of his undesirable character traits excused by ideas of him being a 'tortured genius' and his mental illness.
Not that he wasn't tortured by his mental state - he did kill himself because of it in the end, but I'm basing my argument on instances when he was no way near as bad as he got, and the fact that 'rock star' deaths can sometimes make things seem not exactly as they were.
I watched "Whose life is it anyway"

yeah, his flicks are usually pretty out there. LOVE welcome to the dollhouse and happiness. storytelling didn't really do much for me. i'm excited to see palindromes. the name is so great, such a great word. he lives in my friend's appartment building in nyc and i've met him coming and going and he's kind of a whacko. somewhat socially maladroit and weird. anyway, the last movie i watched was "gypsy '83". saw it last night and it was really cool. an indie flick about this goth-stevie nicks wannabe chick and her gay best friend who live in some shitty small town where everyone treats them like shit and they run away to new york city to make their dreams come true. the soundtrack is killer, lots of the cure and the delicious karen black has a bit part in the movie as a failed lounge singer-slash-karaoke hostess. really camp and cool. anyway, check it out if you haven't already.

i actually went to see this and thought for sure i'd hate it, mostly because tom cruise is hideous and gives me hives, but i was really surprised by how good it was. the ending was a bit anticlimactic, but it was still pretty good. i was also really surprised by how heavy it was. i was expecting it to have some humor and be a bit blockbuster-ish, but it was dark and heavy and like you said, totally relentless, it starts off pretty quick and once it going, it does not slow down or give you a chance to breathe. tom cruise was surprisingly not hideous, but dakota fanning drove me nuts with her endless screaming and general bratty antics. but overall, i really liked the movie.

The last film i watched was a guilty pleasure: Vamp, a 1986 'frightening comedy' about three college dudes who try and get a stripper for their frat house only to found out that she's a vampire. Trash, but I love it, it looks great, it's funny and Grace Jones plays the vampire. She's not in the film enough, but she's fantastic in it.
Also watched Casino: what a belter. I'm pleased opinions are changing towards this film, some going as far to suggest that it's better than GoodFellas. I always liked it more.
Recent films:
Fantastic Four: Absolute trash, good fun.
The War of the Worlds: Very effective as a pure horror, bit lacking in substance though and wow did the ending suck and blow!
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: Wonderful, just wonderful! Burton on absolute top form.
The Wedding Crashers: Ooo, about two funny bits. The rest was pretty dismal.
Batman Begins: Excellent, a real return to form for the Caped one.
Will be avoiding the military porn of Stealth like the plague, though The Island looks quite good. On the downside, it's a Michael Bay film, but i might give it a chance.
White Noise, very disapointing:p

Real 80's TRASH!!!
Fright Night 2: totally lacks the charm of the original (which is one of my all time fave films), but it's rather fun!
Blue Jean Cop: this seems to be on all the time when i was a kid, it's one of those Saturday night/ITV/action/buddy buddy films, lifted above the average by the sheer preposterousness of the action scenes, a pretty good script and two unsung 80's heroes: Peter Weller and Sam Elliott, the former being Robocop and the latter being the ultimate grizzled, slightly older, unshaven, take no shit good guy of the eighties.
Also nearly finished watching Wall Street, starring Mr. 80's: Michael Douglas.
Oh I watched a Japanese movie called "The Taste of Tea".
Anyone has heard of this one ?
I think it was really good. Some great scenes, nice photography...

Kung Fu Hustle for the umpteenth time. And I walked in the door to my roommates watching Dracula 2000... perhaps the worst movie ever made by a human.
I had to watch a Buffy episode to burn the crap that was Dracula 2000 out of my brain.

Well it's about an odd Japanese family.
The mother draws manga, the daughter is trying to figure out a way of getting rid off her giant imaginary self, we follow the son as he is getting his first love story....
Funny and poetic... Some incredible images

I watched "Being John Malcovich" again the other night and I forgot what a great film it is. I love the opening puppet shots - such a strong opening to the film - it's such a twisted freaky movie - love it! And to top it all I completely forgot that Bjork sings a track on it "Amphibian" and I also forgot what an amazing track it is!!! Is this available anywhere else apart from the soundtrack does anyone know??

I watched Gattaca too for the umpteenth time - great film. I love the almost retro-futuristic look to it, and I think it has one of Jude Law's best performances in it.
Before that I watched Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown on DVD - very funny.
The last film I saw was Red Eye. I was looking forward to seeing it and I have to say I wasnt dissapointed.

Quills, at my friend Rebecca's insistance. Nice and witty and naughty in all the right places; but a bit mean spirited in the end.
Phil Kaufman did The Right Stuff, which is one of my fave flicks.

Just watching Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo and Juliet". So love this film.
The perfect compliment to the film is that you forget within about 15mins that it's a Shakepeare story told in full Shakspearean English.

Seems both the now and then of the film got things pretty darn right.
