Saw District 9, didn't care for it. You know you're not getting into a film when during the action/gun fights you're going "oh just kill him already and let's be done with it".

Manged to see Avatar, at long last.

Well worth the wait - a stunning visual spectacle in 3D. A run-of-the-mill story and predictable characterisation and dialogue, but it's well paced and never drags.

A few good things coming up too - "The Road", "Up in the Air" in particular. I may even check out the Ian Dury biopic, too.

I see that there's a film opening later this month called "Burlesque Undressed". It features Immodestly Blaize, star of the "Train" video, so could be worth checking out!

Domino.

One the worst best, most brilliantly terrible, genius disasters I've ever seen. 473 seperate unrelated shots, sequenced together using dice throws and finalised on devices with wonky colour settings. It goes out of "so bad it's good" and back into bad so many times that the gauge spins like a Catherine wheel.

Walken? Springer? Waits?!

Say what!? :p:D

Avatar.
Very stunning in visuals and a good experience to watch in 3D. The downside was the absolute dire script and piss poor acting or over acting in some cases.
The next Shrek film coming out looks more my sort of film.

I thought it was AWWWFUUUUL. I love horror and was hoping for something good. My hopes were soon dashed. Good for a laugh though.

Spirited away was the last film I watched. One of my favourite things in the whole world ever. It's one of those films that turn something so simple into something so exciting, amazing, magical and beautiful. I wanna watch some anime again now :)

In a word........bleak!

But compelling and visually, it's stunning (in a grim way). I'm told that there's some differences from the book (and perhaps less horrifying).

As a portrait of a post-apocalyptic world, I suspect it's all too realistic.

No Distance Left to Run - a film about Blur.

A decent documentary that meshes some film about their comeback tour with interviews, reflections about their career and old film clips, some unseen before. Lots of focus on the sometimes fractured relationships in the band. It'll be out on DVD in a couple of weeks time.

Some funny moments too. One of the best is when Alex is recording a series of idents for Japanese radio shows. For one of them he says: "Hi, I'm Alex ...the stupid one from Blur........Stop eating whales, you cunts" :)

'Angel-A', a B&W Luc Besson film set in Paris about an angel named Angela (oh gawd) sent to Earth to help a loser love himself. George Clooney plays a lone-wolf executive who flies around the USA doing the dirty work for businesses getting rid of some of their staff. He finds his contented state threatened by a smart, young college graduate.

Precious

A grim tale about an illiterate, teenage single mother. Usually, this theme is the staple fare of certain British directors, but this is an American film this time - directed by Lee Daniels.

It's a compelling story with fine performances, including a barely recognisable Mariah Carey. Some of the editing and directing seemed a bit clumsy, but it didn't detract too much.

Blade Runner, on a 37'' 1080p screen, synced using 24p Real Cinema from the 'final cut' Blu-ray. For sound I pushed the TrueHD audio down through my Sennheiser headphones. BR had to be my first film watched.

It's probably getting on for my 30th watching but what all the geek gubbins above means is that I've never seen it to any level like that, possibly even the cinema in some respects. Shots like the opening city & Tyrell building pan are just extraordinary and really busy scenes like J.F.'s toy-filled flat just leap of the screen.

Looks amazing with far more detail than you realise - things like the smoke of the Ukranian Haunting Spell look almost touchable - and the Bride is still the best looking out of the two choices he has (even though she's slightly dead :p)

Currently on the song with the Bride, the black widow spider and the maggot that lives in the Bride's eye socket. Genius.

Just finished watching it - wow!

For a film past it's 30th birthday it looks amazing. Reds & blues are especially vivid, there's little noise or fluff left on the print and you can almost see the different lenses used in some of the shots based on the way the light seems or slight colour halos. Amazing stuff, right back to how it was originally. The uncompressed audio is stonking too, really firing both the Carlos and classical scores.

Well worth £8 (who said blu-rays are dear!) and I've got a pile of docs & tv shows to watch on it yet.

I don't mind the length as it feels like three sections (ultraviolence / experiment / consequences) and that helps propel it along. Just works for what it was.

I do think I prefer Kubrick's over-held shots and long, long, slow pans from things like The Shining or 2001 to the more hyper nature of this but I still like the film as a whole.

online prices vary a bit as shown in that link, it's still the cheapest way to get Blu Rays though

but go into your local HMV and you'll be hit with £25 for St Trinians, "wha?????? wasn't that their budget for the entire film?" (never seen it by the way...never want to either, it just made me laugh that someone out there will pay that much for it...plus the same exact package Missions Impossible 1, 2, and 3 in store is £60 while online at play it's a much more reasonable £14.99

best time to get Blu Rays in store, is when there is a special offer on, or a sale on. of course sometimes you can stumble across a bargain...it just rarely happens.

nice choice of film there by the way...haven't seen that in a long long time.

I think it's a bit removed from likes and dislikes. It's always struck me as an intensely personal thing - it puts you in a very judgmental position almost from the off.... almost makes you un-think.... like the last hour of an acid trip. It's almost not a film at all.

I know what you mean - it's got a narrative arc and all that in the normal way, in some respects a very rigid and unexciting one of "man does wrong, the powers that be try to fix things and it backfires", but somehow that seems less important than the whole overall thought of what lengths society should go to in order to suppress anti-social behaviour. That's certainly what it leaves with me, anyhoo.

That and the nadsat. Never realised it was nearly all based on Russian!

The fifth Bring It On film Fight to the Finish. The first and third films in the series are good, the second and fourth somewhat meh. The fifth one is not at all bad, although some of the dialogue is incomprehensible, as far as I'm concerned. I remember hearing that alternate Star Trek films are good (but can't remember whether it's the odd or even numbered ones). Something similar seems to be going on with the Bring It On films -- with the odd numbered ones the movies to watch.

It was the first time I've watch a film on blu-ray without seeing it on any other format first and it's surprisingly engrossing - the scene in long slow fly-over where you see the main body of the attack taking place has an almost ridiculous level of detail in it.

err, well i found it entertaining i guess. i just didnt find it that magical. i think it was the whole bombardment of CGI, nothing looked real? which i know its not supposed to, but i think it would have looked better if the film ie sets/characters were actually physically made, and then manipulated digitally afterwards.

Lilly Cole would have made a better Alice...

EDIT - i kinda got the feeling that seeing as The House of Mouse were promoting the film, they had the final say as to what Burton was expected to deliver...

It came nowhere close to Eternal Sunshine though. Gondry is an amazing director but he definitely needs someone else to write a script. The story wasn't great and it got very muddled near the end. But the film does look great. And it had Gael Garcia Bernal in it so you're kinda distracted away from the fact that it makes no sense. :p

I'm going to see Alice in Wonderland tonight after Swedish class.
I have very high hopes for this one.

Nowhere Boy

Really good. I suppose I should be wary as to how true-to-life the story was but it made for an engrossing and moving film.

Alison and Will have made a fine job of the music too. Understated and reflective of the emotional tone of particular scenes. It's very unobtrusive, as good scores should be, and does the job well.

Went a bit mad with the plastic the other week and decided to invest in the entire Studio Ghibli Collection!

As this was my week off me and the fella decided to have an anime fest! and we are currently at tales from Earthsea ... AWESOMENESS!

(Howl's Moving Castle is still my fave though!)

And they were -sadly- not really granted.

It looked all a bit too fake to me, and the I hate how 3D is being used today under the pretences of 'creating a whole new experience', but in this case it didn't really contribute.

And that Alice lady looked FREAKISHLY pale!

That's not going mad, that's more like going sensible!

For me it's got to be "Spirited Away" (NoFace rocks!) or "My Neighbour Totoro" (yayyyyy for CatBus!!!) though many of the others are ridiculously good too. I was surprised how funny/touching "My Neighbours The Yamadas" was, especially with the great Belushi voice work. I'm just missing "Whisper Of The Heart" and "Only Yesterday" to complete my set.

Have you seen what's coming out in July - "The Borrower Arrietty", a version of The Borrowers set in Tokyo in 2010 !!!!

And that Alice lady looked FREAKISHLY pale! ah, well that i got. its a burton film. you have to look like your on the verge of death if your from "the real world" :p i was more distracted by her ability to not act...

I like pale - where some actresses/models are concerned I view it as a positive advantage :D

I'd happily extend that to freakishly pale as well :o:p

freakishly pale is apparently a big thing on catwalks right now... odd, so we have deathly thin, to deathly pale...

... why dont they just glue a load of skeletons to a conveyor-belt? gawd, that would look awesome!

I'm so glad someone else (especially someone young) hates CGI. It's permeating everything now, and it looks stupid. I was, however, expecting the "Alice" film to seem very dreamlike, which should theoretically have lent itself well to CGI, and yet it would seem it has not.

It's getting to the stage where the visual effects they had in the 1980s are more striking than the ones they have now.

And so many actors hate it too. They'd never say so in interviews, with Pixar picking up the tabs, but it's turning their careers into just another job. There seems to be a school of thought that says an actor working in green screen works twice as hard, but who wants to work hard for a living? And where's the social and psychological interaction that actors thrive upon when they work with actual human beings? It must make it a lot harder for them to perform that leap of faith that all artists, actors and musicians must make for them to create something.

It's all leading towards getting rid of actors completely, and just having their voices. Maybe even that will go in the end..... Troilus and Cressida performed by two Macs. Actually I just copyrighted that idea, it's starting at the Manchester Halle next year so beware, I am Jesus and my lawyers are the twelve disciples, nick my idea and feel my subpoena.

We were talking about that (and Breakfast Club) at work this morning! It's got a fantastic soundtrack and you have to be truly hard-hearted to not be gutted for Duckie when he's alone on the steps.

I've also recently watched The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles. In spite of its soundtrack, and some of its moments, I enjoyed Pretty in Pink less than the other two.
