Yes, that was suitably "watch through fingers" in many, many scenes.
75% Korean horror, 10% Hammer, 10% Giallo and remaining 5% was a scene in a basement garage with an old woman who looked like she'd stumbled out of a Fever Ray video. Pretty darn good all told.
Moon is one of the ones on my list to see - good to hear yet another good report on it. Bodes well indeed.
Mansell's "Requiem For A Dream" score is so iconic that I'm still hearing things on TV & film lift part of it even now. Only issue I have with it is the film fucks me up so badly when I watch it that even the music gets to me. Still genius though.
The music for it has become quite popular and overused. It's good to see him getting such recognition though, his score for Smokin' Aces was incredible too

Brilliant movie. I think I saw it when it came in the cinemaaa :D
I learnt so much from it. Werewolfes are fake Were-Rabbit's are the best!
Thirst
A Korean horror film directed by Park Chan-wook (responsible for Oldboy, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance etc).
It's based on the Zola novel "Therese Raquin" which is essentially a domestic tale of adultery, murder, self-destruction and tragedy.....but with added vampires!
It's an uneven film but compelling and moving, in the end. And it gives some fresh twists on vampire mythology and some brilliant images.

Just saw 'Where the Wild Things Are'. Not sure about this one, it was one of my beloved childhood books and now Spike Jonze & co turned it into a movie. It was beautifully filmed, but not sure how you can turn a 40 page childs book into an extended movie. I dunno, I'm still on the fence....

Woooow. Was I the only one who really thought it was boring? It was a pretty generic tale and it was so rushed through I found there was barely any time to even get attached to the characters or feel emotion for them.
It certainly set up the rest of the film, yeah, but that particular scene did nothing for me.

finally got to see Telstar
and it was better than I dared hope for ..truly evocative of the time .. which I remember quite well but then aren't memories holographic ? once you get one evoked it's possible to creep right around in there like Deckard and his Esper .. except it's better than that because there are the smells and tastes and the whole sense that life is what activates all this ... and I remember going to the local record store and having my mum buy me these records that Joe Meek made and I was captivated by their sound which wasn't like anything anyone else was doing .. I had no knowledge of the groups and producers I just went for the sound and it was more often than not it was Joe Meek
the man wrote his sense of self into the stuff I am made of ... and this is the way awareness works this is the mechanism of personality enduring after death you hitch it someone elses memories or even better build yourself into someones elses bedrock sense of identity ... yeah ...
so yeah this was a cool film for me ...

(500) Days Of Summer
- it's a romcom, but not at all in an insulting way
- almost every scene has an original twist to it, which I loved
- the leading actors are fresh and sparkly and win you over in a second
- basically all the characters are very likeable and, most importantly, "real" - even when they rip out, cook and eat someone else's heart
- IKEAAAAA !!!!!
- it's got a wonderful soundtrack going for itself
I could go on, cause (500) Days Of Summer is some really good stuff. But. Yes, a but. But: why do I still feel like something little I can't really put my finger on was missing? Hmmm.

yeah, was enjoyable. awfully short film tho. it was a bit pants it didnt go on longer, but i guess it just achieved what it wanted to achieve in under 2hrs.

It had a lot of 'Eternal Sunshine..' potential, but I agree, there was a little something off about it.
I know! It had a same-ish plot (it already went wrong when the film starts etc.), the same quirkiness and inventiveness, the same charm, yet somewhere along the - still highly enjoyable - way something didn't compute the same 100% like the rest did.
Oh dear, I hope I don't sound too negative? :o Because I would still totally give it a 8,5/10, also known as very good. Because I still very much enjoyed it and stuff. I mean: the dance routine/split-screen sequence/IKEA-scene were all pure gold, for example. :) Yeh.

An Education
A terrific little film, this. Set in a London suburb in 1961, it tells the story of teenage girl (Carey Mulligan) aiming for a place at Oxford University, whose life is changed when she meets an older man (Peter Sarsgaard) and is based on a true story.
The script, by Nick Hornby, is crisp and economical and it's tautly directed by the Danish director Lone Scherfig. All told, a compelling and moving film.
Nice to see Beth Rowley as the nightclub singer, too. Hopefully, her new album will be with us early in the new year.

Awesome movie, one of the best story-driven science fictions I've seen for some time.

And to top it all off Clint Mansel did the soundtrack. 'nuff said ;)
The soundtrack is incredible for that movie, Mansell really does a lot of great scores.

'De Storm' about that water problem in NL 1953 (part of NL was just water after that storm)
It submerged quite a bit of Essex too (where I was living at the time). Our house was on reasonably high ground, but not so far away were houses with only their roofs above water. I remember seeing pictures of it on the front page of the newspaper, and feeling shocked that it was happening so near to home.
Twilight - New Moon
I can see at least one good reason to see it - this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4bPQG5UbRE).
Cold Souls.
Paul Giamatti seeks to solve his angst by visiting a corporation who specialise in removing, storing and even transplanting souls! His problems only increase when he gets caught up with some soul traffickers!!
Sounds like a Spike Jonze/Charlie Kauffman conceit doesn't it? Actually, it's from a new writer/director - Sophie Barthes. And it's well worth seeing. It probably doesn't make the most of all the ideas it throws up but is often very funny and always intriguing.
Tulpan
A story about a young man leaving the navy and trying to set up a new life as a farmer on the steppes of Khazakstan, whilst pursuing the only single female for hundreds of miles... the enigmatic Tulpan.
A lovely little film. Funny and beguiling, with some stunning images. Plus a character who's obsessed by porn pics and Boney M!! If you only see one film from Khazakstan this year, make it this one:)

Yes he's a lovely character ... it's very touching when Alex leaves in essence a lot of the film seems to be about his leaving. and the way his 'freedom' is often predecated at the expense of others that become attached to him ..

"Law Abiding Citizen". Please don't get sucked into the hype and/or the fact that Gerard Butler is the best looking man in the universe - it's boring, every character is completely unlikeable and you'll be SO pissed off with the twist at the end, it's the only thing that could have saved the film from itself and it actually makes it worse.

Is it not good ?
No, the thing is that Tove Jansson was a Finnish Swede so many think that all the songs used in the original movie should be either in Finnish or in Swedish. The Comet Song is apparently written in English so there's a little war going on between the fans and the producers.

Yes, saw it yesterday. And no...it doesn't.
It's not bad - good set up (the claustrophic atmosphere in the house)OK characterisation and an increasing sense of unease, with some genuine chills.
The comparisons with the "Blair Witch Project" are well founded but there are enough differences to make it worth seeing, if you like that kind of thing (and I do).

I really disliked the "Blair Witch" thing. It was such a good idea, too. I know this sounds so prudish but there's such an avalanche of bad language in the first half-hour (it's like every other word) I just thought "Well, they've clearly got nothing to say, little rich kids using swear words to give themselves some sort of edge" and after that - forgettable. If they hadn't spent the first half hour making me hate the three main characters I might have cared a bit.

On The Beach (1959)
Heck of a cast list (Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire & Anthony Perkins!) and a cracking story. For all that it's dated - which is fair enough given its age - and how they sometimes really hammer points home a bit too much, it's still a real treat with some scenes ridiculously powerful and almost shocking in how straight they're delivered.

I thought it was awful. Really boring... Somewhere in the top three most tedious films for which I've remained for their entirety. (I think I'd gone to see it with someone else, and I stayed for the sake of my companion... also I kinda expected it to get better, but it didn't.)

Just saw it this afternoon with my son , as Carpy says " It's as good as I hoped and some more too" , it had the universal themes of betrayal / redemption , the level of detail and love that went into it are staggering , I feel a warm glow in me from it .

don't you just wish gollum would silence the irritating Sam in a gruesom way!
Hmm I was silently hoping for Frofro to fall in lava..
Resident Evil. It was a waste of time.
Whip It
Liked it. Had a fun time watching it.
Some cliché stuff but that didn't bother me at all.
Apparently it's become quite hip to dislike Ellen Page all of a sudden (reading some of the comments this movie got)
Not me though. I loved her (again) in this one.
Great supporting cast too.
Kudos to Drew Barrymore for her first directing job.
And how nice it was to see Juliette Lewis acting again.

The Corpse Bride
Never seen it before so just gave it a go.
1) Really enjoyed it - some have said it's not on a par with his others but I thought it was easily as much fun AND with a good little story. Soooo many dead jokes too :D
2) Was I then only one to think that dead Emily was way more gorgeous than living Victoria? :o:D

To the Devil a Daughter.
I wondered whether it would make more sense than it did the last time I watched it. No surprise that it didn't -- but I didn't expect it to make less sense. Anyway, that leaves me with only one film left in my project to watch 49 Hammer films in chronological order.

Great movie though I had seen it a few times already.

Sherlock Holmes - Really enjoyed it. Not a traditional Holmes by any means, but good fun. Robert Downey Jnr's is as always charismatic, and Jude Law looks surprisingly hot with a moustache! Liked all the CGI'd shots of Victorian London too.

I'm obsessed with Sherlock Holmes to the verge of total, lunatic psychosis, so I will end up watching this sooner or later. It certainly isn't a traditional Holmes, but I think it's a more correct version - I approve of the boxing, and the mad psychedelic filth of Victorian London. Other versions are too neat!
Just watched Avatar, as an animation nerd and a film lover. I really enjoyed it.
Thought more could have been done with the score however

last film I actually watched was "Audrey Rose" a 1970's paranormal thriller about reincarnation featuring Anthony Hopkins, thought it was surprisingly clever and well made film, some interesting points are made about western culture's reluctance and phobias towards orientalist and eastern philosophies, as relevant today as ever. Am hoping to go see nine in the next few days I'm a bit doubtful when it come to musicals, :) ,

Where the wild things are.
I loved this film - really made me think what it was like to be a child again. Funny, witty odd with a rather excellent score from Karen O - which actually sounds very Goldfrapp indeed.
Would heartily recommend.

Quantum of Solace.
Many good action scenes, but the plot was too well hidden for my old brain. I think I may have to watch it a couple more times to appreciate it more.

The Lady Vanishes -- 1979 Hammer remake. Not as awful as I thought. It completes my watching 49 Hammer films in chronological order. What will I watch next?
