I can change...:)
You watched Magnolia and The Virgin Suicides...Damn, your taste in films (and women) is good. Now if only you had equally stunning taste in music...do you by any chance like the band Goldfrapp? :D
I just been to star city to watch hero .. I've never seen a subtitled or kunfu movie at the cinema before .. I thought it was really good actually.
I should never become a critic.

I just saw Eddie Izzard's Dress To Kill; mighty funny. Had the hardest time getting to watch it, though. Rebecca was dead set on having me and her friend Tom watch it, but my TV is so old that it has no connection for a DVD player. So she goes to Wal-Mart and buys a TV set. So we watch, and laugh. A lot.
I think the last film I sat through was Carry On Up The Jungle on my wonky video!
Last movies at the cinema were Hero (v.good) & Open Water (BORING!)

Well my dearest Meggie...
Every Halloween I usually dress up in....well, it started out as kind of drag/Rocky Horror, but over the last 3 years I've gotten really good at it. It's less drag now and I tend to look a damn fine woman, even though it takes 2 hours on my legs alone
And finding size 11 high heels is a nightmare, I can tell you...it's discriminatory against us larger-footed ladies...
Anyway, being perfectly honest...I'd probably look most like Catherine Zeta-Jones (when she used to look more tanned and less orange).

In my secret identity/female guise I'm quite sexy, but in my male guise I just look like the No.1 henchman to some world-domination seeking James Bond villain.
I'll try and find a photo where I'm not too sinister/fat...
Last night I watched Infernal Affairs (again), which is a brilliant, brilliant twisty and turny Hong Kong thriller. It stars Tony Leung Chiu-Wai (Broken Sword from Hero) and it is quite frankly amazing, and unfortunately it's also up for a Hollywood remake next year with Brad Pitt (yay!) and Leonardo DiCaprio (shudder).

Collateral
Starts off brilliantly, the first hour is in the top 5 thrillers of all time...but then the second half dies a death. Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx and Mark Ruffalo are brilliant and the film looks fantastic, but the script in the final third just lets it down.
7/10 - a missed opportunity

I remember enjoying that film very much so. Only thing is I can't remember much about it, except for the opening scene and people scurrying about in sewers.

Well...
It's set in a post-apocalyptic world where there's no meat. The world is full of cannibals and the only safe places are the small towns. One day a professional clown and repair man arrives having lost his fellow clown to cannibals and asks to become town handyman, which they accept. The problem is they tend to go through handymen quite quickly...
When in danger he is forced to rely on just two sources of help: 1) his short-sighted cello playing girlfriend
2) a notorious group of vegetarian freedom fighters
Film is exceptionally beautifully made and it is very funny. 8 1/2 out of ten. Go watch. NOW!!!
:)
I watched Superfly last night, the plot is a bit patched and the acting's a bit dummy-like, but the soundtrack is one of the best EVER, so I won't complain!
U sold Delicatessan to me ROO!

The Life and Death of Peter Sellers
Very good I thought. Geoffrey Rush was very believable as Peter Sellers and I learned a lot about how his mind worked. Not to mention getting swept away on a 60s vibe with the music and clothes.

Just come back from seeing Bride And Prejudice.
7/10
Good, recommendable film. Aishwarya Rai is stunning, the dancing is pretty damn good, the story we all know pretty well and the colour...the colours...
Unfortunately...the songs are fairly forgettable (which surprised me) and the male lead Martin Henderson is a nice enough pretty boy, but rather than smouldering (ala Colin Firth or myself, for example :D ) he's just plain dull. Maybe I'm wrong there, men and women of the board please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but god knows why they chose him...his only previous films I can think of are the diabolically bad Torque, and the remake of The Ring.
But maybe I'm being too negative. It is a good film, its just let down by some bland songs and a crap male lead.

Something on BBC2 on friday (I think) called a room for Romeo .. somebody (forgot the last name used). Did anyone else watch it, rather good, a bit slow but lots of fodder to keep u going, though it did make me cringe, the langugae use just seemed really dorky, but it was realistic enough. Did anyone else see it.
Also saw death wish 2 last night, he does kick some ass in it though, vengefull little bastard.
Shark Tale
It's NOT Finding Nemo and never will be. Not as clever and not half as funny.

I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind yesterday, I was blubbering away like nobodies business by the end, half way through I was getting emotional because I wished so bad that I could just blank memories of past relationships the way this movie gave the characters an opertunity to do so, but then as all the good memories creep up on you, you start realising that you done certain things for a reason and I guess that those are the things that make you who you are, blah, I'm blabbing, very good film though.

A Room For Romeo Brass, hmm...not bad. Death Wish 2 though? Moo...Mooo...Moooo! What were you thinking? *Shakes head in disbelief* And how did they end up making 6 of them? Urgh...
I mean, how many times can one man have his wife/wives, daughter, housemaid, shoeshine boy, occasional window cleaner viciously killed, maimed, assaulted, raped, have someone jump in front of them in the queue at Tesco's? And Michael Winner? Who allowed him to make these films? Any films? Argh! It amkes me so angry.

Roland Emmerich. He also made The Patriot *shudder* which said all British are evil, yet failing to mention that Mel Gibsons character only entered the war for money and used to frequently rape his house maids and slaves :(

Apparently it's set in real time (the hour before he has to catch his plane) and a lot was ad libbed by the the two leads, as their lives have strangely mirrored their characters ...althought i'd love to know if that meant they fancied each other in real life!!;)

Good points...Pierce Brosnan is still the best Bond...good gritty first hour...Michael Madsen...Kenneth Tsang (Hong Kong idol of mine :))
Bad points...Madonna cameo...Halle Berry...constant over-use of slo-mo effects...ridiculous overblown final hour and a half...really reall bad CGI...the bad guys are just laughable...constant referencing of every other Bond film (why? it just highlights how bad this one is)...dodgy soundtrack...laughable gadgets...and worst Bond song EVER!

28-10-2004, 17:02
Worst James Bond ever! Although Rosmound was quite good (way more convincing than Halle! - there are so mant other sexy but hard female leads that could have done it!).
But my big problem was they have made James Bond a more edgy and much more believable character over the past few years. But they have also made the stunts ridiculously unbelievable and silly. The gap is so big it doesn't work anymore for me. The first few Broson movies were really promising (harder character) but you have to put him in a half believeable story.
Like so many films it has fallen foul to the 'action set piece' fans. i.e. work out the cool action bits - then hang a story off it!!!! I really hate it. I actually prefered XXX because it was taking the piss (while the action junkie thought it was great!)

Yeah, but the problem is is that althought he set pieces are BIG, they're just laughable. They're not even exciting, they're just laughable. At least hire a decent action director if you're going to go all out action.
Still, doesn't matter...the whole film was poo in the end anyway.

I usually steer clear of blockbusters or anything that's been really really hyped. I wouldn't really call Fight Club a blockbuster though, seeing as it's an 18 and it is directed by David Fincher. I only watched it recently too, as I really liked the book. And yes, I think it does the book justice.

Okay, it's poo.
It's on tonight and I'm going to watch it for one reason. The raining monkeys scene. :D
---The Raining Monkeys Scene---
Towards the end of the film, there's a huge explosion and all these apes and chimps and monkeys go flying everywhere. The camera pans back and you see Tim Roths character having a go at some other simian type...in the background you can see all these monkeys falling from the sky :D
It was so funny when I saw it at the cinema, I hadn't laughed so hard for months, it very almost made seeing the film worthwhile, almost.

I watched a Canadian film called the Cube last weekend, chosen by my sister's fiancé...The film was really a bit of a head-trip (if that's a word...), about six people stuck in a giant construction of, well, cubes and trying to find their way out. This was possibly one of the most violent films I've seen and, of all things, oddly mathematical!

Finally saw 'Oldboy' last night. The twist was fantastic, and all the action very impressive and tastefully done. How is it that Eastern films are a million times more violent but do not come accross as gratuitous at all.
I'd reccomend it to everyone. A really brave film that is pulled off succesfully. Great acting too.

Damn! You beat me to it Trembly. I'm seeing it tonight, and am expecting great things.
European, Eastern and independent American films are always better than mainstream pap (that includes British pap as well as Hollywood pap by the way) because they just don't have the ridiculous budgets, so they actually come up with interesting ideas for film. Contrast this with the billion amounts of Hollywood remakes this year :(

Saw Touching The Void last night on TV.
Was he right to cut the rope? Of course he was, he would have died anyway and for all he new the other guy may already have been dead. Can't believe so many people have had a go at the guy for doing it.
Both the climbers we very honest and phylisophical about it. Hate the way other people use their moral standards from everyday life and apply it to something we could never understand. Intresting that the guy when he had nearly died said he didn't feel pray or anything , but he did say he began to feel he was blending into the mountain and the earth.

Too damn right he was. Like you said. People generally don't understand or listen to the story enough. They were on a cliff of ice and the weight of Simpson was dragging him down to the edge of the cliff. If he hadn't cut the rope, they would both have died.
The fact that Simpson survived such a fall with that many broken bones is a miracle, the fact that he crawled himself back to the camp is just beyond comprehension. And he has said many times since that in the same situation he would have cut the rope. What useful purpose would killing yourself serve?
By the way tatt, I saw the two of the them three years back at Bristol's Watershed Cinema. They were giving a really good lecture on mountaineering. Really good stuff.
Agreed, Touching the Void was a wonderful film. I was crying when he got back to camp and couldn't see or hear anyone. WAAAA! :(
Thank God they did hear him calling out or he'd have been a goner fer sure! And he's still climbing today!!!!! What a Hero!
Yeah, Touching the Void was a very good film. What's also good is that the climber who fell down the crevass still defends the other climber who cut the rope. :)
Unbelieveably, the new Star Wars trailer is released but is only available at first if you pay for it, then released for free in a few days.

Did you all see the reference to the fact, that after thinking about religion, life, family, the natural order of nature etc... just before he was about to die he got Boney M's - Brown Girl in the Ring stuck in his head and couldn't get rid of it. It wasn't even a song he liked, but obviously it had got stuck in there at some point in his life. Scary to think that was one of the last thinks to come out of his brain before he was about to die!! Shows the power of a catchy tune overides all reason eh!! Though it was very interesting.
Wonder if that's the same for all of us just before we die!!  Wonder what dreadful tune i will have!!! 'The Birdie song' probably!!

Very good, great atmosphere, great acting and rather good music. Don't get your hopes up about the Goldfrapp soundtrack though. There's one new piece of music and that's about it. The rest consisted of Lovely Head and an instrumental version of White Soft Rope. The new piece of music was lovely though, should make a good B-side.

Bridget Jones wasn't bad, but it kind of just seemed like it was rehashing the first one (which I'm informed I'm watching on C4 in 15 minutes :( ). And if you made Bridget a man, you'd just think "what a git", but for some reason we're supposed to love her for being bored by her happiness and sympathetic to her jealousy. Don't know if it's already been discussed but I went to see Alfie last week and loved it.
All the American reviews were good too - it was just the snobbish British reviewers who slagged it because it's a remake. To say it's pointless because there's a 60s film isn't a review if you ask me.

It is actually a good film. And I'm not saying that it's better or worse than the original, but it isn't quite as gritty or as hard-hitting as the Caine version. It's easier to watch, which is good or bad...depending on your viewpoint.

Classic Truffaut. Though curiously not part of my extensive DVD collection yet. I have it on VHS though, so it's almost forgiveable.
My youngest sister Nat watched 'El Mariachi' in Spanish lessons today, which was quite an odd choice. But it shows her teacher has a groovy taste in films.

I saw two films yesterday. One was The Last Starfighter, a jolly little SF adventure from the 80's, which provided much nostalgic enjoyment and works because it has a funny script and a great central premise.
The other was Joel Schumacher's film version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, which was so hideously bad it made me realise that it's actually the only shit film I've seen at the cinema this year. So far i'd been picky and choosy with the films I've paid to see and each time I'd either seen a good or a great film. Alas, good luck had to run out, and to be fair, i didn't pick last night's film. Typical of a Schumacher film, it looked fantastic, but that was it. Non-existent characterisation, songs that all sounded exactly the same (except the cheesy title song), absolutely zero suspense or excitement and dull, dull acting. Also, it went on forever! I like some of Schumacher's trashier films (Lost Boys, Flatliners, Phone Booth), but this, along with Batman and Robin is the worst thing he's ever made.
Also, on Sunday i watched Commando, which is one of the best bad films of all time. It's crap, but it's a million times better than Phantom of the Opera!

Secret shame ... I own batman and robin :o if its the one with Nicole Kidman with her dream catchers. I own it for the cod pieces alone, I must get me one of those.
Uncanny enough I caught a glimpse of commando, I think, if thats the one with arnie busting his muscles and shouting u bastard in a russian accent!! Bless him, the fool.

The one with Nicole Kidman is Batman Forever, which is only slightly less crap than Batman and Robin.
And yep, that sounds like Commando you were watching. The final fight between him and his old war buddy Bennett is a sequence of great amusement.
I've seen alot of films recently actually, we got sky movies back just for christmas ... 28 days later, which I love just for cillian murphy alone, hes a beaut. Ed wood, which I fooking love, its such a clever film, especially when they ask the man which dress is the best, the red or the green and he say hes colour blind, so the dark grey one :D which looked a nice shade of grey.
And the other films I saw elude me at the mo ... guess it will come to me later ...

I agree! I hated that film, it made me so sick and dissapointed I couldn't even finish it. For shame Mr. Scott...
The last film I saw was Seaside, a French film which isn't that bad but I was expecting a little more. I also saw The Trip, which many refer to as a "gay epic", and wow did it suck, the acting was dreadful and the storyline was horribly predictable. Oh, you so have to check out Yann Tiersen´s former works (and his latest LP "L´Absente") as well; to be precise, some of the tracks on the Amélie OST are featured in his earlier albums, but they nevertheless contain several other beautiful songs.
But you´re right, this soundtrack is so wonderful, the songs are thus energetic and enchanting and add that passion to the scenes in the movie, plus I adore Fréhel´s "Si tu n´étais pas là", haha.

Watched "The Wicker Man" last night on DVD.
Absolutely superb film which drowns you in a sense of paganistic impending doom.
You get a feeling that this must have been an influence on Alison, with the islanders wearing hare masks and various ritualistic costumes.
Watchable alone for the Siren Song scene with Britt Ekland.
Wouldn't Alison be great for that part ?
It is actually on ITV tonight at 11.00, so if you haven't seen it, give it a go.

I haven't heard that Jack.
Must try and hear it.
I first saw the film 20 odd years ago and never get bored of watching it.
Do you agree that Alison would be great for the innkeepers daughter role ? Or at least a role of some sort if it was remade.
JackedyJAck
31-12-2004, 17:03
Well there are plans for multiple remakes, I think it would certainly be cool for Alison to play the role, not sure how good her Scottish accent is, but hey, if they can dub Britt Eckland, they can dub Alison right?
Who else would you like to see? What about Lord Summerisle? I don't know that I can imagine anyone, but I would like someone new, not ol' Lee again...

Can't go wrong with that. I've watched it twice over Christmas so far. Earlier watched the classic Takeshi Kitano 'Sonatine'

Just watched 'Batman' again. It's a lot less actiony than I remembered.
It also reminded me how pissed off I was after watching the debacle that was 'Batman and Robin'
And you can't beat the bit where the Batplane goes up and is framed by the moon. Tim Burton is a genius.

I finally got around to watching The Incredibles last night and it was erm... incredible :D
Baraka
Phenomenal.
Difficult to describe, so I'll steal someone else's words:
Shots flip from solitary Monks to crowded streets from great temples to images of war firing a hundred and one thoughts in your mind that you never complete.
The film is not just about what you are seeing. It is also about how it is presented. Shots of monks will make you grab your backpack and head for Asia as soon as the film finishes....
Visual images include...
Tibetan monks, Orthodox Jews, Whirling Dervishes, a solar eclipse, Buddhist monks, African tribal rituals, Jerusalem's Wailing Wall, rain forests, Ayers Rock, Big Sur country, Hawaiian volcanoes, Brazilian slums, time-lapse footage of car and pedestrian traffic, post-Persian Gulf War shots of Kuwait's burning oil fields, burning-of-the-dead ceremonies on the Ganges, refuse dumps of Calcutta, Auschwitz, Egyptian Pyramids, Angkor Wat, Mount Everest, Tuol Sleng in Cambodia, Indonesian factory workers.

Go see!!! It is the best animated film I've seen in a long long time, and also the best film I'd seen in quite a while too. It's wasted on kids really.
Watched "Tanguy" which I´ve seen within my French course sometime ago. It is basically about some 28 years old philosophy and sinology professor who still lives at his parents´ home. Consequence is that they want to get rid off of him. Really funny.:)

La Strada, late last night. Kind of bizzarre seeing Richard Basehart (Admiral Nelson on Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea) in something so pivital in the history of film.
This morning I watched "The White Rose"; it was unfortunately rather not that worth seeing; but since it is one of the sparse adaptions of that subject, I guess, it was actually acceptable.
I think, they could have set the beginning more in the childhood of Sophie and Hans because both weren´t that anti-Nazi first. With the film´s portrayal, however, they didn´t really succeed to show that circumstance.
Anyway, I´d love to get some new screening though with, eh, maybe Bryce Howard as Sophie Scholl, haha. That´d be marvellous. Or Sprague Grayden:) .

Welcome to Collinwood. Was good enough but it didn't change my life.
It was so short though - about an hour and a quarter, considering there were massive holes in the plot it could have been longer.
Maybe that's why (the brilliant) William H. Macy gets so much work, he only does short films.
Jennifer Esposito was in it as well, which takes me over to the fit women thread....

I think it was 1990, but I'm not sure. It was broadcast in the States in 89, so I'm assuming we were one year behind. Apparently there are no plans at present to release the second series :( Which ticks me off!!!

Oh I really want to see that one, it sounds just my kind of funny (i.e. pretty idiotic, but in a good, South Park kind of way). I'm intrigued by the puppet sex scene, too, it sounds like the funniest thing ever.:D
Team America; very funny - and probably better anti-US government propaganda than Fahrenheit 9/11. There are also some great 'crap puppeteer' touches, and they really send up the Thunderbirds idea well.

Y'know, what with puppets that don't even have genitalia being so suggestive and all... ;)

Saw Catwoman earlier for a laugh...terrible terrible terrible...but hilariously funny.
Every five minutes you think to yourself "This just can't get any worse" and then Halle Berry gets her cat-like abilities from a belching tabby cat, and then Benjamin Bratt's cop appears to be the only police officer in the entire city (homicide, theft and child education all in one day!), and then she wears a costume made entirely of leather, 19 zips and a generously oiled cleavage...and then to top it all off...Sharon Stone is near indestructible because of super-face cream!!!
Seriously people, we're through the looking glass here...highly recommended in a perverse kind of way...
Weeell not a film
but I went to see King Lear tonight at the Adbury theatre....all 4 hours....4 long hours and a seemingly endless (15mins?) scene with thunder and lightning! apparently i looked like i was being electrocuted every time there was thunder/lightning cause i like jumped out of my seat....that was shit scary! i considered leaving after that in the interval BUT NO! i stayed...for eyed being gauged out, murder areeeghh!

It's cool to have a play in here once in a while.

From janebirkin.net
Jane Birkin has been selected for a role of Gertrude in "Hamlet" a production directed by Rupert Goold at the Royal Theatre Northampton - March/April 2005.

Trois Couleurs Rouge
Finally managed to watch the entire series since buying the DVD box set last year.
They truly are a magical set of films, but I think your order of preference is affected by how much you fancy each leading lady. My order (although I think Roo will disagree - I think he's a big Delpy fan ) is:
Irene Jacob (Red)
Juliette binoche (Blue)
Julie Delpy (White)
But I still love White, its probably the film where Kieslowski underrated sense of humour is most explicit.
Rickyroo
25-01-2005, 12:26
Damn right I'm a huge Julie Delpy fan! *wipes drool from lips*
But Irene Jacob is equally sublime, and you'd have to be blind to not even consider Juliette Binoche in the same league. To be honest, I don't think I can put them in any kind of order, it would just be too stressful and would mean far too many sleepless nights. :D
After all Trembly, it's not as though you or myself are going to kick either of them out now are we? Actually, seeing as you like Ms Jacob the most, you can have her and I'll take the lovely Ms Delpy and Ms Binoche
By the way, have you seen The Double Life Of Veronique, by any chance?
