Sweet Home Alabama was on tv and for some reason I got sucked into it, despite already knowing how it would end at about 10 minutes into the film (that late because my brain was working really slow).

Haha, you have to watch it in the right mindset..otherwise it might..go wrong :)
Basically, it's a ritual, where they're blending into a whale form (I'm bad at explaining something this abstract, Carpy might correct or add me), so it's kind of a ritual death, but at the same time it's also coming together as a whole, so it can be seen as infinite love aswell.
I saw Home last night..which is just too amazing for words.
Now, before you all judge me and categorize me in the 'boring girl who watchs nature documentaries on a Saturday night' file, here me out.
Not only does it have the most AMAZING visuals you have ever seen, it's also created with so much love for this little planet we're living on, with incredible respect for Mother Nature and all the things she gives us.
Okay, it might be a bit 'in your face' sometimes, but it's really worth it!
And there's more: you can all watch it online!
It's part of this big project you might have heard of, a couple of weeks back where it was both in theatres, on telly, in shops and on the web.
I seriously recommend this to anyone who loves this planet and all of her beautiful aspects.

Nope, no correction. I think that's clear and spot on, Lisa. Took me a few days to get my head straight after the first watch. Beautiful but very strong & visceral. You seen this yet, Corvina?
Ok, the lack of dialog, gallons of runny fat, fetished underwater knife play and loooong scenes may obscure things at times but love & the ultimate form of 'joining' another is where it's at.

Excellent film, just excellent. It had me sitting on the edge of my seat for more than two hours, waiting to see what would happen next. It's weird how you can only watch the situations deteriorate but not make any of them better.

Goes to show a few good scares don't make a good movie.
Amy Smart was the only one who delivered a decent performance but I guess she disappeared in one of the huge plotholes halfway.
Rudo y Cursi at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
A Mexican film about two poverty stricken, football-mad brothers who get the chance of fame and fortune. A boisterous, profane and fun movie - but the more serious aspects of the tale are lost in the overall tone of the film.
It was a premier screening though and we were truly blessed with the presence of the stars - Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna along with Alfonso Cuaron (who produced it) and his brother Carlos (who directed). No wonder there was a real buzz about the place.

I would've annoyed you even more by posting photos but all I got were pitch black interior shots or the back of people's heads in the outdoor red carpet shots.:(

Same here - I've only been to one proper premier AND it was for an Icelandic music doc...........
.................but the director was snow bound at an airport in Iceland and never made it ! :D:rolleyes:
The Edinburgh Film Festival has a few similar gala occasions every year. What's even better, though, is the accessibility of so many of the filmakers.
Last Thursday, I had a chat afterwards with Jonathan Auf der Heide, the Australian director of "Van Diemen's Land" and on Saturday, with Cary Jogi Fukunaga, the director of "Sin Nombre". They're new, first time directors but will undoubtedly be more well known in future. Cary was telling me that his next film will be a musical and he's got Owen from Arcade Fire involved. Win and Regine may have an input too.:)

The Crime of Padre Amaro
It was pretty boring for a movie with Gael Garcia Bernal as a star. I think because he played a priest and was barely naked at all!
Seriously, though, I didn't find it to be especially well filmed, and the overall plot (priest begins affair with sensual woman in small village) wasn't exactly fresh to me. That whole "forbidden love" thing needs a new angle (Twilight/vampire romances, I am STARING at you...)

Isn't it just? In that same vein the shopping scene with 'I want Candy' is great as well - both showcase the extreme decadence from that time, as if nobody was aware of the extreme poverty and just partied/gambled/spent away like there was no tomorrow. Ah, the last days of the ancien régime ... ;) (before the bloody guillotine madness at least)
(the added string intro to 'Hong Kong Garden' does wonders on cd as well)
The Hurt Locker.............the final film I'm seeing at this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival.
This is Katherine Bigelow's new film and focuses on a US bomb disposal team operating in Baghdad in 2004. Using little known actors (plus Ralph Fiennes playing a cameo role), it's an unsurpisingly tense and absorbing drama. It may not have anything new to say but it's well worth seeing when it goes on general release.

Agreed. Michael Redgrave and the ventriloquist's dummy is simply brilliant. But I think that my very favourite moment is during the room for one more inside segment. It's when he rises from the bed and walks to the window, casting that big shadow. There is such an air of dread to that moment. Of course, what he sees beyond the window can't live up to our sense of dread... but there is a moment, there, of almost heart-stopping tension.

Funny, intelligent, educating, captivating. A 'rites of passage' movie with many, many layers.

Just watched Tony Takitani, a Japanese film from 2004.
19724
Simultaneously hypnotically bleak & heartbreakingly beautiful, matched with a cracking Ryuichi Sakamoto score, this is a bit of a wispy beauty. It's really studied & still with a dry narration that quirkily has occasional lines spoken by the actor in question while on screen thus breaking the fourth wall. In a Hitchcock style, both lead actors play at least two lead roles each in the film.
If you have 75mins to spare and fancy something for head & heart then I'd recommend this.

Bits that I didnt miss when I first saw it as I knew the story , but on seeing them put in , it makes it more faithful to the story . Its mostly elongated dialogue , notably on Mars where Manhattan and Spectre have `a chat` that no longer looks disjointed and cut short .

Her name was Taqui Altounyan. She wrote two autobiographical books -- In Aleppo Once and Chimes from a Wooden Bell -- which are worth seeking out. I once looked for her birthplace (in Hampstead). The house is now a restaurant, and has no blue plaque... But she was the original of both John (of the Swallows) and Nancy (of the Amazons).

Also puts hand up... to being an S&A fan! Ahh... dick, roger, titty - fond memories. :) Loved all the boat stuff - sadly, haven't sailed since my teens.. must do it again some time soon! As well as the nautical stuff, I was hooked by the fantastically detailed maps (sad, i know!)
what you mean to say you live that close to the sea and don't have a little clinker built lug sail rigged dinghy? put a towing hitch on that Mini and get yourself a little boat :D it was the tents and the camp fires that got me too ... I still love all that stuff and yep I'll admitt to watching Mr Mears too ha ha ha

Mona Lisa Smile
It wasn't as torturous as critics have said and I sympathised with a few characters, but overall the movie felt more a succession of events - without any of them really sticking out. The sudden shift in change of some characters wasn't very credible either.
Anyways. I'm going to watch the new Harry Potter tonight - the Millennium Bridge scene look absolutely stunning, judging from the trailer.
I saw HarryPotter last night, it was so amazing, I spaffed in my pants 9 times.
Was a little annoyed at how much had been cut out compared to the book, but I still loved it. Especially Alan Rickman's droolworthy voice <3
Just watched May.
Quite good horror-movie from a couple of years back.

Alice Through the Looking Glass starring Kate Beckinsale.
I thought it was good. It stayed surprisingly true to the book (although not retaining its title which is Through the Looking Glass and what Alice found there.) The biggest departure from Lewis Carroll -- mummy going through the looking glass, and being a little girl on the far side worked very well, I thought. Odd that it restored the Wasp in the Wig episode that Carroll deleted, but omitted the Lion and the Unicorn which Carroll included. (Though there remained the plum pudding dish as a kind of meaningless ghost of the Lion and Unicorn episode.) But it was certainly one of the better Lewis Carroll adaptations I've seen.
Have you seen the picture of Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter) from Tim Burtons new Alice film ..... er blimey
^ that film is going to be am-az-ing, have you seen the rest of the characters? Plus, any film that contains Johnny Depp AND Alan Rickman is a massive plus for me, I almost cried with happiness in Sweeny Todd. Plus Helena B-Carter!

Amazing! They get better and better each time around - by the time the second movie on the last book is out they'll probably be perfect. Helena Bonham-Carter really is the creepiest and best witch I have ever seen - can someone say 'perfect casting'?
^ helena was 2nd choice for Bellatrix, the actress who plays Narcissa was originally cast as Bella but fell pregnant and had to drop out.
I didn't think Slughorn was that great, the 'oho' wasn't right! Its still a superb film though. Can you tell I'm an obsessive Potter fan?!

She was the only part I liked of Sweeny Todd. Well, and the special effects and dark humor. But I really did not like it. Kinda strange because it just comes across like it was made for gay men. I guess I'm just not a "normal" gay man. Or something.

The Character of Bellatrix in the book is a rather nasty piece of work. and well, im glad what happens happens lets just say that.
So, casting the marvellous Helena as her, im finding myself really loving the character far too much, especially when i hated the character in the book.
I just watched The Mist. Ive pretty much lost the will to live now. watched it purely because the reviews only talked about the ending and what an ending. Dear Lord, endings like this should be outlawed.

And Soon the Darkness
Lots of Avengers- connected people involved in this film. (Laurie Johnson, Brian Clemens, Albert Fennell, Robert Fuest... Also Terry Nation, although better known for Dr Who he was also involved with The Avengers.) Apart from the names, the film turns out to have little in common with The Avengers... But it does build up quite an atmosphere of menace.

If you do not know them already I'd like to recommend a couple of non-ghibli anime which are just as powerfull imho.

watching it last night I was struck by how relatively unimportant dialogue is .. curiously enough it is Hal who has the most to say..his is the most developed character in the film ... although of course Kubrick set it up that way .. first 20 minutes no dialogue .. last 20 minutes no dialogue ..and it moves so slowly and yet all the cues are there .. the breathing during the EVA's ... the sense that humans are out of their element.. totally reliant upon technology / tools and yet that technology fights back ... the film is littered with death and eating ... . you just have to use your eyes and ears...

Every movie (with her in it etc.) I love Cate Blanchett more. Flawless performance, yet again - same goes for Giovanni Ribisi. The movie has you sitting on the edge of your seat to see what happens next. Also: beautiful shots of Italy throughout, and a subtle yet effective soundtrack.
Scoop
Overall I liked the film, but I think it still could have been better than it actually was. Woody Allen totally stole the other cast members' thunder in every scene he was in (bar the one where Hugh Jackman was wearing that blue speedo, of course) by the way - although the fact that all the other characters sort of lacked personality must have had something to do with that, I guess.
'Ghost Town' Blu-ray on rent. Exactly as I imagined it to be up to 30 mins in - quite funny if you like Ricky Gervais doing Ricky Gervais which I don't mind. Also has Greg Kinnear who I dislike as an actor for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. It settles down and starts to go through the motions after the half hour mark so I switched it off a short while after. May or may not finish watching it over the next few days.

With studios always slapping backs and greasing palms to get low age ratings (and therefore bigger cinema/dvd takings) it was odd to see an 18 on the box....then you realise why in a lot of places. For a 'comic book' film it doesn't pull punches with the results of violence. There's some serious "Oooooooh...." moments throughout and the reason Rorschach is Rorschach is really very dark indeed.

Taken from one of my regular haunts, io9.com.
See how many films spring to mind when you read these. Bet it sums up a large percentage of what you've seen.....
When everybody gets excited for ultra-gear thrillers like GI Joe, we get nervous.
Techno-thrillers are brilliant when done right (think Casino Royale) but worse than awful when done wrong (think Firewall).
Here are 20 things filmmakers should avoid.
1. Do not lower any characters through the ceiling of a museum/government building/secret lair on a thin wire so that they can dangle alluringly over a glowing object that they are about to steal/appropriate/destroy.
2. Make sure your main character is none of the following: A former bad guy/good guy who has to come out of retirement for one last job; A regular person who has been misidentified as a seriously elite bad guy/good guy and is now on the run and somehow, improbably, able to evade trained trackers without any prior training themselves; A person with a giant gap in their memories who must figure out what caused the gap and what happened during it; A man who is ultra-competent who must save his annoyingly useless/weepy wife and/or snotty/rebellious teenage kid.
3. Do not include a geek talking about covert gadgets as comic relief.
4. Do not get lazy and turn your bad guys into "evil people who get their kicks out of torturing our hero." Bad guys in a thriller should always have an agenda. I don't care what it is: Overturning a political regime is great; so is world domination. Nothing is more boring or stupid than a bad guy who just wants to get his or her jollies. Save it for Saw 12, OK?
5. Your entire story should not revolve around a missing tape/USB drive/piece of footage/surveillance photograph. That is not a plot. It is a MacGuffin.
6. Women in your story should not exist solely to be looked at. Black people in your story should not exist solely to be killed. Asians should not have Asian accents unless they are actually from Asia (also they should not run dark little shops that sell mysterious items). Arabs should not be terrorists. White people should not be rich weirdos whose family members have turned up missing.
7. Do not suggest that the ancient, mystical manuscripts/objects in your tale actually have mystical power.
8. No character at any point should suggest that something that isn't a computer will be hacked. We will not be hacking the planet, the biosphere, the culture, outer space, the monster's genetic code, or anything other than AN ACTUAL COMPUTER. And when we do hack that computer? Please bother to ask your sysadmin for the names of a few real network tools instead of making stupid crap up.
9. When your main character discovers that he or she is under surveillance, do not illustrate this discovery with a freakout scene of ripping apart a hotel room/apartment/car searching for bugs. Any self-respecting dweller in the information age knows that the best way to avoid surveillance is to throw that freakin' cell phone away, don't surf the internet from your own computer, rip all OnStar crap out of your car, and stop using credit cards.
10. Showing your hero's face getting sweaty is not a way of ramping up the tension. Just stop it.
11. If your main character is hallucinating/going mad/getting paranoid/being drugged, do not indicate this by showing people's faces looming into the camera and having their voices get echoey. As a corollary, do not indicate that we have entered the realm of flashback by going black-and-white or giving us ultra-saturated color.
12. At no point in the story is your main character allowed to look in a mirror, check him or herself out, and make an admiring quip about how badass they are.
13. Speeches given before firing a gun should be no longer than the time it takes to pull out the gun and fire.
14. High tech items in the story should not all be disguised as innocuous objects. ("This scarf is actually a camera. This stuffed Garfield is actually a grenade.") Sometimes a gun or micro-surveillance device can look like itself.
15. Characters should not have cutsey or butch nicknames like Red or Titan. Everyone in a thriller goes by his or her last name except while having sex or using a pseudonym/codename. That's an unbreakable rule.
16. Car chases in the country cannot take place on precarious ridges next to a gorgeous ocean view. Car chases in the city cannot involve the top of a truck being chopped off in a low tunnel. Car chases in tunnels cannot include scraping against the walls so that sparks fly. In addition, there will be no moment where the bad guys bump their vehicle against the good guy's vehicle, especially if they have some kind of saw or jabby thing that's intended to cripple the good guy's car. You are permitted to drag your hero behind a car/train/bus on the gravel ONLY if he or she gets really scraped up horribly or there is a good excuse (like body armor) that scraping isn't an issue. Do not scrimp on the explosions or jet packs.
17. Do not send your main characters to infiltrate a party at the rich white people's house wearing formal evening gowns while the geeky comic relief waits outside in a van and gives directions from a tiny radio nestled in your main characters' ears. Rich white people live in Faraday cages, OK? You're going to have to figure out a better way to communicate.
18. Absolutely no character will ever be referred to as another character's "handler." What does that even mean? If you mean bodyguard, just say it. If you mean creepy dude with a nebulous mission and unexplained relationship to the power structure of your characters' secret cabal, it's time to scrap that "handler."
19. Gunfights should not take place in an abandoned factory/warehouse full of conveniently-located vats of boiling oil or giant hooks or bone-crunching gears.
20. Mad scientists are no longer permitted to operate from private islands or VIP areas of goth nightclubs.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Nothing too intellectual for a Saturday evening for me. :p
Surprises how few children were in the picture palace.

Match Point
Woody Allen seriously messes up a few lives and seems to take great pleasure in doing it. That's what I figured at least because the film really was a pleasure to watch. And wasn't Scarlett Johansson at her sexiest?
There were loadsa kids about when I saw Half Blood Prince but it was opening night. I saw it again 4 days after and it was a lot emptier. I now have it at home so I be watching that in a bit from the comfort of my ikea sofa.

The Escapist on Film 4 last night. Tried to like it as it had a good cast but totally confused by some of it because of too many flashbacks in it.

I saw it in the Odeon Gerrards Cross. Where children are caged up in summer camps during July and August so they don’t wreck mummy and daddies £1,000,000 mansions.
Taken from one of my regular haunts, io9.com.
See how many films spring to mind when you read these. Bet it sums up a large percentage of what you've seen.....
Haha that was great

Coco Avant Chanel starring Audrey Tautou yesterday. thought it was pretty good. Lovely costumes throughout of course, and the guy who played Coco's English lover was a bit of alright. If the film was really true to life, all of Coco Chanel's designs must have smelt like an ashtray - every scene where she was designing something, she had a cigarette hanging out of her mouth.
Planning on seeing this very soon. I've been hearing that it's very like la vie en rose which is of course no bad thing at all. I also want to see Antichrist, as i'm a sucker for ridiculous shock films and lots of Charlotte Gainsbourg :D
Haha a client told me aaaall about Anti Christ, I love love love gore films but this may be a bit too much. Its basically a very violent porn film. I can't help being curious and wanting to watch it though...

Im sure thats the film that even the judges at the Cannes Film Festival had said had pushed the boundaries of decency too far?? Very explicit in all aspects apparently. I doubt very much my local Odean cinema will be showing it!
Not my cup of tea at all:(

I'd steer clear of any john who gets off on ultra-violent porn. It's a dangerous enough world, isn't it?
Just now watching Scream of the Wolf. Loves me some cheesy late-night horror.

Do you have HO-EQ Coverage Endorsement?
I would have to question anyone who sees an erect penis shooting blood as porn. The inability to distinguish sexual cinema(porn) and horror cinema is more than a bit concerning to me. Shows how arse-upwards the western world has become from over consumption of the television/film world. Or something.

I just finished watching Quarantine. it was crazy.
Quarantine was god awful. I watched the original REC. first and then after Quarantine came out, I avoided it for as long as possible but figured "surely they can't TOO much harm in a remake". They just ruined it, americanized it and overacted it. So disappointing. Get yourself a copy of REC. instead
Rec is AWESOME, never bothered watching Quarrintine, it'd ruin Rec for me.
Haha violent porn does exist, there's a big base for it. Probably mostly in Japan. Not something I would watch, I'll just stick to the regular kind.
Antichrist will be a download jobby. I won't pay to see it.

Quatermass X-periment. This is intended to be the start of watching 48 Hammer films in chronlogical order. The monster is x-tremely silly. My favourite bit was when a woman protests on being refused admittance to the zoo: "But we've come all the way from Epping!"

Bill Pertwee aka Mr Hodges in Dads Army is Seans uncle or some relative. A really uninteresting fact that you probably didnt want to know but I thought I would mention it anyway.:)

Is that the ultimate hammer collection box set. I’ve had it in my Amazon basket for months waiting for the price to come down.
I got the 16 disc Ealing collection for 25 quid which I didn’t think was that bad.

No, it's not in that collection. Though, funnily enough, I wrote a review of that collection http://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B000HN31KQ/ref=cm_cr_dp_synop?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=0&sortBy=bySubmissionDateDescending#R1LNRGPBUQ2HJM which 2 out of 2 people found helpful. It is in this collection, though: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hammer-Horror-Early-Classics-DVD/dp/B000ERVFX0/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1249491930&sr=1-11

Hmm! I wonder if Ealing Studios does tours. I went on an exiting one at Pinewood a couple of years ago.
Not quite MGM or Universal America style but interesting for British film buff.
Came across an Ealing boxed set (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ealing-Comedy-DVD-Collection-Ladykillers/dp/B00006G9WJ/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1249504179&sr=8-6) for a fiver in a BHF charity shop which I let one of the girls in work have as she's a big fan of Ealing, Terry Thomas etc. Just seen the price it's going for secondhand on Amazon and I may cry.
Not my goblet of plasma but feck me that's some saving on the Hammer boxed set - £115.01! (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultimate-Hammer-Collection-Disc-Box/dp/B000HN31KQ/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top)

£115.01 seems very expensive to me for a Hammer boxed set.
Hammer and Ealing (while both British) are not, of course, the same. In fact, I'm not sure whether Hammer ever made films at Ealing. Quite a few Hammers were made at Bray Studios and later ones (I think) at Pinewood.

It was ... very two women kissing. Hahaha!
No, err, it was very classy done and très sensual I must say .... But not the kind of sensual it was made out to be by the press, i.e. full-on porn. My guess is that all movie critics are lonely (and straight, cause straight men + lesbian innuendo = recipe for disaster) males who have never seen two women kissing passionately, which is why the scene set them - and consequently the press surrounding the movie - on fire. ;)
