I've never understood what those monoliths in 2001 A Space Odyssey were supposed to be about. And the tail end of the film is baffling.
But one thing I like is Pan Am, a now long defunct airline, running space ships to the moon.

Another step of wisdom is my interpretation, i don´t buy that part though.
@ anja.k
Don´t try to get it. Just go with your feeling, maybe get stoned too. ;)
Also, to like it is not mandatory. :D

The first time I saw it was in a cinema with a Giant Vistarama Screen (which is one stop short of Cinerama). The volume level was in keeping with the screen size. No chance of falling asleep!

An interpretation;
The monkeys are all running 'round thick as two short planks. What's needed is an evolutionary jump. An alien culture puts a monolith on Earth which triggers the monkeys into thinking "These bones would make good weapons / tools!" Voila - evolutionary jump. Cut to the future and the alien culture have planted a monolith on a moon of Jupiter. If we can find the monolith then we're judged 'advanced' enough to take the next evolutionary step. Cue 'star child'.
Funny that I should just have posted this yesterday on Flickr. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/i_am_softlad/3435933660/) Or is it!? DUN-DUN-DAAAAAAAAAH!

  I still don't understand. Maybe it's just that I'm too tired. I'll have another look at the Softlad explanation at an earlier hour of another day.
Basically the monolith when touched was giving bursts in evolution.
The monkeys touched it and gained more intelligence ie. using tools etc.
The guy at the end in the bed touched it and then the StarChild was created ( That big baby thing floating round)

Yeah, I can see all that. But how the fuck could the monolith work?
And what was it with the old guy in bed at the end??
He was dying.
You're not supposed to understand how the monolith works, it's an alien piece of technology thingy they used or gave us or some shit.
I can't remember where I read the explanation of the whole thing but you should have a look, it makes it alot better
Let The Right One In.
A newly released (here, anyway) Swedish film that combines a coming of age drama, with a fell-in-love-with-a-vampire story with some genuine chills and scares.
It takes it time to tell the story and is all the better for it as it makes for a compelling and affecting drama. Not without its faults but on the whole, it's really good.
Apparently there's a Hollywood remake in the pipeline. :(

Oh -- I see -- a make-me-smarter-machine. I suppose it must have been battery powered, it obviously wasn't plugged into the mains. I imagine someone inventing a make-me-smarter machine, then using it on herself, and then (with the benefit of insight from being smarter) deciding to scrap it. :)

Def my fav film of 2008. Truly loved it, it stays with you for awhile after viewing it. I hate the thought of an American remake but in the hands of the right director, it could retain it's simplistic beauty. I just hope they dont try and Twilight it.

If you have a chance, read the book. That gives more details into what is portrayed in the film.
The monoliths are described as multi-purpose tools, created by a more advanced race.
The first one in the film was to kick-start a growth in evolution to the apes.
The second one was to trigger a message back to their makers when the race on earth had developed enough technology to reach the moon and excavate a magnetic abnormality there.
hmm it's really quite simple really returning to the film Kubrick did loads od cool tricks with that movie like having the dominant man ape look the camera straight in the eye abefore he roars his warning to intruders ... and during the sequence where Bowman is in the pos with all the lights reflected on his visor if you look at the audience in a movie theatre their faces reflect the light from the film too .. I read a interview where he states he set that up on purpose ...
and those stewardess's little pink uniforms mmm!

wow! having done a film of my own I'd be really scared of letting someone else translate that image ..I had someone in who did the bulk of the camera work ..because I was the subject most of the time..so couldn't be two places at once .. although to be honest the only footage I really like is that which I shot myself..the same goes for the editing that really got out of my hands .. I'd like to do another film but really I'm way too much of a control freak to let that happen unless I had my hands on every aspect ...
not all negative feelings ..it was a lot of work but I'm pleased I acheived it ... and I met one person because of it who's vision I value beyond all others

Not so sure about it yet, but all Ridley Scott films are of the need to watch more than once and it'll just keep getting better and better.
I mean, the first 45 minutes is quite gripping and, call me sappy, but I love the love story side of it. Yet, I stopped at about the 1/2 way point and still have not resumed.

Encounters at the End of the World
A documentary by Wim Wenders, looking at the landscapes, seascapes and the people working in research stations in Antartica.
As usual, he brings an idiosyncratic eye to the subject matter (his chat with a taciturn zoologist about the sexual behaviour and mental health of penguins is a hoot) but there's some jaw dropping photography and a sense of fatalism that brings a poignant edge to the film.
No wonder it got an Oscar nomination. Recommended.

Which I did. It's not your typical horror movie where silly teenagers go into dark alleys to get killed, yet it was very scary. From the minute Carol's sister leaves there's this continuous tension ... The ticking clock, the nun from the school next door ringing her bell or the phone just make it worse! I can see why it's a classic. :)

Well, it's just finished and I still have tears rolling down my cheeks. I rarely, if ever, cry at films and I usually hate ones with little children in a lead role. Oh well, seems those things need to be re-thought. What an amazing film - straight into the list of Carpy's favourites.
Spoilers follow - lot's of 'em.
The music is stirring in the all best ways, the visuals are extraordinary and the attention to detail just incredible. The way things worked into the fictional world from the real one was really smart - everything from the teeth to the way things alter as Roy made mistakes in the telling. The story & characters of the story were culled from the scenes in Roy's film shown in the hospital at the end too - I loved the Indian / Indian pun :p
The start is so quirky and unusual but then it just sinks the dagger in and really goes for the heart. Good grief, it's just inescapable. It's bad enough when Wallace (possibly the best monkey actor ever) dies or when you realise Roy is getting her to help him commit suicide but when the girl & the stuntman are both in tears with her pleading that the drowning masked bandit should not die as he kills each character off in a fit of depression.......jesus, that was tough to watch! Even in that, though, there were moments of staggering beauty in the bleakness - the belly-birds flying from the mouth of the Mystic as he got axes in his back from the troops of Odius or the slave laying back on the bed of arrows in his back.
It's a story of the strength of the human soul, told with the vision of a painter.
I'm off to dry my eyes and compose myself.

I saw it at the cinema, and it was still utterly, utterly shit. I think they rushed it when it leaked, because there were A LOT of shit animations/graphics, you could definitely tell when people were on the scene, or simply pasted in. No blood what so ever. Terribly cut scenes. Obvious shit acting. Terrible and predictable story (although i didn't catch onto the whole love betrayal thing). Shit end 'boss'. Perfect blow dried hair in every scene, even when he burst out of the liquid box. Too much 'anger' for the sake of anger. Roger Rabbit like blades. Eurgh, did i mention it was a shit film?

Jeux d'Enfants
Beautiful imagery - very Amélie Poulain - and an original twist on the 'impossible love'-story. Nevertheless, the ending was too disturbing for my liking, which probably makes me a wuss, but whatever! They should have chosen another final challenge ("Cap ou pas cap?") that was less ... definite. Myeh, so I might watch it again but then skip the last five minutes and invent my own ending, there. :p

You have to watched this leaked version, it's hilarious. There's sections where it's just a silver person model showing where the animated character would be, it's so funny. Kind of interesting seeing real pre-final production stuff though but yes, shit movie.

Apparently there is a big-screen version being worked on at the moment. Apparently Neil Gaiman wasn't completely happy with the BBC version (I don't remember it too well, but can't imagine it being as amazing as the book), so I'm glad it's getting another adaptation. Not sure who'll be in it yet. Maybe James McAvoy as Richard? That could work.

next on the agenda is Bill Maher's Religulous, really looking forward to his completely taking the piss on religion - should be GOOD.
Saw the trailer for this last week - it looks like he's picked an easy target.......but that makes it no less worth watching and certainly no less funny. I think I'm liable to like this very much.
As to my last film I finally saw David Lynch's "The Straight Story" last night. I love the way the film is so slow that you feel like you've done the journey on the mower with him. Between the gorgeous pacing and the ridiculously human finale (no, honestly, I had something in my eye) it was a bit a cracker which is quite something considering pretty much nothing happens for the entire film !

and it's interesting about it being slow ... I was suprised that some girls on another board were reviewing one of my favourite films and although they loved it thay all commented on the fact that it was slow in places ... and that this was to do with their attention deficit blah blah blah .. this is the way modern cinema has gone ..fust cut and edit ... you ever looked at a say somerset house wonderful electric? ..even on a film like that the camera never stays on any one subject for more than a few seconds ..this is probably because if your eye and mind dwell for long enough then the fantasy starts to unravel ..this is the way of modern TVand video especially pop promo videos ...
and what I always loved about Goldfrapp was that celebrity gloss world fantasy did unravel because Alison is just so ordinary and then because of that she twists off into some different kinda fantasy .. the Straight Story is a little like this ...

And it's the exact same as children's television, the camera pans in and out, shakes, bright colours, people jumping, always trying to grab the childrens attention.
That's why thick people like all action films.

I only just read that the guy who played Alvin Straight in it, Richard Farnsworth, was terminally ill with bone cancer during the filming, hence the many shots just from the waist up or when you see him struggling with his legs - he was genuinely like that. The year after it was finished and he'd got the nomination for best actor the pain got too much and he got a pistol and killed himself.
It was a hard enough watch before but knowing that now will make it even tougher a second time!

I was in a similar position when I saw it last night at the IMAX (had seen some of the films and some episodes of the TV shows before, but was never a big fan or anything), and I really liked it too. I think it did a great job of appealing to people who weren't big fans of the franchise. I thought Zachary Quinto (Spock) and Karl Urban (McCoy) were especially good.

I totally agree, she was great in that film.
Last film I saw - School Of Rock earlier tonight. Pretty funny film, and quite heart-warming too. And good to see Sarah Silverman in it, I think she's hilarious.
The Slaughter Rule (2002).
Trailer here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bo0FMvCnAO8).
Ryan Gosling is tremendous. He plays a high school football player whose father is hit and killed by a train (not giving much away there, otherwise I would have made it spoiler proof) and who ends up being thrown off his football team as a result. He gets recruited for a ramshackle rogue football team coached by a strange, desperate man played by David Morse (great character actor whom you may remember from the Lars Von Trier/Bjork film Dancer in the Dark. You'd definitely recognize the face even if you don't know the name). The film inches slowly towards a nasty conflict between the young football player and his coach whose mysterious past gets revealed more and more as the film progresses and as his attachment to the boy gets more and more desperately troubling. Don't let the sports references scare you off. I don't know a damn thing about football and I loved it. Great debut film for the directors.

"The Early Years Of American Zoetrope", one of five docs with the THX1138 dvd.
It's pretty interesting with some great insights by Francis Ford Coppola, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Martin Scorsese amongst others. It goes from around the time of "Easy Rider", through the original USC film student THX 1138 short and on from there. It's easy to forget the full film version of THX was made in 1970 and is 39 years old!!

Angels and Demons - was more of an action film. This compares to what I thought was a more complex book were you are following the clues. All that was stripped from the film. That said I really enjoyed the film on another level.
I’m off to Rome next week a complete coincident I hasten to add and nothing to do with the footy either. The only palace I shall visit when was in the film will be the Sistine chapel if it is still standing after the Red Devils have been there.
Watched Chaos Theory yesterday. Nice flick. Maybe a little bit too sentimental at the end.
Always a pleasure to see Emily Mortimer.
A shame Sarah Chalke (Elliot from Scrubs) had to play such a slutty bitch.

Watched Being John Malkovich for the first time ever last night (not quite sure how I missed it through the years), and thought it was really good. Malkovich seems like he must have a really good sense of humour to send himself up like that. Difficult to believe the film's ten years old too - it doesn't seem like it came out that long ago.
I'd read somewhere that originally the film was going to be Being Kevin Bacon, but that Kevin Bacon had baulked at the idea. I don't think it would have been as good that way anyway. There's something that's just funny about John Malkovich.

Terminator 3 , seeing T4 on Wednesday .
there already seems to be a lot of plot points that don't quite make sense...as this movie is meant to be set before what we've already previously seen (yes I know...how that sounds) but that part makes sense, this new trilogy is like the last Star Wars trilogy only instead of going back in time...we're going forward into the future to see how it all started originally (not entirely sure if that's going to work) hope they don't make the shit choices those twats made on Wolverine by completely ignoring the previous films.
Terminator 3 was a good film, they at least tied in a few of the previous storylines (I know a lot of people hated it...) plus it had Kristanna Loken in her bareness, so it can't really be that bad :D
I can't wait to see it...even if I'm not entirely sold yet on Bale being Connor, as all the clips I've seen him in, he's doing that godawful batman-constipated voice. (I hated both the Batman films if you couldn't tell)

The Island kinda like Logans Run meets Blade Runner borrowing bits and pieces from the matrix but still a better movie than all those films except BR ..
these dystopian futures Like Gattaca come scarily close to portraying the world we live in ....
and then I go read this crap ... what ever happened to the concept of freedom? ...still at least those parents that choose not to have the jab for their kids won't have to subject their kids to the crippling institution of indoctrination called state education ...
Children should not be allowed to go to school unless they can prove they have had the MMR vaccine, a public health expert said. Public health expert called for the MMR vaccination to be made compulsory Sir Sandy Macara, former chairman of the British Medical Association (BMA), wants the MMR jab, which guards against measles, mumps and rubella, to be made compulsory.
He has submitted a motion for debate at the BMA's annual conference later this month, the BBC reported.
The number of children being given the vaccine plummeted after research wrongly linked it to an increased risk of autism.
The drop in take-up has been blamed for measles outbreaks across the country and raised fears it could lead to an epidemic.
Children should receive their first dose of the vaccine at 13 months of age and the second at around three years and four months of age.
But one in four children under five has not had both injections.
Sir Sandy said: "Our attempts to persuade people have failed. The suggestion is that we ought to consider making a link which in effect would make it compulsory for children to be immunised if they are to receive the benefit of a free education from the state."
The BBC reported that the London Strategic Health Authority asked the Government if it could introduce compulsory vaccinations, but was told the voluntary immunisation system would remain in place.
Documents obtained through a freedom of information request revealed it asked about the "feasibility of requiring an immunisation certificate for measles before children go to school".
Saw T4 this afternoon , it was everything and more of what I wanted from it . Thrills , spills and robot automobiles . Went to see Cheri last night - based on the Colette novel, with Michelle Pfeiffer playing an ageing courtesan who unwisely falls in love with a callow young man (played by Rupert Friend - Keira Knightley's boyfriend). I quite liked it. Kathy Bates as the boy's mother gives a funny performance, as does Pfeiffer, and there's some beautiful art nouveau production design. I have to say though, Keira's boyfriend has a nice body, but facially he's not all that.

Out of curiosity, have you seen mpd pyscho? Me and my weird friend had a japanese horror night last mnth and spent half of the night in laughter. Mpd is so odd, half of it is censored and some schoolgirl licks her phone. Tres amusing!
I went back a second time to the Baader Meinhof Komplex it's a brilliant film made by the guy who did Downfall what's scary is back then young people got off their asses and tackled the American problem head on ..and although the situation was pretty complex politically the so called terrorists don;t come across that way in retrospect ... in this highly credited and factually tight movie the heroines are without doubt Meinhof and Gudrun Enslinn ...Andreas Baader comes across as a bit of a jerk and it's really the girls who were driving the RAF at that point..
It's hilarious but at the time BMW were a failing auto manufacturer but .. the Baader Meinhof bunch favoured them as a getaway vehicle and this led to the cars being dubbed Baader Meinhof Wagen and as a result the car became chic with young radicals and the company once ailing never looked back ... ha ha ha you have to laugh at the ways of humans ...

A strange aspect of that movie is that the starting point is so like a spanking film. Basically, out of control American brat is sent to a strict English boarding school. But not only does it have no spanking, there isn't even a hint of off-screen spanking. Interesting to think about the very different ways in which the idea can be developed. :)

A return to form for the franchise, with a good few nods to moments from previous films.

Please do because it has been about 1000 years since there has been a decent new horror film and I am hearing good things about this one.

I've been trying to catch up on Lindsay Lohan's back catalogue, and the film I've seen most recently was The Parent Trap. I wasn't expecting too much, but a double dose of cute li'l 11 year old Lindsay!!! It had me in floods of tears. Amazing!

So, Drag me to Hell... (havent had a chance to look back through all this thread so apologies if anyone's talked about it yet)
Frickin HILARIOUS! Id read it was very tongue in cheek.... it was really funny. the first half hour was pretty 'jumpy' scary and there were other moments where i did want to cover my eyes. But mainly it was a little bit jumpy, a little bit gross and plenty funny. This wont give anything away - after half an hour of being vaguely scared, i knew things were changing when the old lady got her eye stapled together with a staple gun. Yep, it was funny.
The wife was dissapointed - she wanted to be terrified. I didnt mind as had heard enough clues that it definitely wasnt gonna scare me like a good old Japanese horror or something!
I dont know whether i can even recommend it or not..... go, if you want to jump.... then laugh!

I bought that a few weeks ago - The Fall is great - beautiful visuals, especially as the story started to change according to the conversation between the pair of them. Tarsem has a real eye and his work was the only thing that made The Cell worth watching!

The Cell was a great film! It didn't credit it but it was based on a sci-fi novel I read years back ... I wish I could remember what it was called ... the imagery in the Cell is truly amazing ...
I just watched Twilight. It was crap. A load of chickflick rubbish. I feel dirty. I have an urge to scrub myself clean.

Oh, yeah, it certainly is an amazing thing to watch and the base of the idea is very clever but I think the film's plot just loses it's way a little. Certainly worth a spin for some of the amazing shots though, that's for sure.
I think the book was better in the plot deptartment .... The Fall is a much better story ... it really gets across a childs world view ...

You should check out "Let The Right One In" to restore your faith in teenage vampire movies.:D
Got around to seeing "In the Loop" yesterday, which was a hoot and yet seems uncomfortably close to real life....scary.
The Edinburgh Film Festival starts this week and I've got half a dozen films booked, starting off with an Australian film called "Van Diemen's Land" about a group of convicts who escape a brutal Tasmanian prison in 1822, only to find that things are worse on the outside.
There's a lot of buzz around a sci-fi film called "Moon" which is directed by David Bowie's son. All the screenings are sold out but I'm hoping there'll be another on the final day of the festival.

Doomsday.
Good things:
Rhona Mitra - beautiful, strong and can pull her own eye out to use as a spy camera. That has to be full of win.
The woman in all the promo press with the face tattoo - used shamelessly in the film promo as the focal point but given little or nothing of substance in the movie proper. Criminally underused but ridiculously striking. Her face, hair & look is stunning. I'd love to say her acting was but she isn't given chance to do any. At all.
19622Rhona, being strong.
19621Striking, but underused, warrior woman
Bad things:
Pretty much all else. The number of grisly, in-your-face, splattery deaths are so frequent you just laugh especially when a rabbit takes on some giant machine gun turrets early in the film. No, it doesn't win. Yes, it explodes.
You can stitch the story together from Mad Max, Escape From New York and pretty much any apocalyptic virus movie ever. Even then, with a lot of the known-good ideas culled from other places, there's still plot holes the size of...er...well, huge things. Pretty much everybody dies in the whole of Scotland for 30 years, everything burns/decays/goes out/shuts down yet there seems to be plenty of petrol for Mad Max style car chases that go on for ever AND enough electric to waste on a bizarre & pointless cannibal meets Glastonbury pole-dancing bloke-murdering showtime.
Finally, everybody has the mantra that they should, if in doubt, overact in the hope they can push it so far that they end up back in the good zone again. On the up side they may get more chance of being noticed before being impaled, fried, squashed, exploded or beheaded.
Verdict:
I've no idea why but I quite enjoyed it. Sorry. :p

I thought pretty much the same thing , loads of what looked like plots just dying and going nowhere , and exactly the same dont know why I liked it but I did . Semispoiled by Sean Pertwee being in it - after seeing Star Stories (think it was the one with Jude Law in , every time I see him I hear the words "my dad was Doctor Who you know" :)
Going to see Transformers 2 this evening , it`ll be like being a kid again , looking forward to it , I enjoy the cinema as an escape from reality of the grownup world , a couple of hours of not being concerned over bills or my bathroom being a building site for over a year .
Want to pretentiously sneer at the film or me ? grow up and go and fuck yourself - you know who you are .

Weird but brilliant
I've seen 3 fantastic films at the Edinburgh International Film Festival since Thursday:
Van Diemen's Land
An Australian film set in Tasmania in 1822. It's about a group of British convicts who break out of their harsh prison to find that the environment is even more harsh. The film, based on a true story, charts their descent in to savagery as they struggle to survive. It's horrific and absolutely rivetting.
Pomegranates and Myrrh
A Palestinian film about a newly wed couple living just outside Ramallah whose happiness is short lived as events threaten to overwhelm them. The political situation obviously features but it's the impact on ordinary people that's the focus and the film subtly and movingly charts how they face up oppression and injustice.
Sin Nombre
A USA/Mexican co-production that tells the story of a teenage Honduran girl escaping poverty in her country gets caught up with a Mexican gang member on the run and the dangers they face as they seek to get to the border and the apparent safety of the USA. A simply stunning film. It's getting a limited UK release in August and hopefully we'll see the others in the cinema sometime soon.
If the other films I've got lined up this week are up to this standard, it'll make for an unforgettable Festival. I just wish I had more time to see the many other goodies on offer at the moment.

Just got back from seeing Telstar, the film about the 60s record producer/songwriter Joe Meek. It's a pretty good film, especially considering the budget probably wasn't very high. He had a really interesting and influential life, but quite tragic too. It's amazing how many famous bands Meek had some kind of connection to. I went to see it at Holloway Road Odeon, right near where it all happened, appropriately enough.
