it was better than 2 and 3...nearly as good as 4...but SAW is still the best...and I very much doubt there will be any more SAW's...logically anyway...they could always go the copycat route...you never know...if they keep getting different directors for each follow up...we might even see a return to SAW...it could happen...not very likely...but it COULD happen.
oh and just again...SAW was Directed by James Wan, SAW's 2, 3 and 4 were Darren Lynn Bousman, and 5 was David Hackl (all of whom have had jobs on each SAW)
so out of 3 directors and 5 films...there are only 3 good films...or 1 great film 2 good-ish films and 2 terrible films...from good to bad they are 1, 4, 5 and 2 and 3 are pretty much the same...with some good parts but just...no...no no no
sorry...I do seem to go off on one every time I see SAW (ha ha ha) mentioned
haven't seen any films recently...must rectify that soon...;)

I heard there was definitely going to be a saw 6 and that it was likely to be the last one... it was filmed at the same time as saw 5 to reduce costs as their budgets have decreased significantly (you can tell... they've sacked the writers by the looks of saw 5!) but it still wont be released until next halloween.
Saw is obviously the best. Was saw 3 the one with the doctor and Saw 4 the one with the ice block contraption? I think they've got progressively worse!

An Italian film based on a book that shows the reality of life in Naples and Caserta under the pervasive and poisonous influence of organised crime.
As you can imagine, it paints a grim picture. The writer of the book is still in hiding, apparently. An absorbing film, though, once you get to grips with the different story threads.

Olga's House of Shame. A 1966 black & white sadism romp. Very weird -- it has a pseudo-documentary element with much of the action explained by a voiceover (sometimes telling the viewer no more than the pictures convey). The action is never very convincing -- whip marks look as though they've been drawn on with sticks of charcoal (and perhaps they were). Still, it must have been very strong stuff for 1966. I was 20 on 1966, I wonder how it took me over 40 years to so much as hear of the existence of this film... But, truth to tell, a lot of it is pretty dull, viewed in 2008... Maybe its most interesting aspect is the range of mid-1960s underwear on display.

Two films in recent days:
The Baader-Meinhof Complex.
A German film charting the rise and fall of the Red Army Faction in the 70s. Ambitious, for sure, and there was probably too much to try to capture in one film. Well made and really compelling, though. Very chilling for those of us who have memories of some of the events of the time.
Hunger
An Irish film covering the events in the Maze prison in the early 80s (IRA prisoners staging a dirty protest and hunger strike in pursuit of political status) and focussing on Bobby Sands in particular.
A stunning film, it has to be said, although, again, a difficult watch.
More successful at conveying the characters, motivation and thinking of the central characters.

if you'd like to go a bit more into detail, try "todesspiel" by heinrich breloer. it's a two-part movie with both actors scenes and also interviews and original tv footage of that time. although the best part of the baader-meinhof komplex is the illustration of the situation/conflict (psychologically) between ulrike on the one hand, and gudrun&andreas on the other when they're imprisoned in stammheim.
this movie really had a lot of pre-release discussions and press, even more than it was with "der untergang". lots of pros and cons; actually the widow of murdered banker juergen ponto returned her bundestverdienstkreuz she received years ago in protest,
because of the picture of her husband's assassination.
recently i had a read through the letter of ulrike meinhof (they mention it at the beginning of the movie) which she wrote on the occasion of the shaa's visit to germany - a brilliant piece!
edit: here's a trailer for "der baader-meinhof komplex":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAyCi4cObmI
Thanks for signposting that other film Roelle.
I can imagine the amount of debate going on in Germany connected to the release of the film. It must be very difficult, especially, for the families of the victims to see the murders so graphically portrayed.
Necessary, of course. But, as you say, the most interesting parts include the alienation of Ulrike Meinhof from the others (although I thought the film could have explored this better). I was also struck by the way Meinhof's earlier dilemma about getting involved or not, was portrayed. Martina Gedeck gave a fine performance.
So, too, did the others. Especially Johanna Wokalek as Gudrun Ensslin. Very scary, especially as she came across as the most fanatical.
Incidentally, our newspapers report today that Christian Klar will be released from prison in January. Apparently, he's still unrepentant.:(

One of the songs on the film soundtrack says "love is better than chocolate". It does seem a far-fetched notion! :D Perhaps it refers exclusively to lesbo-love?

Two films in recent days:
The Baader-Meinhof Complex.
A German film charting the rise and fall of the Red Army Faction in the 70s. Ambitious, for sure, and there was probably too much to try to capture in one film. Well made and really compelling, though. Very chilling for those of us who have memories of some of the events of the time.

in 2007 I drove through Hamburg with my mate Jean Herve and he pointed up to a window and said "I used to work in an office there with Gudrun Enslin" well I dunno I tend to feel there's never smoke with out fire ..and the RAF and the IRA had an argument, and it was a valid one I guess and I don't have a problem with the ira's or raf's actions with the exception of killing people ..they had a point .they shoulda just blown up the infratstucture ..the power distribution ..the sewers shit like that left out the killing ....that was then this is now hopefully we've seen the last of Mr Bush and his bunch of terrorists for a while ...

Friday - ''Quantum of Solace''. Not bad but ''Casino Royale'' was a lot better. And I didn't like Olga Kury-something. I guess not every model is a good actress..

I'm not at all keen on Bond films. I keep hoping that the smug bastard will get his come-uppance, and her never does. Why doesn't a Bond villain just put a bullet through his head? Instead, they try unfeasible ways of killing him that don't work. :(

There's a Korean horror with that title I've had on my list to see for ages.......but I expect it's not that one :p
Waltz with Bashir.
An Israeli film (done in graphic animation) based on the story of a film-maker seeking to recover his memories of his time on national service in 1982 - during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon and the massacre of Palestinian civilians at the Sabra and Chatila refugee camps by Lebanese Christian Phalangists.
A stunning piece of work - brilliantly designed and animated. A horrifying and moving story.
Again, something that stirred the memories. I guess my contemporaries who are filmmakers are exploring the big events of the 70s and 80s. And giving us insights that news reports can't manage to.
my own - 18 fucking times - to check on the burning thank heavens it's only 7 minutes long .... hey I still like it ...

Crap title, crap theme song and crap opening titles, but a good film :)
Quantum of Solace was awful...such a shame, as he is still great as Bond...there was just no story to it, nothing really meshed together at all, it just seemed like a random list of scenes that could have been in any film, plus that jump-out-of-plane-without-a-parachute scene would have been great...if it had a more believable ending to it...but a parachute opening about 10ft away from the ground isn't really going to stop you from dying...or at least breaking every bone in your body. (yes I know...it's just a film blah blah blah)
and the fact that the villain in this film was about 12 years old didn't really make you quiver nervously in your seat...
oh god yeah...what about the English agent (or the Hooker with the English accent as I'm going to name her) why was she dressed in a mac? and seemingly not much else ;) (I'd normally have no problem with that...but it just seemed like another random scene) at least she didn't wear a trilby ;)
nothing memorable really happened in it, no real plot was there to be seen...just meh!
I quite liked what they did with the title sequence...not really much else you can do with that song and that title...
such a let down

ive only seen the opening on youtube, i think its one of the best bond title sequences. its certainly high on my list of favourites anyway. the colour palette they've used it sumptuous :)
Best theme songs in my opinion have been A View To A Kill (don't judge me!) and The World Is Not Enough, best titles is too tough to call, but Die Another Day is for certain the worst.
Die Another Day is better as an instrumental. It's weird, but it reminds me of Rob Dougan, which is good.

Come, now. Age has transformed me into a hideous gargoyle and the nearest I expect to receiving love is watching it in films. And I did enjoy watching it in Desert Hearts. I think the sexual difference thing is actually quite complicated. For men, of course, money makes them much more attractive. (Consider Peter Stringfellow, if you can do so without vomitting.) Money probably works less well for women. For either sex, aging without great wads of cash is a bummer. But I generally keep cheerful. Laughing at yourself helps a lot -- and that goes for either sex. And (back on the original point) watching a film with two attractive women in which the girl gets the girl in the end is something that always lifts my spirits. :) :)

that'll be Inland Empire ..that grew on me ...took more than one viewing ... I've followed his career since we went to the Gate cinema in 1977 to watch Eraserhead ... Twin Peaks is an all time high .. I just relate to him ..a lot of what he says ..and the way he says it just resonates with me ..painter turned film maker .. yep ...he's a mate of mine ah ha ha ;-)
on the otherhand I actually rather enjoyed Practical Magic ..with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock .. these witchy films always make me chuckle ..it's not quite like this but then again they do capture something of the essence of women getting together to do a few spells ..ha ha ha and Ms Bullock ..I'm sorry I do quite fancy her ..she's cute with glasses ha ha ha! Plus Danny Boyle Directed it!

I really enjoyed Mulholland Drive. Bewildering but enjoyable -- probably best not to try to make sense of it.
Me too...absolutely knocked me over, that one.
It's filled with so much suspense, and it keeps on going throughout the entire film. Plus, that scene in the Silencio bar is on top of my list of best scenes ever. If not the best.

I watched Mulholland Drive in the company of someone who didn't enjoy it (trying to make sense of it, instead of just lapping it up). With some films, that would have wrecked my pleasure -- but not with that baby!
Hot lesbians, great story and a score by Angelo Badalamenti.
It really has it all.
Mulholland Dr. is one of my all time faves.
Watched The Rocker yesterday. And I really shouldn't have done that.... meh...
You don't know any real lesbians, do you?
Unfortunatley I do, sure enough they were they most unattractive bunch possibly ever. Although there are one or two hot lesbians floating around in here I've noticed. They just don't seem to be gettin' it on like they do in the movies though

That type outgrows it, usually after college. It think it's just a ploy to get a man or attention or something.
Oooh they aren't gonna like that one.

I was reading up about Jimmy Stewart(Its A Wonderful Life) and found out during WWII he has a Colonel in the US Air Force and flew 20 combat missions in B-24's.I think he rose to Brigadier General after the war and still remains the highest ranked member of the armed forces ever to be a leading actor

I'm still in the middle of "Pirates of Silicon Valley". Trev and I are watching it. It's about how Bill Gates and Steve Jobs rose to fame.

I had to watch that as part of my course. That Apple guy was pretty damn hot until he got a haircut.

I just finished watching "The Happening" on DVD, and wish I hadn't.
Though watching Zoey Deschanel for 2 hours isn't bad, I like her quirky ways.
I'm the only person in the whole world who likes that film. I don't even think M.Night was too keen on it himself, despite the B-Movie acting I loved it.

Considering I was shyte scared (still am) of Signs, and I think M Night really knows how to create palpable suspense. But this movie fell flat for me, it seemed a little rushed and seemed to stop start in its pace.
M. Night is hit and miss for me.
*hides under covers from green Aliens*
Urgh... Signs was such a big piece of shit I wanted to gouge my own eyes out with a rusty spoon.
Didn't have any rusty spoons (damn stainless steel!) so instead my eyesight is still here.
Hated every single character and hoped they'd all die. They didn't, bastards.
I love all his stuff except Lady in the Water, but the rest are some of my favourites. The scores are incredible too, Howard is a fuckin' genius.

"Hello little girl, may I enquire about your rusty spoons? The feeling of rust on my SALAD fingers is almost orgasmic"
hehe
I know, I can appreciate that people think its a shit movie, and it probably is. But I put it down to my uncle telling me scary stories when I was a kid, and him letting me watch horror movies about Aliens, and something in Signs triggered that juvenille fear of the unknown. The sounds of footsteps outside the door, the Alien on the top of the barn, the one walking at the party.
Scares the crap out of me. I was in Kansas at a truck stop at midnight waiting for the Greyhound to fill up and the guy I was with (and told my fear about Signs) pointed to the wind blowing in the corn fields, and started making the clicking noises. I hit him and pretended I wasnt scared, but I rushed back onto the bus and looked out the window eyes darting outside hoping not to see an Alien hiding in the corn.
Don't ask, its weird I know, its a completely irrational and illogical fear.

I've seen The Descent. It has some scary stuff, but I found it a bit disappointing (although I can't remember why).

The orc-like creatures were the disappointment for me in this.
They weren't scary. They were silly.
The soundtrack is pretty bloody good though.
I always assumed The Descent was the usual churned out horror attempt crap but I'm hearing alot of good things about it in the last year, I might take it from work tonight.
There's gonna be a part 2 btw.
The director/writer will be the one that directed Eden Lake and wrote My Little Eye (James Watkins)
Both quite disturbing british horror flicks.
Eden Lake had the wonderfull Kelly Reilly playing one the leading role.
My Little Eye had a great soundtrack (especially the end credits with a great Bikini Atol tune)

Just finished watching Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles.
I liked it (not as much as Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain, though)
although, I don't know why they had Jodie Foster in there.
Her French was good.

He even flew in a B-52 over Vietnam. Ever since I found that out I have wondered what he'd had been like as Slim Pickens' character, Major Kong, in Dr. Strangelove.:D

Also caught the tail end of The Last King of Scotland.
So I have almost seen the whole thing now, after have only watched the beginning previously.
I have always loved Forrest Whittaker, he is so brilliant.
I had heard so much about it word of mouth, I always seemed to overhear strangers talking about it on so many different occasions.

I watched Elf for the first time last night. I was high on Night Nurse and I don't know if that made it funnier than it should be. Zooey Deschanel is so much fitter with dark hair.
She's pretty hot, especially in The Happening.
I however watched a film by the makers of Saw called Dead Silence, I don't know where to begin without how terrible it was and I cannot stress enough how you should never, ever even contemplate thinking about watching it.

noooooooooooooooooooooooooo I disagree soooooooooooooooooooooooooo much, you can see her eyes more (for some reason) when she has the blonde hair, (that and the little Elf outfit she was wearing :D)

The very one, I honestly don't know how it got the go ahead and why they didn't cop on and pack it in while filming, it's quite possibly the worst movie I've ever seen and I've seen Dragon Wars
