Transformers - mindless CGI involving massive robots smashing up cars / buildings / each other - yum yum. Embarrassingly childish in places (two minutes in 'til the end credits to be precise) it's a pleasing enough way to kill over two precious hours of ones life. Couldn't make out which robot was which at the end and it didn't matter a jot.

Where did you get to see it on the big screen ? I remember seeing the Director's Cut when it first got (re) released at the Odeon Leicester Square and it was an amazingly huge screen and the sound ...... wow.

In one of the Cineworld cinemas. It was Fruji Film Festival and ''Blade Runner'' was one of many great films they showed, ''The Godfather'', ''Jaws'', ''True Romance'', ''Gladiator'', ''Kill Bill'' and a lot more. This festival was at Odeon as well. Four Thursdays with different films at different Cineworld and Odeon cinemas, and all about one time.

Millenium Actress (Sennen joyû)
17036

It's an interview, a history of Japan through the ages, a documentary, a love story, a vignette of recollection, a fantasy and above all a Kubrickian time-travelling sci-fi head fuck. Film scenes become reality become memory become mixed with the interview that cause them to be recounted in the first place. Narrative moves forwards and backwards, things repeat across time and people turn up where they should, shouldn't and couldn't.

The head scrambling shouldn't be a surprise as it's by the director of "Perfect Blue", Satoshi Kon, but where that movie left me somewhat quaking in a ball in the corner this one left me with an overflowing heart & head, both fulfilled and wanting more.

Quite simply one of the best anime films I've ever seen in my life and one that you should sit down and watch too.

Extraordinary & completely life affirming.

"Tomb Raider - Ascension"

17086

I really enjoyed it - an hour very well spent!

Some fantastic Lara backstory to fill in before the games including her parents, Lara as a child and even how the 'Tomb Raider' nickname came about. A right amount of action and humour, a couple of subtle in-jokes for the gamers and a surprisingly good Lara character. It only takes a few mins to accept her as the person and get drawn into it.

If you like the games, Lara and/or the films then go over to here (http://www.tombraiderascension.com/) and watch or download it.

It may be a fan film but the Hollywood habit to "leave it set up for a sequel" certainly rubbed off !

a few films I saw (not too long ago)

Hellboy 2 (hated the first one...so I cannot ask for any sympathy for having to sit through the even worse sequel) not sure if it's meant to be serious or funny...but it fails on both...and David Hyde Pierce should have been made to voice fishy (forgotten his name) at gun point (I know, I know the studios wanted a big name in the first one and didn't want the actual actors voice bla bla bla...though there is hardly any difference in their voice tone, there is a difference in performance...at least David could deliver a line...(even if it was in a shit film)

and bloody Selma feckin Blair, what a waste of good film that could have been used to watch paint dry.

which brings me to my next film...Selma Blair isn't all that bad when compared to Liv fuckingshitwoodenactressuglymunter Tyler, oh my god...how does she get work? and yes...the film is The Strangers, went to see it opening night, was hoping for a great horror/thriller...what a let down...don't you just hate it when a trailer shows you one of the best lines in the film (in this case the ONLY good line in the film, "Because you were home") and it's basically the ending of the film...

there was some great ideas in the film...but really how many times can you show a door with a loud knocking being heard and think it's scary?...once or twice maybe...but not as many times as they did it in this...

utter crap....rahhhhh

which brings me on to something good...something that redeems the person in question of his film making ability...(though he did marry that gapped toothed OAP who used to make good songs...:D
It's ROCKNROLLA, I was very skeptical about this as his last few films were utter shite, all I can say is, more of the Russian's would have been better...they were hilarious.

and the most recent was (FILM OF THE YEAR at least for me) Tropic Thunder (went to the preview showing last week, from start to finish a fucking brilliant comedy, with everyone on top notch form...and surprisingly the funniest person in the whole film (for me anyway) was Tom Cruise,
brilliant performance from him...maybe he isn't all that bad after all ;):)

just finished no country for old men,...well,
it's difficult to describe...my first coen-brothers
movie, so i'm really baffled...somehow an odd atmosphere,
all a bit slow, but then you're suddenly exposed to gross violence,
and i still have to come to terms with the ending (especially that he
kills carla jean, that's :( )...

...but surely a fucking brilliant win to my dvd collection!

Coens are great. Watch ''Fargo'' (thriller) with Frances McDormand and Steve Buscemi (I love this guy) or ''Hudsucker Proxy'' (crazy comedy) with Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh and great Paul Newman.

"Taken"

Liam Neeson is an ex-CIA agent pursuing the kidnappers of his daughter. What we get is a lean, taught, thriller, lacking much credibility and totally lacking in any subtlety but entertaining nonetheless.

Luc Besson was one of the writers and you can see one or two similarities with "Leon".

I don't think the 2-disc does have subs - it was one of the first things I checked for after watching the single disc one I have and remember feeling disappointed so that's probably the case. Worth checking though, as ever.

From what i've heard the French edition has English subs on both the movie and the features, and there is also the option between just the 2-Disc edition or the special edition that comes with the storyboard book.

Nice linky ! I've just clicked through to Amazon.fr and it's about 40 euros - I probably can't justify that at the moment as that would buy me a lot of other things instead but it's a very nice set, even if the book is only in Japanese !

Well, i just ordered it, so i'll be able to tell you for definite soon if the English is included or not (and if that link is correct, the box looked different in the pic on Amazon.fr, that made me a bit cautious)

The book is kinda what i really want anyway, the Perfect Blue one had a few storyboarded deleted scenes at the back so it would be cool if there were some in this too.

He's taken the beauty, the humor, and the true horror out of horror.

There shouldn't have been humour in it in the first place, humour and horrors are a big "No No".

Besides I wouldn't exactly class his stuff as horror.......come to think of it I don't really know what I'd class it as.....Sci Fi? Anyway, I don't think it's horror.

The Happening

Am I actually the only person in the whole world who likes this film?!

The idea itself (as with most Shamalamadingdong movies) is fantastic, the scenes of 'the happening' taking place are utterly compelling and in some cases genuinely shocking as you expect people to look after themselves. The ending was a bit cheap though ok.............

......but there is one bit let down for me - the acting ! Both of the two leads look like you're watching their costumed run through. Both are unbelievable, unengaging and poor to a comedic level for about 99% of the film. There is no chemistry on screen either so I just couldn't believe they'd care for each other and thus no urgency

Yep, a mixed bag as with his last few !

THANK YOU! I love the premise to it, that's what everyone gives out about it for " Ugh yeh Trees killing people", that's not it! It's a good take on a very real thing and I love the idea of how they do it and the scenes are incredible.

But yes I do hate the B-Movie acting in it ( which was apparantly intentional) and Wahlberg should NOT have been in the movie but the story and ideas were amazing. I'm unsure about the ending, I liked the Paris part, didn't like the in the house ending part.

ShAmIE

And the only reason for that, in any film, is the direction. This is probably one of the two main reasons his movies are second rate. His ideas are superb; the direction and actual writing are unpolished. If he hired an intelligent director and a polished co-writer, he'd put out some future classics for sure.

"Unbreakable" rocked most muchly so I'm even more nervous that he's talking about a second film set in that same universe........

yeah from what I remember it was meant to be a trilogy, I'm glad he left it at that one film...as it was a good idea...just poorly done, and way way way to over stretched, one great scene of him actually using his "unbreakable" power, and then a twist that most people could see coming...but then Sixth Sense had that also, I am one of the people that could see the twist way before it was revealed...and no that is not a bragging point, it was the way the film was shot...(starts off with him being shot, then skips a few months or years, he seems to be perfectly fine, no mention of being shot...he can't open a door ;) and the main reason for most people guessing the ending was the Restaurant scene...I've had a look on some other forums discussing the film, and that seems to be the point of the film where people either see it or not. it was a decent film though...shame he couldn't have slightly changed a few scenes to mask the ending (mostly the restaurant scene)

anyway...I seem to have trailed off...

I like how obvious his stuff is, it makes you feel stupid for not seeing it the first time round, the restaurant seem imparticular was a dead giveaway but I didn't see that film for a couple of years after it came out so I had long known te ending before I saw it, which I'm sad about now coz it's one of my favourites, I thought "The Village" gave it away, I knew what was going on pretty early into that. I still loved it though and I love the style and mood in all his films, except of course Lady in the Water

Welcome to the wonderful world of video art, Horatio :p

Seriously, these films aren't supposed to be watched with the same state of mind as you'd watch a "normal" fiction film...
It's all about subtexts, amazing visuals, and really pushing the boundaries of the medium.

what part of LA you staying in? we stayed in the Crowne Plaza, shame it was in the Jewish part, as there were hardly any nearby shops...and we only had 3 days there ;)...plus after Vegas (which is an amazing place) it was kind of a let down...but going to Universal Studios made up for the part we were in, if you are going to Universal you must must must and that's must...go on the Simpsons ride which is brilliant, go as early as you can as que's are massive, and it's hot :D (which I didn't mind, but if you are going with anyone who does it will end up annoying you ;))

anyway, last film I saw was, How to Lose Friends and Alienate People...which wasn't very good at all...not even the mighty Pegg could save it, though a special mention must go out to two outstanding performances, and I'm not talking about Kirsten Dunst and Simon Pegg...I'm talking about Gillian Anderson's boobs :D wow...:D

yeah, LA you do need to plan where you are going, and when...plus we felt less safe in LA than we did in Las Vegas...maybe it's due to the sheer amount of people around (all the time) in Vegas, whereas in LA it's like a ghost town after about 8...at least it was in the part we were in...but as it was only a short time we were there it wasn't too bad.

anyway deer, have a lovely time, if you're going with Virgin Atlantic, they have a great personal digital TV, (depending on the aircraft, some of them are not digital and are on a loop system, still good but not as good as the digital one...as the tape quality is very poor...plus you can't watch what you want to watch when you want to watch it...plus the films haven't been cut, which is great)

I know some other flights have this aswell, but I know that Virgin definitely does.

Just watched The Other Boyelyn Girl. Seemed better in the theatre.

If you'd want to make this a comedy do this: Every scene with Mary and the other girl, no matter which one is telling her shit going on story, imagine the one listening simply replying, "You are sooo fucked." This can be done throughout the film, right up to their final duet.

Although, it's all worth it to get to the very last image before the credits start rolling.

O.K., specials features are a gem.

so in no way accurate or authentic...

2nd time trying to watch Talladega Nights...2nd time falling asleep through it...as it is completely unfunny...apart from the outtakes at the end which were pretty funny.

also Saw V (opening night last week) pretty decent follow on, much better than II and III, though Saw is still the best, and IV is the 2nd (or should that be II'nd ;)) in line with V being just behind IV...erm...ok I'm slightly lost...er...anyway SAW's in order of gory goodness SAW, SAW IV, SAW V, SAW...II and then III...though I'd have to watch them again and make sure it not III then II, but both have Shawnee Smith...so there both still watchable (if only for that reason :D)

is it wrong to think she still looks cute in a reverse bear trap?

I do hope V is the last one though...I don't really think they can sensibly do any more (5 films pushed it)

I think three films pushed it, honestly, but I was surprised at how well they kept trying really hard to make good films for the first four, although I still have yet to see five.

The last movie I watched was The Strangers, which was incredibly effective in scaring me.

the only thing that scared me about The Strangers was that it got made...oh and Liv Tyler's awful ...awful...AWFUL acting (as usual).

I did like the Three Strangers though...shame they were part of that film.

and on SAW, that's really why 2 and 3 aren't really that great...as they just seemed to be taking the idea of SAW and just making a plain gore fest without putting any depth into it...the gore was great...but it just needed more to back it up.

I like 4 and 5 due to the fact that they are in effect trying to tie the films together...and I think they pretty much succeeded.

I wanted to see king of kong, but found it was on just as the showing were finishing :(

I didn't think of ice storm as a black comedy but more as a commentary on 70's america, the ending was very depressing.

It was what brokeback wanted to be, but never quite reached. The only trouble I had with it, was forgetting who the kids(maguire and Wood I kept on getting mixed up in particular) belonged to, but I was watching it on 1.3 on my DVD recorder.

Kline at the end just made me so upset and I couldn't believe how young Katie Holmes' looked!

Ya know, I owned "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not", as well as Amelie(sp?), and neither is in my collection. If the bitch queer would have just asked, I most likely would have just given them to the bitch.

I watched it last night, having spotted it on Film4, and thought it was excellent. You're spot on, roelle - my first thought was Amelie meets One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. It's really sweet, but in an odd way, with some beautiful set pieces and some technically strange quirks. It's also quite touching in some places, especially the latter third or so.

I want to watch it again, so that's a good sign......

The Fall.

Not a documentary about the venerable Manchester indie band but an amazing epic fantasy about a Hollywood stuntman who weaves an extended magic tale for a little girl who's in hospital at the same time. Fantastical at first, the tale gets progressively darker, reflecting his own despair. A little like a cross between The Wizard of Oz and Pan's Labyrinth (althought there are no strange creatures).

It's beguiling, engrossing and moving. Visually stunning, too.

as beautiful as that Truman track you pointed out is, it wasn't the one. i found it, its not a Phillip Glass score. it was something called Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11: II. Romance-larghetto. one of three(?) pieces of music to appear with the rest of that score.

id add another track to that list of music:
Tarawa - James Newton Howard :)
