You want to look, yet you don't want to see what's happening.
The music is very very scary, yet it's one of the most beautiful things you've heard.
And Björk...
*sigh*
She looks so incredibly gorgeous, yet also incredibly "out of this world" - as if you're looking at someone from a different planet.
That's exactly it - as much as I was shocked I don't think I looked away once. I'd also agree that the Noh singing works so much better extended over that scene than the track on the cd, though now hearing it will make me think of this.....
Bjork always looks amazing but this really is something else, isn't it, and especially when she has her eyebrows shaved off. It was also a bit odd seeing a naked Bjork in the lemon bath. I was almost embarrassed :p
I'm glad you posted that as I wanted to see of it was just me feeling like that - seems not. Stunning film but as the storm hits it certainly goes from beauty to horror and later back to a final beauty again.

I've read more reviews about this film, and it seems that either they respond to it the way we do (as seeing the beauty of it, even though sometimes you're being incredibly tested by Mr.Barney), others just slag it off completely!
I agree completely on the "embarrassed"-thing, I felt exactly the same.:o

I just made the mistake of going off to find reviews and found this excellent trailer:-
http://www.ifcfilms.com/viewFilm.htm?filmId=162
I'd have thought condensing the best part of those two and a half hours into a trailer would be impossible but having watched it I know feel a bit wobbly again. Really brings it all back!

03-08-2008, 10:38
Thanks for that, Carpy!
I haven't seen the film since, but I still remember all of it very vividly! I don't think I've ever watched a film so closely as this one. Also, after the screening (it was in this small theatre at the museum), there was this incredibly defeaning silence that seemed to last forever. Then some guy said "Wow, what the bloody hell was that ?" (roughly translated from Flemmish) and that summed up pretty much everyone's feelings.
The wobbly feelings will stay with you for atleast a week! (And listening to Björk will conjure some rather "interesting" images ;))
The look of the film intrigues me, but i hate Bjork, the soundtrack of the trailer made me want to stop watching.
Ooh.La.Lisa
03-08-2008, 10:46
Well, I wouldn't watch it if you don't like the music, as it's pretty important for the film. And definitely not if you hate Björk (why do you ?)
I dunno, i've just never seen her appeal, her voice just puts me off too much.
Ooh.La.Lisa
03-08-2008, 10:52
Well, if you'd ever be in the mood to see something extremely exceptional and you're willing to put your music taste aside, please do not hesitate!
If that was instrumental, i think i'd like it a lot more, her voice just seemed to be there for the sake of it being there without really adding anything, in fact for me it just detracted from it cause i don't like her :p But like i say, the visual element intrigued me, i might have to check it out at some point.

Oh,and on a less "gloomy" note, I enjoyed Bridget Jones' Diary waaaaaay too much yesterday.
I love that movie, and the second one.

So I haven't seen the second one, either!
It's good, i'd recommend it if you liked the first :D
Matthew Barney
Now i remember where i've heard that name before! A website where i bought a bunch of workprints also offered some weird and obscure films, and there was an offer for 5 of his films, Cremaster series? I remember seeing the picture and thinking "weird" then reading the descriptions and thinking "weirder".
Ooh.La.Lisa

Good work, rewak. If it's the avi version from Greylodge then you'll need to adjust it to 16x9 when watched. I'd also say to set aside the time for it and watch it all in one go without stopping or skipping. It'll be tough but very well worth it!
It's from a torrent, i dunno if thats where it came from (1.38gb). Having to adjust it is no problem though, BSPlayer can do that on the fly.

I've saw the making of Drawing Restraint some weeks ago and that scene was much easier when watching it in the context of a documentary! It was actually quite funny, I thought.
I saw This is England, last night. How incredibly and disturbingly sad. I must admit though that some of the accents were hard to understand, but I think you get the jist of the film pretty easily. :(

Shane Meadows rocks, doesn't he. I'd agree though, for all the funny bits it's a tough watch overall because it's so true to life....

Carpy, the bald guy (I couldn't catch his name) what did he do to go to jail? Also, how does an 11 year old boy "date" a girl that seems like she's 17? I thought that was a bit bizarre and sort of cringe worthy ick.
I was yelling at milky towards the end "Don't go with that arsehole, NOOOOOO, he's going to hurt you!" :(
Stephanie
03-08-2008, 13:27
Also, I assume the Falklands War was pretty controversial at the time. How many people in the UK actually supported it?

Also, how does an 11 year old boy "date" a girl that seems like she's 17? I thought that was a bit bizarre and sort of cringe worthy ick.
I've wondered about that too. I think she was a touch younger than she seemed - the hair and make up adds height/age - but I think it's a lot more about her complete lack of self confidence and self worth (probably why she hung around with that crowd) and partly about the young lads bravado and desire to be older (like the dad he lost)
I was yelling at milky towards the end "Don't go with that arsehole, NOOOOOO, he's going to hurt you!" :(
That scene was awful - just waiting for him to snap once he's started asking Milky all the leading questions....
Also, I assume the Falklands War was pretty controversial at the time. How many people in the UK actually supported it?
It still is to this day - the desire to protect your turf, compared with the fact it's so far away etc. To be honest, most peoples memory is how the Conservative Party rode on the back of a 'war' to boost national pride and therefore their own standing. Maggie milked every item of news she could from that to help deflect the fact she'd screwed this country and discontent was already growing.
Stephanie
03-08-2008, 13:56
I actually didn't think that crowd was soo bad (before Mr. Racist showed up). They seemed like the typical skins at that time, true sort of Rudeboys you know the whole two tone scene. You sort of wonder how that scene turned into the skinheads of today as it's a complete 180.
I truly thought Milky was dead, but then Shaun's mum said something at the end to fact of "Milky will be okay..."
The funny thing is when Thatcher came to power I actually looked up to her. I remember thinking wow, a woman Prime Minister of the UK...how cool is that. I was young and living in a different country, what the hell did I know at the time :o
He sounded pretty damn out there, and doing a little reading he never releases his movies onto DVD
One of his shorter pieces is featured on the DVD "Destricted" -
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0492962/
Again, his contribution is a strange, meditative, visually captivating if repelling, and very different from everyone else.
The other films are worth watching too.
Just came from the theater and tolerated watching "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor".
Review: Cliche, corny, and should've been straight to DVD release.
Tomorrow I'll be watching another sold out showing of The Dark Knight on IMAX.

Metropolis (animation)
Personnal review: visually stunning and good futuristic adaptation of the myth of Babel (which is cited many times) but the story is sometimes difficult to understand as the complexity of Metropolis isn't explained in the very beginning. Really good though
Watched the first 20 minutes or so of that Drawing Restraint 9 film and switched it off, wasn't paying much attention really, took me an hour or so to watch 20 minutes cause i was always pausing it and doing other things. Best thing to do - it's the cumulative effect of watching it in one hit that makes the impact all the better. You get dragged into it and don't realise how intently you're watching it. Like Lisa said, because there is basically no dialogue you really hang off everything that moves and your eyes get locked in. You don't notice how slow it is after a while and it just seems really intriguing.
Worth the effort even though my head is still a bit scrambled from it this morning, a few days on !

And after all, it's vacation, so it's the perfect time for silly movies. I sometimes even dig up an old Disney movie, like 'The Little Mermaid' or 'Beauty and the Beast'. :o
But we'll pretend I never said that. :D

'The Little Mermaid' is still my favourite though. <3 The adrenaline near the end: will she reach the boat in time to declare her love to Eric? Will her father work his magic fallusfork to make her become human?

It really is a gorgeous film and I love the fact that you have the tour documentary on one disc and the live tracks in full on the other so you can decide what side of it you want to concentrate on.

It's really nice - each picture is kinda embossed onto the page so it even feels like a photo album and the pictures are those actually taken by the band during the tour around the country. If you've already got the rest you'd have to really want the book to grab it again though !
Watched The Dark Knight on IMAX last night.
A couple things I noticed... The Nolan brothers knew how to weave three villains and make them relevant to the story. [Spoiler] Nice closure for Scarecrow.
I love Batman's toys - especially the Batcycle.
I really liked it. Better than most of the movies I've seen this Summer so far (which has seen a slate of lackluster films of late).
What I liked about Nolan's version of the Batman franchise is that its more akin to the graphic novel versions (http://comics.ign.com/articles/624/624619p5.html) of Batman -- the darker more insane stories.
Simon Dark (http://www.steveniles.com/gallery/Simon-Dark) anyone? :)

Re-watched Starship Troopers on our big screen last night and Vacancy the night before.
I loved the new X-Files movie! I thought they made a smart move bringing it back as a horror rather than mythology, and even smarter making it horror and not "in your face gross you out gore"
And the last movie i watched was Trainspotting, in 10 minutes, i just flicked through it and watched little bits. The monologue from that film is still the best, and the sinking into the carpet scene, best POV ever.

Frrreaky.
So it started out really good, but then it slowed down too much I thought ... Not that it really mattered though cause you just keep on watching till the end anyway, if only to

* see if your own explanations for the events were right or not.
La Reine Margot

I love that film (and not just because of IA) - gripping story, quality directing and class actors.
As for the X Files movie, I was a bit disappointed with it. I didn't mind that they didn't continue with the alien invasion mythology (I think Chris Carter lost sight of where that storyline was going around series 6). The film is underwhelming on the whole and the fact that there's only 1 bad guy in the secret lab rather diminishes the sense of peril. Still, at least we know what has happened to Mulder and Scully. I doubt we'll see them again.

Do you remember Langly (one of the Lone Gunmen?) The actor who played him (Dean Haglund) is doing a show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe called "X Files Improv". He takes suggestions from the audience and improvises a show around these, with lots of audience participation. It's absolutely hilarious and the guy is fantastic - incredibly quick witted. I actually saw him at last year's festival where we collectively solved the mystery of the marshmallow-eating monster from the deep.:)
Oh. my. gosh... that sounds brill! never heard of that at all...... though ive been to the fest a few times and would enjoy it greatly! thanks for the heads up!! x

Excited !
film4 has the Dario Argento classic of Italian horror cinema, "Suspiria" on tonight ! Possibly the most vivid use of colour, focus and set pieces ever. Alongside "Deep Red" & "Tenebrae" they are easily my favourite Argento ones.

It's quite gruesome in a few places but always very inventive. It's the sheer POW of the colour used that is amazing though - it's like everything has been coloured using Skittles at times :D

Watched Planet Terror last ngiht and really enjoyed it. Rose McGowan in the opening sequence -
Even with a wooden table leg as one of her legs she looked pretty damn good! And her performance was a million light years away from when I remember first seeing her in Scream years ago (took me a while to clock where I remembered her from) and I just found out she's going to be playing Red Sonja in the remake from Rodriquez next year...which sounds promising/hot.
Really liked the woman who played the doctor wife character too (can't recall her name) who I don't think I've ever seen before...
Also watched Shrooms, which - asides from some nice (ish) scenery here and there, was fucking terrible.

It's outrageously  ! There's one bit with a close up of her waist/hips/tops of legs as she's swaying side to side (in a ridiculously sexy fashion) forcing the sections of her skirt-thing to jump all over the place in slow motion and it just nearly killed me.
I gulped and whispered/mouthed 'wow' and was quickly reprimanded for being too vocal in my appreciation

one of the problems is that you can have one german voice for different actors...you know, for example you watch films with john travolta, he is always dubbed by the same voice, and suddenly there's "die hard with a vengeance" - and bruce willis got the voice of travolta!!

or, a similar problem - you get used to the german voice for years,

Just watched "Wake Up, Ron Burgundy", the 'lost movie' that fits alongside "Anchorman".
Loved the first one and loved this too. It was maybe only 89.72% as funny as the original but considering it was mostly put together from unused scenes & dropped story arcs it was pretty damn good. Brick still rocks, that's for sure. It also comes with a copy of Ron Burgundy's journal titled "The Many Months of Ron Burgundy" which a great mini-read so that's a WHAMMY! for sure.

Yeah, they just dive straight into the second part with no recap at all and the story is VERY tightly linked to it as well. The ending would therefore make no sense at all to you as you have to know the start of the first one to get any idea what's going on :D
Well, me and my friend saw a trailer for it when we watched Die Another Day (after all the music acts have finished the Punk tent becomes a film tent until 3am) and so we thought it looked rather cool, slightly Matrix-y what with the bus colliding with some dude, so we watched it.

I've just finished Forbidden Planet and it was just amazing - 52 years old and yet it looked immaculate. Really sharp and perfect colour, clear and deep sound. For the time it was made I'd say that the scenes inside the Krell machine were probably better (for the tech of the time) than we do now - the scale it gives is quite, quite extraordinary.

Wonderful off-it's-head synth rock from Goblin, scenes that appear for no real reason (killer robot doll anybody?), uber-gruesome deaths filmed in poor-effect-O-vision and dialogue that's about as natural as a bag of Skittles. In Argento's case, though, these are the things that make it a winner.
Any other Argento fans on here?

Watched Marie Antoinette again last night (while eating matching pink pastry and all!).
Either way it was still as beautiful as it was the first time, even after reading 500 pages on MA's real life and knowing the whole truth now ... I still disagree with most of the criticism!

Pink pastry ?!
How wonderful!
What was it ?

It was like a little present you had to unfold ... Basically it consisted of a light cake on top of a layer of strawberry jam and a cookie. This was wrapped up very nicely in a pink coat of marzipan. Last but not least, they had placed a little knot of crème-au-beurre on top of the marzipan coating.
De-li-cious! :D

*gasps for breath*
That sounds sooooooooooooooooooo good - and very Marie Antoinette!
Did you get it from someone, or went out to buy it yourself especially for the film!?

My dad bought four little pastries yesterday, one for each member of the family: two 'merveilleusses' (don't know the real name, nor what it is exactly, but that's how they call it in Lembeek City :p) and two pink pressies. I thought it was quite fitting to eat while watching MA, which I wanted to see again anyway after finishing the biography, so ... It all fell into place!
BTW: It was sooooooooooooooooooo good indeed, gna gna. :D

Speaking of which, I took a picture of it in order to somehow use it on my blog, but my idea with it wasn't strong enough so I ditched it ... It's quite the job, blogging! :p Either way, this is what it looked like:

Day Watch (Дневно́й дозо́р, Dnevnoi Dozor)
16814
Did I understand it all? Nope. Crazy and over-the-top as ever.
Is it as good as "Night Watch"? Oh yeah, certainly!
Do I want to see the third part of the trilogy? Very much indeed !
Spoiler: The apocalypse of Moscow, mostly caused by the ever splitting bullets that come from the bouncy ball toy used by Yegor, is incredible - what a weapon of destruction, especially when they slow and start firing back where they came from in even greater numbers. Carnage!
I have to say I found Night Watch much better - didn't quite enjoy day watch as much - but then Night Watch COMPLETELY blew me away as I wasn't expecting anything like that - sci-fi with an arthouse edge - NICE!
Totally agree on your comments on Forbidden Planet btw - I love that film so much - had no idea the robot had his own film as well though!

True indeed - I think having no knowledge of the universe in the first one made it even more interesting and unusual. They made more use of trips into the Gloom too. Second one's still good though, even if not as unusual after seeing the first one.

I think Argento is a genius, I've watched all of the mother's trilogy, but I've never had the chance to watch these three.
I first watched Suspiria when I was 10, and shall we say: it fucked me up for life but I loved it.
Killer robot doll??WTF?

^^ Roll on, Keira-adoration; the more the merrier!
Ah, I can't wait for those two Keiramovies to come out in Belgium ... Apparently they're both brilliant!
I went down the cheesy lane today, and watched an Austrian film about a very iconic empress.
... That's right, it was Sissi-time! :D
Well, actually they're more the kind of movies to watch during the Christmas season and all, but what the heck. Yeh.

Eek, I feel so stupid, especially since I used to have this unhealthy obsession with everything Sissi (real and movie) when I was younger, lol (though not in 'Man bijt Hond' kinda way)! :p
But well, they spóke German. So. Yeah. Hmm.

I saw ''Blade Runner'' yesterday. It was amazing to see one of the best s-f movies on the big screen, some of the scenes were a lot more thrilling and powerful.

Where did you get to see it on the big screen ? I remember seeing the Director's Cut when it first got (re) released at the Odeon Leicester Square and it was an amazingly huge screen and the sound ...... wow.
