American Gangster
summed up in two words AWFUL FILM
so many people told me it was an amazing film, it's really good yeah go see it... it's 2 hours and 40 minutes of utter shite with about 10 minutes of that being watchable, the raid scene is shot so badly it actually hurts your eyes, there's a scene where Denzel Washington is talking to a cop, the cop face is easily visible but when it cuts back to Denzel his half of his face is behind the cop head...which either suggests that the Director wanted it that way...or they completely fucked it up...I'm thinking it's the latter of the two. it starts off with a guy being ****** and then there doesn't seem to be any mention of him again??? there's a guy in it that looks like they couldn't get Robert De Niro, so they got someone who can do an impression of him ;)
oh and Russell Crowe's Aussie acent comes out a few times...when he's meant to be American (at least that's what I think he's meant to be )
and for god's sake where in the hell did they get the woman playing Denzel's mother??? shit I could have played that role better then she did...and I'm not an old black woman...I'm a fat white man ;)
yeesh...oh god just too many things to say about this film that's not good at all...it could have been 1 hour and 30 minutes long and been a pretty good film...but the over stretching and just down right awful acting in places meh...that's it...I can't say any more...
(I'll be careful...there's a few Blade Runner fans on here :D)
(I won't spoil it for you ;)) but 8.3 on IMDB is just wrong...

See this 1-18-08 thing, it looks cool but i think it will fail, because it's already built itself too high. Whatever they do in the end, people will say it sucks. Here are my 3 predictions
1-It is just a King Kong rip-off
2-The world is imploding into itself because of all the sin, or some shit like that
3-The main guy is a drug addict and this is all some serious trip, representing how his world is caving in and how he's losing all his friends
They all suck don't they?

A drink is a major part in it? Then the drink is made from something mined from underground and its been mined so much the city is collapsing in on itself. Either that or the drinks mascot has come alive and is terrorising the city. Or it's made from people and the corporation is scooping up everyone and making them into Slusho.

yeah yeah i'm still alive! Livin on this great peniche (dutch barge) on a fantastic moorin at Tower Bridge .. look outta my porthole and there's the Bridge and the Tower of London .. Canary Wharf ,,, looks so so pretty at night .. great place to be .. I'm resident in Starbucks on Shad Thames where I'm writin my new series of text based work
and then there's the film editing and soundtrack .. life is sweet!
"Once".
Probably my film of the year. An Irish film about a street busker (male) who meets a Czech woman trying to eke out a living in Dublin but who also plays piano, sings and composes her own songs.
Needless to say, a sort of relationship develops but the bulk of the film centres around the music they make and how it articulates what's been going on their lives. There are lots of really good, poignant, songs interwoven in to the narrative
and the whole thing is just a moving and delightfully understated joy.
Highly recommended.

made the mistake of going to see SHROOMS :( (even thought I knew it was going to be shit...it wasn't my choice of film...plus there wasn't anything else on) as soon as it started I just knew it was going to be bad...but how bad...god no...I don't think anyone could see that coming...think how shit you think it will be...and multiply that by the amount of money you just spent in the foyer ;)...anyway, there was one good thing about the film and that was the main actress (I just kept thinking, you really chose the wrong film to be in here, and you are actually pretty good with the shit material you have to work with...as for the rest of the cast...Irish Hillbillies hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm and the "cloaked hood" (that what I'm calling it anyway, was just not scary at all...I had to keep hitting my mate as the only thing you could here in the cinema was him snoring in all the silent bits...(which was actually quite funny) but the worst thing was the fact that I could here a few people behind me actually discussing the plot...and seeming to actually enjoy the film
there was a nice part thrown in for all us bored viewers and boob lovers alike (obviously shot as they knew how shit the film was, and needed a "good point") :D and she's got a great porn star name to Lindsey Haun :D

HITMAN - :( while most of the action sequences were pretty good, the acting lets it all down. And I say most as a few were made slightly silly and downright stupid...(the Agents Samurai fight ;)...though some of that was actually ok) there was also a part that just made me think "why?...why did you do that?" (hint there are two kids in front of a tv...;)) but the biggest downfall of the film has got to be Dougray Scott (and some other actors) who clearly did not read their lines before the day of each shoot...seriously how badly can one person act? I've never thought he was a great actor...but I thought he was better than he was in this...I'll give you an example...Henry Ian Cusick (plays Desmond in Lost) is believable as a Russian and does a pretty decent job in his role...Dougray...not even having to put on an accent...just...ahh balls to it he's shit...(but he's not the only one) Timothy Olyphant...hmm...not the best of actors in the world...and this doesn't change that...not sure what it is about him...
favourite line in the film if it were a comedy "They've found Him!!!!!!" Dougray Scott to Michael Offei holding his face ;)
and I wanted it to be good :(

You're going to have to civilise her. Maybe you should make her see Funny Girl first. My Fair Lady is a better film - but much longer (about two hours and three quarters). It may be a challenge to make Kelly sit still for that long. :o

the bit when she is in the car is a dream, you see her get out of the cave, in the car driving away and doesn't she turn around to see...a mutant or a dead friend or something ghost like? I can't remember and then it goes back to her being in the cave and dying!
Unless you watched the American edit of it, in America they gave it a happier ending, she didn't die in the end.

The descent is good until they actually start dying... then it gets really crap. The monsters in it are like some resurrection of gollum or something. The bit at the end, she looks in the back of the car and there's that gollum thing and then you see her back in the cave and she's quite clearly gone mad because she's seeing all these images of being in the car etc and actually believes she's there. Do they actually show her dying though? I thought it just ended like that.. I can't remember, it was ages ago that I watched it!

I bought the Blade Runner Final Cut 5 DVD set, which cut to watch?
Mine came this morning! Which 'moving clip' did you get? Mine was Harrison walking through a door and raising his gun.
The main three that are most different (and therefore ALL worth a watch) are the new "Final Cut", 1992 Directors Cut (no voiceover) and one of the 1982 theatrical cuts (with the voiceover). Once you've seen those go for the "workprint" which is the real Holy Grail to BR fans......
I'd say go with "Final Cut" first as it's pretty spanking.

My moving clip was the same. I've seen the Directors Cut, so probably go with the Final Cut first, then work my way through the others.

which version did people get? and how much did they pay for it? (I know the R1 version is £60 with the briefcase and all that...and the blu ray is only £10-£20 more)
but I'm not sure I want to pay that much for a film I don't really love...I saw the other day how cheap the UK version is on HMV £17.99  (I know it doesn't have the briefcase) but still, that's quite a drop for 5 dvd's.
hmm still not sure about getting it yet though...as I recently saw how many HMV have in stock in their stores...pily'd high...
maybe I'll break...maybe I won't ;)

The descent is good until they actually start dying... then it gets really crap.
I'd agree with that! :D
But if she's gone mad at the end - and we're seeing her delusions - how could we tell which (if any of them) is real - or even approaching reality?

Did you really think I wouldn't?! I mean, it's Blade Runner - I need no other excuse :p
I've dropped out at the end of the set building and before production starts - I'll watch the rest tomorrow. Just too tired with still being a bit ill.
So much amazing stuff in it, though. Really quite info rich rather than the dry sort of thing you get on other films. Here's three examples - Rutger Hauer added the "like tears in rain" bit to the end of Batty's speech, Daryl Hannah came up with the Pris look herself and Edward James Olmos invented the 'Cityspeak' !
Oh, and even the DVD menus move like an ESPER machine :D

It is visually stunning, well the violence was very realistic. It didnt look like tomato sauce it looked like people were really getting hurt. The story was very gripping too. I didnt expect it to be that good...i guess thats the reason ive only just seen it.

I was practically forced to watch Hairspray and Diehard 4 on a plane yesterday. Both were pretty crap in equal measure, but Hairspray at least had some singing and some sort of underlying message attached. And I did like the girl.
But John Travolta as a woman was just too disturbing for me to enjoy. He looked like he enjoyed way too much and all I could imagine was him skipping around his mansion doing the housework in a maids outfit and ill-applied lipstick. Yuck.

I AM LEGEND (or I AM LEG END ;))
big big BIG let down, the Dark Seekers look like I ROBOT ...er...robots...which isn't what I was expecting...I thought for a big film like this it was going to be REAL people not CGI :( which really does ruin the overall feel that the first half of the film builds up.
there are some parts where you are cringing (because of the lack of other actors, which are replaced by mannequins ;)) though that feeling does go away after a few minutes (as it shows he's been there for a while) it all just seems to fall apart after the initial build up (the Dark Seekers sleeping in the dark standing together as he looks around with the torch made me think the film WAS going to be great...shame :()

I just bought Paprika yesterday.. it's really good. It's directed by the guy who worked on Perfect Blue and Paranoia Agent. The animation is actually very similiar to Spirited Away.. but really perverse and twisted. It's odd, there's parts that are really warm, and then parts that show you how twisted humans really can be.
I love the themes.. it has things split up into reality and dream.. but then merging of dream and internet into this weird fantasy that somehow eventually leaks into reality.

You know that feeling in a movie, when it's obvious that something scary is going to happen (ex. a dead body will pop out from the loo or something), and you're prepared for that to happen so it won't scare the shit out of you, and then when it finally happens it still scares the shit out of you? Ey?
It happened to me 3 times while watching S-M3, good heavens. And it wasn't even a horrormovie, lol!
Still, it was nice for an actionmovie, loved the special effects and all, ex. the Sandman.

Yes! Thomas Newman's music is gorgeous!
I'll be watching "Spice World" tonight.
At our New Years Eve Party, a friend of mine brought the Spice Girls album, so ofcourse I had to listen to it. The nostalgia:eek:! Seriously, this record was released when I was 8, so I couldn't believe that I still know most of the lyrics! And I couldn't even speak proper english back then! Anyway, it also made me realize what a great band the Spice Girls actually were, so that's why I've decided to restart my Spice Girls admiration by watching the movie!

Can't be any worse than the sequel! Yikes!

Watched it while lying on a sofa while people around me either passed out or vomited in the garden. Good times!

Haven't actually seen it, no real desire to cause everyone i know that has seen it has said just that, it's awful.

The building wasn't on fire though, so that's irrelevant. If people want to go and introduce the garden to their last 10 drinks then they don't really need my assistance. Besides, once I'd sat down I didn't get off that sofa for about 8 hours because I was that wasted so it's not like I could have done much anyway.

I watched loads of films over chrismtas (the usual disney... nemo/monsters inc etc) a bit of gone with the wind, watched Debs, that I got Kelly for christmas, which was insane and so cheesy but hilarious none the less.
Watched Sherry Baby last night... it was most disturbing, I had no idea what it was about when I sat down and starting viewing so I was open minded about it.. at first I had no idea what was going on, and what the point of the film actually was.... it was a little bit 'rough around the edges' for my liking... and I nearly vomited when she was alone with her dad at her daughters birthday party... just made me feel sick all over. Bleurgh. Then it ended and it wasn't until that point that I realised what it was all about (I'm trying not to give too much away for those who've not seen it and want to!)
Kelly got the Illusionist and I got Central Station for christmas so I think we'll watch those soon.
Yeah.. I thought Shock Treatment was AWFUL.
oh god, I bought it because for some reason it was cheaper to buy the boxset of that and Rocky Horror then RH on its own, watched it once, never ever again.
Watched the new version of Pride and Prej on TV earlier, thought I would gave it another chance - still shite

I watched The Fantastic Four last night, mainly because I like Jessica Alba. As superhero films go, it seemed very slow to get to the action.
My DVD per night for the holiday season ends tonight. In recent days I've been watching:
Pitch Black (a decent sci-fi film)
Amores Perros (not a film to watch if you're not feeling too well , nor if you like dogs)
Twin Town (a British film, made in Wales, and contender for the worst film I've ever seen)
I'm Not Scared (an Italian Film about a kid who befriends a kidnap victim - v.good)
Bob Le Flambeur. (The original French film later remade as The Good Thief).
I eventually managed to see I am Legend at the cinema. Not bad at all. Will Smith gets to do more than his usual wise-cracking, cool, effortlessly heroic main character. The early parts of the film, set in a deserted New York, are stunning too. It reminded me of 28 Days Later, but I gather that this was heavily influenced by the source book for I am Legend, anyway.
Tomorrow, when I'm at work, I'll probably be thinking of films I'd rather be watching.:(

The guy at Focus even pissed me off that much that I wrote an agry letter and they published it in the next edition. I was so happy :D:D
Really? Hahaha, that's great! :D Even moreso as it even got published ... Did they have a reply too?
And that guy at Focus hates all the films, grrr, except when they're really weird, ex. about some Japanese guy who goes out hunting for flying shoes and ends up eating worms and turning into a butterfly. Or something.
I once intended to write an angry letter to Focus Knack too, when the music guy completely trashed Madge's COADF. I didn't do it eventually, and looking back at it that was wise, cause they were a bit right in the end  :o

Oh! You should totally do that! Writing angry letters are a great way of dealing with frustration AND showing those smug bastards that their opinion is not God's opinion or whatever! But it's true the thing they like are always extremel violent, extremely weird or just made by "respected" artists. I finally saw Control and you'd never believe where......on my Virgin Atlantic flight back to the States. I procrastinated so much that I missed it in the theaters so I'm glad I finally got a chance to see it, albeit on something like a 7" screen.
I absolutely loved the high contrast b&w and the cinematography but for someone who knew the basic story-line of the film, I must admit I was a bit disappointed with it. The acting was great but all the characters just felt so distant, so impersonal to me. At the end I still felt like I didn't know any of the them well enough to feel true empathy. On top of all of it Ian Curtis seemed like a real self consumed arse to me......okay a very TALENTED self consumed arse.

Not bad. An engaging and well told story but lacking the emotional punch that it should have had. I can't help thinking that there are parallels with the film "Atonement" which was much more affecting. Julie Delpy & Adam Goldberg.
Had no pre-conceptions about this, other than the DVD cover, as it was a film going round work and I just thought it would be worth a watch. I guessed, looking at the pic, that it was going to be a sometimes silly run of the mill Ameri-rom-com film but I was pleasantly wrong. It's clever, acted very straight and at times quite dark. There's humour in it, sure, but in a very battling way and you kinda laugh at the same time as cringe a little.
Very rewarding and, at the end, I must have got something in my eye. Honest.

On Saturday night I watched the international theatrical cut of Blade Runner.
I've been wondering, since watching Blade Runner a few nights ago, why they set it in 2019. Most GMBers should live that long and will know (eventually) what 2019 is really going to be like. The date seems far too early for some of the stuff in Blade Runner. If there are ever to be off world colonies of humans, for instance, it will be way after 2019. perhaps they should have made the date 2119 or 2219.

If you imagine the film came out in 1982, and must therefore have been worked on before that with the original story written even earlier, then 2019 must have seemed a long way into the future at the time. We're heading for it fast now so we have a whole different insight on what it's more liable to be.
Peter Jeffery
08-01-2008, 18:54
In 1982, 2019 was only 37 years away. Many people who queued in the snow to see Blade Runner when it was first released were likely to live longer than that. It's like the science fiction stories written in the 1930s and set in the 1960s. If you want the verisimilitude of an actual date, why use one in the current reckoning? I get round it rather neatly (if I do say so myself) by starting my novel in Year 724 of the Surrey Democracy. There's no clue as to how far in the future that is - but it's got to be more than 724 years.
that made me remember about a cartoon who started with something like "In 1997 (I think or something like that" the world was destroyed.... blah blah blah" and I always wondered they should use a further future to be sure. It was one of those cartoons of the 70's about bizarre superheroes, from Hannah-Barbera, I think.
