Yeah Jodie foster was the daughter in it! I used to love that film when I was little... I've got the remade version but just for the lohan factor. An ex bought me the remade parent trap because it has lindsay lohan in but she's about 3 and it just makes it all faaaaaaar too wrong!

Alien Vs Predator. Again. The extended version. It was crap the first time so why watch it a second time for longer?!? I've a barrowload of DVDs I've never seen and I watch this again. I need my head testing....

AvsP was a great spin off film (even though it was directed by that numnut Anderson)
I must admit before seeing it I was very against the idea of a film based on a game based on two different films....er....I think I said that right.
and the 2nd in the series looks pretty good too (though you may not want to watch it as you didn't like the first) might be good just to see the Alien Predator cross breed though :D.

Just got back from seeing "Control".
If you have ever loved somebody don't go and see it.
If you've ever lost somebody don't go and see it.
If you let films get to you then don't go and see it.
Left the cinema in a complete haze - the last hour or so saw total and complete silence in the cinema. I've never heard such complete lack of noise in one, like people had all held their breath. Heard some crying sniffles around the time of that happening and everybody walked out without a single murmur. Fucking unreal.
A beautifully shot, amazingly acted, achingly bleak piece of glorious cinema.

It's shot wonderfully - really on the money. For his first full length it's amazing how well he's nailed it.
Do go and see it, though, as it's excellent. Just a very tough watch, that's all.

In that case I'll wait when I need an emotional cathartic explosion. These movies are good ONLY for those cases, by the contrary, it could induce the effect of making me very very sad when I have no reason to be. Thanks for the warning.

Oddly enough, there are some dotted through - those "band and manager" exchanges that you just couldn't make up. Also the earliest use of the phrase "knob cheese" in a film ever.
The fact that they got the music right really helped too. That could have been a weak point but the actors did a fantastic job learning to play the songs and, of course, investing it with something of the dark intensity that Joy Division had.
Just got back from seeing "Control".
I was really disappointed... Ok the actors were really good.... Ok there were some nice shots, but... Shooting in black and white does not make a film beautiful to me. Had it been in colours, it would have looked like a regular TV movie... Now it looks like a TV movie in black and white...
And in my opinion, there have been soooo many movies about tormented artists, that I just cannot see how this one stands out...
If you're a fan of Joy Division's or you're interested in that band, ok... but still...!
I'm not saying it's a bad movie, but just a movie with facts only...
edit: oh, and I realised afterwards that Anton Corbijn did that movie, which made me go "hu...? why? he could have done so much better!"

I watched ultraviolet in a spare 90 minutes last night. Seriously, what the deuce?! It wasn't until the very very end that I actually realised what was going on (in fairness I missed the 5th-10th minutes because I was dishing up apple crumble and custard but I dont think it would've helped massively!) Even the fight scenes could've been a lot better. That little boy was so annoying, I wanted to terminate him myself!
Cool sunglasses though!

I blame the studio for massacring it, if the original edit had been released it would probably have been a lot better. And i liked it, it's the kind of thing you can just throw on and watch without actually having to think about anything. Kinda the same deal with Aeon Flux really.
mmm... I had thought about seeing Ultraviolet... well, maybe I just won't spend my money and wait until they show it on TV, and I'll keep the bad-movie warning too.
I liked Aeon Flux :( I think it has a lot of pure science fiction things and I found it kind of interesting. Well, maybe if the photography was more similar to a comic (like Sin city, e.g.) it would look great.
I liked Aeon Flux too, but it was also massacred by the movie studio (30 minutes cut from both Ultraviolet and Aeon by the studios) which was a real shame because it got panned by critics because of it!

I think it had great potential, the story was there but they just didn't execute it very well, considering they took 90 minutes to tell the start of the story the whole thing seemed to be over in a matter of seconds, they wasted the time of what was on screen, it had so much more to offer, it just never did.
Aeon Flux and Ultraviolet are two good examples of style over substance. Aeon Flux teeters over the line marked 'hollow' while Ultraviolet simply smothers it self in vapidity. Another dystopian film from 'round that time, Equilibrium, has has a weak ending but looks good on a budget that one suspects was a fraction of the two aforementioned movies. It also has a little bit of heart which seems to be missing from missing from Aeon and Ultra. Equilibrium is not a brilliant film but it's good enough.
Which reminds me, I may watch American Psycho for the first time tonight.....

Edgeplay - a film about The Runaways - last night. Worth watching, I'd say, although it's a pity that Joan Jett didn't cooperate in the making of the fim.
The Counterfeiters.
A German film, based on a true story about a group of concentration camp prisoners in 1944-5 who were forced in to getting involved in a scheme to forge UK and US banknotes on a massive scale.
Sounds grim, and it is at times, but it's also a gripping thriller in many respects and very moving. Highly recommended.

Aside from Cate's performance and a few moments of cinematic prettyness, it was kind of a dud. It was mostly just the weak script that irked me. And Clive Owen's idiotic, grinning performance.

...as Mark Kermode would say in his usually dull voice "it's not a zombie film...blah blah blah...no subtitles blah blah blah" ;)
(you really want to smack people like that really don't you...I know I do :D)
yes ok it's not a zombie movie in the usual style (i.e. the dead rise) but (and this is the BUT I like to throw in there) it IS a zombie movie...in the sense that the people that have been infected have no control over what they are doing...and the fact that they act like zombies (just a little bit faster....ok a lot faster :))
I preferred "weeks" much better than "days" which seemed like 2 completely different films....first half pretty good...second half terrible. "Weeks" felt much more like a complete film. (and let's not forget that chopper scene :D)

In a bit of a no brain mood last night, I watched "Bring It On All or Nothing" - the third in the "Bring It On" series. While not as good as the original film, it's a great deal better than the first sequel. And it's nice to see Hayden Panettiere actually doing some cheerleading. Self-regeneration is all very well, but "Heroes" hasn't allowed us to see much of her cheerleading skills.
I watched this last night!! It was absolutely hilarious!! Such a bad film mind but a MILLION times better than Bring it on Again! Hayden Panettiere was great in it once you got over her not being clare bennett... perfect film for last night when I was absolutely shattered and just wanted to watch something I didn't have to concentrate on... at all!!

Oh yes - it does have Goldfrapp on the soundtrack. If I remember correctly, the Frapp are playing during the film's sexiest moment - when they almost (but not quite) kiss. I think that there's something very sexy about the moment when a first kiss may or may not be about to happen. :) :)

Haaaaa, I've seen this scenario in a 'Cracker' episode on the Hillsborough tragedy. His diagnosis on the Killer was he wasn't sensitive like the Killer thought he was as he liked animals, he was sentimental.
Nothing wrong with being sentimental is there? just stop killing all those people. :p

German film about Stasi spying on artists in the cold war - ok sounds a bit wank but it's brilliant! The guy listening in to their bugs really gets obbsessed by their lives (in a way that reminded me of RedRoad)

it's loosely based on Ed Gein (Or rather Leatherface is based on him...the story is mostly fiction though...you can breath now)
but yeah The Sheriff is meant to be the horrible one, (I found him funny and sarcastic which is why I liked him)
Leatherface is meant to be a child in a man's...scratch that....a giant's body, or something like that.
hmmm I don't think it really matters which way round you see them, but I prefer it the way I saw it, The remake, then The Beginning.
EDIT: you may prefer the remake, as it's not focused so much on The Sheriff (though he is still in it in all his sarcastic glory :D) plus Jessica Biel's boobs are in it :D (though covered :( but still nice :D)

And theres only a few years between Haley and me when i met him (i was 16 at the time). And we did meet online. It's weird. It was hard watching that in the cinema, on the "bounce" line, i actually nearly ran out and threw up.

I haven't seen it - but isn't that the film that's infamous for a character saying that she hates Goldfrapp?
Last night I watched a couple of seasonally appropriate films on DVD:
Halloween. BBC2 were showing it later in the evening - but I wanted to be in beddy byes too early to watch that.
The House that Dripped Blood. One of Amicus' anthology films. In the final segment Ingrid Pitt plays a vampire by whom I wouldn't mind being nibbled. Actually, Ingrid Pitt's life contained things more horrible than anything she acted on the screen. When she was a little girl, she and her mother were in a Nazi concentration camp. They even went into the gas chamber. But, as the Red Army was approaching, the guards decided to bugger off without bothering to turn on the gas. They were in the chamber for quite a while before other prisoners let them out. After that, and after leaving the camp, her mother lay on top of her in a ditch white a Russian plane straffed the people from the camp. (I suppose the pilot had no idea who they were.)

'T is! I wonder why they said it ? Was it a crucial moment in the film, when one of the characters said "Let's listen to some music - I'll put on some Goldfrapp" and then the other one goes " No - I don't like it!".
Or was it more completely out of the blue like :
"It's a lovely day today, isn't it ?"
"I SAID I DON'T LIKE GOLDFRAPP - GIVE IT A REST WILL YA?"
Peter Jeffery
01-11-2007, 13:39
I can't remember the details. (Bear in mind that I haven't seen the film.) But I think that a girl gets close to a paedophile(?) (or some such) with a ruse to do with Goldfrapp. Then, later in the film, she says that she doesn't like Goldfrapp anyway. Something like that.
The guy lures her to his house with a bootleg MP3, then later she says and i quote, " I fucking hate Goldfrapp"

30 DAYS OF NIGHT
where to start....hmm...well...it's awful, that's a pretty good way to start, the whole film just drags on, things don't seem to go right (at all ;)) there are a few good parts (2 actually...yep just 2 scenes, well 1 scene and 1 effect) the first scene that I liked was with the truck, then it just goes back to being boring and very...stupid, the effect comes later on in the film (you'll know which one I mean ;) if you bother to go see the film)
wow...I've not wanted to just walk out of a film in a long time...but thought "nah...it'll get better in a minute" ;)
way to many plot holes too...and I kept thinking the main Vampire was going to break out into "West End Girls" (as at times he reminded me of the singer from The Pet Shop Boys (can't think of his name....ahh google :) Neil Tennant) which only made it worse really.

Mr and Mrs Smith - last night. The film with the delightful Ms Jolie, not the film with the same title directed by the late Alf Hitchcock. (Mr Hitchcock was born near where I live. There's a blue plaque on a petrol station saying that it's built on the site of Alf's birthplace.) The film with the delightful Ms Jolie has plot holes so big that you could drive a monster truck through them without touching the sides. That said, the film is fun. The SM scene is nice, though it could have done with being longer. The scene at the suburban party afterwards, when the delightful Ms Jolie realises that she's still wearing the SM gear under her dress, is a hoot. The mindless action and violence is cheering on a chilly November evening.

I watched The Avengers last night - the film with Uma Thurman as Emma Peel. Having heard nothing good, and a lot of bad, of this film, I approached it with low expectations. Actually, I don't think that it's as bad as I'd been led to expect. Here and there were nice little steals from the TV show - such as the bit that's obviously based on The House that Jack Built. I also liked the casting of Patrick McNee as the voice of invisible Jones. Of the many things wrong with the film, I find that my biggest regret is that most of her costumes simply don't suit Ms Thurman. The leather cat suit is good - but most of the others simply look wrong on her body shape.

I'm watching "Hlemmur" (http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk/band/disco/hlemmur_ltd.php), the Icelandic documentary about the drunks that live around Reykjavík's main bus station.
On the up-side the music is by Sigur Rós and comes on a bonus CD with the film but on the flip side it's really, really bleak. Yeah, there are some amazing characters, as you get in any homeless/drunk/tramp community, but with every drunken story, each person they owe money to who threatens to beat them up, a little piece of your heart sheds a tear for them.
Gorgeous art book, utterly beautiful music cd but a real trial of a film.........

Resident Evil: Extinction
I wish I went with my first thoughts :( (found somewhere in this thread) this film franchise has never been done right...The first film was....just about bearable, the second, Apocalypse while it did introduce the Nemesis, was just...well...not good at all. And now Extinction, well it sure is a fitting name...why they thought the need to make a superhero I have no idea...telekinesis in a Zombie film does not work (at least not in this one)
It would have been so much better, and more true to the series of games, if they had used different characters, and shown a story from their perspective (which is what happens in the games).
You hear names Mentioned (and may even meet up with other characters, which would have been much better) of course all the Milla fans will be Annoyed with me for saying this (sorry Jem :() but her character did not need to be in all 3 films...unfortunately it's made in a way now that it can only be her character (which is a shame as Resident Evil (The Games) had some great characters)

I just feel that it ruined the whole idea of the game, it could have been so good if they had just gone with different storylines/perspectives....even if they had just remade the games word for word scene for scene it would have turned out better. Like someone said on IMDB why didn't they just do this film from Claire's perspective (as she is one of the main characters from the games)
And even without knowing the games it came from, it's still a pretty poor film. (or bunch of films)

Sigur Rós - "heima"
12452
It's been touted in various quarters as possibly the best music tour documentary ever and possibly the most beautifully shot tour film ever. Pretty lofty things to say.
Well, I've only watched 97 minutes out of the 314 (ie 5 hours plus!) but I can already say that it's not far from the truth. To have the documentary of clips, interviews and island footage on one DVD and then the full live versions of all the tracks played in it on the other, plus bonus content, means you don't have to sacrifice either the music OR the film - you get both done just right.
The quality of the sound is astonishing - there are moments acoustically that seem to wrench things from my tv and dvd player that simply haven't before. Some held notes or string runs almost hurt with their purity.
If you have even a passing fondness for these Icelandic folks then you really must beg, borrow, buy or steal this immediately.

Vera Lynn came from East Ham - scrubbed up nice for an East Ham girl.
I watched Mean Girls last night - and enjoyed it. (I watched it after the Kylie Show.) Mean Girls is better than I expected. It's funny, Lindsay Lohan is fabulous - and it has some unexpectedly profound things to say about how people are corrupted.....
'Very Low' on the Bappage Reveal scale though. :( A 'Moderate' on the Totty Count sees matters improve however and La Lohan has possibly never looked better.
Jailbait Rating - 4/5.

Very low, indeed on the revealage of bappery. (Didn't bother me over much.) But, as you say, La Lohan has possibly never looked better. :)
As to jailbait rating - . Actually, La Lohan says that her character is 16 (just legal, in England, at least). When the film was released she was in reality 18, and is 21 now.

Underworld Evolution. As with the first film, I don't think I followed it very well. (Are the Underworld world films confusing - or is it just me?) But there's plenty of kick ass and blood thirsty action and - above all - Kate Beckinsale looks very good in leather. In fact, I was mostly watching for Kate Beckinsale.

Pretty well, Caro - but she does look very good in leather. And maybe that's enough. :)
Lions for Lambs.
It'd probably work better as a stage play, consisting, as it does, of a series of dialogues. It's pretty limp as a critique of the "war on terror" as well.
Hard Candy - not bad up to half way through then a combination of a lack of plausability and a loss of interest took over. The 'gimmick', as it's described in the extras, of having the roles reversed is moderately original however the plot mechanics have been seen and done numerous times before - ooooh, she's wandered off, will he escape, oh no the neighbours called will she get found out etc, etc. Made it to the end though. Do I get a prize?

'Human Nature' - Michael Gondry directs, Charlie Kaufman writes, Tim Robbins, Patricia Arquette, Rhys Ifans and Miranda Otto star. You want oddball? You want weird? You want a very hairy Patricia Arquette wandering through the forest singing about the joys of being hairy whilst being at one with nature? Goal! Personally it was all a bit too fractured for me (I couldn't finish watching 'Being John Malckovich') but it is very funny in bits and I'd imagine it would be right up the street of several people on this Forum.

"Magnolia" was on television ages ago, starting at about bedtime. I recorded it, and then forgot about it. I should have the never watched recording somewhere. It would take some finding, though - and, in the absence of a rave review from Lisa, I don't think I'll bother. I expect the recording will turn up some time, anyway (when I'm looking for something else). I seem to remember that it's a very long film.

Funny Face, after Sally recommended it. Audrey Hepburn was lovely, of course, but...
Fred Astaire was way too old for her. In the real world, Astaire was 30 years older than Hepburn, which is pushing it. To make matters worse, he looked all of his 58 years in this film, and she looked considerably younger than her 28.
Also - "empatheticalism". Ptchoo! The script writers seemed not to understand what philosophy is. It would have been so easy to make that better, and it would not have cost them much. We philosophy graduates will work for peanuts. In fact, I do work for peanuts!
