I watched "Pan's Labyrinth" (or, more correctly, "El laberinto del fauno") a few days ago and it deserves every plaudit given to it so far - it's a Guillermo del Toro masterpiece. Fantastically paced, wonderfully shot and a truly engaging story - I won't give anything away but yes, I cried too :D
The faun is amazingly ambiguous and one of the best things for ages.

I went to see shrek the third on Friday, me, kelly, my mum and my sister hah! It was absolutely brilliant! I Thought that they might be getting a bit tired now but it was still fresh...also thought I'd have seen the best jokes in the advert but they saved them all! The ONLY downfall of this film is a couple of castings...1) they've replaced the voice for the ugly stepsister and it's not Johnathon Ross anymore and 2) Justin Timberlake is a dickhead.
Also watched murder by numbers at the weekend my main points:
1. Sandra Bullock is no where near as fit as she usually is
2. There weren't any twists or turns or anything to actually think about as there usually is in a thriller thus making it booooooooring
3. Sandra Bullock is no where near as fit as she usually is.

Hahahah yeah they're so cute hehe! Although incredibly scary when the dream sequence is on and there are about 100000 of the little buggers!
Shrek 3: hilarious! I think I was the only one laughing at the movie theater. These people has no sense of black humor :D They usually translate this kind of movies to Spanish for the kids, but the translation for this movie and the other two have been very good! They use a lot of Mexican jokes and double sense. Not for kids this time, hehehe.
Fantastic 4: well.... not bad... but not the best movie ever. Liked the special effects.
The only good thing about Shrek 3 was Snow White.

"Sailor Beware!" with the irrepressible Peggy Mount. The entire film seems to revolve around her enormous screen presence. Don`t you wish that you were never, ever lost for words whatever the situation?
I also found myself actually fancying the male lead a bit, which is unusual for an old British film.

Went to see Paris, Je T'Aime last night, which was really good. It's a collection of 18 five-minute short films by directors including the Coen Brothers, Wes Craven, Gurinder Chadha and Gus Van Sant, all about love in Paris and starring people like Natalie Portman, Bob Hoskins, Elijah Wood and Steve Buscemi.
Some of the shorts are better than others (I didn't think the one with Elijah Wood was all that great for instance), but on the whole, they're pretty good. The one by Alexander Payne (who directed Sideways) was the best one in my eyes - it's about this lonely middle-aged Midwestern woman who's been learning French (badly), but has always dreamed of going to Paris, and has an epiphany about her life while she's there. It's really touching.
Epic Movie, I turned it off half way thru, it fucking sucked sooo much, why did they bother?

The film affects me so deeply that I actually get nearly the same effect from putting the album on. I only have to hear that same sequence of notes, even on an advert (it's in three on tv right now), to knock me a tiny bit sideways.

I just watched two of my most favourite movies - "The Craft" and "Monster".
I've always been fascinated by Aileen Wuornos. Partly because I've been to The Last Resort bar in Daytona Beach, which is a little spooky.
Also - after watching that Nick Broomfield documentary - "Aileen : Life and Death of a Serial Killer". For some reason, I've always felt sorry for her. :/
Oooh Vespertine, two of my fave films ever!! :D
I love The Craft. Fairuza Balk is just awesome in that (scary though  ).
Monster is an excellent film too. I have that on dvd, the double-disc version, and I still havent watched the extras with the documentary yet

It annoys me that because of how depressing the film is ,some people fail to see the absolute genius of it. I think it has some of the best editing i've seen in any film! I remember it did disturb me for a few says though...I think the only other film that did that to me was dancer in the dark.

Ooh! Yeah, Fairuza Balk was rather creepy. The bit near the end always used to scare me. Picture it : it's pitch black, Sarah's in bed, staring at the window - then all of a sudden - Nancy, Rochelle and Bonnie burst through. :o
Then again, when I was younger, I was sad enough to be terrified during "Hocus Pocus". The scene where Winifred, Sarah and Mary find the magic book, then hide whilst Allison and Max are downstairs. BOO. :(
"Monster" is an amazing film. You should seriously check out the documentaries. Aileen was an absolute nutjob but she's absolutely compelling to watch. A little warning - HER EYES - you'll never have seen such intense, scary as hell eyes in your life before!!

Captivity - Not as bad as people are making out, it wont win any awards for best film, but it's watchable, a few scenes didn't need to be in it, and I'm not talking about gore, just a few story points that were used, but as it's a completely different film to the previous cut that most reviewers had seen (there is more gore rather than loads of police scenes).
like I said not going to win any awards, but watchable, just ignore the young blokes acting (as it's pretty bad in places) Elisha looks lovely in a band uniform (I think that's what it was).....;)
Die Hard 4.0 (or Live Free Die Hard in the US) - Hmmmm good action film....if a little bit of a let down compared to the first 3, Die Hard is still the best, then ...With A Vengeance, then ....Die Harder.....then 4.0.....
the reason for that is, that at certain points in the film you get the feeling that it was meant to be an 18 rating at some point.....but things had been taken out to make it more "young viewer" friendly, notice the bad editing in places where Justin Long is talking and the voice doesn't match his movements, also....something I noticed after watching it....there isn't any blood....apart from the blood on McClane.....hmmmmm glad to see that they used the parkour bloke from District 13 (I'm surprised it took this long for films to start using it...Jackie Chan been doing it for years :D)
anyway....it's alright if you just want an action film, but if you are a Die Hard fan of.....er....Die Hard ;).....you may feel the same way I did...:(

Tonight I went to see the new Harry Potter movie - I was so excited about it, but I have to say I was a bit dissapointed. The woman who plays Dolores Umbridge was definitely the highlight of the movie, but I thought they could've done so much more with it - instead it kinda ended up a little dull! And I HATE saying that cos I'm such a big fan! I'll still buy it when it comes out on dvd though! And I have the new book reserved for July 21st!
yesterday I watched Where the Truth Lies, by Atom Egoyan.
I fell in love with this director when I first watched Exotica, which has our lovely Mia Kirshner in it.
Anyway, that was interesting. There was a very naive feel to it. The storyline is not very original, fo sure. But the actors, the direction and the music made it all so fresh... I thought it was hypnotizing.
Thumbs up for Alison Lohman... (plus Colin Firth's and Kevin Bacon's chests and bums......!)

Staying with a friend in Manchester last week, I saw one of the strangest films I'd ever seen, Thundercrack! - it's this cult film from the 70s that's like a hilarious bizarro porno version of the Rocky Horror Show. During a thunderstorm, a bunch of strangers take shelter at a dilapidated mansion owned by Mrs Gert Hammond, who's like something out of Grey Gardens or Tennessee Williams, and they hook up in all kinds of ways - straight sex, gay sex - it's not for the easily shocked! Apparently my mate saw it at a film festival, then picked up the DVD abroad. It's funny, but totally strange. It makes early John Waters movies seem quite normal!

I bought 'Talladega nights' today, starring Will Ferrell. I'd heard it was shite, but bought it anyway, thinking there'd be some laughs in it somewhere cos Will Ferrell was in it, and normally he cracks me up, but I was really dissapointed! Time to prattle on a bit with my Prisoner obsession again. I just watched the Dance Of The Dead episode on DVD. A bit hard to watch, knowing it will not turn out well for our hero or his friend. But it is balanced by the performance of the fantastic Mary Morris.
This is one of the episodes I'm sure I haven't seen before. After seeing it, I'm quite sure there are diplomatic relations between The Village and Summerisle.

I absolutely love Ghibli films and No-Face is my favorite character. Miyazaki's films especially have been a part of my life for years now .. not only because it inspires me, but also 'cause of personal things going on during that period. It's hard to pick a favorite film though, they all have so many aspects in each that I really enjoy. Oh, and the soundtracks, too! Joe Hisaishi is a genius!
Miyazaki's currently working on a new one, has anyone else heard about it? I think it's called "I Lost My Little Boy".. it's supposed to use a lot of watercolors. I'm really excited about it.

Watched this horrendous film called Sickle last night. It cost me a pound from Woolworths and I recon it cost about the same to make! It was meant to be a horror film but was absolutely histerical; the sound, the acting, the direction was all screwed up! I would recommend people watch it because I couldn't possibly relay how bad it is in writing! In the first 5 mins it showed a hot young weirdo frigging herself in a car (while thinking about a slaughter house!!!) to try and turn on her comparitavely prudish boyfriend. Hey, at least there was some female nudity! :D
I like the sound of that - what's it called again? :D

Just so you know, that grey on grey thing doesn't work - different monitors will have different gamma levels and settings for brightness and contrast. On both my home PC and here on my work one you can read the "spoiler" text as plain as day without even having to concentrate on it.
That means at least one thing on the last page has spoiled a films surprises for me too !

Went to a preview of the new Pixar movie, Ratatouille, last night. Was pretty funny. Think a lot of it will go over kids' heads though. It's about a rat who wants to be a top chef, but any time he gets into a kitchen the chefs come after him with cleavers because he's a rat. So he teams up with the busboy, so that together they can be a great chef. Peter O'Toole's really funny in it as this funereal-looking, epicurean food critic.

In this cheeky documentary, filmmaker Albert Nerenberg conducts an inquiry into the origins of stupidity, exploring why humans increasingly choose to be ignorant despite information being more widely available than ever. Footage includes interviews with authors, academicians and pop-culture personalities such as Noam Chomsky, Coolio, John Cleese, Salma Hayek and Bill Maher. Extras offer you a chance to test your IQ (Ignorance Quotient).

Transformers - it felt like being 12years old all over again , only the robots had no strings and weren`t filmed in claymation . Critics gave it a hard time for how noisy it was - stupid cunts - don`t see a Michael Bay film and expect Oscar material , it does what he writes on the tin . The film was everything I wanted it to be , noise , action , guns , explosions and double entendres :) Action was improbable but totally enjoyable .

Went to a screening of Control, the new film about Ian Curtis and Joy Division, directed by Anton Corbijn. it's really, really good. The stark black and white photography really complements Joy Division's sound, and the lead actor's really good as Curtis, changing so much over the course of the film, but mostly not even needing dialogue to express it. The guys playing the rest of Joy Division were really good too, and provided some comedy moments, especially the guy playing Hooky. Apparently they all learned to perform the songs themselves, and didn't have to mime.
Hairspray - absolutely hilarious, all of the actors were fantastic but i really didnt like john travolta's singing, he basically just spoke the words.
as fro zac efron, i really cant see what his appeal is supposed to be. he wasnt as bad in this film but usually he has more make up on than most of the girls he works with.

I've been watching the DVD of "The Bourne Identity" again. Just as gripping as the first time.
Will be watching "The Bourne Supremacy" in the next week or so in preparation for the release "The Bourne Ultimatum" in the next couple of weeks.
I can't think of any better post-Cold War secret agent movies, can you?

I guess this one would be better, but I failed.

I found the Simpsons Movie slightly underwhelming. Just a really long episode of the Simpsons really! I was expecting more belly laughs considering they were holding stuff back. I'd like them to try more movies though
I went to see Tales From Earthsea on Saturday which was lovely. Really enjoyed the pace at which the story developed - it didn't rely on putting silly fights in at intervals that I feel it would have done if it were made in the West.

Saw the simpsons movie the other night aswell and i found it a tad .....shallow. Not anywhere near the quality of even one old episode as the plot was crap and all over the place... and i found there was lots of forced laughter from the audience in the cinema! Anyway what happened to that pig? ...did he die in the house? He should have been in the whole thing.
Yeah so anyway, last night i saw happiness on tv and i still can't get it out of my head ever since... particularly with the pedophile story. I just thought it was so sick! Especially alot of the dialogue between the father and son...
...VERY DISTURBING

Watched Priscilla : Queen of the desert and afterwards gave daft punk's electroma a second chance. Loved Priscilla and always have, and i think i liked electroma this time, maybe 'cause i was alone, at 4 in the morning, in complete silence!
...and i appreciated it's sort of....70's-ness a bit better. I also noticed how similar both films where... Both films are about friends, that see themselves as something else than they are...The differences are only seen in the endings, which sees the robots of electroma blowing themselves up and our priscilla drag queens having a big fabulous stage show!
...Both equally as entertaining imo!

Went to see Waitress last night. Bit of a chick flick, but quite sweet and funny and likeable at the same time. Don't go and see it hungry though - the lead character is constantly baking these pies in it, some of which look delicious.
It has a bit of a tragic behind-the-scenes story to it, 'cause its director Adrienne Shelly, who also plays one of the characters in it (and was in two of indie director Hal Hartley's movies - Trust and The Unbelievable Truth’) was murdered a few months ago.

I watched Grudge 2 last night, we bought it cheaaaaap on DVD so thought we may as well watch it. It was good enough to keep you a little tense to begin with but OH MY GOD was I pissed off by the time it finished, seriously, the whole thing made NO sense what so ever, and every time they could've turned it around and actually made it a decent film (which I stupidly thought they might!) they just went down the route of 'we'll just make it a bit more gory/scary instead' it was shit.
Mind you saying that, I still made Kelly come downstairs with me to clean my teeth that night, I didn't want to go on my own hahaha!

Yesterday I borrowed the 2-DVD set 'by Brakhage', collecting some of the best short films of Stan Brakhage. He was one of those avant garde fellas whose work you read about in high school or college, but never got the chance to see.
So far I've seen Desistfilm and Wedlock House: An Intercourse. His later stuff inspired loads of movie and video makers, especially David Fincher, who used his style in the opening credits of Seven.

Witchfinder General - on television last night. Weirdly, I hadn't seen before (double weirdly because I have it on DVD - but have never played it). I decided at the time it was released not to go and see it because I thought it would probably be too strong meat for me. (Probably also the reason I haven't watched the DVD.) Anyway - having now seen it - I think I was right all those years ago.
