Went to a preview of Miss Potter last night, all about Beatrix Potter, writer of Missy Tiggywinkle etc, with Renee Zellweger as Potter and Ewan McGregor (with a huge moustache) as her fiancé. I'd say it was... nice is probably the best word. Quite sweet in its way, but not something I'd really have gone and paid to see. Ewan's likeable as always, but something about Renee Zellweger always gets on my nerves. I think it's her squinty face.

Watched "Secretary" again last night - such a great film.

We've just had a huge natter about it in the office as nearly everybody watched it. Split the place in two between the "wasn't it cute, romantic and funny" and the "disgusting and really couldn't stomach it at all".

Me ?

I thought (as ever) that it's beautifully done, as subtle in some of it's "play" references as it is obvious for others and actually a great love story that just happens to be told from an alternative viewpoint.

The "turning the spreader bar to fit through doors with reports in hand" still makes me giggle and the fetishising of the red circles is still amazingly sexy for more than one Freudian reason.

Top film.

Just got back from town watching ShortBus. Directed by the guy who did Hedwig.

Totally amazing film but not for the prudish!!! I have never seen so much (real) sex in one film, but the whole story was very moving in parts. Focuses on a sex-councellor who has never had an orgasm herself and goes in search of one, and also a very cute gay couple who are experimenting sexually, whilst one of them who can self-fellate, is all the time compiling his suicide video. Anyway, won't say any more but can HEARTILY recommend :)

*hijacks thread*

It's v v good and the first one I bought by him - although I think my fave might now be Seven Swans which is very mellow but very good to chill to. The Avalanche is good too and there's an old album of his which I like "Enjoy your Rabbit" where he experiments with electronic stuff - it quite often misses the mark and will do your head in to listen to in one go, but there's some gems on there too.

I heard some of his stuff and its rather fine!!!

Amazon have it but its a bit pricey-well it was when I looked.

Sorry still thread hi-jacking!!!:D

Erm film film film. It was actually Muppets Christmas Carol!!!:o

United 93.

I've always had mixed feelings about drama documentaries but this was excellent - truly gut wrenching. There's undoubtedly a lot of conjecture but it really gave a sense of what it could have been like, more than any straight documentary.
The DVD extra feature about the families was very moving too.

well went to a preview screening of "Babel" at cineworld on broadstreet with my cousin (as she got free tickets :D).

we were in traffic for about an hour as (we found out after getting home) that the police had found bomb making equipment in Ladbrokes on the strattford road which they had to block off causing loads of traffic on other roads :( so we missed the first 20 minutes or so (which we both hate, but hell it was free anyway :D)

as we walked in, we thought have we got the right screen, as we were confronted by a 20ft Japanese muff  (sorry) but that was odd, but we did have the right screen and sat down.

well anyway about the film, ......yeah.....it's.....o....k, it's one of those films that takes a lot of time getting where it needs to get, I won't spoil it for anyone, but it's ok, I don't think I would have gave cash to see it, but I'm glad I've seen it, kind of.....

good night for Ice cream or good film......or both?

saw Smokin' Aces last night........hmmmmm quite funny in places (the lawyer, pretty sure it's the main guy from Arrested Development...but I could be wrong) and the hotel assault is pretty fun, but it takes a long time to get there, plus the ending is pretty bad, it tried to have a big twist but didn't really work.

but with that said it's a pretty good film, Alicia Keys is actually ok in it, her first role, it's good enough just to see Jack from Lost (Mathew Fox) wearing a stupid elvis type wig. good performance's from Ryan Reynolds, and Jeremy Piven as Ace's, plus some funny scenes with "The Tremors" (the gang of three hillbillies) makes it a fun film.

and no, it's not one that you will need to bring your brain to, but if you miss something you'll be lost as to what's going on.......

oh and I should add that Orange Wednesday brings out the morons to the cinema, group of girls behind us, chatted about the film as it was happening, and were eating chips out of the paper.........which was great :( why do people still go to the cinema to F'ing talk?

anyway, an enjoyable but flawed film

oh and they showed a trailer for a film called blood and Chocolate.......they use real snow wolves (or just plain wolves), which can only mean they didn't have any make up budget......looks shite.

Oh I love that film. Especially the bits with William's mum, she's a handful indeed.

Went to a screening last night of Running With Scissors, which was good. It's based (partly or completely, depending on who you ask) on a true story of a teenager in the 70s who's sent to live with his mother's psychiatrist and his extremely dysfunctional family when his parents break up. I'd heard it had had some bad reviews in the States, but I thought it was pretty good. Except for Gwyneth Paltrow - I've never been all that impressed with her acting.

No, but there is a disturbing fart scene!:D Some of the things his security people do are much more unpleasant, of course. The film (Last King of Scotland) doesn't overly dwell on these but we're left in no doubt what he was capable of at his worst. The interesting thing is we see many different aspects to him and Forest Whittaker's portrayal thoroughly deserves the Oscar nomination (and indeed the Oscar).

"Antikörper" (Antibodies - 2005)

It's a German film set somewhere deep in the dark heart between the first Silence of the Lambs and Se7en. Over the length of the film it's easily as good as either of them and, as much as it inherits from them, you really will be utterly transfixed for the whole 2hr 30mins run.

It's pretty powerful though, the music and story combine to drag you in and just....not....let....go. Add in children and a serial killer and it's not light.

Oh, and without spoiling things, there's a scene part way through where I actually recoiled from the screen and covered my eyes while whimpering a little "noooo". You'll know the bit.

Trust me, though - it's really, really good.

Not a new film (I think it's from '99) but I really enjoyed "October Sky" the other day. One for the geeks, to certain extent - it's set in the late 50s and revolves around a West Virginian boy's determination to succeed in amateur rocketry... following the Sputnik launch.

Great performaces all round, including a young Jake Gyllenhaal, and a not-seen-enough-these-days Laura Dern.

Definitely worth a look. The story follows a fairly predictable route, but it's very inspirational & heart-warming.

Fantastic, in a word. Mesmerising, compelling, intelligent, and scary. Yes, the parallels with the films you mentioned are there but it's very much it's own film. It's not the gorefest that people might expect and all the better for it.
No doubt it'll resonate more with Catholics and those more familiar with the old testament than me (not forgetting those from PETA!!) but it's one for fans of psychological thrillers.
I'd mixed feelings about the ending but that doesn't detract from it at all. And for those of you wondering where to see it, keep your eyes peeled on late night offerings on Film 4 (if you're in the UK that is).

Went to see the new Christopher Guest movie For Your Consideration on Saturday, which I loved! Especially the two entertainment reporters, who were hilarious, especially the way the woman walks, and some of the man's comments! I was a little disappointed that Parker Posey wasn't in it more though, she's one of my favourite actors.

I love that film it is hilarious, as ever.

Saw Breakfast on Pluto the other night with the excellent Cillian Murphy, but actually he kind of dissappointed me a bit in this film as he "weirded" the role up a tiny bit too much I think. I wanted to really like this film, but came away wondereing why I had watched it:confused:

Unknown 5 guys wake up in a warehouse with amnesia, one of them is tied up to a chair, and another is handcuffed to a railing and hanging from his wrist (ouch). it's ok, good while in the warehouse, not so good outside (looks like they did the outside parts with very little effort) the idea was good, but not done well.

yes indeed - there are two films called crash and I think I've written about both in this thread as both are great - but we were talking about the David Cronenburg one.

Is that the one you meant Setsuno?- if so then yes you missed it. The lead character does indeed get it on with Rosanna Arquette's gaping leg wound.

"The Science of Sleep".

Michel Gondry is indulging his imagination even more fully than on "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". Not always coherently to my mind but it's a fun, if slight, tale of no great consequence.

And Gael Garcia Bernal is the most compelling actor of his generation, in my opinion.

Watched "Children of Men" last night and to be honest, before watching it I wasn't really that fussed about it (except that I love Julianne Moore) - however I really enjoyed it - some great sequences in there that all look like they're just one shot (but I'm sure aren't really!)

And I have never seen such good CGI in a film (i.e. the character who joins near the end of the film - without giving it away!) - really really realistic.

'T was the same here, I wasn't dying to see this film, but went to it, well, actually because one of my friends wanted to see it. It silenced me completely (and that's quite hard to do), really, blew me away. Funny thing is, I don't know why I find it that good. Is it the realistic filming ? The Apocalyptic atmosphere ? well it is scary ...because we all know that Mr Bush is still running the show! perhaps his war should be against his own stupididty not various nations in the middle east?

i still think it'll all tip into the next overdue ice age - but that still doesn't give us the right to exploit the planet without giving a fuck about it. bollocks to industry and capitalism and all those ism's and what really pisses me off is that although we know all this shit is gonna happen people won't change because they can't give up their so called standard of living... me i'm dumping the auxilliary deisel engine in my sailing boat... i'm not connected to the grid and i'm largely self sufficient - oh and i don't have a car just a mountain bike... so i'm doing my bit the best i can - back to the Palaeolithic i say ... of course in order to make that work........

we need to reduce the population massively..although it seems that nature will probably do this for us...
