i just put on Phoneix "United". an incredible album all around. for those of you who haven't heard this, i recommend it highly. i bought this album at the same time as "Felt Mountain" in late summer/early fall of 2000, and even though they are completely different, i think i listened to only these two cds for about two months straight. so now, whenever i listen to either "United" or "Felt Mountan" i'm reminded of the other.

MEW - Triumph for Man

I just managed to get a copy of the album and i'm kind of addicted to it this week. Very different to their new album ( if anybody has heard of them!). Different type of music completely from Goldfrapp (guitars, angelic/wimpy voices) but in some ways the same!

Real to real cacophony by Simple Minds. Please don't laugh...early simple minds stuff is top quality and seriously underrated. I always just thought they were a bad stadium rock band when i was younger, but the late seventies to early eighties stuff is great! Anyone who hasn't heard New Gold Dream is missing out on a fantastic album! Anything after Sparkle in the Rain isn't too hot, except for 'Don't You Forget About Me', of course: the curse of nostalgia...

Good call, Diamante ! I've got Simple Minds' New Gold Dream on. Had it on tape for years but recently got a copy from the sale at Edinburgh Virgin in a double pack with "Sparkle in the Rain".

As for early SM music, I go for Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call anytime. Best listened to on the road from Loch Lomond to Loch Earn. Atmospheric.

Oh yeah....Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call are sweet albums: 'Theme for Great Cities' is soooooo good! Only problem is that i've got the old cd version of both albums that cuts out the last couple of tracks of sister feelings call, which is annoying! That's a sweet deal getting New Gold Dream and Sparkle in the Rain in one package: I love Sparkle in the Rain, it's on just the right side of stadium bombast (unlike Once Upon a Time, which i can't get into), and while not all of its great, I love most of it, especially 'Up on the Catwalk' and 'The Kick Inside of Me'.

'Coup' is a classic, really gets me in a great mood. I can't believe it was made in the early eighties, it sounds so ahead of its time.

Right now, i'm listening to 'Life on Other Planets' by Supergrass.

I'm in Love with a German Film Star by The Passions: has anybody else heard this song? it's an absolute stunner, i first heard it one an 'alternative eighties' compilation that wasn't amazingly alternative and pretty bleedin' obvious in parts: Blue Monday by New Order? Boys Don't Cry by The Cure? Come on, they've done much more than that!

Anyway, this song is so good, i never heard of it until a year ago, and from what i've found out, the band has done nothing else before or after. The guitars just sound really sexy and cool on it, and i recommend it to everyone!

'Lady Madonna' is on right now!!!

For anyone who hasn't heard of this band, it is Frikkin awesome. They sound like a Japanese version of 'Veruca Salt'...Half of the lyrics are sung in Japanese and the other half are in english, even though they don't always make sense, they rock, considering there are two members in the band!!!

Also, this group is very difficult to find. I just bought a bunch of the stuff from....

JCC is Mancunian hence the thick "'Ey, our kid I'm mad fer it I yam" accent.
Saw him as support years ago to Elvis Costello and the like and I thought he was really good. Looking through a rack of CDs about 2 years ago and lo and behold the CD had been re-released* .
If I tell you it's it's produced by Martin Hannett with appearances from Vinnie Riley (The Durutti Column) and Pete Shelley (Buzzcocks) you'll get an idea, it's really well done. Still sounds fresh (well apart from the Keith Joseph mention perhaps).

yeah, cocteau twins! my favorite band ever. and i agree, treasure and blue bell knoll are the best of the bunch. also, victorialand is good, too. really really mellow stuff that just liz and robin did themselves without a bassist proper. also the moon and the mellodies is good. they did it with ambient pianist harold budd who worked with brian eno. really good stuff, as well. but i have to recomend this to you because it's a rare gem and soooooo good. the single "iceblink luck" off of heaven or las vegas has a b-side that's not available on the fulle length. it's called "watchlar" and it's absolutely their best song ever ever ever. you must find it. i know for a fact that you can usually find it on kazaa, which is your best bet, unless you really love watching ebay to track down the single. anyway, the song is really simple, actually. but it has this really synthy, syncopated feel and a simple loop to it, and as always liz's voice is incredible. check it out. i urge you!!!!!!

There's loads on there at the mo, so I'll get it tomorrow. It's available on cd or 12" and i'm not bothered either way which version i end up getting. Good thing i double checked the track listing on the 7" though, cos 'watchlar' isn't on that version! By the way, someone here recommended me art of noise: was it you, durham? i got 'daft' the other week, forgot to mention it, and wow: great stuff, moments in love is truly excellent. Also, am i right in saying that 'close to the edit' has a little vocal effect that got reused again in the prodigy's firestarter?

Oh yeah, listening to Blade Runner soundtrack at the mo: the bootleg version which has loads of cool stuff that's not on the official release. A beautiful film, and a beautiful score. Love Theme just kills me every time. it's so gorgeous. Anyone else here like Vangelis?

themoodfits
06-12-2003, 00:25
i have been on here several times rambling about vangelis. i love that soundtrack and listen to it all the time. love theme....hell yeah, an amazing song. if you listen, you can hear the mellody to can't take my eyes off of you in there. "you're just too good to be true, can't take my eyes off of you". it's there if you listen. now, when i listen, i always hum that little bit along with it.

themoodfits
06-12-2003, 00:38

diamente
06-12-2003, 00:39
bloody hell.....you're right, it's definitely there! Was in the middle of listening to Blade Runner Blues when i read your post but had to skip it to love theme just to find out for myself! That's pretty cool, i've never noticed it myself before!

I haven't got much by Vangelis, only the bootleg, the official (which i'll always keep, cos i like the sequencing and dialogue snippets and it's got Blush Response, Wait for Me and Rachael's Song on it, all amazing) and 'Themes': some of the scores on that just turns me to jelly. The themes from missing and the bounty are incredible. My favourite though is 'la petite fille de la mer' which is the best thing in the world to listen to just before you go to sleep. It's like the most gorgeous lullaby ever!

Aye, the "Hey" bit in Firestarter sounds like an AON sample.

Their first album "Who's afraid of the Art Of Noise" is a corker. Phenomenally ahead of its time for 1984. Dark and mysterious.

They were on the same record label (ZTT) as Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Another decent band on ZTT were Propoganda - could almost be a Great Aunty/Uncle of the 'frapp, no less.

Madonna and Sean Penn got married to 'Moments in Love'? That's quite exceptionally cool.

Hey there, themoodfits, the Iceblink Luck 12" finally came in the post yesterday, and I've listened to both of the B-sides. I just wanted to say thank you very much for recommending me 'Watchlar'. It's quite a departure from their usual sound, and it's excellent. I love the bass, it's kind of like the Cocteau's doing R&B or something like that, pretty sexy, the music reminded me of some long-lost 70's Isley Brothers tune, which is always a good thing! Liz's voice is really gorgeous on it too. Top stuff! 'Mizake the Mizan' was a lot closer to the Heaven or Las Vegas sound, it could have easily fit on that album, it's very pretty and dreamy. Lovely. I probably like both songs more than 'Iceblink Luck' to be honest!

Thanks again for the recommendation mate, and thanks also to everyone who's been pointing me towards some absolutely brilliant music on this board! I'm getting poorer and poorer but it's all worth it, he-he-he!

By the way, right now I'm listening to a compilation i cooked up, and I'm listening to 'Wood Beez' by Scritti Politti which is one of the best singles EVER! That Green's a frickin' genius. Before this I was listening to 'Absolute', also by Scritti Politti, which is also one of the best singles EVER!

my pleasure, diamante. i'm glad you like watchlar. you're right, it does have an almost r&b feel to it with that pimp-esque style bass loop. it's also got a real raw electronic feel to it. i've found that it sounds best when played right after "hairy trees" and right before "heat miser" by massive attack. anyway, again, glad i could turn you on to it.

How good are we?. The musical taste in here are 2nd to none!. May i suggest 'Brilliant Trees', David Sylvian's first solo album?. If you dug Japan then its the best one to start off with. The next few were a bit too jazzy for my liking.
Provision by Scritti Politti is a hugely underated cd... Give it a blast.
Also, have any of you chaps and chicks ever heard ' Sing Song' by a band called Sudden Sway?. Came out in '86 in about 10 different 7" versions. Lead singer sounded a bit like Stephen 'Tin Tin ' Duffy but the music was pure eighties electro-pop. Brought out a brill album too....in a box!.

Candleland is a great song, I agree Durham: two fantastic singers on one song, very nice...

Cheers for the recommendations, medzel, though I've already got Brilliant Trees and Provision, bought them a few months ago on vinyl. I haven't given BT a chance yet as there's so much stuff I've bought that I haven't got round to listening yet. Will give it a listen tonight! You're right, Provision is underrated: I don't like it as much as Cupid, but there's not much else in the whoel music universe that I love as much as Cupid! I love the production on it, really crisp and catchy. I heard Oh Patti ages ago, and that's still my favourite on the album, and Lovesick and Boom There She Was are absolutely brilliant. By the way, one time i was listening to it and I accidentally switched the speed of the record from 33 to 45 during All That We Are, and Green's voice sounds absolutely hilarious when sped up, like a chipmunk on speed or something.

I read here that you're getting rid of your Cocteau Twins 12" singles? I would love to purchase them from you, but I wouldn't be able to do so until after Christmas, as I'm pretty poor at the mo! I will get back to you about this in just over a weeks' time if you've got any left by then!

Softy, the extended versions at the end of Cupid are sweeeet. Absolute sounds amazing in its longer version, and the 12" version of Hypnotize sounds better than the original album version! It's quite odd though, i've got both the cd and vinyl versions of Cupid and both have different versions of Perfect Way on them. The one on the vinyl version is a little shorter and sounds more radio-friendly, both are great!

this is the off-topic section, so i gues it's ok that i'm going off-topic here, but has anyone seen the movie "zentropa"? the old lars von trier movie from the early nineties. i've seen it several times, but it's on the independent film channel right now and i'm watching it while i type. it's such an incredible film. black and white, really claustrophobic feeling. i gues this isn't off topic, because i'm sitting here listening to the movie rather than watching it. so that counts as what i'm listening to right now.

i cried like a baby when i watched that movie. i saw it in the theaters, and afterward, i walked home in the rain, and with the mood of the film still lingering added to the rain, i just cried the whole walk home. sooooo sad. anyway, zentropa is more of a psychological thriller, and kind of a stab at noir. my personal favorite of all his movies. it's about this american soldier sent to postwar germany, and this underground nazi woman seduces him. well, it's more involved than that. that's kind of a reductive synopsis. i haven't seen dogville yet, but a friend of mine is in it and i did her makeup for the new york premiere a while back and hoped i'd be able to see it then, but didn't get to. i'll probably have to wait until it's on video or dvd. has anyone here seen that?

Dogville hasn't come out in the UK yet, dunno when it's coming out, but I do want to see it. I hope my local cinema plays it, that is if they're not preoccupied with devoting 15 of it's 12 screens to the new Lord of the Rings film (not that I hate those films or anything like that). Sometimes my local plays some cool indie/world cinema films, like Amelie, Battle Royale, Y Tu Mama Tambien and stuff like that, but I don't want to have to go into London to see it as their prices are nasty. I do film reviews for my local paper but we hardly get to do smaller films as the local cinemas rarely screen them and it would be kinda pointless reviewing films that the readers can't get to see. A shame, especially considering some of the shite I have to go and see instead! Saying that, I saw Out of Time with Denzel Washington today and was very pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Really tense in places, I thought.

"winter wonderland" is truly a beautiful song after they've touched it. oh and by the way, don't worry about the denzel implication. i just read my dogville post and it was worse. i went so far as to almost drop a name and then didn't. trying to be discreet just made me seem pretentious. I love Round and Round by New Order. I cooked up a compilation of New Order songs for a mate of mine who wants to hear more of them. Here's the listing for it...

1. The Perfect Kiss (long version)
2. True Faith
3. Everything's Gone Green
4. Touched by the Hand of God
5. This Time of Night
6. Thieves Like Us
7. 1963
8. Fine Time
9. Sub-Culture (Substance version)
10. All Day Long
11. Shellshock
12. Round and Round
13. Regret
14. Bizarre Love Triangle (long version)

Didn't put Blue Monday cos he already knows it, but there was loads I wanted to put on there that I had to leave out. Should have really made it a double cd, to be honest.

I've also got a tape version of the Perfect Way 12''. The packaging is like a B&H fag packet, all covered in shiny gold stuff.

Nice.

Phew! for a moment there i thought you lot were going to start analysing Liz's lyrics in depth!!!. Dont go there. If you do - start yer own website!!. The threads would be about 100 pages long knowing you lot and we would be getting thread alerts every minute!!!.
Treasure ,however, is the perfect xmas cd from les Coctoz. Along with xmas trees and Drambuie, it really sets the mood. Frosty the snowman does not however.

Noooo... Heaven or las vegas is their best overall.... Treasure is the ultimate xmas album!. Let me whisk you all back to December'84........
Went to Virgin records in Renfield Street in Glasgow to do my xmas shopping (for me!). On the new releases rack, 3 new albums - Treasure, Hatfull of hollow(Smiths) and Exorcising Ghosts by Japan. How good was that!?!. Bought all three!. And i was poor in them days (but happy).
Treasure was the one for me though because of its xmas vibe. Happy times............

Dont get them anymore( Sob-sob:()

The second track from Treasure reminds me of Christmas. I haven't been listening to much Christmassy stuff lately, mostly summery stuff, cos I miss the lovely hot weather and sunny days that we had earlier this year. Alternately, I remember listening to Seventeen Seconds by the Cure a lot during August. And that's not a summery album!

I'm listening to Melody A.M by Royksopp at the mo, which reminds me of a couple of summers ago, especially Eple and Sparks.

Right...... The lads were fond of this nightclub in Dusseldorf where they went for a wee drinky and a dance. This club had a kind of Head Waiter cum maitre d who went round the clubbers asking them what they wanted to drink. Sorry, telling them what they wanted...which was the house champers..... so he would say(in a german accent) "Vot do you vant?.... Champaigne??....KORRECT!!!". The lads were so taken by this guy and his decadent ways, they gave him a cameo on the track 'Das Model'.

( ) by Sigur Ros: a fantastic album. The second track is my favourite from that, it's amazing.

Right now I'm listening to Nothing Changes Under the Sun by Blue States. I can't recommend this album enough, it's so beautiful. It's got slight hints of Felt Mountain about it, but there's touches of Ennio Morricone and John Barry too. Very cinematic, very chilled, very wonderful. Makes me want summer to arrive right now!

The first five tracks in particular are AMAZING. Has anyone else here heard this album? Or the follow-up, Man Mountain (which I've been meaning to buy for ages)? They also did a song for the film 28 Days Later called 'Season Song' which I haven't heard yet.

that blue states album is amazing. my favorite on it is "heroe's elegy", but everything on it is pure class. as far as 'season song", it's a great song, too. a female vocal with a children's choir singing back up. fantastic stuff. it has a really epic, anthemic feel to it.

Oh Yeah, Oh No

All amazing stuff with Alison vocals...

On 'Total All Out Water' from about 2:00 onwards Alison is doing loads of super sexy noises that would'nt be out of place on Black Cherry, topped of with some crazy screaming...great stuff!
