My friend who prides himself on being a serious music type person (god you can't shut him up down the pub), got back from Miami recently and he confided in me that he went to see her in concert.
His opinion on all things music related is therefore null and void from that day forth, naturally!

I've got loads of his Goldfrapp, Madonna & Tori Amos mixes so I thought I'd see what his solo album was like - and it's not bad ! It's shameless dancefloor electro-pop and considering a lot of it passes me by I'm finding this more of a keeper than a listen-and-delete.
In case you don't know R*A is Ronald Abdala, located in the Lebanon, and you can download the whole album in great quailty for FREE from his site (http://www.ra-star.com/ra.html)

'Electric Alice', plaintive and urgent with it's languid bass and dripping lyrics, may well be one of the best tracks Nick Cave has ever done. Combine this with the rusty serrated proto-blues of the other end of the track, 'Grinderman', and you've got something pretty damn special !!

The Sisters of Mercy - "My Heartland"
The Sisters took up a huge chunk of my time in days too far back to work out. I think I still have most of the original 7" and 12" vinyl and can pretty much sing along with all of them with barely a thought - they had some usage until stuff like "Some Girls Wander By Mistake" saved me from having to play them !
I'm just downloading a double cd live bootleg with 7 or 8 recentish unreleased tracks in the set - "Crash and Burn", "Summer", "Will I Dream", "We are the same, Susanne", "Romeo Down", "War On Drugs", "Snub Noise" and "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen"...........
I'm still excited to hear what ol' Spiggy gets up to !

The Sisters were one of those bands that still somehow get the musical hairs rising when you hear the old stuff. A lot of it has actually dated pretty well, to be honest, and probably because it was so scuzzy/big/overblown/silly that it never really sat in a time in order to date.
I mean, Jolene, Emma and Gimme Shelter ? Even goths have a sense of humour ! :D;)

Even on that, though, stuff like "Ribbons" is still class...
Her lovers queued up in the hallway
I heard them scratching at the door
I tried to tell her
About marx and engels, God and angels
I don't really know what for
But she looked good in ribbons
So just walk on in
She looked good in ribbons
So just walk on in

??? Why do you say that?
He encouraged them to push more layers of guitar, more vocal overlays, more of anything he could - you can tell the tracks on "Floodland" that he got his way on most. Don't get me wrong, "Floodland" was a great album, but when you compare the rockier side that "Vision Thing" had it was a much smaller jump to that than "First and Last" was to "Floodland" *
* Just my opinion. Contents liable to settling. Discontinue if rash develops.

"Blue Flowers"
Such a bizarre and unique track, even now - those weird warped strings, the seriously odd wordplay. I'm not a big rap fan - well, ok, I hate most of it) but this I've always loved.
Oh, and the fact the Automator mixes use some Bjork vocals and opera worked into the breaks just adds to the impact !
When the DJ played it at volume at The G Word the other night it was immense and your head just nods without effort........
Dr. octagon, paramedic focus on the east
For priests my anisthetics prescribe a certain fertilizer
Homegrown computer wise on the microphone
Utilizing tracks inverted by animical
High typical force, space sex intercourse
You get lost, and memorize to the enterprise
Scotty the captain, mr. spock keeps rappin
4212, the shit moves at warp speed
Dynamic 7, navigation of the coppers
Moving in crystals, operating lightspeed
I see the plants, they're growing
Blue flowers (2x)
Cyber analog through virtual reality
Different colors of earth rocks in variety
Medical equal, with helmets on the space people
Galactic at 8, the verdict can't demonstrate
You be confused, and disobeying planet rules
Biochemistry, with stars for publicity
Megasonic bass, with data chips in your face
Nuclear lend drums, that bang hard on dark tracks
Reacting reverb, concious spots on your nerve
I take a break like james brown to the bridge
*singing* sailing, takes me away
To wherever i'm really going.. shoobedowop
Up, up, and away!
In my beautiful, balloon!
Optical biofeedback, magnetic borders
X-ray you see skeletons fly north for the next day
We give passes covered with dioxalyn gases
Return
*singing again* here's george jetson!
Back with intriguing positive minerals
You enter the center search and raiding at random
With no condom, no rubbers will reach the testicles
And effect em, by animal means, i'm in your spectrum
As i walk through the garden of orange tomatoes, i see

One of the most bizarre (but brilliant) hour long mixes I've ever downloaded !!!
"Cloud Nine"
Roy Orbison - In Dreams / Takeshi Terauchi & The Bunnys - Theme from Symphony No. 5 / Patti Smith - Poem for Jim Morrison / The Marvelettes - After All / Wendy Carlos - Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 / John Cage - Mushroom Haiku / Charlie Fox And The Ring Of Sound - Eleanor Rigby / Charles Bukowski - Cloud Nine, I Live in a Neighborhood of Murderers, Two Horse Collars / Niagara - Sangandongo / Jack Kerouac (read by Michael Gizzi & Clark Coolidge) - Old Angel Midnight / Cat Power - House of the Rising Sun / Spirit - Taurus / Jake Holmes - Dazed and Confused / Juana Molena - Michel / The Kinks - Lola (Instrumental) / Sylvia Plath - Daddy / Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers - Egyptian Reggae / Susan Howe - There is No Good on Earth and Sin is But a Name / The Dreamletts - Really Now / Prince Buster - Islam / The Love Sitars - Paint It Black / Bobby Seal - Filmore East speech / Faust - Krautrock / James Joyce - Finnegans Wake / Audrey Hepburn - Moon River / Colonel Bagshot - Six Day War / The Knife - Neverland / Salvador Dali - Apoth du dollar / Jean-Luc Godard - Interviewed by Serge Daney / Goblin - Snip-Snap / Kathleen Cleaver - Filmore Ease speech / Hawkwind - Master Of The Universe / Abbie Hoffman - The Drug Co. / Dorothy Ashby - My Favourite Things / Ken Kesey - A Brief Disclosure
Yep - this goes from Dali to Hawkwind, Hepburn to The Knife !!
But we don't have Out Absentia, which apparently is an alternative version I hadn't known about.
And it was only the works from 1999 onwards.
Correction: Mr. Duncan has provided me with The Incomplete Works.
And he seemed so honest and plausible as he handed the CD over.

I always found this tidbit about the origin of the Sisterhood name pretty amusing, poor Mr. Hussey eh ;):
Meanwhile, Eldritch protested their usage of Sisterhood name as too similar to The Sisters of Mercy and a name that had been applied to the fan community of The Sisters of Mercy, and in an attempt to stop the practice released the single Giving Ground by his own band, The Sisterhood. The single was later followed by the album Gift. The other band eventually christened themselves The Mission amidst suspicions that the whole affair had been a PR stunt to jumpstart The Mission's career.

The Sisterhood
"Finland Red, Egypt White"
As listed in full in a prev post, the lyrics are amazing. Rather than any sort of song format it's simply armament specs from the AK-47 read out in a monotone voice over a hard and heavy drum machine and sparse synth backing.
The weird thing is that the way the words are used and, in only a couple of places, repeated the track takes on a really ominous air and by the time the line "destroy personnel" is tripled at the end it's really grim and powerful.
Utter genius.
