Went out and got seriously fucked last night. On my way back home this morning decided to listen to Confessions all the way through and it reminded me just how amazing the album is and I even noticed a few little sounds I hadnt before!

Coil
"I don't want to be the one"
"Mu-Ur" (23min !)
both from 'Astral Disaster - Eskaton'
Every now and then, when I've been gushing about an artist for a while I search out a review that somebody else has done about what I'm about to write about, just so you get a second opinion. So, er, here's that very thing:-
Sole concession to actual songs per se, "I Don`t Want To Be The One", is absolutely fucking beautiful. Strings and electronics blend into a backing someone like Michael Nyman could do if he was less whimsical and more - well, more fucked. And evil. Imagine Peter Greenaway making a horror film. Imagine Nyman's soundtrack. Think "fuck, yes!" and listen to this track. It's ace. And that's without even mentioning Balance's characteristically sinister vocals, beginning barely above mumble level and elevating to howls and shrieks by the end. It all leaves you quite out of breath, and you need a good chilling out session. Which closer "MU-UR" seems to offer.
Only this being Coil, chilling takes on a whole new meaning, and by the time the fleetingly lovely piano phrase at the end begins to decay and distort, the Great Old Ones themselves could pop over to borrow a cup of sugar and you wouldn't bat an eyelid. It's right too - spot on the musical money !

Coil
"Fire of the Mind"
from 'The Ape of Naples'
"Does death come alone or with eager reinforcements"
Beautiful neo-folk lament about death and it's place in the world - pipes, hurdy gurdy and electronic washes. It's ironic as this was the last album made before/after Jhonns death. When you watch the news and read the paper the above lyric line seems to make more and more sense every year........ sigh.

The Threshold HouseBoys Choir (under the direction of Peter Christopherson)
"So Young It Knows No Maturing"
Heavily processed chants, words & choirs swirl and chop under & through washes and an imploring bass to bring a quite glorious track that manages to be beautiful, eerie and remarkably other-worldly. It's the first thing I've heard of this post-Coil project that "Sleazy" is doing and it has every indication that it's not stopping the regular reaction of jaw-dropping achieved previously.
Quite, quite astounding !

I'm 99% sure they were all right - as a "Various Artists" album (in effect, that's what it is) the only way for it to hold together on a (insert generic mp3 player name here) is to have the same artist and album name through all tracks and the actual details on the title, otherwise it all gets mixed throughout the list of artists and really louses things up.
That's my methodology, anyhow !

We`re all so desperate to finish for Xmas, it`s affected our brains and our music choices have gone a bit skits-up. This morning started well with Roxy Music, progressed to Billy Idol, Menswear and Pulp and finished with Mariah Carey. I`m digging my CDs out this afternoon.

finally getting a bit of recognition - on some of the top 10 lists of the year. I don't understand the lack of interest of this album - it is amazing stuff. It needs time though. don't give up on it. It's like music from another dimension with no human reference to it. I don't know what it is - but this woman thinks in a way that has not yet been heard in music. I think it frustrates people. It facinates me.
