True story. I was round my friend's front room once and his brother was playing Tetris on the game boy. His Granddad (originally from Belarus) was sat in the corner singing along to the Tetris tune - its some Russian folk song apparently. Absolutely hilarious.

"Batwings (A Limnal Hymn)"
Utterly beautiful, yet completely terrifying. Compelling beyond words or music. The latter end, after the spoken lyrics below, was sung in a language known only to Johnn Balance himself and remains one of the most beautiful things ever recorded. I've been listening to a lot of Coil recently after reading an obit for Balance that I'd not seen before. If anybody wants this track, to hear for themselves, then yell out, ok ?
(The key to joy is disobedience
There is no guilt and there is no shame)
A moon-piece to fetch up the golden cup
A snow-piece to avoid the great heat of the sun
Is kept in the night and by the light of the moon
An ice-piece so as they seem forever fallen
A night-piece of the dismal supper and strange entertainment
A rare chance-piece, a handsome piece of deformity
The skin of a snake bred out of the spinal marrow of a man
With stones and illegible inscriptions found about great ruins
Pictures of three remarkable steeples, or towers
Built purposely awry, so as they seem eternally tipping and falling
A transcendent perfume made of the richest odorates
Kept in a box of translucent scale
A glass of spirits made of ethereal salt, hermetically sealed up
Kept continually in quicksilver, of so volatile a nature
That it will scarcely endure the light
And therefore only shown in winter
Or by the light of a carbuncle, or a firefly
And batwings
And batwings
And batwings sing this limnal hymn
A wideness opening and closing to keep the darkness sealed within
To keep the darkness sealed within
To keep the darkness sealed within
To keep the darkness sealed within
A moon-piece to fetch up the golden cup
Such things the ears were made for, such makers made not for this world.

"The First 5 Minutes After Violent Death"
from 'Horse Rotorvator'
Always wondered what a "horse rotorvator" was and found a quote to the text on the original LP. Now I know but I'm not sure I wanted to:-
On the Eve of the Apocalypse - (the air choked with horsehair) - the Four Horsemen betray their steeds - slitting open the animal [sic] throats - and in doing so release the Second Great Deluge - Horsegore - Infinite Divisibles Split - an infinity of open sewers - the Four then fashion an immense eathmoving device from the collective jawbones - The Horse Rotorvator - with which to plough up the waiting world - (ROTA turns through 180° to TARO) - wheels replace horses - Dark Horses Run - Dark Horses Run Deep - and Hell is paved with horseflesh... That title track is supposedly possible to synchronise with a certain film (I've forgotten which) that they were jamming to at the time. May be an urban myth but I'd like to find out what it is and try it !

I have to be careful with things Anneke related - I can get stuck in their stuff and end up going through most of their albums in one stretch. I nearly did the other day after digging out "If_Then_Else" and realising what a great album it is....
Actually, thinking about it, that's no bad thing ! :p

Coil
"Copal"
from 'Moons Milk in Four Phases - Bonus Disc'
How scary is this !
17mins of ambience and ringing-bowl chimes but managing a massively oppressive mood. Bad enough (even though genius) but tucked away in the middle is Johnn intoning the following words in a terrified spoken word style. almost as if in the middle of some awful manic episode:-
Looking upon it with a sense of dread
Facing it with a sense of dread
Gazing upon it with a sense of dread
Looking upon it with a sense of dread
Facing it with a sense of dread
Larks, carrion crows, ortolans
Turkeys, peacocks, guinea-fowl
Robin Redbreast, thrushes, swans
Edible birds uttering horrible cries
Nocturnal birds, boiled owls
Nocturnal birds, boiled owls
Edible birds uttering horrible cries
Could you swuu--
Could you even swallow a boiled owl?
Could you even swallow a boiled owl?
Could you even swallow a boiled owl?
Could you even swallow a boiled owl?
Looking upon it with a sense of dread
Gazing upon it with a sense of dread
Looking right upon it with a sense of dread
During this the sound of squelching flesh, as if something is tucking into something else ravenously, keeps coming centre stage.
I mean "Boiled owl" and "Edible birds uttering horrible cries", where the heck does all that come from !
Consider the Carpy suitably freaked out ! :p
Hmm...
Psyclon Nine - Bellum In Abyssus
45 seconds of solid male and female screams of agony. Strangely compelling.
You know what, apart from Anneke bonuses, we need to start introducing Sharon Den Adel bonuses, because I say so.

I'm listening to a Beatles bootleg CD called The Abbey Road Sessions. Some interesting alternative versions on here - Maxwell's Silver Hammer full of nonsense words, Oh Darling with John Lennon singing improvised words about Yoko's divorce coming through. There are excellent straight forward alternative takes too - such as an early take of You Never Give Me Your Money with a great instrumental.

Coil
"The Last Amethyst Deceiver"
from 'The Ape Of Naples'
I find it so hard listening to this album knowing it was finished and put together by Sleazy after Johnns death. Christ, that must have been painful for him after their history both inside and outside of Coil. So many beautiful orchestrations and prophetic lyrics that it almost hurts to think too much about it. You can hear the love between the tears on the production and respect in the final version. "Pay your respects to the vultures, for they are your future..."
That the last track is a working of the "Are You Being Served..?" theme tune into a threnody of funereal dirge and solemnity goes to show how stupidly ahead of the game they were and, to an extent, still are.

Coil
"Remote Viewing 1"
from 'The Remote Viewer'
Published as a limited CD-R to be sold at their recent European appearances, Coil's latest EP is a beautiful and stunning piece of work. It consists of a nearly 20 minute instrumental piece in two versions—a "prepared" improvisation with their current tour lineup: Michael York on breton pipes, Cliff Stapleton on hurdy gurdy and a subtile, percussive groove underlayed by various electronic devices of Mr's. Balance, Christopherson and Norris. The main feeling this recording conjurs up for me is one of an unexperienced nostalgia—like an unsure longing for life during an ancient time. Danny Hyde returns to Coil's mixing desk to collaborate on "Remote Viewing 3" and the interlude, "Remote Viewing 2," which seems to be constructed mainly out of parts of the original recording session with added and altered sounds and vocal snippets.

"Snow Falls into Military Temples"
from '...And the Ambulance Died In His Arms'
Carpys complete inability to play anything but Coil continues apace. Five days now where pretty much the only music I've played has been Coil. I guess it's just that time of year combined with the anniversary of Jhonns death and therefore seeing a few mentions dotted about. Either way it's a whole heap of beautiful, scary, funny, devastating, bizarre, glorious and unfathomable works that will one day get the recognition they deserve. Hopefully.
This one is the last Coil things released, a live album of their performance as part of the Autechre-curated All Tomorrow's Parties festival, weekend of April 6, 2003.
Front cover (below) is that of Jhonn in full live flow on a set of songs never performed before or since.

Well damm; I opened Pandora's box.
White Rainbow is just one busy track; soulful, yet arid. Middle Eastern, yet tied down hard to the soil of Celtic Britan. High-Tech, yet organic to the point of being cthonic.
And that ending...like the earliest days of Electronic Music and Musique Concrete.
I remember Coil from their Tainted Love cover video (...wham wham) on a Some Bizzare video sampler that was shown on the awesome Night Flight show that was on the USA Network in the early '80's.
