I'm considering going to see them seeming as you love them so much, but tickets seemed expensive for such a gig.

The big question is: do the die-hards like or loathe 'You're Gorgeous'?

Well due to a promotional fuck up they cancelled the original gig I was going to! :Hard work when you've coincided it with a journey up north. So good job my sister had a baby or the weekend would have been a bit deflated. Thing is the gigs aren't on weekends so i'm going to miss out.

His first albums (the 5 lo-fi albums) are genius. I'd save you cash and buy the 'Original Lo-Fi' box set intsead of going to see him live.

The following albums, 'Ugly Beautiful' onwards, have been a painful journey. Ironic pop gets a bit bitter and irritating after a while. He hates 'You're Gorgeous' and most fans only like it for the fact millions of dim people bought it their partners without really understanding what the lyrics were about. :)

Each album since has brought the odd gem, 'Bad old Man', 'first man on the moon', 'Eyes in the back of your head', etc... but i bnever really liked them.

Also the first were done in his bedroom and the rest with a band so obviously the Babybird live experience is not always great for die hard fans. You could never get those first albums to work live. Add the fact Steven is pretty uncomfortable on stage he usually ends up trying to hard and sounding like a pub singer.

But he new album is probably his best studio album yet. The guys obviously in love as it's almost 'sweet' in places he seems quite chilled.

Although I love his lo-fi albums, he's also a great pop song writer. (See Lightning Seeds - his tracks were the best on each of the last albums!) so thats probably why he persists in these grand pop rock albums when really all the fans want him to go back into bedsit land with a 4 track! ;) H e could make a fortune writing stuff for pop bands.

Cheers for that. He wasn't in the Lightning Seeds though was he? I thought I'd have known that. They were my favourite band when I was in school.

re: Baby Bird
The big question is: do the die-hards like or loathe 'You're Gorgeous'?

I loved it when I first heard it. It was depressing how it sold by the bucketload to dull couples in matching shell suits who thought the Lighthouse Family were the zenith of popular music. I can`t really listen to it now.

"Bad Shave" and "Fatherhood" are probably the best of the early albums, although they`re all brill. I love "Cooling Towers" off "Fatherhood" and "Valerie" off "Bad Shave".

Who'd have thought you'd see their keyboard player again. ;-)

No he wasn't in the band but tracks 'Sugar Coated Iceberg' and 'City Bright Stars' are both written by Steven Jones.

PS: Peppermintpig - we have very similar record collections i reckon. ;)

The Original Lo-Fi box set is great as yu get an unreleased album of lo-fi with the excellent 'Drunk Car' and plain creapy 'I wanna be you Jesus Christ'.

I love it when people say that! It gives a satisfying oeuvre of kindred spirit-ness that lifts my mood. It`s almost certainly true too - almost every time you post in this topic I think "Ooooh, I`ve got that!" or "Oooh, I nearly bought that!" etc. etc.

There's a plug-in for Winamp that allows people to play the original SID music files.

However, if you can only play MP3s right now, there's a website where people upload their redone versions of the music with proper keyboards/sequencers/guiters/etc.:

http://remix.kwed.org/

Chimera:

http://remix.kwed.org/files/RKOfiles/Boz%20-%20Chimera%20(title%20theme).mp3

Thrust:

Thrust (rock version):

Both originally by the CBM64 musical genius that is Rob Hubbard.
