CAN
>>Delay<< 1968 (SACD Remaster)
Blimey, I know I posted a while ago about how everything came from Can but this is getting silly. This album was 1968 yet features most of the Artic Monkeys backline sound - just listen to the chopped out drumming from Jaki Liebeszeit. Seems that scummy men existed in the late 60's too......

CAN
Landed (1975) (SACD Remaster)
"Vernal Equinox"
It's very odd but some of the very, very early synth runs (Irmin Schmidt on a now museum piece Alpha 77) on this track are almost exactly the same as some of the styles used to remix Depeche Modes first few singles into 12" versions.
Strange. Really no escaping this lot, is there.

Mixing the Angel
Stephanie/brandyncoke/whoever else - let me know if you have this yet and if not I'll throw it your way(s). It's the latest album but entirely remixed into a new version. Some tracks even weave old Mode stuff subtly into them. To be honest I prefer most of the tracks on here to the original ones !!

CAN
Soon Over Babaluma (1974)(SACD Remaster)
"Chain Reaction / Quantum Physics"
....or, to use the "Friends" style of naming things:-
"The One Where CAN Invented Detroit Techno 10 Years Before Detroit Knew It Existed".
The two tracks which make up the closing 18min+ of the album - "Chain Reaction" strolls seemingly without effort through funk and proto-disco, locking in grooves that would have kept The Studio going, nevermind their studio.
"Quantum Physics", however, sees Hillage meet Kraftwerk head-on with an organic form of techno before such thing had even been named, let alone given a home in Detroit of the mid-80's, mixing spacey atomic-level ambience with early synth work. Bands like System7 or The Orb owe their careers to this track and somebody like Carl Craig, Richie "Plastikman" Hawtin or Derrick May could splice some of this into a set with some ease.
Fancy dancing on the moon to something old-school ?
This is your puppy.
N.B. Carpathian reserves the right to waffle on about music in this thread as he loves it and simply wants others to delve in and get the bug too.

I heard that - what a great bunch of people they are, I bet you could go out drinking with them and have a right laugh. Don`t you think she should rename it the "Gnarls Barkley" lounge, seeing as they`re the third band in a row to cover "Crazy" and almost certainly not the last?
Speaking of Gnarls Barkley, does anyone else think his (their?) new song is miles better than "Crazy"? is it called Smiley Faces? It`s amazing, full of bright lovely light and jet black shadows, it sounds like a Northern Soul record.

The album is seriously good - far, far better than it deserves to be on the back of such a huuuuuuuuuge lead single. He's got a great voice and it's obvious they don't take themselves too seriously either.

People who don't like Radiohead are retarded.
Normally I don't go for sweeping statements with regards to bands....but that is pretty much correct.
It also has to be realised that a lot of Radioheads output would not exist but for some of CAN's material some 20years before.
Both those facts are, luckily, not mutually exclusive.

Awww, I love it how you NEVER let it lie! :D :D
It`s so true though. After hearing Can I actually became embarrassed by some of my favourite groups at the time. Even Cocteau Twins, a band who are seemingly bereft of any influences whatsoever, give a few nods in their direction (eg. "Blind Dumb Deaf", "Tinderbox (Of A Heart)"). I guess that I've recognised this before but recently it's really dawned on me just how much it's true.
When one band can strongly influence things as diverse as System7 and the Orb on one hand, right through to Radiohead, Stereolab and even Joy Division on the other then it's a pretty weighty legacy.
Even heard some synth lines from a mid-70's CAN track "borrowed" in a DM remix the other day.

I watched my DVD for the first time last week... My parents where doing things around... They told me "Music has been getting so violent now... We didn't have that when we were young!"
Some people's mind can be very selective....! Music has been violent for ages!
(and The Dresden Dolls are not violent in my opinion..... punchy maybe)

I'm actually listining to it right now and i can tell from the first song it's like a big dirty fusion of electic guitars and throbbing synthesizers!

Does anyone not agree they are slightely under-rated?
I've just started listening to their old stuff and they are amazingly talented!
All their songs are so epic! Maybe that's a bad thing though, i mean it's never music you can just listen to in the background, it always demands your full attention.
Anyway i'm also listening to: Modest Mouse - Float On
