It'a a really pretty evening, nice and cool, and I'm feeling very nicely chilled. Listening to REM's gorgeous Automatic for the People to make me feel even more relaxed. Skipped 'Everybody Hurts' cos I've listened to it too much, but 'Star Me Kitten' is on right now, and I think that this might just be the dreamiest song ever. It's so lush and tranquil. Mmmm, glad to listen to this album again, it's been a while since i listened to it last.

It's been the soundtrack to the weekend (sorry nieghbours!!!!)
...they are a german electro-punk-pop band... kinda like female fronted shouty Bis/Peaches/Deus/FranzFerdinand type thing (and that's a tight squezze!!) ...but it's so brillinatly UP and unselfconscious!!! No one is doing this in the UK, I would so love to see them live but they only tour Germany!!! oh! Berlin we should do a Goldfrapp meet there!!!

Right now: The Neptune's Clones album. There some good songs on here, but some of it is a bit boring.
I really liked NERD at first but haven't listened to it in ages. The Neptunes 'sound' is getting a bit boring now isn't it?

Really love this album, just a great set of tunes. Never used to think that much of it, cos next to Sgt. Pepper's, Revolver, Magical Mystery Tour and the White Album it really isn't that special, but on its own terms, it's simply just a class album.

i love that song "since i left you". i listen to it all the time. it has a really great bittersweet and nostalgic feel. it has that feeling to it that you get at the end of summer on one of those last really sunny and warm days when you realise the summer is almost over. if that makes any sense.

Cerys Matthews went in and out of rehab, then had a baby, then released a folk-style solo record ('Cock-a-hoop'), which did nothing, which brings us up to date... Oh and Catatonia's guitarist teached at my housemate's old school before leaving upo getting a record deal.
Tatty - whats up with Sleeper? I picked it up second hand for a couple of quid the other day, I could just remember liking the singles, I'm re-appraising Britpop at the mo. A lot is rubbish but, its so much better than what is in the charts at the mo. it has an iota of artistic merit. That number one is dreadful: 'Fuck off you slag' or something... You can't even hear it so much is edited out.

:D classic of a tune Elska, im listening to the track that comes before that, army dreamers :( should stop listening to kate bush she can be a tad depressing.
probably my favourite track on the album (even though Delius and Blow Away get pretty close, too), though you're right, it's really, really sad...but most of my favourite songs are sad anyway.
diamente
28-04-2004, 17:14
Well, I'm listening to something that's the total opposite of depressing. 'Top Jimmy' by Van Halen, which is poodle-haired guitar rock at its most fun! Plus, my name's Jimi, so there's a fair amount of amusement listening to the lyrics, especially the line:
'Top Jimmy swings, he's got the love'
not to mention the end of the song, where all the band just yell 'Oohhhhh, Jimmy!'
Of course, if MTV-endorsed pop metal from the 80's just isn't your sort of thing, then this song'll probably be more depressing than 'Exit Music (For a Film)' by Radiohead.

Yeah, Blow Away and Delius are my faves on the album, and I really love Egypt too.
sad songs are a penchant of mine too, that or songs of absolute joy. I think this is the reason i love the Yoshimi album by The Flaming Lips, which is both extremely exhilarating and extremely melancholy all in one.

Yeah, I hate the whole Radiohead are miserable bastards thing, though Exit Music would not be the first thing i played to an unbeliever to quell their assumptions, as its rather bleak! I remember that episode of Father Ted where that miserable priest learns how to experience joy in life, and then is dragged right back down into the dumps when he listens to Exit Music on the way back home from Craggy Island!
But songs like Planet Telex, Subterrenean Homesick Alien, The Tourist, Nice Dream, Sail to the Moon and Meeting in the Aisle are just beyond beautiful, really, really gorgeous. And I Might Be Wrong is a funky bastard.
Still, it's the Smiths that get the worst rep for that kind of miserability (is that a word?), though that's mainly due to songs like Heaven Knows I'm MISERABLE now and How Soon is Now being the only ones most people have heard. The Smiths happen to be one of the funniest bands ever, and that's in a good way, and some of their songs, like Sheila Take a Bow, just make me want to throw my homework on the fire, and take a chance with a couple of kooks hung up on romancing......

Yeah, half an hour was such a tease, wasn't it? I wants more!
Feeling embarrassed, but I'm listening to the outrageously OTT 'Ghostdancing' by Simple Minds, which was made during their 'stopped being good, started growing mullets' phase. I love the song mind, and I'm thoroughly enjoying listening to it now. Makes me wanna grow the ol mullet, get shoulder pads, and get me and the non existent band to the top of a mountain and blast out empty powerchords. Sorry, I'm blabbering.

Mmmmmyeah, forbidden donut. Gotta love it! It's sacre-licious, i tells you.
Listening to the utterly splendid 'Crystal Days' by Echo and the Bunnymen, which for some reason, I picture being the soundtrack to some piss-up in a pirate movie. The hero's just come back from defeating the evil villain, and now he's getting well and truly plastered with his mates and the townspeople, and 'Crystal Days' is playing on in the, er...stereo. Ever since seeing 14th century folk boogie to 'Golden Years' by David Bowie in A Knight's Tale, anything is possible.

I know what you mean! Sure, the Radiohead film Meeting People is Easy gave a pretty gloomy picture of the band, but that was years ago! The people who think Radiohead are miserable should have a listen to the music scene around here, most Finnish songs are about cheery subjects like mortality, and that's the music that charts!
I'm listening to Waist by Sonic Youth, from Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, which was my favourite album when I was about 14 and, amazingly, still sounds really, really, good to me!

'Winter' by The Rolling Stones. Now I usually listen to the Stones for rock and funk and a good time, but this is one of the few Stones songs that's genuinely lovely and really, really sweet. Some of the Stones ballads seem a little disingenuous, especially when you've got a lead singer like Mick Jagger, but this is great!

Spooky! I've been listening to the Apollo soundtrack a lot today as well, along with the Blade Runner soundtrack too for maximum bliss.
Heh heh, The Lost Boys soundtrack is a mixed bag. Some of it is truly divine (I Still Believe, Beauty Has Her Way, Lost in the Shadows, Good Times are superb in their own silly way) and some of it is not, like that rotten Roger Daltrey version of Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me, that lame song that uses a load of baseball metaphors (it's playing in the video store in the film) and then there's Cry Little Sister, which sounds fantastic in the film when they just have the children's vocals on it (dead spooky) but is made a little lame by having some prat sing silly lyrics all over it on the album.
Oh, and People are Strange by my beloved Bunnymen. Probably one of their weakest songs, yet one of their most successful. What a world....

I hope the studying's going sweet, Elska, though I always found a little music helped me to study. Nothing too good though, cos then I would just forget what I'm reading and jump around my bedroom playing air guitar to Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven'. Eeek, I've said too much.
Anyway, I'm taking a trip down nostalgia lane (not good for someone who's only 22) and listening to Mansun's superb Attack of the Grey Lantern, which still sounds very lush and excellent today. Phew.
Heh heh. I love the fact that the guitar riff to 'She Makes My Nose Bleed' is very, very, very similar to the one in Bryan Adams' 'Run to You'. That's why I loved this group, they always paid reference to the true greats.

The album was well worth the act of pouncage, as it's rather fantastic. Anyone here heard it? YES YES YES!!! It's one of my favourite albums! I know some people on here think it's a bit overrated, but I love it from start to finish.
Highlights for me:
> Anything with harps or plucked strings in it
> Hands - where the beat first comes in and gives some pattern to the jazz noodling sample
> The off beat sample that comes in about 1m30s into She Moves She
> First Thing
> Unspoken - the way it builds up, gets a bit mad about half way through, then just drops back to the essentials - gorgeous piano loop as well
> The stripped out breaks all through As Serious As Your Life Is
> The rhythms and tunings used all through And They Look Broken Hearted - I just love this track...
> The squeaky toy on Slow Jam
Truly an exceptional album - worth every penny. Amazon.co.uk have it for £6.97 at the moment, by the way... I still don't resent paying £12 for it though.
By the way, surprise surprise - that's what I'm listening to at the moment...

Suspiria intro by Goblin, from the soundtrack of the horror film Suspiria, from my soundtrack tune compilation...The track sounds very creepy, in a fantastic sort of way!
diamente
19-05-2004, 09:55
Wow, Suspiria's soundtrack kicks arse completely! It's probably the best horror film ever in my opinion, and the music is astonishing. I love Goblin's music for Dario Argento's films, especially the stuff from Deep Red, which is like scary and funky at the same time! And the main theme tune from Tenebrae, which is really catchy and cool.
Well, I haven't actually seen the film, but if the soundtrack is anything to go by (and it usually is) it's got to be a great and very frightening film!
Now playing Bullit main theme by Lalo Schifrin...turning to Rosemary's Baby sung by Mia Farrow in a few seconds...what avery Goldfrappy sound that latter one has!

19-05-2004, 10:05
Oooo, see it Elska, it's a superb film, but it divides opinion harshly. People I know either think it's fantastic or a load of rubbish. I think it's a masterpiece, and I don't think there's been a horror film (or many films, come to think of it) that looks as good as this one, with the exception of Inferno, which is a semi-sequel to Suspiria, which is not as good, but looks beautiful.
