Yeah, I don't know why she didn't break through. Whenever I play the album to friends they all seem to like it. I love ‘My Heartbeat’ the best I think.

I hope she has got another on the way. Maybe second time lucky?

Real to real cacophony by Simple Minds. Please don't laugh...early simple minds stuff is top quality and seriously underrated. I always just thought they were a bad stadium rock band when i was younger, but the late seventies to early eighties stuff is great! Anyone who hasn't heard New Gold Dream is missing out on a fantastic album! Anything after Sparkle in the Rain isn't too hot, except for 'Don't You Forget About Me', of course: the curse of nostalgia...
The "Sons and Fascination" / "Sister Feelings Call" double is wonderfull !!
'Sweat In Bullet', '70 Cities as Love Takes The Fall', 'In Trance As Mission'.....all great stuff !
Totally different from their later stadium bloat-rock - all early 80's sleekness and, yet again on here, another band with some great fledgling synth kit !
Aaah, the nostalgia ! :p

have you ever heard of this singer called Harry? as one of her Bsides she covered that.
I just looked her up - Bloody Hell, she was hard to find on the internet! She sounds really interesting actually, and she also covered another of my favourite songs from the 1980s, "Imagination" by Belouis Some.

I'd forgotten how great these were though - such early analog synth sounds, all posturing and sleek. Christ, how time and money ruined them !

Don't get too hopeful, Mr Piggy sir.
She was a terrible concoction of blonde hair and mock attitude which reeked of record company assemble-by-numbers. Every video had her being all sexy and whatever but they forgot that fades quickly and the music, to be honest, was pretty dire.
Appeared, hyped, fizzled and vanished again.

ooh my favourite old Simple Minds songs are "Sweat In Bullets" and "Love Song" (i`m not sure "Sweat In Bullets" is the right title actually, but that`s how it`s written on the album) I also love "All The Things She Said". I believe they were kind of friends with the Cocteau Twins at one time - hard to believe!

Some Piano Magic, courtesy of Stephanie. I promised to comment so, in increasing order of enjoyment denoted by the traffic light colour system, we have:-
The End Of A Dark, Tired Year - Very good, but purely because I love the Cure ! Verging on being a Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me tribute track and really blatant about it too.
Night Of The Hunter - Doesn't really go anywhere but meanders about nicely enough. Kinda vanishes as soon as it finishes - like this text on this background.
Theory Of Ghosts - Veering into post-rock land. His lyrics fit the mood but I'd love to hear this as an instrumental to the opening pan of a movie on the big screen !
Disaffected - Love her vocals. A weird play between the electronic glitch-tech and the strummed retro chic. Works surprisingly well though especially when the two collide for the last third !
Luxembourg Gardens - Utterly gorgeous and wonderfully controlled. Quite eerie too at the same time. Top stuff and my favourite of the bunch by a long stretch.

It was 3/5 but with 1 of those 3 being a direct hit - that's not bad at all !
Once you hear the Cure-ness in it it's hard to miss - everything, down to the little guitar fills, is exactly like them. Obviously not having happy-Bob's vocals detracts but it's the very first thing I heard. Only in that one track though !

Yes, Luxembourg Gardens is one of my absolute favorites of theirs. I'm soo glad you enjoyed it. I read somewhere that during the writing of the song "Disaffected" Glen was listening to a lot of 12" Depeche Mode remixes. To be honest 'Writers with Homes' is my fave (and it was one of the ones that was least recommened - saw it for £2 on ebay). Disaffected sounds good but doesn't do it for me (think it's his voice). Giving it another try now.

I'm never embarrassed admitting any of my musical listens but I almost feel bad for posting, yet again, that I'm listening to "A Noise Severe" taken from (here comes the obvious) 'Home', the new album from The Gathering.
I must sound like a bloody cracked record (or near-spam) this last week or so. It's just that when you're a huge fan of a band and they nail an album exactly how you'd love it to be you just can't help wanting to share that feeling. I've fifteen Gathering CD's and this new one sits pretty much atop that pile. Hence the gushing !
Sorry :p

Tatt, it wasn't me but I did contribute to that thread at the time. Funnily enough, I don't have 'Writers without Homes'. But Piano Magic just released a new ep called "Incurable". It's just four new tracks but I'm probably going to buy it along with some of their older stuff that I don't have (incl. Writers without Homes). I didn't like his voice either when I first heard their music, but to be honest it grew on me. His voice has this emotive fragility, that just really fit with the tunes and lyrics.
Did you get any Durritti Column?
I remember your post about recommending quite an expensive compilation of theirs. I still might take you up on that, although is there a more affordable introduction that you can suggest? I think the comment was made as to "blowing my brain out to buy all those expensive comps". :)

It's growing on me every time I hear it. It's really unfussy and basic but I quite like the sound of it that I can only really describe as 'waterry'! It's like the next step from all that French Disco stuff from a while back (which I know we had a chat about).

Fantastic song; everybody always mentions that they like Dummy better - while it was certainly an amazing cd, the self-titled captivated me even more in many ways, one of which was the general level of creepiness which is showcased so well in this track.

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness (http://www.chosendarkness.com) - "We Choose Faces"
from 'Fear Is On Our Side' (http://www.discogs.com/release/634229)
One of my top albums of the year so far - like taking the better end of the current crop of 'indie' bands and marrying it to the post-rock scene, only with a Canadian seal of quality. Post-rock with tunes and lyrics, I guess, in a nutshell. As debut albums go it's as good as anything being raved about this side of the pond.
