Dennis Wilson: Pacific Ocean Blue

Just come back from a mate's birthday get-together, went to a resturant and ate far too much. I should have stopped after the ribs in barbecue sauce, but I just had to go for the Chocolatey Hot Fudge Brownie Puke Inducer dessert. tasted lovely but now I feel as though I've just travelled back in time or something. I'm well out of it. I didn't think you could get drunk on food but I feel particularly wasted.

05-04-2004, 22:17
ah, so you've gotten the new blue states? how do you like it? do you like "season song"? i love it. i like that epic, slightly anthemic feel it has with the children's chorus bit. very cool. oh, and i love alphabet street. now i'm listening to "anna's song" by marvin gaye.

diamente
05-04-2004, 22:21
Very, very nice album this is. 'What We've Won', 'Only Today' and 'Doublespeak' are my favourites, as is 'Season Song', very, very excellent indeed! Yay, i got the album for about five quid in London, i more or less POUNCED on it, which was a tad unnecessary, as there were about twenty copies on the shelf.

Oooo, 'Anna's Song', what a song.....making love.....all night long...

Marvin Gaye drinking game: One shot for every mention of the words 'Sugar', 'Honey', 'Baby' or 'Love'. Try it on the I Want You or Lets Get it On albums. You'll be wasted by the third verse.

themoodfits
05-04-2004, 22:23
so true. personally, i love it in "i want you" when he whispers all sexy "sweet darling..." i just love that part. i'll have to play that drinking game, but all his songs are so horny i'll be all drunk and sexed up and want to fuck. i'll have to play with someone hot. now listening to "i want you" for the part i mentioned above.

themoodfits
05-04-2004, 22:35
cosmo vittelli is this i think italian guy who works with alot of those french producers. very good album. kind of electro meets stevie wonder with some really cool sexy computer balads on it. i say check it out. i've been listening to it alot lately. the richard x album is sooooooo good. kind of my version of pop music. some of it is like future r&b. some electro-ish stuff. i think most of the songs are either samples or covers altogether. he does a cover of the burt bacharach classic "walk on by" with deborah evans-strickland that is like a love song for sad robots. he samples "fade into you" by mazzy star and has jarvis cocker singing duet with hope and turns it into this weird future balad. such a cool album. not one bad song on it. i recommend it highly.

Zero 7: When it Falls
Japan: upcoming Hansa reissues
Basement Jaxx: Remedy/Kish Kash

Aww - I love that track! It's basically a quirky electro-house thing with some tasty samples breaks here and there and a spoken male vocal - some old scene has-been getting all worked up about losing it ;). Very catchy... in fact I'm going to have to listen to it now...

LCD Soundsystem is a solo project by James Murphy from DFA - I'm sure you know them moody, they're based in New York - Murphy is a native New-Yorker, I think (used to be part of the punk scene iirc), and I'm pretty sure Tim Goldsworthy is from the UK somewhere... They did a few good remixes (Metro Area was one I think), and produced The Rapture's album. That's about all I can think of at the moment...

LCD Soundsystem: "Losing My Edge"
LCD Soundsystem is Murphy's own project, and "Losing My Edge" is about 80% of why people have noticed DFA-- it's flown through the file-sharing ether not only on its strength as a killer track, but because it's something of a hipster in-joke as well. What's so amazing about it is how seamlessly Murphy's married both the sounds and the moods of rock and dance: the song opens with a hard-edged Casiotone groove, morphs perfectly across to fuzzed-out bass and live drums, and then heads straight back to banging electro.

Over a six-minute build, Murphy puts on his best deadpan and tell us all about his edge and how he's losing it. He "was there" at a 1968 Can gig; he was at the first Suicide rehearsals, the first Captain Beefheart sessions-- and now he can hear the encroaching footsteps of the kids, with their "borrowed nostalgia for the unremembered 80s." And right when the loose-limbed robot-rock seems ready to explode, he launches into a credit list-- This Heat, Althea and Donna, The Normal-- and a chord upsweep that either puts your hands in the air or bangs your head cedes to a diva refrain: "We all know what you really want." It's both hilarious and musically spot-on...

Listening to From the Lion's Mouth by The Sound. I read a bit about this band a few years back, about how appallingly underrated they were back in the early eighties. This is meant to be their best album, and I only just managed to get my hands on it, and wow! Well worth the wait.

Sounds like a mix between Joy Division, Echo and the Bunnymen and early U2. And it sounds frickin' superb. Glad i got it. I love it when albums just get you immediately, and this one did the job.

Still BRMC - I hope I'm not jumping from one obsession to another... ;) Although I had a break from BRMC with a bit of my own music - comparing it with other music is really good for pointing out faults... :) Lots of ideas to work on now.... I reckon I probably still at least a year off getting my music how I want it to sound...

ahhhhh.....tracey thorn! that voice. she has one of the most beautiful voices i've ever heard. just pure and clear and lovely. the version frankie is talking about is the eno mix. long intro of rain and then tracey's voice just kind of washes in with the rain and echoes around beautifully. a really stunning remix. anyway, now i'm listening to more everything but the girl stuff. their cover of "only living boy in new york". sooooooo gorgeous.

right now i'm listenignt to probably the whitest dance music ever made by three black women: "neutron dance" by the pointer sisters. i picked up their greatest hits cd in a used bargain bin for 2 dollars as a laugh, but there are actually a few gems on here. "if you wanna get back your lady", "jump! for my love", and "i'm so excited". listening to "jump!", i could actually hear goldfrapp redo this song and really make it hot. anyway, i also picked up "guilty" by barbara streisand with the bee gees. yep, she crimps her hair and gets all disco on your ass. who knew? the song "promises" is actually really good. another song goldfrapp could cover and really turn out.

OK, it's a bank holiday, so I'm allowing myself for mass guilty pleasures today.

I'm listening to the quite fantastic 'Runnin' With the Devil' by Van Halen!

And I've lately become a great admirer of Yes' 22 minute long opus 'The Revealing Science of God' from their Tales from Topographic Oceans album. It's utterly fantastic, I don't mind admitting.

Oh, kick ass solo playing right now!

And later this afternoon, I'm allowing myself two and a half hours for Octopussy, easily the best James Bond film ever cos it is sooooooo dreadfully brilliant!

'Having problems keeping it up, Q?'

Genius.

Now I'm listening to 'I Feel For You' by Chaka Khan. for some reason, i think this song has more or less everything i look for in a great pop song. It's rather good.

My sister always made me watch Grease when I was younger, and she got me completely hooked on the film. True, I didn't get a lot of the jokes when I was younger myself!

Tho one thing still puzzles me: when Sandy sees Danny's face in the pool at the end of Hopelessly Devoted to You, why doesn't she freak out? I mean, she's seeing a bloke's face on the surface of water, for gawd's sake! I'd have thought I was going bonkers If i'd seen a thing like that! And his sinister grin only serves to make events more spooky. That was just tobacco they made her smoke in the previous scene, wasn't it?

Will do, mate! I was in London the other day and there was a massive billboard for The Girl Next Door above the Odeon West End cinema, with the beautiful Elisha (cos, you know, we're on first name terms at the mo....) staring down over all of us. I think I almost bumped into somebody cos I was, well... a bit distracted by it. Blimey, she's lovely. I would steal the poster, but it is the size of a small house and i'd never be able to get it on the Tube. Ferk it.

And Elska, this Gloomy Sunday song you speak of, I have a song that goes by the same name by the Associates, and I love it to bits. I know it's a cover, but I never knew who did the original... I take it this version you have is the original version....I'd love to hear that.

l'uommo "forcetracks" track #5. really mellow and moody dubbed out vocal house. highly recomended. in particular, i think kavokei and diamente would really like this. really spacey, but emotional in a sort of remote way. really great basslines, too. anyone heard of this?

I havent heard it, but it sounds really cool! I will make a note and look out for it. I love basslines too!

Listening to Neu! 75 by Neu! I love the second half of this album, where it gets all wired and fast, but i prefer the first side, which is so lovely, chilled, radiant and relaxing. I've blubbered on about the loveliness of 'See Land' here on the board at various points, so i'll do it again. I want to go to a beach and watch a sunset to this piece of music.

Almost unbelieveably, I'm listening to and watching a video of Killing Joke doing Empire Song on Top of the Pops from the early 80's.

Empire Song is a thundering, harsh, repetitive block of noise. I like it a lot. :D I'm sure the Duran Duran, Culture Club and Wham fans really enjoyed getting bludgeoned with it. ;)

How the hell they ever on Top of the Pops with it, I don't know.

'Mind Over Money' by Turin Brakes. I haven't really heard much by this band, though they are one of those bands that i kept on hearing or reading about here and there over the last couple of years. This song is fantastic, it just flutters beautifully, and I love the vocals on it. Sounds a lil like Radiohead, which is always a good thing.

Ahhhh, Can. Never heard anything by them, but I've always wanted to, cos i've read such great stuff about them. Well, i think I have. I;m sure it's Can that's the name of the group i'm thinking of, they always get grouped in with Kraftwerk, Neu and Tangerine Dream and the whole German electronic movement of the 70's.

I think Can are a bit more rock-based than those other bands, they weren't really an electronic band at all (at least none of the stuff I've heard has been)! Then again, Neu weren't an electronic band exactly either, were they?

Now listening to Bela Lugosi's Dead by Bauhaus - a classic!

24-04-2004, 12:50
Yeah, you're right. I suppose it's the repetitiveness and that kind of steady 'motorik' (not my word, just something i hear thrown about) beat that got Neu! lumped in with Kraftwerk as being an influence for some of the electronic music in the late 70s'/80's. Yeah, i mean the second side of Neu!75 is more or less a total rock album!
