At the moment I'm being surprised by the Gary Numan "Dance" album.

I'd forgotten:

1) Just how good it was. It really has very few fillers at all. Most tracks are on the money and, apart from the cover ( ), it's one of his most solid works.

2) How much it sounded like the old 'Pleasure Principle' / 'Telekon' sound. This, for me, is a Very Good Thing (tm)

3) Just how much amazing Mick Karn bass work was on there. I know he get's hyped up after the Japan days but it really is a totally recognisable and unique sound he creates, almost to the extent of it not sounding like straight bass work at all.

Edit:

Actually I've just been reading the Wiki entry for this and I never realised loads about it ! It also features Roger Taylor (Queen) on drums, Rob Dean (ex-Japan) on guitar and Canadian avant-garde performer Nash the Slash !

With both Karn and Dean on there it's no surprise that some of sounded like Japan !!

Nash The Slash is the best support act I have ever seen (and I've seen a lot over the years) his albums are so unique and underrated. I actually had an Email from Mr Slash after I found his website a few years back, such a nice bloke. Still on the go in his native Canada putting on the odd show from time to time.

Dance IMHO was porbably Mr Numan's turning point. I loved everything Gary did up till this point then I just stopped buying his records. I can remember being outside my local HMV for it to open it on it's day of release and thinking 'Gary...what have you done' on the first listen. It was years before I revisted the album and then it grew quickly on me and now I still love it. Mick Kahn's bass is so distictive and breathtaking.

By the way Mick Kahn is playing Newcastle Academy on 17th May. I hope to be there but I'm off on holiday the next day so it will be touch and go to wether my wifey will let me go....well it's not worth starting the family holiday with a bad atmosphere.:(

Well, it shouldn't have been a huge surprise to me but the Rick Rubin / Johnny Cash thing wasn't a fluke.....

....'cos the Neil Diamond "12 Songs" is a stunner !

The quality of the recording is something quite amazing and every tiny inflection is pure and safe in the recording. Even when I was a kid and I should never have said so I knew he had a great voice but these tracks really see him soar.

Carpy liable to now go and buy a Neil Diamond album - who'd have thought it !

American IV is one of my fave albums - Rubin's production is unbelievably good. He does the Slipknot album I own as well - you wouldn't believe how good it is though.

As for Neil Diamond though, I'm going to need some convinving despite the rave reviews!

Sunday mornings my Dad always played Neil Diamond, Cliff Richard, Elvis, Gene Pitney, Johnny Cash and Bobby Darin on the radiogram and brought up the toast while I was in bed.
I'm sure I get my love of music (any type as long as its quality)
from my dad. I got the chance to repay him by getting some concerts tickets for Neil Diamond 3 years ago.

Needless to say he left us with a lot of fond memories.

I can echo most of that line-up in the same way - except to add The Everly Brothers and Marty Robbins.

Heck, I'm almost tempted to search out the wild-west stories of his "El Paso" album again.....

How could I forget the Everly Brothers!
Mind you he did have a fondness for a tribute act from
Blackpool called 'Greengage' who did their own versions
of classics. They were shocking.

I go through phases and at the moment the metal "scene" (horrible phrase) is as stagnant as a very stagnant thing. It's nice to step back from any musical style though as when the cycle moves the other way you can rush at it with renewed vigour.
