Oh, I've got a crazy night planned for Saturday;

Going to see Basement Jaxx supported by the Audio Bulys in Manchester before getting the train back to go to Bugged Out in Liverpool because 2ManyDJ's are Djing!

Remember in the pub when I was telling you about my DJing ethos of just playing good songs that are obvious but never played. 2ManyDJ's I think are the closest thing to this... I've got loads of their mixes

There has been so much great music over the years it's a shame not to take advantage of it. I haven't heard 2ManyDJs yet, but I feel the need for a blow-out soon, so I'll look out for their next appearance in the area...

...try out Joy Zipper - Americam Whip

...first album of the year to really grab me!

TremblingStar
10-03-2004, 00:56
We've got the first two Joy Zipper albums. The second one wasn't even released properly, we're really lucky to have it. I like the first one quite a bit.

I can't think of a 2004 album thats got me yet. I discovered and now love 'Exterminator' by Primal Scream this year though. ast year had three great releases: Black Cherry; Postal Service 'Give Up' and J Xaverre 'These Acid Stars' IMHO. There must have been more that escaped me that I'll find in later years.

I've got Bjork's Homogenic on (again) converting a housemate. I can't believe this is 1997, it sounds like it was made 5 years in the future. I put it on for my housemate because when we went to see Death Cab For Cutie, Ben (also of Postal Service) the singer broke into 'All Is Full Of Love' on the last song. And when I thought about it i realised that the Postal Service owe a lot to Bjork.

**Sings**

#you just ain't receiving#

Can everyone please buy the Postal Service album. I know Kavokei has. Come on Kav, back us up...

While I'm at it. I can't decide which version of 'All Is Full of Love' I prefer. The single version makes it 'a song' but the bit on the end of the album is almost musical perfection... and one of the hardest things on Earth to sing...

Wow, I haven't listened to that in ages! Amazing album, 'Shoot Speed/Kill Light' is a total mindblower! What other Primal Scream albums have you got Trembler? Vanishing Point's my favourite, although Screamadelica's not far off.

As for Bjork, I'm finally giving her a chance after years of curious ignorage. I rented Vespertine from the library and will give it a listen in the very near future.

Right now I'm listening to 'Soon' by My Bloody Valentine. Is it you who also loves MBV, Trembler? This is my fave song by them. Sends shivers down the ol' spine, it does.

TremblingStar
10-03-2004, 13:17
Yeah I love MBV. I love When You Sleep, but I've recently have an affinity with Sometimes after seeing Lost In Translation.

I only own Exterminator, but I've listened to Screamadelica a few times and I think I'll get it next. I love it when a band faces the fact that they have to modernise and produce a great album whilst keeping their existing sensiblities, thats why I adore Exterminator. The Charlatans did the same thing with the fantastic Wonderland.

As for Bjork she's amazing. After the (admittedly funny) Spitting Image fax machine sketch, she's portrayed in this country as a mad nordic pixie for some reason but her music is fantastic. Homogenic is great, but I was introduced to her by the fact that I managed to pick up her greatest hits for a fiver last summer. I'm usually against greatest hits albums, but Bjork's was voted for by her fans off the net, so its a true introduction, rather than the anthems. But if you dig deeper you find other gems on the albums.

I'm listening to:

The Smiths - Rank

StarTrembler! (well you said anyone in the top 10! :D ) Extrmntr is kind of a one off - you could see signs of it on Vanishing Point and the destruction of it on Evil Heat. It's definately my fav album - but Screamadelica is also a classic but a different sound. The rest of the time they just ripped the stones off!!

Listening to Gay Dad - Leisure Noise

...and I have to say, uncool or not, it sounds great!!!

Postal Service.. Aaaaargh just been on amazon and i recognise the cover - was in a bargin bin for £4 for ages and I never knew who it was - obviously not there anymore!!! Not what I expected from the sound clips!!! Will now doubt buy it though, although I had a recommendation for a french bloke of you lot the other day and was underwhelmed (then again it was only a £3 gamble!!!):)

"Destruction of it on Evil Heat"? Not a fan of that one, tatt? I think it's the worst Primals album, but I haven't heard Give Out, But Don't Give Up (wot's the point? I already have ten Rolling Stones albums) or the early, pre-Screamadelica stuff.

Saying that, Autobahn 66 and Miss Lucifer are hot shit. The rest of the album's pretty good, but not in the same league as anything on the other three albums that i've heard by them.

Listening to 'First Boy in This Town (Lovesick)' by Scritti Politti.

Bubblegum, fun pop at its finest! Always cheers me up!

I have to say this is by far the best Alison collaboration CD I have bought. The 6 vocal tracks are amazing in their own right. I'll go as far to say the anita lane and frank potente tracks shade the Alison track ...god i even like the skin track!!!

PS: I loved Autobahn, Miss Lucifer and Velvet Morning but why did they go back to the rock out stuff - it was so regersive!

i know i'm late on the primal scream discussion, but i just wanted to say that i love them. ALWAYS! not every song they've done or album they've done has been perfect, but they have consistently been way ahead of their time. hence, the song, ''10 years ahead of my time''. they're one of those bands that can afford to step back in time 20 or 30 years and copy the stones because they saw so far into the future so early on. as far as their new stuff goes, i love it. autoban and keep your dreams are two fo my favorite songs they've done. evil heat reminds me a bit of the first suicide album. incredible.

Tell me about it, and when you go shopping do you always end up with CD's that were never on that list?

What I do is when I realise I need new music to listen to (quite often) I go on amazon and check out all the CD's off my 'want' list for prices then get four or five at a time, its a good way of cutting it down. But more go on it at a quicker rate than they get bought. When I'm rich one day, I'll just buy everything at one time and be able to start afresh and keep up to date with stuff I want for a change!

Parade would be most artists' best album, but then this guy also made Purple Rain.... which is just extraordinary.

Parade is fantastic: like you say Softy, plenty of variety. Funk and pop at its finest. Sign O the Times would beat it but i think it should have been a single album possibly. It drags in places, but half or so of it is amazing. And Prince even makes Sheena Easton more than tolerable. What a genius!

"lazy calm" is such a good song. i love it. i always imagine being underwater when i listen to that song. that whole album "victorialand" has a really wonderful aquatic/oceanic feel to it. kind of a drifting, afloat kind of sound. hard to describe, i guess. anyway, right now i'm listening to bobby womack "across 110th street".

ooooo, reminds me of jackie brown that song, tho i was well into it before that film came out.

Aquatic is definitely the word for Victorialand, it's definitely got that drifty feel, you more or less nailed it with that description moody, oh and another thanks again for getting me into watchlar a few months back mate. that song's become a bit of an obession now!

The Passenger by Iggy Pop from Lust for Life. I bought this album today after reading Frank Black's article about it in Aprils Mojo. Definitely the missing link from Bowie to the Pixies.

diamente
31-03-2004, 21:27
Lust for Life is an excellent album. I love 'Tonight' in particular. I also recommend The Idiot by Iggy Pop, which was recorded not long before LFL, and was also produced by David Bowie. You may have already heard 'Nightclubbing' from that album, and it also has the original version of 'China Girl' on it, which is absolutely brilliant, better than the Bowie version, which I also love. Go get it, it's usually outrageously cheap in most shops!

Listening to Murmur by R.E.M. Amazing album.

Haven't listened to I Might Be Wrong by Radiohead in ages Elska, might have to chuck on Amnesiac very soon!

Bluish Black
31-03-2004, 22:08
Yes I am already thinking of getting it. I got Lust for Life for £5, I already listened to it 4 times on my MP3 player.

I resisted getting too many Iggy/Stooges albums without hearing them first because I find I can just fill up my back catalogue albums because I think I must have them rather than getting the albums to listen to.

I will definitely get The Idiot and I will probably get The Stooges as someone on another forum said that the new New Order song showcased by Hooky at Brighton on Saturday sounds like the track 1969 off that album.

diamente
31-03-2004, 22:21
The Stooges are incredible. You must get their stuff! Their first album, The Stooges, is really good, but it's the next two that are real hot shit. Fun House is one of my favourite albums: in fact, I'd say it's probably my favourite ever rock album. There's a song on it called 'Dirt' (which Depeche Mode covered a few years ago) that is beyond belief. Their third album, Raw Power, is almost as good.

Listening to the amazing Forever Changes by Love, whilst reading a book about.....Forever Changes by Love. Very good book, it's part of a series called '33 1/3' which talks about classic albums. There's one on The Smiths' Meat is Murder which i really want to get, especially cos it's different from the rest in the series cos instead of being a straight appraisal of the album, it's actually a short story about a young lad's relationship with the album.

The actual song I'm listening to is 'Andmoreagain', which is so, so beautiful it actually manages to make the line 'Then you feel your heart beating rum-bum-bum-bum' sound absolutely lovely.

And the way Arthur Lee sings 'And you don't know how much I love you' sends shivers down the ol' spinage.

Listen to this album!
