yeah, i hear you. music is definitely an obssession of mine. one of the few healthy obssessions, i feel. it's come to the point now, that i'm joining the ranks of some of you on here, and started making music myself. my friends becca, sarah, and i have decided to start a band. we're just in the idea/collecting equipment phase of it, but it's all very exciting. i've always been musically inclined and used to write little ditties when i was a teenager, and always kind of kept my eye open for someone who would be fun to start something up with. we're still deciding on a name, but we've come up with a couple that we like. first we came up with "us against you", which we liked. then we came up with "you and who's army?". we thought they had a bit of a negative feel to them, so then we thought of "out on a limb" because it sounded a little more neutral. now we're thinking of "somnambulists" just because we like the word. what do you guys think? anyway, i'll keep you posted on the whole name situation.

That's interesting - I still haven't thought about what name I would release stuff under, but it's a pretty important consideration if you want people to remember who you are, isn't it? Mind you, I'm still a way off getting any of my stuff to releasable standard, so there's no urgency as yet... ;) Great to hear you're doing something about a musical urge that's obviously been there for a while - it felt like a kind of freedom when I got to the stage where I could start to put some of my ideas gathered over the years into a musical form. I've never been much good at saving up for things, so I'd never got any studio equipment set up in the days (not too long ago) when you needed thousands worth of hardware just to make a bleep - so getting my PC set up with a sequencer and software synths was a revelation, and getting to know how to make music on the PC has helped me find out what essential music hardware I need to make the sounds coming out of the speakers sound like the ones in my head. It's been an incredibly liberating (and at times equally frustrating) experience for me so far, so I'm sure you'll get a load out of it. There's a feeling you can't really describe when the one tune you just have to listen to right now (you know what I mean, being a fellow obsessive;)) is one that you wrote!:D

Tattmaylor: TremStar!!! (my fav! - I keep doing it without realising as I'm lazy and crap at typing!)

Don't forget music these days is all about the bling!

As for music being an obsession, without sounding corny its the soundtrack to my life, I can't do aything without playing it ni the house and I can't leave it without my minidisc player.

Moodfits, great news, I'm technically an awful musician - never had a proper lesson in my life, none of my band have but I pride myself on being able to get a tune out of nearly anything. I dug out my old recorder from primary school the other day and I'm addicted to it! As for band names, we were gonna call ourselves 'many more' because we'd always be on the bill! Corporation Pop works in 2 ways so we like it

1) Its pop music, and its an observation at music being corporate
2) Its celebrating our northerneess - 'Corporation Pop' is another name for water round here!

Right now, I'm listening to 4music, colin is brilliant

Ooh - don't get me started on that in this thread!! :D Kav about to go OT alert! I think I'd better PM you about it before I go off on one...

And I agree with what I think TS is getting at - that music is as much about ideas, feelings and discovering/inventing the right sounds as it is about being able to play an instrument - in fact, those aspects are probably more important if you want to produce something new and interesting, imho...

Listening to Goldfrapp live again - except they're not 'live' live this time...

[Edit] added this to my previous post because I really can't post three times in a row - that's just ridiculous

i agree you with Kav and Trembler about what you guys said about music. we don't really feel inhibited by the fact that none of is a real "musician", so to speak. becca is a great singer, so i'm sure she'll be doing a majority of the singing. she has a really cool, clear, and simple alto voice. kind of like sarah cracknell's voice. really girlie songbird voice. we all play the keyboards, so we're pretty confident that we'll be able tinker around with technology to get what we want as far as sounds and textures and all that. it's just a matter of learning what equipment to use and how to use it. as far as live instruments, we have a lot of friends that would be more than happy to lend their talents to some of our stuff. right now, we're more excited about playing live than we are about trying to record stuff.

I'm listening to an archive of old stuff with Alison on vocals (thanks Jeffers!). Includes:

- VPRO's MoonDive live session 1999
- Goldfrapp & Girardet - "Bare" and "Mane" (from “Le Confessionnal” OST)
- John Parish - "Pretty Baby"
- Juryman - "The Moot", "The Morning" and "To Sleep"
- Plaid - "Air Locked"
- Spacer - "Contrazoom", "Junk", "Orchard" and "The Event Horizon"

ACT - laughter tears and rage (anthology)

In parts dreadful and in parts abarassingly enjoyable (nostalga) - hit those 80's synths Tom!!! (first time in 10 years i've heard it!!) Any Smiths fans stay clear as there is a scary version of "Heavens knows..." on it!

Got a job lot with: Propaganda - Outside World to balance the glam.

Incase all the dodgy synths kill my taste, i bought the new Lamb album cheap (if it's as good as wonder single it will be great!)

PS: Kav missed the Pale 3 (warrior and princess) track (infact all the vocal tracks are great on that album - it's worth getting for all them aswell as Alison!)

Moodfits, having a good singer realy is a blessing. But mess about yourself as well, I do much of our singing and my voice is technically awful, I have to sing through my throat to stay in tune. I personaly like bands that divvy the singing up and keep it varied also just think of those bad singers with great voices: Bob Dylan; Billy Corgan; Tim Wheeler, I'm sure there's more. I used to quite like Embrace and I don't think Danny McNamara had ever sang a note in tune.

If Embrace have ever got as far as NYC I'll eat my hat.

Having a band is more of a social thing as well between you and your mates, we've not been doing it long, and not played gigs yet, but its really enjoyabe.

I'm listening to Outspaced by the Super Fuurry Animals. Went to see NME tour tonight:

Franz Ferdinand - good but not as good when I saw them last summer

Von Bondies - seemed like a good band, but not really my 'thang' had some decent tunes though.

I was planning on going to that, but the amount it costs in fuel to drive to Liverpool, it was a choice between that and next Tues... not too keen on FF (a bit too much posturing for my liking), tbh, but I would've liked to see the rest of them... especially The Rapture.

Yeah, Sway is a pretty good song (agreed, a bit soppy) but there are others I prefer on her first album - I like her second album quite a lot as well, although I haven't listened to it as much yet. I just really like her voice as well.

Was in Manchester Thursday night and passed a pub on oldham street that has bands on and: 1. pissed to see electralane were on that night (although as i was going to see the legendary Funk brothers i wasn't that bothered) but 2. had just missed Astrid (the beautiful scotttish singer not the band) - i didn't even know she was doing any dates.

Quite moving. 2 of them have died since the film was made! - one after the last night of the american tour - and one left the stage on crutches at the end of the gig. BUT they were the tightest band i've ever heard, absolutely note perfect (as my friend said 'just like listening to the records!!) Issac Hayes didn't make it didn't matter. The crowd were amazing - took over half an hour to introduce the band !

Yeah, i heard Bic Runga is supportting Aqualung for the intimate dtaes at the lowry etc.

I got Aqualung tickets the other day, but there for the follow up standard uni tour in April, I don't think Bic's in support then.

The First Aqualung album: when only an hours worth of listening to a man who has had his life absolutely torn apart by a woman will do. However, Matt has reasons to be cheerful, the last time I saw him the audience was, like, 99% female. Which, may i add is not my reason for seeing him again...

Mellow - Dragonfly.
It's a poor CD, everything about it reeks of having been done better elsewhere. Second rate Air wannabees in my opinion I'm afraid.

Four Tet - Pause.
Got my mitts on several 'As Serious As Your Life' promo CDs and turned a handsome profit online. The CD consisted of four versions of the title track. Track 4 is 23 minutes long and I'd sooner listen to somebody strangling an otter whilst trying to construct a shed made of wood and corrugated iron than listen to that track again. Torture. :(

tattmaylor
02-02-2004, 09:09
SoftLad. I like Dragonfly as it's not trying to be Air, it's trying to sound like an old 60's soundtrack and so is deliberately dated. Air were always new with a vide of the old, and just think the latest album has lost that 60's vibe! So Dragonfly was keeping me going till Bertrand Bergalat does something new!

Did you listen to the sampler? I thought it sounded promising!

Duncan. Yep got Balligomingo. It's hard to describe but it just seemed to smooth! Didn't grab me - will listen again though.

I'm in Love with a German Filmstar is one of my all time fave tracks Diamente!

Good choice :)

I'm currently listening to a lot of Goldfrapp and also The Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb - both of whom I'll be seeing in April opening for Duran on tour.

Also Franz Ferdinand - Take me Out , 2 new tracks by Duran called Salt in the Rainbow and Sunrise ( Jason Nevins remix v cool indeed ) and a track called Feel by my boyfriends band Evil Twin.

I'm in Love with a German Film Star is a total classic! I haven't heard anything else by the Passions though, i only came across that song on an 80's compilation and it was the find of the year as far as I was concerned. The guitars are just so amazing.

I like the Scissor Sisters version of Comfortably Numb, it's so different from the Pink floyd one, which i listened to again for the first time in ages the other day. I still like that version, despite (or because of) those guitar solos, and it's by far the best thing on The Wall, which is a ghastly album that i've never been able to get into, and I really like most of Pink Floyd's stuff too.

Have you heard the Scissor Sisters album yet Sandy?

Listening to I'm in Love with a German Film Star by The Passions. Had to put it on, so brilliant!

I haven't heard the Scissor Sisters album, but I LOVE what they did to Comfortably Numb, SO New Yawk disco...fantastic!

I may have to buy it before the DD tour in April.Get me in the mood!

God I love *Im in love with a German Filmstar* its one of my fave tracks in the world. Infact if I had a *Desert Island Disc* Top 10 list that would be up in the Top 5 without a doubt.....which gives me an idea for another thread....:)

Speaking of cool tracks, I recommend highly the track *Linoleum* which is on an album called Tweaker, with David Sylvian on vocals....this is prob about number 2 in my Top 10 Desert Island Dics ( hence my nickname Linoleum!)

Give it a listen , its gorgeous.....

I haven't heard of that song, I'll have a look out for it! David Sylvian's great, one of my favourite singers. I've only heard Brilliant trees (I absolutely love 'Red guitar') from his solo stuff, but I adore Quiet Life, Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum by Japan, especially GTP, it's one of my favourite ever albums. I was listening to it earlier and every track just slays me, it's so good!

The Scissor Sisters album is great, I've been listening to it a lot and it's getting better and better the more I listen to it.

Dester Island Discs thread? Sounds good!

Listening to Paper Bag by Goldfrapp at the mo..... words fail me. It's just absolutely amazing.

Ok Diamente, I think we may have been in parallel musical universes the last 20 years.LOL.
....Gentleman Take Polaroids is the best Japan album in my opinion, especially the tracks, *Methods of Dance* and * My New Career*- also reminded me of another track by Japan thats fabulous...on my copy of GTP theres a label saying erratum *Some kind of Fool* and instead * My New Career* is on there...anyway, getting to the point now- the track *some Kind of Fool* finally turned up on Sylvians Best of Collection *Everything and Nothing* and its TOO Fcuking DIVINE and spine tinglesome for words!Funny that I had to wait for over 20 years to hear it though!

'My New Career'....what a song. It's perfect. Everything on that album is just amazing. It's not often I hear an album where everything on it is brilliant but that one's flawless. I really want to get the Cd reissue cos of the extra tracks, which sound really good just from the snippets I've been able to hear on the HMV website.

I didn't know there was a David Sylvian best of: oh... there's just too much I want to go and buy at the mo, just can't afford it tho! When I have enough I'm gonna get all those recent Japan reissues, and this Sylvian best of cos I know I'll love it too!

Hey there tatt, I haven't heard any of the remastered albums yet, only snippets on Hmv's website, and they don't do the songs justice in terms of sound quality. I'm curious, but like you I'm also wary, especially as they're going for about fifteen to seventeen quid in all the shops i've seen them in. On Amazon one of the customer reviews praises the Tin Drum reissue for its improved sound quality, but another reviewer slates the Gentlemen Take Polaroids reissue for not being that much of an improvement on the old CD....

Low's terrific: as you say elska, it's 'toe-curlingly fantastic'! Love the second, instrumental half of the album in particular, especially 'Art decade'.

Listening to the frankly amazing Porcupine by Echo and the Bunnymen at the mo. I wish I could recapture that thrill i got when i first heard this album. It just blew my fragile little mind, i'd never heard anything so bonkers, atmospheric and exciting at the time. Even now it's still one of the best albums I've got.

There's a song on it called 'Clay' which is just extraordinary. Guitar drones that sound like they belong in a torture chamber, and yes: it has the best chorus ever! The way Ian's voice just goes over the edge on the second chorus is just sensational and the middle eight feels like being trapped in a hurricane. I've oversold it now. They never perform it live whenever I've seen them. Bugger.

There is some really good consciencous rap about; NERD and Outkast are obviously kicking it into the next century and you've got good contemporary stuff like Jurassic 5 as well. Have you heard of solesides? it's on sale at HMV at the mo and its an amazing rap project from a few years ack, DJ Shadow is involved.

As for the gangsta bling bling stuff, you've got to love 2001 by Dr. Dre, its an amazing album, I quite like Wu Tang as well, but yes, this Ja Rule, 50 cent etc. stuff thats coming out at the moment is embarassingly bad. There's a really good Chris Rock joke about hearing nothing about 50 cent's music, only that he got shot 9 times.

Even in Britain, people like Dizzee Rascal are gaining recognition, from where I'm standing rap is beginning to thrive again, its just had to get a lot more intelligent.

I haven't heard the Solesides stuff (will check it out) but there has also been some cLOUDDEAD and Slug stuff that I liked. Boards Of Canada recently remixed a cLOUDDEAD track - I quite liked that... And of course, there's always Goldie Looking Chain!! :D Hehe

It just feels like we've been overwhelmed by the throwaway crap over the past few years. In a lot of cases it's the blatant conspicuous consumption that seems to go with the current hip-hop culture that pisses me off - there's an interview with Damon Dash in this weeks Sunday Times magazine where he goes on about throwing away his Nikes after he's worn them once - fucking unneccessary, and giving out completely the wrong message, IMHO. Yeah, I know. But basically its his end of hip hop I don't like. Every genre has a commericial behemoth detracting from the rest of it, not to say that some of it isn't some of the best, I've mentioned NERD and there's Radiohead and Coldplay in the rock field ets.

I saw a program the other day which kept talking about how much P. Diddy (tee-hee) spends. I don't know how he lives with himself. Its people such as him who talk about their humble beginnings, I wonder what the NY ghettos could do with the money he spent on 'the rocks that he got'

Don't get me wrong, if I made it big I'd live very well, I'd buy a fancy car (Bugatti 110, please) but I wouldn't want 20 and too much jewellery to wear in a lifetime, its such a crass status symbol. Surely generosity would also have the same effect?

Anyways:

My package from Amazon has just arrived

The Erlend CD is excellent - thanks for the recommendation! In fact, that's what I'm listening to at the moment. I love the laid back, bleepy feel there is through most of it (sort of like being trapped inside a really lazy amiga game), and I love the Prefuse 73 and Morgan Geist tracks... SUdden Rush is another one I like. You have to be in a retro mood for it though, I think.

The Air album... hmm, well. There are some excellent tracks on it, but it's not totally consistent, imho. I'm sure it'll grow on me though. What about Fatherfucker, by the way? I love her first album... is it as good?

As for a drum machine, what about an MPC1000 (http://www.akaipro.com/int/mpc1k/)? You can load your samples from a computer via USB (makes life a lot easier) and bash away on the pads... plus it can act as a 64 track MIDI sequencer (and it looks sexy.. well, as sexy as a metal box can be, I suppose). I'm planning on investing in one for when I get my live set sorted out - they're pretty reasonably priced as well. If you'll be using a laptop as well you can sync it up with that... if you do get a laptop as well, something like Ableton Live will be perfect, added to an audio/MIDI sequencer like Tracktion or similar for writing your stuff... just some ideas, anyway.

Happy birthday for Saturday, by the way!! :D Same day as my mum...

So Talkie Walkie was instant for you was it? I've got to admit, it's taken a few listens for me so far, but it's starting to grow on me. I agree about Run though - it instantly grabbed me; that synth choir is twice as delicious as it should be! Venus is a favourite as well; I love the vocals...

A ticket for a gig is about half the price of a night on he town. I'm not too big on nightclubs, once a month maybe. It just amazes me that for £15 you can see some of the worlds most gifted performers and most people in my position spend double in order to not remember the night...

I get to see a lot of stuff for free as well, friends in high places...

This week has been busier than most though:

Monday - Death Cab For Cutie
Wednesday - Lamb

G N R did a song called Mr Brownstone which I love to bits, really OTT and the vocals on it are hilarious. Don't Cry and Sweet Child O mine were pretty good too.

However, their lyrics usually let the side down. Here's a nugget of genius from 'It's So easy' off their first album.

'I see you standing on the corner,
You think you're so cool,
Why don't you just....FUCK OFF!'

Fair enough, mate.

Joy Zipper were worth getting there early for, but get the first album, there's beauty in the polished sound that they didn't quite get on stage. Talking about polished sounds on stage: Air did probably the most professional set I've ever seen a band do. It was still great and I don't suppose there's any other way to do AIr is there? No room for mavericism. New album's great though: Run; Cherry Blossom Girl; ALpha Beta Gaga and Alone in Kyoto are already classics with me!
