The sound of London not taking an active step to prevent suicide bombings from occurring.
I can tell you right now that if there was a -third- attempt of suicide bombings in Australia within a month, there is no way in hell the police would allow anyone Arabic looking near public transport or public centres. Not exactly PC, but attacks would stop.

That would be half of London though:(
London is a multi-cultural city and has many millions of oversea visitors too.
You couldn't really ban ethnic minorities from using public transport.
If terrorists didn't bomb the London transport then they could use some other network or shopping centres...or would you stop any arabic people from going out in public at all?
What does an Arabic person look like?
When the Brazillian was shot dead eye-witnesses (general public) described him as being Pakistani/Arabic origin. He was from the other side of the world and had nothing to do with terrorism.
I feel sorry for ethnic minorities as people are viewing them with suspicion and unease. They must feel like social outcasts.
It's a horrible scary world out there and I don't have any realistic suggestions on how to combat it.
Still listening to Staddsys CD and loving it! :D
Tahiti 80 - When The Sun (Sunrise Version).
It's just Australia's way. We're actively unracist towards them, but if a problem arises like that, it'd be combated quickly. When it happens here (and it will) you'll likely see a different reaction to the US after Sept 11 and the UK after the London bombings. Not cool, but you know. Even after Sept 11, mosques here got firebombed and Muslims got shunned openly in public for a couple of months. I didn't contribute to either, but I think Australia is too nationalistic when it comes to race relations to tolerate it. No one here sees that there are good Muslims.
Bah, boring discussion. Let's move on.

that is true...anyway it is not necessarily arabic...just anyone muslim looking according to some people and in LONDON! those people were arrested in notting hill the other day, if everyone fitting that description was arrested and suspected of terrorism then that would half the people there!
I have to say...I used to think the english police were rather..incompetent but they do seem to be making much quick progress...think they have delt well with the situation really well (apart from the man that they shot)

Actully, I don't mean to go on about this as I have already commented few posts above. But what you have written has really wound me up.
1) Australia would not do what you have said - unless it wanted to receive the enmity of the entire international community.
2) One of my favourite people in the entire world is my friend Sami: a Londoner of Asian extraction - the thought of someone like her having to stay isolated from the public sickens me.
3) Fundamentalist Muslim fanatics are not only of arabic extraction - and it is not only these who have been responsible for what has happened in London.
4) Such a policy would only succeed in alienating parts of society further causing more disiluusionment amongst the muslim community.
Could you please explain your comments because I am extremely offended.

I was just hearing on the radio today about how looking for suspicious 'behaviour' instead of looking for suspicious 'colors' gets more results when it is tried. Neither racial profiling or random searches ever work as well. Just ask El Al, Israel's Airline, who haven't had a skyjaking in over thirty one years!

From just coming back from NZ, I have to say if there was a bombing there many people would get extremely paraniod and that may effect the governments decsions (althoughh Helen Clarke is one of teh most sensible PM i've ever seen). I think (hope) the UK will be pretty cool about it, although obviously there will be the dick heads how find somethingto blame there own problems on (mostly the cause of racsim).
Many Kiwi's are nervous about coming to UK (eventhough there has always been a terrorist threat in London with the IRA) because the muslim extremist threat has been sensationalised by governments looking to justify world policy (USA/UK) and heavy handed local policy (Russia, Israel, parts of Africa).
I'm not being disrespecful to those who lost their lives but you're still more likely to be knocked down by a london bus than blown up in one.

TremblingStar, I'm sorry dude I didn't mean anything by my comments, and I don't necessarily agree with them, but it's just that I think Australians as a whole would react differently, which I expressly mentioned in my original comments. I just want to make it clear that I didn't say that that's how -I- will react to it when it happens, but that Australians as a whole would be a lot less tolerant. Knowing how things work here, I know that if there was a public transport bombing, there'd be "unwritten rules" making it particularly difficult for an Arabic looking person to buy a TransLink ticket, and that if a particularly gruff young Arabic man was to board a bus here, it's not uncommon for several people to get off the bus at the next stop for the sole reason that he was on it. I've seen it happen travelling around my city the last few weeks. I've never done it, but it's blatantly obvious what others are doing. It'd suck for these people because obviously not everyone is a terrorist, but it just seems that from my own observations, Australians as a whole are far more judgemental on stereotypes and things like that.
I'm sorry if I offended you in any way, but I didn't mean it as my own thoughts on the subject, just revealing how it works in Australia. But being honest also, I was very tempted last week on the way to uni to get off the bus when a bearded Arabic guy all by himself with a big backpack came on; the second he got on, about ten people got up and left, looking behind themselves at him panickedly. We're more stereotypical, more likely to impose unfair restrictions against them if something were to happen here, and etc etc. Generalisations, but it's sooo obvious that these people are rushing to get off the bus because they don't want to be near Arabic looking people. I guess that technically means the terrorists win, but yeah.
I think it was just a misunderstanding; I was relaying what I think is likely to occur here in the event of a terrorist attack here.

Big generalisation here, but I know that the vast majority of Australians would not give a shit how racist they appear, so long as the racist thing they're doing makes it less likely for them to be killed. If that makes sense.
Australians as a whole are not really racist to any race except Arabs and Aboriginals (but in a faar more delicate sense than the Japanese are to their natives, etc).
I don't want to give a bad impression of Australia, but that's just how it is here. Stereotypes seem to influence us as a whole more than facts. Remember; this is a country that only a few decades ago had a "white Australia policy". Any visitor to here would tell you that we're not racist at all to Asians or anything like that (our proximity to Asia means we have a very rich Asian culture, and it's fantastic, I am very proud to live in a place so surrounded in it) but in the eyes of John Q. Aussie, Arabs are terrorists and must be avoided. Regardless of the evidence against that. Once again, not my opinion, but that's just how it is. Comparing here with the UK was my only intention.

OK, Klamath, cool. Its just that when you prefix your point saying how London isn't do anything - it gave your post a 'this is what you should do' air about it. But London is doing everything we can - MI5, MI6 and GCHQ do an amazing job, its just that old adage that the terrorists only have to be lucky once while the government has to be lucky all the time comes into play.
No offence to Oz but if by cleaving society really would be the way to deal with terrorism, I personally prefer the way we're dealing with it for a million reasons.

Some strange Portishead compilation that had Melody De Nelson references but weren't Serge. French singing but is it Beth? Very nice thought.
Hey Trem Bon voyage tomorrow.
You going Go Team when you get back? Are they worth the trip over the pennies?

They're amazing live: seen them twice now. When do they play?
Oooh, this is going to annoy me so much when they (deservedly) get massive. The ''ickle gig I saw them do at the Masque last year in Liverpool was amazing. And DJK Scotch Egg played the best support set I've ever seen.

I love it.
Tricky is a God although he has lost direction over recent years and his albums have been less than satisfying...particularly when Martina left.
I wanted to see Martina sing with Massive Attack last summer at the gig in Brighton but I couldn't get down there.
Did you manage to go?
It was supposed to have been one of their best.

Ive never seen Massive Attack live, I was going to see them on the 100th Window Tour At Manchester but it never happerned, but, there is some songs on there that are a bit Crappy you can tell that 100th windrow was a solo Project of 3D's there seem to lack any substance. Exception of What your soul sings, Everywhen,Special Cases there very good.
Been a fan since Mezzinine, and I bought All the albums, Unfinished Sympathy is one of my favourite songs of all time.
Its a dam shame Mushroom left.
Daddy G and 3D need to work together on Massive Attack Album instead of penning film Soundtracks.

Dolby; aye. The Golden Age Of Wireless is one of my fave albums of all time. But on the tape I made back in 1983, I put in bits of the Blinded By Science ep. The version of Flying North was so awesome on that one.
