"one of t hese nights" by the eagles. an old song i grew up listening to. reminds me of my mom cleaning house. i used to love it when she'd clean house. she'd put on her records and turn them up loud. she used to put her disco records on and she'd teach me all the steps. the hustle, the bus stop, the slide. my mom had the moves down. bit of a disco queen.

"Gone Forever"
Weird. I've just been listening to Ulrich "Strangely Isolated", and on "In All The Wrong Places" it sounds like someone is playing table tennis in time with the music near the end. Seriously.
Listen at about 6.10... see? That's a fekking game of ping-pong if ever I heard one...

i'm listening to "shallow then halo" by cocteau twins off the album "garlands". this is definitely a track for you to check out, diamente. dark, moody, the sickest guitar riffs you ever heard in your life, liz's voice a childish snarl, even some dub reggae sound effects tossed in the middle of the song. theres a part where she's singing two lines at once, and it sounds like she's saying "stars in my eyes, stars at my feet" and i just love that line.

awww Pony I'm so upset!!!. I have to say I can't respect Moby after he spent ages going on & on about how music was abused by advertising/industry etc.. then let virtually ever track on Play be used in an advert. Biggest hipocryte in music EVER..!!!. I read an interview with him the other day and even he's totally emabrassed by his behaviour.
And he's not that original, proved by the fact he run out of ideas!. Norman Cook (Fat Boy Slim) put old blues singer's over samples ages before on a free mix CD with the first Freakpower album (band he used to be in).
I mean I know you should look at the music on it's own merit (i quite like some of his stuff) but when I see him in interviews I just...... aaaarggh!!
And I just bought the NEW Tori Amos hits album aswell!!!!! Listening to it now.

ooooooooooohhh.......i LOVE "i want you"by marvin gaye. that song is just sooooo incredible. it manages to be sexy, sad, and kind of creepy all at the same time. i'm listening to "kiss them for me"by siouxie and the banshees. by the way diamente, "victorialand" is an amazing album. really, really chill and pretty."lazy calm" off that album is one of their best songs. definitely buy it when the money is flowing.

'Kiss them for me' is a great song, I really like the banshees, 'tinderbox' is the only studio album of theirs that I have (as well as the two '...upon a time' best ofs), and it's brilliant, i really got into that album last summer. 'Candyman' and 'Party's Fall' played at full volume gets the job done for me.
I want to get all the Cocteaus stuff, I just love everything I've heard so far. I listened to Blue Bell Knoll and heaven or Las Vegas constantly on a coach journey the other day, blew my mind as usual! Head Over Heels and Victorialand are definitely next on the list for albums that I want to buy.
Have you heard Here My Dear by Marvin Gaye, themoodfits? I love that album, especially 'When Did You Stop Loving Me...', such an amazing song.
themoodfits
04-01-2004, 05:20
yeah, i have that album too. "when did you stop loving me?" is an incredible song. "falling in love again" always gets me, too. my favorite songs by him are "i want you" and "inner city blues" (makes me wanna holler). those songs are so perfect and sounds so modern even today.

Mmmmm, 10,000 Hz Legend will definitely have to be re-listened to, it's been ages. I remember buying that and Amnesiac by Radiohead a few summers ago and being totally hooked on both of them. Been ages since i listened to Amnesiac too....

That's quite a jump moodfits!
'Duel' by Propaganda just finished, and 'About the Weather' by Magazine just started on my compilation.
Also, I'd just like to say that 'Atomic' by Blondie is close to being the best single ever. Funny cos, I'm mostly nonplussed with a lot of their other stuff.
The thing I love about this board is that people constantly surprise me, and make me remember things I haven't listened to for ages. On top of that, I'm always finding tips for music to try out... it's just the bestest thing ever! ;)
Anyway, my noise-making PC is currently silent as I'm 'backing up' stuff, so I'm currently listening to Lord Peel of Radio-oneshire. I hope I'm that enthusiastic about new music when I'm in my sixties...

Claudia and Paul - Not married anymore. They meet as he wrote the sleeve notes to the ZTT album covers, Propaganda's
label. Broke up after her solo album. Apparently she did a tour with the other half of OMD (i.e the one who didn't discover atomic kitten). Bit of a sad ending.
ACT was a synth guy Thomas leer and Claudia Brucken. Synth pop - bit dated but some great tracks! Apparently the album they did is being rereleased with extra stuff! It's been going for quite a lot on ebay (like a lot of ZTT stuff)

yeah, i absolutely agree. that song is one of my favorite songs of all time. both the original mix and the eno mix. has anyone here heard their album "amplified heart"? this was the album before "walking wounded", the one that "missing" is from. this is one of my favorite albums ever. airy, accoustic, and very much ahead of it's time. this was probably the first album i heard to mix that whole bare bones, accoustic sound with the somewhat hip hop styled beats. years later, madonna, dido, and everyone else in between would be making songs like these.
Neon Heights were remixed on a release by Bent, a favourite duo of mine (I post on the Bent Forum along with a certain other party on this board!).
Neon Heights have also been known to use a vocalist that Bent also favour - Zoe Johnston. NH's current vocalist is apparently a lady that goes by the name of Mandisa.

everything but the girl are amazing. like cocteau twins, they have a huge, and varried body of work. from their early, smiths-esque-jazz-folk stuff, to their mid eighties-yuppie-cheese, to their later stuff, like "amplified heart", "walking wounded", and "temperamental". also, several colaborations with the likes of massive attack, deep dish, the style council, and tons of other artists. i'd be happy to make some recomendations. although, i know money is tight and i don't want you going broke tracking down their back catalogue.

Wow, I didn't know they had been around for so long. I wouldn't be able to buy any of their stuff at the mo as indeed, my money is dire, but soon i'm gonna go another spending spree. Victorialand and Head Over Heels are next on the list for sure, and I'm sure there are a few others I've been meaning to buy that I can't remember at the mo. I'd love to hear some recommendations though mate, as it sounds like the group have been the victim of what many groups have suffered in that they've had a huge career but only get represented on the telly and on the radio by just one or two of their songs (in their case, the remix of Missing and to a lesser extent, Walking Wounded, at least here in the UK, anyway).

I've just been listening to a Keane performance streamed from the BBC website. Rock without guitars, apparently - f*** knows why they have to pigeonhole everything. Still, it's pretty good stuff...
I think I might go and listen to a bit of Lemon Jelly - I've been inspired by tatt. After that, maybe some Playgroup?
I just thought I'd have a quick listen to the Ladytron live recording on the BBC Lamacq Live In The City (Liverpool) (http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music/out/litc_liverpool.shtml) page. It's f***ing terrible, like a really bad karaoke. I mean REALLY bad.
Well I know not to go and see them live, anyway...

Teehee! See what you mean, it does sound like the horn player has sneaked in a bit of Lurpak action. But then, maybe that doesn't confirm anything; maybe I'm just hearing things too, and we've both lost it....

That song is brilliant, it's just as powerful as their later stuff, just with a very dark streak running through it that makes the music sound more edgy and uneasy rather than joyous. It does sound like 'stars in my eyes, stars at my feet',, you're right, though once it sounded like 'stars at my face' AND 'stars at my feet' at the same time! A song that's similar to this is a B-side from Siouxsie and the Banshees from around the Tinderbox era, i think it's called 'Umbrella' and it's one of the bonus tracks on the CD version. Those same tortured guitar wails and moody basslines, reallyatmospheric and spooky. Another one I really like off Garlands is 'But I'm Not', really good, that one. Cheers for pointing me towards this, moodfits!

Suede - "Dog Man Star"... found it at last so I've been listening to it all day. I really had forgotten how outstanding this album is, and it was only when I listened to it that I remembered going to see Suede play live around the time it came out. It was a shame because the venue was about half full, but an excellent show. It's amazing how the emotion seems to build as the CD progresses - so many albums seem to start great and lose momentum towards the end, but Dog Man Star just seems to get better - it's hard to get it off repeat.
Well, I've just broken the cycle by listening to the Boards of Canada remix of cLOUDDEAD "Dead Dogs Two" (http://www.bigdada.com/) (just open the page and the audio should stream automatically)... it's a bit unusual, I've never really listened to any cLOUDDEAD stuff before, and one of the rappers/vocalists seems to have a slightly irritating voice, but the mix is quite good. Maybe worth a listen if you're into weird ambient hip-hop...

Coming Up is fantastic, definitely. I don't love it as much as Dog man Star, but it's still brilliant. It's a superb pop album. I love 'Picnic by the Motorway', 'Starcrazy', 'Trash' and as for the ending to 'The Chemistry Between Us'? Pure bliss.
Head Music has got some absolutely superb songs on it as well, but i reckon it should have been cut by about five songs (mostly the ones towards the end, cept for 'He's Gone', which I love). There's a fair amount of filler on it.
Listening to I want you by marvin Gaye.

Kavokei, I implore you to get Loveless now! I can't comment on Isn't Anything (which they made before) cos I hevan't heard it, but it's meant to be amazing too. As far as I know, the stuff they did before Isn't Anything isn't meant to be that great, apparently it's flimsy, flowery indie pop, or so I've heard.
Anyway, back to Loveless: it's just a headrush of an album. The guitars just sound out of this world, and the vocals are really soothing and beautifully serene. 'To Here Knows When' is one of the most extraordinary songs i've ever heard, it's just so atmospheric and intoxicating. And as for 'Soon'..... it's best that you just listen to it. I can't do it justice with the words I know. The rest of the album is pretty spectacular as well.
Also, Loveless has one of the best album covers I've ever seen. :)

hey, i stand by this song ("step back in time"). i had a great time dancing out to this song when i was 16 or so. i have some fond memories attatched to this song. besides, if you look at what i was listening to prior to that song, you see a progression. saint etienne, erasure...i was bound to end up at "step back in time" at some point. i think after that i played a dance remix of "love will save the day" by whitney houston followed by "another star"by stevie wonder. sometimes a boy just needs some obsequious dance music to shake his ass to while home alone at night. must i be taken to task for this? LOL! and yes, all erlend oye's solo stuff is good. but it's ghost trains with morgan geist (of metro area) that is the best song, by far. the other real standout song from his solo album is "a sudden rush" with kompis. very cool song. dancey in an 80's nostalgia way with that whole electro irony tied in without being annoying or stupid. cool songs. the rest of the album is ok.

and yes, all erlend oye's solo stuff is good. but it's ghost trains with morgan geist (of metro area) that is the best song, by far. the other real standout song from his solo album is "a sudden rush" with kompis. very cool song. dancey in an 80's nostalgia way with that whole electro irony tied in without being annoying or stupid. cool songs. the rest of the album is ok. In that case, I'll probably listen out for some tracks from the album before I rush out and buy it. I'm intrigued by the 'sudden rush' track now, though...

I'm sort of getting into my emo. I tended to look over it and then really got into an electronic act called The Postal Service (see my current signature). (You may know this) Ben Gibbard from the postal service is from emo act Death Cab for Cutie which I got into as a result. Who are brilliant.
Not only did I overlook emo, I suppose that its the sort of music my band is producing before I was au fais with what sort of music that genre produced. I've got 'Places You Have Come To Fear The Most' (title track is amazing) and will by 'A Mark etc.) next.
I used to write off Jimmy Eat World as childish but I really get it now. Do you like them by any chance?
Right now I'm listening to:- Lovebox - Groove Armada

definitely check it out. it's worth it. the whole album is good. i just meant to say that my two personal favorites are "ghost trains" and "a sudden rush". "ghost trains" is more of a cold, electro feeling song, the mellody and all, but his voice brings a real warmth and human feel to it. "a sudden rush" is more of a warm sound, with an electro/disco feel to it. the chorus is killer with him doing his own back up vocals and harmonizing with himself. there's also really good ewan pearson remix of it, if you can find the single. anyway, i'm listening to the "amplified heart" album by everything but the girl and relaxing before having a big golden globes party.

Sia - Colour the small one (and it's growing on me!)
TremStar:
My mate co/wrote Not So Manic Now (my only claim to fame!! :D ) in his old band Brick Supply. It was his distinctive lyrics and melody that made the song - got fiddled on royalties though as to studio guys go their names on the credits when Dubstar did it!!
Had a lovely chill this moring to Harold Budd - White Arcades (been looking for it for ages and finally found it on CD - first ambient music I really liked)

Do you have the new Client singles too? One of the B sides (Can't See Me Now) is fantastic in my opinion.
tmf - thanks! I'll get myself a copy then. I've 'saved it for later' at Amazon (still paying off Christmas at the moment!)...

I know - the arrangements are stunning, aren't they? It should be a standard 'text' for lessons in songwriting! Well, I like it, anyway...
Too right, Kavokei!
Hey, are those bicycle bells on You Still Believe in Me?! There's so much stuff there to find, such a full sound....I'm sure I'll still love Pet Sounds 30 years from now!
I know - I'm sure they are! Brian Wilson was incredibly inventive and perceptive (and only 23 years old at the time, wasn't he?), getting new sounds by doing things like crawling inside a piano to pluck the strings, using things like theremins and putting instruments in spaces that made them sound unusual - he was right when he sang "I just wasn't made for these times". I think "Lets Go Away For A While" and "Don't Talk" are my favourites on there, but I love the whole album.
Its a Vinyl day and todays platter of choice is.......
Spacemate by Sudden Sway!!!.
And if any one of you dudes can pass comment on that then ill dance at yer mammys wedding!!:D

Hybrid - Haven't seen 'em live but Wide Angle is superb. Hybrid are often described as Techno (!) which is odd as I'm not a fan of that style of music on the whole.
Client - Yup, got 'Rock And Roll Machine' (all these bloody machines are taking over I tells yis!) on CD single. Like the bra-less/uniform/ladyfriends image too. :)
Get the new Hybrid album "Morning sci-fi". Totally feckin superb. And Peter Hook is on it too. What more do you want?. Play.com were doing it for a tenner with the free dvd too.

I saw Damien Rice in a pub in Leeds over a year ago with about 20 people and he was breathtaking! Problem was the album just doesn't do him (and the lovely lisa) real justice after seeing them up close!! Just spoilt it - but in a good way!!
Sorry but the celebrity freak show is on telly so no music for me !!!!
Might put Damien on later though, it's been a while!

Yay! Pet Sounds is a bit brilliant, and 'Don't Talk' and 'Let's Go Away for a While' are my favourites on the album too, along with 'Caroline No'. I don't think it's as perfect as it's always made out to be though, stuff like 'That's Not Me', 'Pet Sounds', 'I'm Waiting for the Day' and 'I Know There's an Answer' are good, but not great. But 'Don't Talk' is one of the most beautiful songs ever.
'Let's Go Away for a While' is Brian Wilson's favourite of all his musical compositions, I read somewhere.

'Disgraceful' is great - 'Just A Girl She Said' is another great song.

Sia sat behind me on the Eurostar to Paris last year. I briefly spoke to her and her record company representative (who was gorgeous).
I was going there to see Bjork in concert and I suggested the gig to them but they had already seen Bjork play at Hammersmith.

Well I'll ask Dave, as I'm seeing him play a Boy Tate gig in a few weeks. The original was by Brick Supply (in which he was the lyric/song writer) and doesn't sound much different from the Dubstar version, but more acoustic. The Boy Tate is Dave and Tate (singer from Brick Supply) and they do Simon and Garfunkel style acoustic guitar/harmonies but with Daves usual dark bitting lyrics (which to be honest half the time he doesn't really understand). He likes making up stories let's say. Lyrically he is a one off!!! I did the design to his last CD which was called In The Head of the Ice Cream Girl and everytime I asked him what it meant he made up a totally different story!!!!
I set up his website (badly so nothing works!!) at www.theboytate.co.uk That has a few mp3's on but he wouldn't put the original Not So manic.. on as there is a bad history on the legal side so he never does it. Finally got him to sing it, at one of his gigs last year and it was great (they hadn't done it for years but still sang it perfectly!!!) ended up having a big old sing-along.
TremStar have you heard the original???

Sorry, how rude. I forgot to say what I'm listening to... a track that seems to be called "pUNDe_HereTheyCome_basis.mp3", downloaded from the guy's website. But I've got to say, it's FAAAKIN great - I can't stop listening to it. If you want to hear it you can probably just go to this post at the KvR forum (http://www.kvr-vst.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=34701) and download (may need to right click/save as) from the link that says ".. still preparing my namm-reports .. (http://we-are-billions.com/putte/zeugs/pUNDe_HereTheyCome_basis.mp3)" (the link may work straight from here: http://we-are-billions.com/putte/zeugs/pUNDe_HereTheyCome_basis.mp3).

phones ringing. my heads sore. :(
Cheers, Tremmers (I never quite know how to abbreviate your name, and Trembling Star sounds oh so formal)... I'll look forward to hearing some of you stuff - it'll be good to meet you at last as well, a face to the name and all that.
Aww, bless Jen - I'm surprised you're at work; from what's on the news, those of us further south could be forgiven for thinking the whole of Scotland is under one big snowdrift. Have you kicked some arse there yet, or are you still disappearing under a mound of everyone else's work? Hope it's going well, anyway... :)
I'm currently listening to The Mars Volta again. I can't stop myself from pronouncing Volta like Dick says 'voltage' in 'Danger!' - which makes me sound a tit, but there you go... I don't know why I felt the need to tell you all that completely useless and irrellevant information. Anyway, yes - The Mars Volta - I'm listening to this a lot at the moment, discovering new hidden treasures with each play.

I like Trembler or TS.
Anyway, Mars Volta, very good live.
Right now, J Xaverre - These Acid Stars, but I've just paused it for Neighbours. Karl's drink problem is hilarious.
Its amazing that this post has stayed on topic for 30-odd pages, it usually only takes half a page before it goes pear.
Have I just tempted fate?

Have I just tempted fate? TS it is then - to be honest, I think that's what I usually use... anyway, maybe the on topic factor is due to this thread being about the thing that all of us seem to have in common as an obsession - I hate the idea of being obsessed about anything, but I have to recognise music has an obsession-sized place in my life... despite that, yet again, I seem to be dragging yet another thread OT myself.... err, well... still listening to Danger! Danger! Mars Vowwwlta - MBV queued up next.
Oh, and what on earth are they going to dream up next for the Kennedy family? Haven't they been though everything that can possibly happen yet, short of them all dying in a freak elephant stampede or something. And I thought my family was dysfunctional...
