Listening to a stream from the Cocteau Twins website (http://www.cocteautwins.com/html/media/audio.html) - there's definitely some gorgeousness in there, but the recordings/encodings are pretty bad so not great sound quality. Still worth listening to though...

I Surrender - David Sylvian ...

AGAIN!

Look at these beautiful lyrics though...

* I opened up the pathway of the heart
The flowers died embittered from the start.
That night I crossed the bridge of
sighs and I surrendered
I looked back and glimpsed the outline of a boy
His life of sorrows now collapsing into joy
And tonight the stars are all aligned and I surrender
A mother cries beneath a southern sky and I surrender

Recording angels and the poets of the night
Bring back the trophies of the battles that we fight

Searchlights fill the open skies and I surrender

Outrageous cries of love have called me back
Derailed the trains of thought, demolished wayward tracks

You tell me I've no need to wonder why I just surrender

I stand too close to see the sleight of hand
How she found this child inside the frightened man

Tonight I'm learning how to fly and I surrender

I've travelled all this way for your embrace
Enraptured by the recognition on your face

Hold me now while my old life dies tonight and I surrender
My mother cries beneath the open skies and I surrender

An ancient evening just before the fall
The light in your eyes, the meaning of it all

Birds fly and fill the summer skies and I surrender

She throws the burning books into the sea
Come find the meaning of the word inside of me

It's alright the stars are all aligned and I surrender
My mother cries beneath the moonlit skies and I surrender

My body turns to ashes in her hands
The disappearing world of footprints in the sand

Tell me now that this love will never die and I'll surrender
My mother cries beneath the open skies and I surrender *

I rest my case.

Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues

I got two tapes of Johnny Cash with a gift card I got for Christmas from my brother; full editions of his classic concerts from Folsom and San Quinten prisons, made back in 1968 and '69 respectively. You won't hear a more electrified or appreciative crowd.

San Quinten has one particulary poignant moment for me. When I heard the uncensored version of A Boy Named Sue I thought of how many times me and Dad heard the 8-Track he had with the b-word bleeped out.

Dad passed his love of those old-time rock and country stars on to me via the bunch of tapes he had playing in his '69 star green Pontiac Firebird. I might haved have loved that stuff anyway, but that is how it turned out.

...He said; 'Son, this world is rough
and if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
and I knew I wouldn't be there to see you through...

...So I hope you thank me before I die
for the gravel in your guts and the spit in your eye
'cause I'm the son of a bitch who named you Sue'.

Both Johnny Cash and my Dad are gone now; and I trust there is peace in the valley for them both.

Ah, yes. Cash's two prison gig albums are legendary, with just cause. It makes you wonder doesn't it...that was way back over 35 years ago and Cash was huge...why hasn't anyone done anything like that since?

On goes Cash's excellent cover of Nick Cave's 'The Mercy Seat'.

True, there are no major artists doing prison gigs that make the news, anyway.
I just can't see today's big country stars doing stuff like that. But then again, back in the '60's, a lot of the country and rock and blues artists had no small aquaintence with jail. And that gave them a heart for the ones on lockdown. The scene is a bit sterilized these days. Ain't nobody gonna be a hit if they have done time.
Except in hip-hop of course. In some venues, it may be mandatory.

I think Steve Earle is the most likely to, other than that I can't see anyone doing it, except possibly Nick Cave perhaps. Too many hip-hop artists walk the walk, and they can back it up with plenty of swagger and a huge entourage, but ultimately I think they'd be too scared to do anything like a prison concert.

Back to the country discussion, it's incredibly watered down right now. I didn't really dig country much before hand, but as with most music genres, the best stuff isn't always the most well-known. Right now, most of it's pop with a slight country lilt to it, but is just pop with violins right now.

I don't like getting too angry at the most popular artists out there. After all, I am a wedding dj in the summer, and have to play all that stuff, anyway.

Rickyroo
06-02-2005, 20:35
Not angry. If someone is successful, fair play, congratulations and enjoy it while it lasts...etc etc etc...

What I don't like is someone trying to skewer some extra cred by saying "We're R 'N' B", when clearly they're pop, but happen to be black. Or when they say they're country, but they're just pop with a stetson. Honesty would be refreshing.

It's a boss tune (oo ark at me talking street) and to honour its greatness I have Quicksand from hunk dory, which I have'nt listened to for years .. I love it when the song and dismalness of the lyrics changes and turns into the hopefull upbeat ...

I'm not a prophet
or a stone age man
Just a mortal
with the potential of a superman
I'm living on
I'm tethered to the logic
of Homo Sapien
Can't take my eyes
from the great salvation
Of bullshit faith
If I don't explain what you ought to know
You can tell me all about it
On, the next Bardo

Its a nice touch I think.

Sorry I'm going on, I'm pissed off and bored.

Infact I have decided to keep the whole hunky dory album on, its settling my mood. oooo we're on andy warhol now ...

also why the noise is here. I live in a high rise block of flats and the planes fly really low and it scares the fuck out of me. It sounds like a nuke landing. It gets me all tense.

It's strange because Ryuichi Sakamoto provided an original score to the film of Wuthering Heights, which was excellent.
