View Full Version : What are you listening to now?

I just got home from work and am listening to WUEV 91.5 FM. There is a new dj team on for a 12:00 to 1:00 AM slot. One of them is named TWB, I think, and she is from Linconshire, England. What an accent. I called her and requested Goldfrapp, I thought they would not have it, and she thought that was pathetic. She loves Black Cherry, and she said she would search for it and try to get something on next week. She will play Massive Attack at the end of her show.
Right now: Snow Patrol--Light Up

OK guys
Been thinking about what should be on a New Order best of...all night...
Tell me if you think anything should go or if I missed anything okay?
Right...
1. Ceremony
2. Everything's Gone Green
3. Temptation
4. Age Of Consent
5. Your Silent Face
6. Ecstasy
7. Blue Monday (Original Version, not crappy 1988 mix)
8. Love Vigilantes
9. The Perfect Kiss (12" mix - bongo fury intro)
10. This Time Of Night
11. Subculture (Album version, not dodgy 12" mix)
12. Face-Up
13. Bizarre Love Triangle (12" mix - uber-snare drum intro)
14. All Day Long
15. True Faith (Original version, not crappy 1994 house mix)
16. Touched By The Hand Of God (12" mix - no contest)
17. Fine Time
18. Round And Round
19. Run
20. Vanishing Point
21. Regret
22. Everyone Everywhere
23. Crystal
24. 60 Miles An Hour
25. Run Wild
26. Here To Stay
That'll make a top-notch double CD best-of. :)
I've obviously included more from Low Life and Technique than say Republic and Brotherhood. Okay then...any disagreements?
:)

Ooo no, no, no, no! Eeek, I didn't say i didn't like 'Everything's Gone Green' and 'Thieves Like Us'! I absolutely adore those two tracks! I was lamenting the fact that the first two discs on the retro box set are close to perfection, except for the fact that those two songs aren't on it! 'Green' is stuck in the middle of that so-so remix disc, and 'Thieves' isn't on any of the 4 discs at all! Which means that no New Order best of is perfect! Saying that, is any best-of perfect?
And yes, 'State of the Nation' is rubbish. Second worst New Order single (#1 being World in Motion, of course)
The best of....
1) The Perfect Kiss (12" mix of course, the Low-Life version is awful)
2) Everything's Gone Green
3) Round and Round (version on Technique)
4) Crystal (single mix, album version drags on)
5) 1963 (original '87 version)
6) This Time of Night
7) Fine Time (Technique version)
8) Ecstasy
9) Touched by the Hand of God
10) True Faith
11) Shit....the last song on Technique, is it called 'Dream Attack'?
12) 60 Miles an Hour
13) World
14) Ceremony
15) In a Lonely Place
16) Cries and Whispers
17) Your Silent Face
18) First track from the Movement album
19) Age of Consent
20) Temptation (eek, can't decide between original version or Substance mix)
21) All Day Long
22) Sub-culture (12" mix: I prefer it to the Low-Life version!)
23) Bizarre Love Triangle (version on Substance)
24) Regret
25) Everyone Everywhere
26) Love Vigilantes
27) Face Up
Eeek, that's a bit too long. Still, my signature is longer. I'll have to cut that down in a sec.

WHAT!?!?!
No Blue Monday?!?! One of the five most important singles of all time!
Otherwise good selection. Maybe we could include a family tree and then we could include Monaco, Electronic and The Other Two...?

I like 'All the Way' off Technique!
No 'Blue Monday' or 'Theives like us' on your comp! I know BM is a bit over heard but it's a very important record!!!
I love the Ferente version of Bizairre Love Traingle it would have to go on my comp!

Although.... I'm not listening to Low, cos 'Speed of Life is part of a Bowie best of I made up, so right now I'm listening to 'Fantastic Voyage'. Good tune.

U2: 'Wire'
Awesome rhythms, the best guitar the Edge ever got his frisky fingers on, and a wall of sound so thick you could spread it on a big fat loaf of bread. This tune gets the job done. Oh yes. Why aren't U2 bonkers like this more often?
Also doing the rounds....
Saint Etienne: 'Urban Clearway', aka, the unofficial theme tune to a cool 70's/80's cop series.
R.E.M: 'Second Guessing', cool underrated tune from the early years.
Van Halen: 'Panama', cos life ain't life without those guilty pleasures!
Aztec Camera: 'Pillar to Post', a bit of joy!

We sail through endless skies, stars shine like eyes, the black night sighs. The moon in silver trees, falls down in tears, light of the night. The earth, a purple blaze of sapphire haze, in orbit always.

I agree. 'Yes' is one of my fave ever songs.
I've got Daft Punk's Discovery on now. I was really pissed off because my CD of it is fucked, but when I was at my parents' house the other day I found an old cassette I made of it.
Which is really good, because the shitty tape quality reminds me of listening to it on my old walkman around college and has made the album even more nostalgic for me.

'Glamour Profession' by Steely Dan: makes me want next summer to happen right now!
Blimey, I haven't listened to Discovery in ages: something of a constant listen when I was back at university. I couldn't get enough of it. Two gripes: why was 'Too Long' too long and why on earth was 'Nightvision' a pathetically short minute and a half? That lil piece of music is so beautiful, I wish it would go on forever!I remember hearing 'Voyager' at a mate's house get-together and wow did it sound good. I just remembered 'Mountains' by Prince and the Revolution was played too that night! Result!

Oh god yes. What a song. Amazing guitar solo in particular, but the whole band just seem to be having an incredible time on this one, they sound really excited, cept of course for Bryan Ferry, who keeps his cool and then some! One of the most purely exciting songs they've ever recorded, along with 'The Thrill Of it All', 'Prairie Rose' and 'Out of the Blue'.

It is a damn fine live recording. Some great performances of some uber-songs. I'll get you a copy of the live DVD (I have contacts... ) because that is simply stunning. The live version of Both Ends Burning is AMAZING! It just makes the studio version completely redundant. Uber. And the backing band are probably the most beautiful band you will ever see. Bryan looks nice in his various Tuxes too.
Beauty Queen has to be one of my favourite Roxy tracks. I love that build up in the song right before the motorcycle roars off into the distance. Divine :)
Ooh...and the way in which the concert ends, I think, is superb. But now you have to see the DVD to find out...

Ahhh, Talking Heads, i have two of their albums (Fear of Music and Remain in Light) and they're on my 'must listen' list. Got them cos of the Brian Eno connection, and cos one of my favourite albums ever (Echo and the Bunnymen's Heaven up here) was said to be influenced by it. Love what I've heard by the band, and they inspired one of the best songs ever: Brian Eno's 'King's Lead Hat' (the title's an anagram of said band), which is just funky, bonkers, exhilarating, hilarious and wonderful all at once.
Ahh, as the sun emerges from the clouds outside, I'm listening to the beautiful 'Sunset' by Roxy Music!

Get the Talking Head CD of Stop Making Sense, tis equally brilliant as the concert DVD. It's genius. David Byrne playing acoustic Psycho Killer, before being joined by Tina Weymouth on bass for Heaven. Chris Frantz joining in on drums for Thank You For Sending Me An Angel...with each extra song you get an extra musician...magic.
Highlights are Once In A Lifetime, Making Flippy Floppy, Heaven, What A Day That Was, Burning Down The House, Girlfriend Is Better...:)

Classic rock!?!? Qua!?!?
More of a jazz/blues stylist, but I'll let that lie for now. I only have three of his albums, but then he does only have six! First saw him in 1996 when I saw G3 live in London. It was him, Steve Vai (legend) and Joe Satriani. Excellent night.

Heh heh, i got 10 Eno albums! Including collaborations, that is (Ambient 2 and The Pearl), and I'm tempted to go for the current remasters that came out recently!
More Eno now, but different album: 'No One Recieving'. I don't know for sure if Phil Collins plays on this song, but he is on the Before and After Science album.....

I got Smile (or SMiLE!) the other week too, and it's good stuff, i really like it. 'Wonderful' and 'Wind Chimes' are really gorgeous. New versions of 'Good Vibrations' and 'Heroes and Villains' are very good, but the originals are frankly unbeatable. Really like the new versions of 'Cabin Essence' and 'Surf's Up' though. It's a great album, but I listened to so much Beach Boys in the build up to the album release that I've had to take it easy in regards to listening to them for a while now!

A 2manydj's mix that was on radio 1 on christmas day a few years ago I have on minidisc.
Quite interesting, it's got the original Richard X 'Freak Like Me' bootleg, with the proper vocal, not the sugababes (who lost the plot with Donaghy's departure!)
It's also got a mix of Missy Elliot over the top of Elastica's Connection. Abso-fucking-lute genius.

I agree with you on all the "big tunes" on the album (Good Vibrations et al), but I could've done with a few less interludes! Still, it's a fantastic album and sounds totally fresh 30 year after it (or the original tapes at least) was made - and that's a pretty rare thing.

Not a lot actually Elska. My friend Trent was living in Japan a few years back and he got it for me. Cost me £25, because CD's in Japan are so expensive, but normally they float around the £40 mark if you can find them.

Wow!
Just heard Kevin Spacey singing Bobby Darin's 'Mack The Knife'. He was amazing! What a voice! He's touring soon apparently too.
Blown away. Spaceo is The Man

Was that on the Parkinson show? Seemed like a thoroughly decent chap, too.
Playing now: The Specials - Rudy, a message.

Love The Fall. ...Why do you ask?
I just guessed that someone with the capacity to tolerate Crimson would like the Fall.
I'm currently addicted to Bend Sinister. A complete album if ever I heard one.

Ha ha!
Yeah, too true. I know that Crimson and The Fall are becoming quite accquired tastes these days :D Probably because both bands are not exactly good-looking (no offense to Robert Fripp or Mark E Smith) and so not MTV friendly enough. But personally I don't care, they're both geniuses. And they both deserve to be filthy rich, which unfortunately neither of them are :(
Just as an aside, I don't really like the 70's Crimson material that much. The 80's stuff is brilliant and the 90's and current stuff is just awesome.
Bend Sinister ?! Top bloke! That does indeed redefine 'complete' album. Nice one.
