People steer clear of me like I have the plague or something :( I even have clean knickers on, so I don't see why no ones putting there face down there.

Apparently William Shatner has a new album out this Christmas...
:D
And unfortunately I can connect him to David Sylvian in 3 moves, which is actually really depressing :(
Right this moment I have on Natacha Atlas 'Ayeshteni'

All of you need this album!!!

I dug out an old Cyndi Lauper album last night - forgot how great some of her songs were!
There's a really old one called I'M GONNA BE STRONG which is amazing - makes u wanna cry at the end.......*sniff*
A more recent one called THAT'S WHAT I THINK i really love too - it kinda sounds all oldy-worldy - i can almost imaging men morris-dancing to it in the village square! Ha Ha
She was on TV (on G.Norton I think) not too long ago promoting her newest album, cover versions, & she still kicks ass!
BIG UP to the Lauper...u still rock girl.

She even looks a tad like Alison Goldfrapp on the cover of her forthcoming album!!

Heard Willy Shatners new album today. Avoid if not a fan - he hasn't cahnged one bit - infact he's been encouraged.
Basically if anyone has heard Ben Folds - Fear of Pop album it's the same but with William on each track (Ben wrote most of it!|). It's a bit hit and miss but it's worth it alone for last 'country homage' track Has Been. Another classic song!!!

I have an old calypso record, which I love (undated, but late 50s, from the illustrations), made Cunard Eagle Airways. I guess, they sold them in-flight and on their cruses. Now, I find that its likely to be a rarity, in that there only seems to be a single Google hit (http://google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=calypso+cunard-eagle-airways&btnG=Search), for it. I think I'd better scan the cover and get it up on The Web someplace, it'll be free of copyright in a few years :p

Yes yes!
Unfortunately, I'm now going to tell you all about him...
:D
In the early 1980's Robert Fripp gave up being a professional touring and recording guitarist and took to teaching 'Guitar Craft'. One of his most prodigal students was Seattle-born Trey Gunn. Gunn eventually moved from guitar to Stick (an 8-string fretless and body-less guitar/bass) and from there to the Warr Touch Guitar (an 8-20 string guitar/bass, on which it is possible to play bass, rhythm and lead at the same time).
When David Sylvian and Robert Fripp joined forces in the early nineties, Gunn was brought in as Warr/Stick/Bassist. And when they toured Europe in 1993 (The Damage albums) Trey was musical director of the band and rhythm buddy to Pat Mastellotto (who played drums with The Rembrandts - the Friends theme - and much later ProjeKcts 3&4 and then King Crimson 2000).
Trey has released a series of OUTSTANDING instrumental albums, with occasional vocals from Toyah (!?) Alice (no idea) and his wife Serpentine (who scares me).
But in answer to the question...yes he has played with our Lord and Master David.
:)

Loads of Saint Etienne. Lovely stuff. The best sugary, floaty, cuddly pop ever. Honestly, listen to 'Who Do You Think You Are?' and try to deny that it's just 90's pop at it's absolute, absolute best. Or 'He's on the Phone', 'You're in a Bad Way', 'Avenue', 'Mario's Cafe', 'Spring', 'Join Our Club', fuck it!!! All of what they've done. They're wonderful!
I read a review of their best of saying that a) considering how poppy they were, they were cheated in terms of where they ended up in the charts. I don't even think they even got into the top 10! Also, the review says that there's an odd recurring theme throughout their output involving the act of holding hands and all round innocent, bless love as opposed to naughty sex.
'I know you want to hold my hand/I know you're going to love my band!' from the ridiculously brilliant 'Join Our Club' is a rather good example.

Yes yes to the Saint Etienne loving! I have everything by them EVER! With exception to the fan club only releases as I has to sell them in times of dire financial stress :(
I got my copy of 'The Missadventures Of Saint Etienne' from Japan when it first came out, now if you look on ebay, they go for about £40/50!
Q said that they "made the 90's seem like the 60's, but with better drugs." And you know what? I think they were right. And yes, they never had a top ten hit...although 'She's On The Phone' did storm into the top eleven :D
Saw them in 2000 at Bristol University around the time of Sound Of Water. They kicked ass in so many ways. Next time they do a special gig in London we must go...

Oh yes, that would be cool! I'd love to see them live! My fave song by them is 'Goodnight Jack' from Good Humor, I saw them perform it on telly (a glastonbury appearance) and I was stunned. Bought the album the next day for a silly amount of money and bizzarrely, i've spent way too long coming around to get all of their albums. I still haven't got all their stuff: I only recently bought Tiger Bay (love, LOVE 'Urban Clearway'), and I want to get Sound of Water as soon as I can cos 'How We Used to Live' is one of the best things I've ever heard.

Well, the best of all the albums I have by St Etienne is the wonderful So Tough, which features superb singles like 'Avenue' and 'Hobart Paving' (the latter being possibly the most tranquil and beautiful single of all of the 90's: heh heh, I've oversold it now). The brilliant 'You're in a Bad Way' is on the album, but it is a different version to the one that's more well known. You get 'Mario's Cafe' which is just so gorgeous, really puts me in a wonderful mood. And 'Leafhound', my second fave SE song is just a masterpiece. The album flows amazingly, the sound snippets from random films, TV shows and recorded chatter are cool and well, i don't know what else to say. Just a fantastic album.
I haven't got their debut, Foxbase Alpha, but that's meant to be wicked. Tiger Bay is the really, really poppy album, that's got 'He's on the Phone' on it, Good Humor is a bit more chilled, a bit more lightweight but still very, very enjoyable. Haven't heard Sound of Water or Finstierre yet.
An awesome place to start listening is the 'Smash the System' 2 cd compilation of singles, album tracks and b-sides, cos it's got so much that's good on it. Get that and So Tough!
I'll get that essay done soon, Rickyroo! ;)

Love 'Face Up' and especially love that chorus!
Purchased Saint Etienne's Sound of Water today and listened to it once already: very, very mellow, very nice, very sweet! 'Downey, Ca' is gorgeous, and I'm not the only one who thought it sounded a little Halls and Oatsey! 'Heart Failed' and 'Just a Little Overcome' are brilliant! A very good album!
And now New Order's finished and following it is Prince's ace 'Controversy'.

Problem with New Order though is their poor best-of's...
Substance has all the singles up till '87 so no Touched By The Hand Of God, Regret or any Technique singles (or World In Motion thank God). The Best Of has no Temptation and is full of dodgy remixes. And International still has no Temptation or Everythings Gone Green.
Grr!!!
Love Perfect Kiss, especially those pesky crickets in the background! :D
diamente
19-10-2004, 00:00
Substance is about the best single best of out there, despite there being no post-1987 stuff like you say. But the Cd version has the b-sides too, some of which are amazing ('Lonesome Tonight', 'Cries and Whispers' and especially '1963'). Still, if i had a best of, I'd put 'This Time of Night', 'Ecstasy', 'Your Silent Face', 'Age of Consent' and 'Everyone Everywhere' on it too! The first two discs of the Retro box set is a fantastic 'hits' and 'fan' compilation, but aggghhh! No 'Everything's Gone Green' or 'Thieves Like Us'! Oh the pain of it all.....

A New Order best of needs Your Silent Face and especially Age Of Consent, none of the best of's ever seem to have any of the Power, Corruption And Lies stuff. Why not?
Retro was quite good bu the live selection was a bit poor and the remixes...less said the better...

I've got 'Substance' and 'Everything's Gone Green' is probably my fave!

Hey, no need to be so *KAPOW!*
I love Substance, and Everythings Gone Green is pure class.
The 12" remix of Subculture blows though.
Back in your face!
:D
Woo, this could get messy...

Sorry, it was supposed to be in Diamente's face.
But you are right, New Order (as are Joy Division) are a collector's nightmare.

Question...
What exactly are we apurting into each others faces here?

Er, I don't really know.
But the fact that you've used the word 'spurting' is interesting from a Freudian point of view!

Too late! Thousands of psychologists are now searching for the root of your repression!
I just really like 'Everything's Gone Green' and 'Thieves Like Us.' Whilst the Big 'D' doesn't. I like to think I'm putting Hooky's bass in his face.
I'd take it out though if he agreed that 'State of the Nation' is rubbish.
Jeez... I didn't think I'd ended up logging off tonight holding Hooky's bass in Diamente's face.
Night all! I'm up in four hours. Ugh.
