What a classic!

I'm listening to the second Zero7 album, which appears to be a pale imitation of their first.

A total waste of 12 quid, and such a shame because "Simple Things" was just so lovely........

Never did get round to listening to the Zero 7 album, though I have heard 'Somersault' from it, which may be my fave song by them, now that I'm fed up of hearing 'Destiny' used in every 'Let's get the fuck out of here and buy a house in the country' shows/adverts.

Listening to the very, very nice 'I'd Have You Anytime' by George Harrison.

I hate it when songs get diluted through their constant use in ads. Grrrr.

Listening to 'A Day in the Life' by The Beatles. Still my favourite song by them. When it switches from utter mental cacophony into Paul McCartney doing his chirpy sing-a-long bit, now that's a moment of utter genius.

Ahhhh, but when it switches back from that section into John Lennon's 'ahhhhhhaaaahhh's, now that frankly is THE moment in any song for me at the time being. It just gives me the total shivers just thinking about it. Now when i actually LISTEN to that bit, woah, then you're looking at someone who's just seen God or something. Absolute brilliance.

I was very fortunate, back in 1982, to get a copy of 'The Message' at a bargain record store cheap. It had just come out, and I had heard the critical buzz. So it seemed as if this platter had just dropped out of heaven by accident. Good for me, that was a lynchpin of my music listening history.

sounding a bit musically challenged here .. but is that granmaster flash u r on about ??? I only know one song I'm afraid.

greenwell64
13-09-2004, 00:42
Yes it is; The Message was a pioneering rap by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five in 1982. He had come up in the Brooklyn scene, and this is the one that made his national reputation. It pretty much made hip-hop a serious genre.

KaruMoo
13-09-2004, 00:47
O yeah .. I know of that and the legend the song beholds ... bet it was a tad good to be around in the early 80's .. I never used to think so infact I kinda hate the 80's but I'm warming.

I was 2 in 1982 btw so I dont think I'd be out buying records.

greenwell64
13-09-2004, 01:04
I really started shelling out for discs and tapes in 83' when I went into the Air Force and could buy them for about $2.00 cheaper at the Base Exchange. Thought my time in service was short, I tanked up on good stuff (REM, Yes, OMD, Flock Of Seagulls, etc.), and some not so good stuff (Chris DeBurgh-responsible for one of the worst videos ever, Don't Pay The Ferryman).

KaruMoo

I'm listening to lost in music by sister slegde .. charming.

greenwell64
13-09-2004, 01:11
Let me clarify that. By discs, I meant L.P.'s and 45's. Compact Discs did start coming out in 1983, but at that time players were very expensive. I did not have a CD player until the nineties. Oddly enough, the prices for CD's are not all that different from then.

KaruMoo
13-09-2004, 01:15
I vaguely remember my stepmums brother going broke for a cd ??? he must have been really poor but I did'nt own a cd player until 96 :( until then it was still tape and vinyl for me. I had thousands of tapes and now I have none ... where did they all go??

I'm listening to ray charles and shake a tail feather .. oo baby.

greenwell64
13-09-2004, 01:32
In an act of lazy short-sightedness, I sold off all my lp's so I wouldn't have to lug them around to a new apartment. I still have tons of cassettes, though. My oldest ones are Roxy Music's Avalon, and Dire Straights' Love Over Gold. I got those, along with my first Walkman, during my Air Force Basic Training in October 1982.

'Porcupine' by Echo and the Bunnymen. The first half sounds like the mantric soundtrack to some weird cult ceremony, the second half like a peek or a glimpse into the abyss, the unknown, and it would be scary if it wasn't so exhilarating, so ingenious, so exciting, so, so, goood!!! Sorry, i get a bit overexcited about this band sometimes, but then they are gods on earth in my opinion.

A month ago it was The Rolling Stones, a few weeks ago it was The Beach Boys, and now Echo and the Bunnymen are once again my favourite band ever at the moment. Time to lay down thy raincoat and groove once more...

Listening to one of the prettiest, most beautiful songs I've heard in ages. 'I Hear You Now' by Jon and Vangelis, and yes, that is Jon Anderson from Yes. In theory, this sounds one like one of the uncoolest things on earth, but fuck it, as most of what's regarded as cool on this planet i think is shit anyway. fact is this is a gorgeous song, it sounds like Kraftwerk's divine 'Neon Lights' except there's an unabashed embracing of unrestricted beauty and pure lovely sentiment. Now: Ani Difranco - Tiptoe

'tis a very short, very moving acapella dedicated to her aborted child:

tiptoeing through the used condoms
strewn on the piers
off the west side highway
sunset behind
the skyline of jersey
walking towards the water
with a foetus holding court in my gut
my body highjacked
my tits swollen and sore
the river has more colors at sunset
than my sock drawer ever dreamed of
i could wake up screaming sometimes
but i don't
i could step off the end of this pier but
i've got shit to do
and i've an appointment on tuesday
to shed uninvited blood and tissue
i'll miss you i say
to the river to the water
to the son or daughter
i thought better of
i could fall in love
with jersey at sunset
but i leave the view to the rats
and tiptoe back

Lately I've been trying to get Echo and the Bunnymen's 'Reverberation' on WinMX (forget trying to buy it, it's obscenly difficult to find!), which is the album the band made without Ian McCulloch. Heard it's actually meant to be pretty good, though obviously without Mac it's not gonna sound nearly as fine!

Bit o' this, bit o' that...

The Beatles: Sexy Sadie
Dubstar: Stars
The Doors: Peace Frog
Japan: Swing
Echo and the Bunnymen: The Game
Jon and Vangelis: I Hear You Now

Both sides of Hounds of Love are as good as the other in my opinion. Both are fantastic! However, I think The Dreaming is better than both to be frank! As is The Kick Inside!

Still well into the Cocteaus, moody! Regular ones being played at the mo are 'My Love Paramour', 'Orange Appled', 'Mizake the Mizan', 'How to Bring a Blush to the Snow', 'The Thinner the Air' and the first three songs from the Moon and the Melodies album. Once more I must congratulate and give thanks to the wisdom of many people on this board who have pointed me towards more and more lush music!

Yeah, Japan are just begging to be compiled properly: either a best of combining both the Hansa and Virgin eras, or (as the first two albums are not for all Japan fans) a double cd compilation covering the last three albums. And Swing would have to be on it, cos it's simply one of the best songs they ever did, when they really broke free from their influences and created a sound that still sounds top dollar today. What a tune.

Listening to stadium rock at its absolute best: Simple Minds' top 'Up on the Catwalk'. Play very loud for instant results (and pissed off neighbours)!

The Smiths: 'Half a Person', a song which so, so beautifully manages to combine humour with despair. I actually think this is their best ever effort at creating a true bittersweet sound: it makes me laugh in places, but then that 'that's the story of my life' bit at the end (those guitars!) used to really make me get all sad and wistful too. What a lovely song! The Smiths are gods!

This week I bought the album VOODOO CHIC by Scottish chanteuse Jackie Joyce (aka HELICOPTER GIRL). Her vocals are very Earth Kitt-enish. Love it.

The music is not as grandiose or adventurist as Goldfrapp...but Jackie's vocals sit very nicely on top of the subdued (but mostly acoustic) musical backdrop

I am a MAJOR Sylvian/Japan fan as are a fair few on here.

Japan was my very first gig at the Colston Hall, November 15th 1982 and I've seen David in concert in 88 ( 8 times - followed most of tour round, rest of dates cancelled as Steve Jansen cut his hand ), both nights at the Royal Albert Hall with Robert Fripp in 93, in 94 at Royal Festival Hall, in 2001 at Nottingham Royal Court Centre and yes Rickyroo I was indeed at the Colston Hall.

I've met him numerous times too, including in the afternoon before the Colston Hall gig last year and after gig met Steve too.

Also seen Mick Karn play at the Jazz Cafe in the early 90s, with Richard and Steve playing with him.

So YES major major major Sylvian fan!

My fave tracks ( although they can change) are - Some Kind Of Fool, Before The Bullfight, Orpheus, Damage, Silver moon, Nostalgia, Linoleum, The Other Side of Life ( HOW good was THAT that at the gig last year?!!!) and so many others..

Next time he tours we'll be on the front row! guaranteed! ( although I was on the 2nd row last year!)

Sandii

I'm guessing he has some company tonight...

But I'd really rather have some sleep...

The Music - The Music

I fucking hate it when bands name albums after themselves... Such a wasted opportunity.

Right now, I am listening to 'French Connection' on the web from KKCR Kaua'i, Hawiiai. An all french music program hosted by one sweet voiced lass named Isobel Winniger. What can I say, listening to Jane Birkin has got me bit by the french bug but hard.

Whoopy Snorp: The Residents Hour. It a radio show from KRVS in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and it is one hour from 11--12 PM each Monday night dedicated to the Residents, those destroyers of normality. I saw on the Mute website that they are reissuing the Commercial Album from the early eighties. So it's time to get your head really bent.
