(deer, if you're really against this, please say and I'll delete the thread.)

So why hasn't anyone thought of this idea before? (Apart from the fact it's illeagal.)
Here's a thread for music sharing. Upload/ download and request!

Here are my first five. Some avant-garde hip-hop. All .zip and mp3 I believe.

My FTP client is still uploading it so you might want to wait a few minutes... It's about 75% done. My DSL connection is sucking lately. My roommate's to blame. She wanted shitty ATT&T/Yahoo DSL coz it's cheaper than one of the smaller providers I wanted to get who don't use PPPoE or any of that other crap that I hate. I wanted a straight connection to the 'net and a static IP.

The album is free to download, so I'm doing Erica a favour by advertising it!
It's a power noize album, with a rather excellent version of that old hit Popcorn.

Right, if this does get taken down we need a contingency plan. We set up a 'club' where this sort of stuff is facilitated by PM's.

Membership of the club is based upon offering something new for everyone in the club every week.

And no shit music.

I have a contingency plan for this...

I've created an email account, the idea is that I spread on the username and password, and people log in and email their tracks to the address itself or the links to the download site.

The only problem with this idea is that the providers some times twig to the idea (by the fact that there's hundreds of accessing of the user account from IP's all over the world) and they're somtimes closed.
So, if any one likes the idea just give me a PM and I'll send you the name and password, I think that's a better way than just posting it, since if I just do that anyone can get onto it and use it for all sorts of random things.

Plus once I pass it on, that person can do the same, and so on.
Any takers?
Or shall this just be a back up?

Dan, it's a good idea but maybe just keep it on the back burner for now until we see what happens with this thread. Although if my hunch is right I'm sure this thread won't last too much longer.

Another thing, maybe we should just limit the sharing to tracks *not* albums, that way people don't take advantage and it's more like a mixtape trading thing in lieu of blatant *cough* stealing*cough*.

Email sounds a good idea. 'Stealing' aspect doesn't bother me personally as I only give stuff a once over before making a decision to buy or delete - what's the point in having music if it isn't sitting on your shelf in testament to how cool you are?

Steph - the shitty format is because I have to use my Stepdad's laptop for my home internet access and that's all he's got to rip music with.

I'm with you on the stealing thing (I do the same...delete or buy it outright), but I'm not so sure everyone coming to this thread will have the same intentions. Plus if we limit it to tracks this thread has a better chance of not getting stomped on by some hoofs.

Really liking the Jamie Lidell stuff. It's a keeper and I'll be picking it up. Crazy though, it's sort of like a mix of old soul with some '80's funk thrown in. It's nice to jam to at work.

"Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" is good in that it has most styles on it so can be used as a springboard for "the albums you'll like if you like these tracks and not those". "Disintegration" is the album I put on when I'm at a really, really low ebb - I recall a late night post-a-thon with Ruby about that !!

I don't know if you remember the Some Bizzare promo video that ran on USA Network's gone (but not forgotten) Night Flight show in the mid '80's; but that's the one I know.

As for Don't Argue, we had that song on a reel-to-reel tape at WSWI in 1990. The voices on that bit are from a film the US Army made for soldiers in occupied Germany after World War II.

Here are a couple of mixes I did yonks ago.
'Atlantis' is uptempo and has, amongst others, The Irish Eurovision entry a la Father Ted 'My Lovely Horse', more horses, Kraftwerk, The Housemartins, Royksopp, Stakker and some band called 'Goldfrapp'.
'Small Light' is very chilled with quite a few alternating tracks being from a CD by a couple of blokes from Japan* and also includes an appearance from Der 'Frapp.
Both files are quite big as the mixes are over an hour long each.

My only request with people making these compilations is *please* group them into some sort of album. If not when you drag the file into an application like iTunes all the tracks get scattered all over the place. I've no fecking clue but get rid of those DS files, they weren't in my original folder.

Strange.........my original folder still says this:

softlad
02-06-2007, 00:48
"The .DS_Store files are created by the Finder during its normal course of operation but they are invisible by default. The Finder will automatically put a .DS_Store file into every folder you have opened. These files are used to save the positions of icons, the size of the respective Finder window, the window's background, and many more view options. While professional users consider the .DS_Store files to be a design flaw of the Mac OS X Finder, a mechanism like this is necessary when opening Finder windows for exchangeable disk media to give former users of the classic Mac OS the same user experience they had in previous operating system versions. If you don't like to see the .DS_Store files, replace the Finder by a better file management application."

Brian,

Browse to a folder with mp3 files in using Windows Explorer
Right-click on an mp3 file
Choose "Open with" then "Choose Program...."
After a pause you'll get a list of things capable of playing an mp3
Click once on the program you'd prefer to use so that it highlights
Click the "Always use the selected program" option
Click OK
In most cases this will stop the wrong software from starting up when you double-click an mp3. The same can be done for other file types.
If this fails (some software has to be told to let go in other ways) let us know as I have a potential step 2 waiting in the wings.......

Uploading mine now, as we speak. If you think Key-Your-Eee had a varied one then you'd better brace yourself.

Mine has 23 tracks stretching from 1967 to this year, and from 2min to 10min.
Electronica, rock, drum'n'flute, covers, remixes, dubstep, hip hop and an accordion-led torch song.

Tempted?

808 State - Flow Coma
Animal Magnet - Welcome To The Monkeyhouse (Extended)
Arcade Fire - The Guns of Brixton
Bjork - Desired constellation (Ben Frost's School of Emotional Engineering mix)
Coil - Tattooed Man
Department S - Is Vic There
Devo - Whip It
Dillinja - Angels Fell
DJ Acucrack feat Toni Halliday - So To Speak (KMFDM mix)
Dr Octagon - Blue Flowers
Electrelane - The Invisible Dog
Junior Boys - So This Is Goodbye
Ladytron - Destroy Everything You Touch (Vector Lovers Edit)
Nathan Fake - The Sky Was Pink
Oneric - Silver Birch Solstice
Paul Hartnoll feat Robert Smith - Please (Culprit 1 mix)
Scott Walker - Montague Terrace (In Blue)
Skream - Rutten
Sonic Youth - Tunic (Song For Karen)
The Besnard Lakes - You Lied To Me
The Cramps - Bikini Girls With Machine Guns
The Cult - The Witch (Remix)
The Shamen - Adam Strange

The tracks are not numbered in any way so you can order them how you wish. My album title has been put into each so they hold together as an album. That may annoy some but it's a no-win whichever way I did it. Just grab them and enjoy them as you see fit......

You can use software that does it for you or, at the easiest level, just right click on a file and choose properties, then advanced properties. You can put the track number in there.

Alternatively just prefix the filename with 01, 02, 03 etc and we can soon see what you were after!

mmm. I'm torn on this thread. I think it's good to try and buy, i.e. then if you like it you pay the artist. But then I've grown up with the records and cds in my hand and also worked with bands so realise how hard it is for them to make any money.

It's just I reckon if i was 16 now i'd just get into the habit of not paying for my music. ;)

Having said that rapidshare, etc. is a great way of sharing compilations (thanks Carp) especially if the tracks are quite rare. Maybe if should just be parts of albums.

Then again someone said the other day the only way in the future to make music will be to tour. The actual music will make little money due to copying.

I'll try and put a few comps together of weird stuff. :)

I was thinking the exact same for this thread.

It's probably far better (in many respects) if no full albums are posted publicly but compilations with only single tracks by artists seem ok. These might spark interest in somebody and no sales have, as such, been lost. Most people would never chance buying a pile of single tracks from itunes or wherever if they've never heard of the artist.

This the sort of thinking you were having?

Dunno. I bought two Dope Stars Inc. albums on the strength of the only song I'd heard by them.

It paid off though, both albums are awesome, but it could have gone so wrong.

Ok. Here's the first one. Future Anthems - Front242 1981-2003 (http://www.theversatilepig.com/FutureAnthems.zip)

Just one band but...yeah. :D They're one of those bands that I never get sick of. I wouldn't say they were revolutionary, rather an evolution of their predecessors such as Cabaret Voltaire, et al. They grew into their own sound quickly. Except for "Soul Manager," the tracks are pretty much chronological, so you get a really good idea of their changing sound and the improvements in studio equipment. All but "Deceit" (from "No Comment") are the original WaxTrax "pressings," so the sound quality varies. "Deceit" is from the re-issued, re-mastered catalog EMI (see below) released in the early 90s so there's a jump in sound quality for just that track. In addition, you'll hear a distinct improvement in sound and a lot more production between "Circling Overland," from 1988's "Front by Front" and "Rhythm of Time," from 1990's "Tyranny for You." They were building into a bigger sound every album but they took a gigantic leap in 1990 when they were signed to a big label, EMI IIRC. I'd imagine they got all sorts of new toys to play with. They produced three amazing albums under EMI from 1990 to 1992-93ish (can't quite remember the dates) and then didn't do anything as Front242 until 2003 with "Pulse," which isn't that exciting but there's one track I like a lot - "One."

1 - U Men
2 - Operating Tracks
3 - Special Forces
4 - Don't Crash
5 - W.Y.H.I.W.Y.G.
6 - Rerun Time
7 - Television Station

Well, I do have headhunter, just not on CD :(. Maybe I should just rebuy the damn thing .

I think record companies should have some sort of discount plan wherein you trade an old album on tape for one on CD for a price of like $5. It's not right that they make you rebuy stuff. Although I guess that's why P2P sites exist :D.

That's pretty neat that you have your own domain.

I need to clean and organize my room. This is a perfect excuse to pull out all the CDs from under the bed, from the boxes in my garage...

I need new bookcases. Too many books and CDs!

Sometimes you just need to try again later.

Daniel Johnston - More Songs of Pain. (http://www.mediafire.com/?3jylny0zmny)

This is his really wonderful early, very lo-fi stuff.
I have *checks* eight Daniel Johnston albums now, so will continue uploading as I listen to them.
Currently listening to "1990" which is a bit terrifying. He mentions the devil in every song. It goes just BEYOND obsession.
Songs of Pain, More Songs of Pain and Hi, How Are You are great though, I would highly recommend getting them.

Both .zip and mp3.

c) I say so.

Awesome awesome awesome. Espeically "Lloyd, I'm Ready to be Heartbroken."

MASSIVE SQUEE.

Last.FM "tags": alternative, female vocalists, indie, indie pop, indie rock, pop, scottish, twee.

Considering making twee compilation, not sure whether anyone would want it? I know I'd call it "ONE, TWO TWEE."

What's twee?

Kinda nice to the point of being almost painfully so - all "just so" and sweet, but taken to the extremes.

Wonderfully, "twee" mixed with "punk" is known as "cuddlecore" :D

That a good description, Miss Rubingtons ?

So.. we can make requests?! I request the tracks Alison and Will worked on for My Summer of Love. :D

I've been visiting this one thread on another board that has a lot of b-side/outtake type songs.. I believe I was looking for a Silversun Pickups song. Have a look-see! It's mostly punk and indie songs.
